Above the Trees

This writer / director has made a number of very good independent films, including Redwood Highway and Phoenix, Oregon. His latest offering is outstanding. The characters are very engaging, developed and sometimes quirky. Acting and plot are top-notch. Produced in southern Oregon, the director was able to draw on the talents of some of the Shakespearean actors in the area. Whether deliberate or not, I appreciated the social commentary with respect to our broken justice system. In particular, how so many people are pressured into plea bargains and are deprived of their right to jury trials... as a bonus, I appreciate that the director does not rely on gratuitous content to engage viewers. I hope this eventually finds its way to DVD and streaming platforms so it can reach a broader audience.
