When I stumbled upon the 2024 movie "Deaner '89", by random chance here in 2024, I opted to watch it, since it was a movie that I hadn't already seen, nor actually heard about. And being a metalhead myself, then of course the storyline of the movie just had all the more appeal to lure me in.
And I will say that I was definitely entertained by the script and storyline that writer Paul Spence had come up with. It was a simple, yet straightforward, storyline that sort of had a make-you-feel-good vibe to it. And I couldn't help but have a chuckle along the way, especially because the Dean character was so over-the-top.
The only familiar faces on the screen for me was Stephen McHattie, Will Sasso, Kevin McDonald and Lauren Cochrane. The acting performances in the movie were good. And writer Paul Spence had come up with some good characters and dialogue.
"Deaner '89" is definitely a movie that I would recommend you to sit down and watch, especially if you enjoy the late 1980s era and have a fondness for metal. So sit down and raise the horns for Dean.
My rating of director Sam McGlynn's 2024 movie "Deaner '89" lands on a six out of ten stars.

I've liked most of the spin offs from the Fubar franchise and this one is quite fun as well. Some good humor, Canadian stereotypes as always. Cool to see some funny Canadians names like Will Sasso & Kevin McDonald. I think this proved that Paul Spence can keep his character in this franchise going on his own but I would still like to see him and Terry back together with the Trailer Park Boys/Swearnet. Good little origin story.

Wow. Just wow. Is this an 'action comedy' about the Sixties Scoop?
As the logline suggests, there is no singular coherent story. Like, at all. Receiving a trunk of his dead biological father's belongings is not enough of an inciting incident, there is zero dramatic action or plotting that follows. The scenes lack internal structure and setups, payoffs or punch lines. The transitions are just frequent cuts to a fifty-year-old dude on a BMX pretending to be seventeen again. Instead of learning about his hitherto hidden indigenous Metis identity, he's discovering heavy metal, but the score lacks any actual heavy metal. It's 1989, so if you're a Dokken fan, you'll know that year things fell apart and they broke up. There's a cartoonish bad biker attempted antagonistic subplot that's so cringe it's funny in a 'The Room' kind of way. It's trying to pass off as part of a franchise with a fan base but not delivering any goods. Some performances are good despite the lack of material. Star Slade almost saves the scenes she's in. Spence, however, can only barely channel the character and has changed things about Dean like his social class, hometown, ethnicity, the mom he had in the Fubar films and his age while trying hard to prove he's the Deaner. How much can you stand to watch Paul Spence constantly shotgun beers and say 'Giver?" Feels like he's trying to prove he's the better of two bangers but fell flat on his 'Sexcalibur' knife. As a Fubar fan, I feel ripped off. This film looks like it had at least ten million to work with, so hardly the little Indy Canadian that could. Meanwhile, Indigenous filmmakers in Canada continue to get robbed at fund points.

For starters i watched this movie in the theatre close to where i live with my dad and there were some drunk girls there and one of them was making out with the cut out of the Deaner ... my dad enjoyed the money which i was surprised cause he's old. I purchased it on Prime and rewatched it acouple of times now they just dont make very good movies anymore and this one is just very original yah know? It gives you a very nostalgic Canadian vibe. , all the actors in the movie were very good , it had a intresting story and felt like an adventure i kinda wished the movie had of been longer like the titanic. Deaner could play a much handsomer Leonardo.

I had the incredible opportunity to be a background actor in Deaner '89, and the entire experience was unforgettable. From being on set to seeing the final product on release day, it was surreal to watch the movie come to life, especially after seeing so much of what went on behind the scenes.
I even got to meet Paul Spence, who couldn't have been nicer. In one scene, he had to push past me, and he took the time to check in and make sure I knew what was happening. As a freshly 18-year-old working on my very first project, it meant the world to me. It was such a small moment, but it showed how professional and kind he was.
Maybe I'm a little biased from being part of the filming process, but I genuinely enjoyed the movie. It has that raw, nostalgic energy with just the right mix of humor and heart. Whether you're a fan of FUBAR or just looking for something different, Deaner '89 is a ride worth taking.

As a Métis person this movie inspired me to appreciate more my roots, as a metal head this movie inspired me to appreciate more my rooooots (blooooody roooooots) haha I know sepultura isn't the type of metal we're talking about here but it fits🤘🏼
But in all seriousness, this is an incredible movie and even though it outside the FUBAR world now it still has the spirit of the original movies with Deaners character.
This movie will be watched along side the originals by all of the old school fubar fans guaranteed as if it were a sequel to the originals, INSTANT CANADIAN CLASSIC 100%
Rent or buy this movie is worth every single penny.

Anyone who gives this movie less than an 8/10 wasn't paying attention. As a Canadian who grew up in dead end towns I'm admittedly biased but I can authentically speak to the expertly curated set design and wardrobe choices in this film and they nailed it. Anyone else who has spent time in small town Canada will know Dean Murdochs' (Paul Spence) neighbourhood intimately (including the front yard junk piles and local sidewalk six-pack guy).
Going into Deaner '89 I was expecting to laugh at some dumb slapstick jokes and the beloved characters' riotous charm but I was surprised to be genuinely moved by the story. Without spoilers, this is a journey of self discovery and an example of what it takes to chase the dream when no one else wants you to. If you've ever felt trapped inside a box that the world demands you to be happy in, you'll resonate with Deans' experience. This Canadian indie film confronts some important, heavy themes with grace and tact.
The family dynamic of father figure Glen (Will Sasso), anxiously religious mother Mirna (Lauren Cochrane) and headstrong little sister Jen (Star Slade) is sweet and entertaining. Kitty (Mady Foley) is the perfect high school heartthrob and her Aunt May (Mary Walsh) is the metal mentor of my dreams. This movie truly has a lot to offer and the grade A (Eh) comedic performances and heavy metal spirit make up the juicy cherry on top of Deaner '89.

What a great 80's style movie. This is exactly how good movies were made in the 80's and 90's. It's got such a feel good vibe and also is funny as hell. I will be watching this over and over for many years. If you're a fan of the original Fubar movie or 80's style films then this movie is for you. It's got lots of great Canadian humor and also that 80's rock n roll vibe. The casting is also pretty spot on and all the actors and actresses do a great job. It's been awhile since we've had a great Canadian made film that will become an instant classic and will bring new fans into the Fubar world. Turn up the good and turn down the sick!!! WHOO!! GIVER!!

Deaner89 is not just a backstory for the governor of givin'r, it is a love letter to so many of the best things the late 80s gave us; all wrapped in a heartfelt story with deeply developed characters. Deaner89 stands on it's own as a story of growing up, finding your roots and grappling with who you thought you were and who you want to be. The cast is an unbelievable group of Canadian comedy Royalty (Sasso! Mary Walsh! Kevin MacDonald!) and newer stars (Star Slade!) who were each rich contributors to the story, not just recognizable names with cameos. Deaner89 delivered on the laughs I expected from the lovable metalhead we've come to know, but the movie is a 10/10 for me because it surprised and delighted at every turn from the deeply relatable teen angst moments for kids of anyy generation, to the incredible way the movie touched on some often much brushed over darker moments of Canada's past that continue to leave its legacy on countless families. Congratulations to Paul Spence, Sam McGlynn and the entire production team for giving us something nostalgic, meaningful and just plain fun. Go check it out while you can!
Deaner '89 is a very stupid movie, with a lot of really stupid 80s tropes done to perfection. And these lead to laugh out loud moments, but --- BUT ! - there is also some really sophisticated turns of phrase, scenes and shots that make the movie more than the sum of its parts.
I think if you have a family that's really cool about swearing this may be a perfect family film.
The heart of the film is Deaner exploring his hereto unknown his metis ancestry. It doesn't hit you over the head, but instead focused on the joy in finding community and how unfunny and stupid racism is. It makes it a perfect intro into some issues Canadian's don't really love talking about (coughsixtiesscoopcough), and could be a cool way to get someone thinking a little bit deeper, especially if they are the type that don't "get" land acknowledgements.
Oh also, it is very funny.

Loved the two Fubar movies and loved this!! Nice cameos by Kids in the Hall's Kevin McDonald who plays a shop teacher, MadTV's Will Sasso who plays his dad and hockey coach and This Hour Has 22 Minute's Mary Walsh who plays Deaner's girlfriends mom who was in a punk rock band. Yes this may not be an intellectual masterpiece but it made me smile and laugh which is what the world needs more of. I especially loved the inclusion of old school rock/metal bands like Dokken, Judas Priest, Metallica, etc. And Dean meeting a member of Dokken as he was denied entrance into the concert venue. Reminded me of when Wayne & Garth going backstage to meet Alice Cooper & Aerosmith. Hopefully they continue to make these rock comedies in the tradition of Spinal Tap. Cheers and rock on deadly dudes!!

I loved this movie but you can't go into it with an expectation that it will be like the Fubar movies. You also have to get over the fact that Deaner is an old guy trying to play a teenager. PS I have no idea how the hell he pulled off being so spry at his age... I am 40 and can barely get off the couch without hurting myself.
Anyway, my review has to be a certain length and I don't have much else to say about the movie other than...
Woman is a Danger Cat
The streets are silent, My wheels are the night, Black leather boots calling out to you, A cute blonde boogie machine spreads her wings, And comes along for the ride.
Your father thinks you're out at Suzie's place, Bonin' up on the classics, But everyone in high school knows, You're heavy into gymnastics.
One way street, never mind the signs, Full charged gasoline in the tank, Your foot is on the gas and the tires say YEAH!
Woman is a danger cat
Your teachers say you never try, You should be top of the class, But if I was your only educator, You know that you would pass.
You sneak out at night, Deep into the night, This ain't no halfway house, You came from good blood RIGHT!
On and on
Woman is a danger cat
-Deaner.

Well, that was the best movie I've seen in a long time. I laughed my ass off. The characters were well developed. The humour was intelligent and relatable. I loved the sister and brother relationship. I had never seen the previous fubar movie before but i had an open mind when watching this film. It was so funny and laughed out loud a bunch of times. The music is soooo good. I think this is my new favorite movie and im going to say this is a Canadian Masterpiece. I really hope they make a sequel to this where Deaner lives in Calgary and starts a band or something. If you have time go do yourself a favour and watch this flick.

10/10;) deadly movie that's all about givner. Writing this review cuz deaner deserves a 10/10 not no 5.5 like come on this is the deadliest movie of the decade. I saw d'89 with my buddies while drinking a couple brews and that's what dean nation is about man and if you ain't about that then what are you even doin? Although I think that this flick should have gone to dvd and not to streaming services to stick with the classic style we love fubar for (acknowledging that the two movies have no legal ties so to speak) still a wicked movie to pass down to the ever evolving headbangers. I've always wanted to see the backstory of the governor of giviner. Now go watch this deadly flick.

Movie Review: Deener 89
If you're looking for a film that delivers a nostalgic punch, jaw-dropping action, and an emotional rollercoaster, Deener 89 is it. I walked away absolutely blown away-it rocked in every sense of the word!
The story is tight, captivating, and filled with just the right amount of twists and turns to keep you hooked. The way it seamlessly blends retro vibes with a fresh, modern approach is genius. The cinematography is vibrant, with each shot feeling like a work of art that plunges you right into its electrifying world.
The cast shines. Each character feels alive and deeply human, with moments of humor, heartbreak, and triumph that make the entire experience unforgettable. Whether it's the razor-sharp dialogue or the incredible soundtrack (seriously, it's a banger), Deener 89 is the kind of movie that resonates long after the credits roll.
This isn't just a movie-it's an experience. If you haven't seen it yet, you're missing out. Trust me, Deener 89 is a cinematic masterpiece that truly rocks!

Went to see this wicked funny movie on opening night at Cineplex West Ed. This prequel to Fubar 1/2 is a hilarious story that teaches us where the "Governor of Giviner" came from and how he ended up landing in Calgary .... Finding his roots in a mystery box of relics from his birth father was introduced to us in the funniest way possible..
We know the Deaner from the Fibar movies but we never knew that he had a 1/2 sister or was adopted into a Manitoba home and finding out his story was more than we thought was a real twist!!
I would definitely recommend this movie to everyone - even those who have not seen the Fubar movies .... 10 / 10.

If you grew up listening to metal in the 80's this movie will feel like a blast from the past. Everything looks authentic for the time period. This entry feels different than FUBAR 1 and 2 but stays true to the cult classic Canadian humor it's known for. This is a prequel, an origin story for one of the greatest Canadian comedy characters of all time. The cast is a lineup of comedy legends. Will Sasso plays a very realistic 80's Dad, and it is hilarious! The soundtrack is filled to the brim with great 80's metal and rock. If your a Dokken fan your in for an absolute treat. All in all this is a great film and worth your time and money! So what are you waiting for? Go Give'r a watch!

This movie gives 'er from like front to back, or back to front, depending which way yer standing. Soooo, you really should go see 'er, man. It's the Deaner, doing what he does best...just givin' er. Not much else to say, except check yer nuts often fer lumps cuz you might have ball cancer. You can even get yer only lady to check yer nuts for ya, and you could check her rack too...ya know, like...Quid Pro Quo. I learned that word in that movie with the cannibal guy. No cannibals in this movie though. Just lots of givin' er. Lots of beers. Lots of tunes. And it's like Canadian to the bone, ya know?

Feel proud to be Canadian again. Deaner delivers the goods on this one bud. A Canadian cult classic bringing some of the deadliest one liners mixed with loud music and hot ch*cks ! This movie has Kevin McDonald and as a teen I loved kids in the hall so that's awesome. William Sasso as he's known by us undersides was a deadly addition. This movie belongs beside all the other forms of Canadian culture like littlest hobo and of course fubar. Deaner 89 is everything you'd expect it to be. Funny, poignant(that's french for deadly) and reminds of climbing the rope in gym class . Anyways us Canucks stick together and deaner rocks!
