In the second episode of “Khakee: The Bengal Chapter” (2025), a pivotal scene between the General Secretary of the Ruling Party and resident puppet master, Borun Roy (Prosenjit Chatterjee), and the newly inducted head of the Special Investigative Task Force, Arjun Maitra (Jeet), sees Roy explaining the system as a symphony, with each section contributing to the evocation or efficient running of said symphony/system.
I suppose that could be the baseline driving the creative direction of Neeraj Pandey as he shepherds a spin-off/second season of his popular 2022 series—”Khakee: The Bihar Chapter.” Like its progenitor, this “chapter” is also researched and based on true events, but it constructs an original story around those events. Writers Debatma Mandal and Samrat Chakraborty, along with Pandey, set the story majorly in 2002, with key moments flashed back to 1991 and one specific origin story to 1988.

Netflix India unveiled the anticipated trailer for “Khakee: The Bengal Chapter” at a star-studded event in Kolkata on Wednesday, ahead of its March 20 premiere.
Produced by Friday Storytellers and created by industry veteran Neeraj Pandey, the crime drama is co-directed by Debatma Mandal and Tushar Kanti Ray. Following the success of “Khakee: The Bihar Chapter,” which unraveled the murky nexus of power, politics, and police in India’s hinterlands, Netflix is set to explore new stories under the same banner.
The new series, set against the backdrop of early 2000s West Bengal, centers on Indian Police Service (Ips) cop Arjun Maitra, a principled officer who emerges as a catalyst for change during a period when gangsters and politicians wielded unchallenged authority. His determination to forge a path toward justice within a treacherous landscape of political machinations and gang warfare forms the narrative backbone of the show.

Back in the day, crime dramas usually used to have corrupt cops. And even if the protagonist was a member of any law enforcement authority, they used to punch up instead of down. In case you’ve forgotten due to the Singham franchise’s recent trashy entries, the first one was actually about catching a corrupt politician, not doing the bidding of one. While movies like Ugly, Raman Raghav 2.0, Paan Singh Tomar, and Sonchiriya tried to show the real face of the law, films like Talaash, Mardaani (and its sequel), Raees, Dabangg (the entire trilogy), Murder Mubarak, Rautu ka Raaz, Khakee: The Bihar Chapter, Delhi Crime, and even the highly revered Article 15 kept portraying the police as the bastion of justice and righteousness. That said, slowly but steadily, directors and writers are starting to realize again that maybe celebrating the khaki uniform isn’t a good idea because it has some real-life consequences.

One of the last reels of the series shows the protagonist passing through a dark tunnel into the light, metaphorically telling that there is light at the end of tunnel in terms of possibilities of curbing and dealing with the black money mafia. Kaala seems to be derived from the term ‘Kaala Paisa’ or ‘Black Money’. Earlier filmmakers dealt with the counterfeit notes mafia in ‘Farzi’, this time around Bejoy Nambiar’s ‘Kaala’ deals with ‘Hawala’ dealings. From the director who made thrillers like Shaitan, David & Wazir, Kaala adds to his exceptional storytelling repertoire and introduces us to the term ‘Reverse Hawala’ – converting white money into black and pumping huge stash of cash for illicit activities including terrorism.
Kaala is set against the backdrop of chaotic Kolkata, a riveting tale of love, loss, betrayal and irony. With young and ambitious Ib officer Ritwik Mukherjee (Avinash Tiwary) life seems like a series of random events,...

Neeraj Pandey’s The Freelancer, the brand-new action thriller web series, takes us through a war-torn Syria, which has become one of the most hostile regions of the world. The premise for the thriller series has been adapted from Shirish Thorat’s popular book, A Ticket to Syria. The biggest giveaway here is the nature of the genre. On the surface, The Freelancer is a rescue mission, but at its core, it takes us through the lawlessness of a particular region of the country and the rampant radicalization happening in the name of religion. The tense visuals, coupled with hardcore action sequences, add to the grittiness of the narrative presented in the trailer.
Story and Plot
The trailer for The Freelancer gave us enough of a peek into the world that Neeraj Pandey has created. The abduction of a young girl named Aliya Khan, daughter of intelligence officer Inayat Khan,...

Khakee: The Bihar Chapter(Netflix, 8 Episodes)
Although plunging into the percolating plunderland of Bihar, Khakee: The Bihar Chapter hardly has any Bihari actors in the lead except Abhimanyu Singh who plays a honest frustrated cop whose attempts to arrest a notorious lower-caste criminal Chandan Mahto is forever foiled by powerful politicians. The more he tries, the more we feel his pain. If watching the criminal slip out of the hands of law is so painful, imagine what an insider in this fugitive’s freedom must feel like.
Chandan Mahto, as played by Avinash Tiwari, is a notorious social climbers. Starting off as small-time goon, he is don Ravi Kishan’s righthand man soon. As his socially upward climb on ladder crime , continues, we are introduced to other anti-socials who shoot on command without a hint of remorse.
Khakee succeeds in bringing out the menace and danger that rural Bihar encountered in the 1990s.

Film director, producer, and screenwriter Neeraj Pandey opens up about his upcoming series ‘Khakee: The Bihar Chapter’ and why he opted for the particular story from Bihar which revolves around the 2004 clash between Ips officer Amit Lodha and a local mafia, Chandan.
He said: “When I met Amit for the first time, I found it incredible that there was an IITian who wanted to appear for the Upsc, cracked it, and then chose Ips. He was originally from Rajasthan but was given Bihar cadre. He landed in Patna and was a fish out of water. His entire journey, which started in Patna, and his face-off with this criminal is the core of the story.”

Netflix is poised to unveil several of its series and two of its movies at the International Film Festival of India. The festival gets underway on Sunday and runs to Nov. 28.
Streaming platforms and film festivals can have uneasy relationships – due to its relationship with French cinemas, Cannes refuses to program Netflix films in premiere slots, and in India streamers were accused of taking advantage of pandemic conditions to license movies that could not access theaters – but increasingly they are finding common ground. Iffi will hold panel discussions after screening some of the Netflix content.

Actor Avinash Tiwary, who plays a baddie in the upcoming streaming series, ‘Khakee: The Bihar Chapter’, feels there’s far more thrill and creative satisfaction in essaying characters with grey shades. He shared that he naturally gravitates towards characters which are not ‘good’, or are unconventional.
Elaboration on the same, Avinash says: “There is a lot more colour in playing grey shades on screen. I have always found myself gravitating towards characters that aren’t all pure or holy. I find a different energy in chasing the layers of characters.”
The author backed role was offered to Tiwary even though he has not played a negative role before. While the director was confident about casting the actor against the grain, the actor took it upon himself to breathe fire into this role and plunge neck-deep into a territory that he hasn’t inhabited before, without any reservations.
He further mentions:...
