Solo Leveling: What to Know, Where to Start, and Where to Watch
Image
The Winter 2024 anime season brought fun new series like Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! and another season of Mashle: Magic and Muscles. However, there was another anime series that fans couldn't wait to watch, a much-anticipated fantasy anime that was released between January 7 and March 31, 2024. The Solo Levelinganime adaptation was well-received for its first season, although Season 2 has earned much more critical acclaim.

Given the robust, enthusiastic fandom surrounding the Solo Leveling web novels and webcomics, this is no ordinary fantasy romp. Even if Solo Leveling may seem like a formulaic fantasy adventure to newcomers, anime fans are encouraged to give it a try, see what it's really all about, and dive into the entire franchise headfirst to see what all the fuss is really about. Season 2 is currently ongoing and expected to conclude in March if it follows the same timetable as its predecessor.

Two New Romance Anime's Takes on Valentine's Day Show The Genre Is Still Fresh
Image
A Condition Called Love breaks tradition with a shared Valentine's Day baking experience, leading to a heartfelt confession and character growth. Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! focuses on friendship in its Valentine's Day episode, subverting romantic cliches for a refreshing change. These fresh perspectives in romance anime episodes prove that the genre is evolving, showcasing new takes on traditional Valentine's Day themes.

Two romance series from Crunchyroll's current and previous seasons, A Condition Called Love and Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!, respectively, unsurprisingly devote an entire episode to Valentine's Day, as the majority of anime in the genre almost always do. However, each of them explores the international holiday from two very different, but more importantly, very fresh perspectives. This comes amid persistent, highly unsupported claims that the genre is stagnant, helping to prove that romance anime is fresher than ever before, even though it always has been.

Crunchyroll’s New Romance Anime Gives A Twist to Western Flicks in Season Finale
Image
Warning: The following contains spoilers for Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! episode 12!

Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! adds an original twist to the classic airport chase scene trope. The anime playfully combines Western movie clichés with anime tropes for a unique outcome. The series consistently introduces conflicts but minimizes the impact, keeping the lead characters unscathed whil their romance developed.

The season 1 finale of Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! on Crunchyroll gave a surprsingly fun, unexpected twist to a major scene from western rom-coms, rather than attempting to subvert any traditional anime tropes. The twist does, however, serve as the latest example of a major pattern that the series began establishing early on, which has been playfully messing with fans almost every time some form of conflict reared its ugly head.

It's almost impossible for fans familiar with Western movies and shows to not come to the conclusion that mangaka...

Crunchyroll's New Romance Gets Unexpectedly Brutal
Image
Warning: The following contains spoilers for Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! episode 7!!

Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! exchanged its formula for drama with a brutal and unexpected storyline. The main couple, Shiki and Fuyuki, face potential heartbreak when Shiki is spotted on a date with another girl – betraying not just the female lead, but the precendents originally set by the anime. Fans of the new romance series are left reeling as the series accelerates conflict and begins to deviate from its lighthearted tone.

Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! on Crunchyroll just went in a completely brutal direction that feels unexpected due to the precedent set so far in the series, and the way that the story has progressed so far. Although viewers were preparing themselves for drama after the series hinted that it was become a classic harem romance, subsequent episodes provided some reprieve when they appeared to nullify any...

New Crunchyroll Romance Anime Defies Valentine's Trope to Focus on the Genre's Overlooked Strength
Image
Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! subverts the typical Valentine's Day episode in romance anime by focusing on friendship instead of romantic relationships. The episode initially hints at a potential love triangle, but instead addresses the rising tension with heartwarming displays of friendship. The anime highlights the power of friendship and how it can overcome romantic troubles, making it more than just a typical romance series.

Warning: Spoilers for Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! episode #5Crunchyroll's Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! completely subverted the ubiquitous Valentine's Day episode in romance anime, and its result highlights one of the genre's best qualities whenever a series focuses on the subject – friendship. Any anime rom-com that explores Valentine's Day almost always has the love interests eventually get the other a special chocolate after spending the entire episode worrying about how it will be taken and if they will receive one in return.
