For data nerds – it’s our favorite time of the year – the second half of 2024 viewing data has just been released! We’ve got a lot more to come, but what are the most-watched movies and series of the second half of the year? Let’s dive straight in.

What are the key points that Netflix has cited as being the most important for this data drop? Netflix reiterated that Engagement (time spent watching) is the best metric to gauge member satisfaction and that this data drop covers ~99% of all video watch time on Netflix and that no single title accounts for more than 1% of total Netflix viewing.

Squid Game S2 had the most hours viewed (0.7% of total viewing), and their total watch time for this period of July to December 2024 was 94B hours (5% increase YoY). Their most-viewed series was Squid Game S2 (87M views) despite premiering only 6 days before year-end.

Netflix subscribers streamed more content than ever in the back half of 2024 — and the second season of Korean hit drama “Squid Game” was the biggest TV show on the service.

The streamer’s customers watched more than 94 billion hours on Netflix in the second half of last year, a 5% increase year over year, according to its latest Engagement Report sharing data on what people watched on from July-December 2024.

“The Patrick Star Show” has been renewed for Season 4 and Season 5 at Nickelodeon.

The announcement was made as part of the “SpongeBob SquarePants” 25th anniversary panel at New York Comic-Con on Friday. Both of the new seasons will consist of 13 episodes. Season 3 of the animated series debuted in July 2024.

“The Patrick Star Show” serves as a spinoff to “SpongeBob,” and follows “Patrick and the rest of his family as they are constantly disrupted by his wild whims and surreal imagination.” Bill Fagerbakke voices Patrick as he does in the mothership series. Additional voice cast members include Tom Wilson, Cree Summer, Jill Talley, Dana Snyder, and Dee Bradley Baker. Nickelodeon dropped a first-look clip of its upcoming SpongeBob Squarepants‘ 25th anniversary stop-motion special SpongeBob & Sandy’s Country Christmas set for premiere in December on Nick and Paramount+. The clip was revealed Friday during Nick’s panel at New York Comic Con.

In the half-hour special, when one of Sandy’s experiments goes awry, the Cheeks family team up to save Christmas in Bikini Bottom.

“Dune: Part Two,” “Inside Out 2” and “The Creator” lead the feature nominations for this year’s Hollywood Professional Association (Hpa) Awards with three apiece. The awards will be presented during a Nov. 7 gala at the Television Academy in North Hollywood.

“Dune: Part Two” was nominated in the categories for color grading, editing and sound; “The Creator,” for color grading, sound and visual effects; and “Inside Out 2” for color grading in an animation feature, sound, and VFX in an animated feature. The eligibility period runs from September to September.

As previously announced, during the ceremony FotoKem will receive the Charles S. Swartz Award for industry contributions. Adobe, Disguise, Cuebric and Evercast will be honored for engineering excellence.

In its second week on Netflix, Prison Break rocketed to the top of Nielsen’s streaming rankings.

The former Fox series, which also streams on Hulu, was added to Netflix on July 29 and made its streaming chart debut that week. For the week of Aug. 5-11, it more than doubled the previous frame’s viewing time, rising from 758 million to 1.6 billion minutes. (Hulu, incidentally, is developing a new version of Prison Break with Mayans Mc showrunner Elgin James.)

Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy — whose final season premiered Aug. 8 — was the top original series for the week, coming in at 1.46 billion minutes of viewing. That’s a strong showing, but also down a good amount from the 2.45 billion minutes the show recorded the week of its season three premiere in June 2022.

Audiences across the United States are finally discovering Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, starring Tom Cruise. The action movie, a sequel to 2012's Jack Reacher, has managed to find itself atop Nielsen's recent streaming ratings charts.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back was the top streaming movie between July 29 and Aug. 4, 2024, with 697 million minutes streamed, according to Nielsen. The 2016 movie came in ahead of several new releases, such as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (560M), Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (476M), Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie (414M), and Tarot (291M). Never Go Back also landed at #10 on Nielsen's overall chart, which includes both movies and television series. It is worth noting that Nielsens streaming ratings cover viewing only on TV sets in the United States and do not include minutes watched on computers or mobile devices.

No original series or movie made the overall top 10 titles in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week of July 29-Aug. 4. That’s a first in the four-year history of the weekly rankings, according to the ratings service. Streaming levels outside of the Olympics “decreased significantly” during the week, Nielsen says.

House of the Dragon, however, continued its strong showing on Max (since the show also airs on HBO, Nielsen considers it an acquired series rather than an original). The Game of Thrones prequel topped the week leading up to its second season finale with 1.31 billion minutes of viewing, up from 1.04 billion a week earlier and its best mark of the season so far.

The debut of “Emily in Paris” Season 4 proves Netflix audiences are far from done with the chaotic comedy.

The Lily Collins-led series’ latest installment debuted to an impressive 19.9 million views following the Aug. 15 premiere of the season’s first five episodes that comprise Part 1. The remaining five episodes of Season 4 are set to premiere on Sept. 12.

For reference, “Bridgerton” Season 3, Part 1 debuted to 45.1 million views in May, with the premiere of Part 2 in June boosting the season’s views to 28 million. And while Emmy-nominated “Baby Reindeer” did not make a splash until its second week on the streamer with 13.3 million views, viewership for the limited series peaked in its third week, drawing in 22 million views.

For the sixth straight Monday, a new and different film is #1 on VOD at both iTunes and Fandango. “Twisters” (Universal), which grossed almost $10 million in theaters last weekend, is the latest summer hit to reach home viewing.

Also like last week, “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder,” led by “Wednesday” star Emma Myers, was the biggest TV title of the week with 8.4 million views reached in its first full week of availability, an improvement on the previous week’s 7.4 million views in four days.

At No. 2 on the TV chart was the debut of “The Umbrella Academy” Season 4, which hit 8.4 million views in its first four days on Netflix. It was followed by docuseries “Simone Biles Rising,” which hit 3.7 million views in its fourth week on the chart, buoyed by Biles’ performance at the 2024 Olympics.

The Spongebob spinoff movie managed 13.4M views, making it the most-watched title of the week, while A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder churned out 8.4M views — up a million from the week prior and good enough for No. 1 in TV.

The film in second place was Ferdinand with 7.3M views.
