Remember Baz Luhrmann’s early 2000 film about romance and music in Paris? Yes, we are referring to the 2001 release of the jukebox musical Moulin Rouge!, which film critic Roger Ebert once likened to “being trapped on an elevator with the circus”.

In the 2001 flick, we saw English writer Christian (Ewan McGregor) pen his love story on his typewriter as he mourned the loss of his beloved Satine (Nicole Kidman). You may not be aware, though, that multiple actors tried out for the role of Christian but were not selected. Among them were Leonardo DiCaprio, Heath Ledger, and Jake Gyllenhaal; Ethan Hawke was also considered for the part.

During a recent interview with Howard Stern, the Prisoners actor disclosed that he and Ledger were both “disappointed” about losing the role.

Professional dancer Robin Windsor, who appeared on the British reality competition show Strictly Come Dancing, has tragically died at the young age of 44.

He had most recently been starring in Come What May, a Moulin Rouge tribute show.

Come What May‘s production company announced the tragic news, writing, “it is with heavy hearts that we announce the tragic passing of our beloved friend, Robin Windsor.”

Professional dancer Robin Windsor, best known to TV audiences for his four-season stint on the UK’s Strictly Come Dancing, has died at the age of 44. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

Living Colour frontman Corey Glover has formed a new band, Sonic Universe, who have shared their debut single “I Am” from their forthcoming album, It Is What It Is, out May 10th.

The group sees Glover in collaboration with guitarist/producer Mike Orlando (Adrenaline Mob), bassist Booker King, and drummer Taykwuan Jackson.

Glover’s longtime band Living Colour — which remains active — is a good frame of reference for Sonic Universe. On “I Am,” the band lays down a very Living Colour-esque brand of funk metal while Glover’s commanding voice soars in full flight. Doubling as the album opener, the upbeat jam is a fitting way to launch a new chapter in the singer’s career.

Running 10 tracks in length, It Is What It Is was produced, engineered, and mixed by Orlando at Sonic Stomp Studios. Pre-orders are available via earMUSIC.

The Moulin Rouge! soundtrack offers a wide variety of needle drops spanning multiple genres. The sheer variety of songs on the album is understood given that almost every Baz Luhrmann movie brims with a lively musical energy. Themes of parental guilt and the effects of broken families on children are hinted at early but discarded in favor of genre pleasures, which Carion provides to increasingly formulaic effect.

We've long been awaiting Baz Luhrman's masterpiece Moulin Rouge! to fulfill the seemingly ancient prophecy to make its way onto the stage. Well, that day has finally arrived as the musical's pre-Broadway tryout begins tonight at Boston's Emerson Colonial Theatre.

We have already been teased by Aaron Tveit singing the epic love song "Come What May" in a foggy theatre, but now we have the real goods we've been dying to see: Karen Olivo stepping into the large shoes of Nicole Kidman as the sparkling diamond Satine and a theatre completely transformed to Luhrman excess. While Olivo's costume (designed by this year's My Fair Lady Tony winner Catherine Zuber) might be somewhat understated from what we might have been hoping to see, we're confident there is further opulence coming once we see what the rest of the show has in store. As for the set, hold on to your hats.

Chris here. Plenty of folks may be ho-hum about this year's Tony nominations and the past season in general, but the good news is that we have major Broadway events just ahead - namely the long awaited stage adaptation of Baz Luhrman's masterpiece Moulin Rouge!

Lucky folks in Boston will get to see its pre-Broadway tryout next month, but theatre lovers elsewhere just got the first sampling of what awaits us on stage.

An opulent music video of star Aaron Tveit singing the musical's signature ballad "Come What May" has arrived. While I'm not a much of a fan of Tveit's voice (sorry!), the video does quite a bit to assuage any doubts that the stage would be cheapening Luhrman's decadence and luxouriousness. Guys, the smoke and paper/rose set dressing and plushy simplicity is simply gorgeous!

Rehearsals got underway Thursday for Moulin Rouge! The Musical, the stage adaptation of the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film set in the Montmartre Quarter of belle epoque Paris, which will play a pre-Broadway engagement at the Emerson Colonial Theatre in Boston this summer.

To mark the occasion, the production has released a video of Aaron Tveit, who plays lovesick writer Christian, performing "Come What May," one of the best-known songs from the razzle-dazzle movie that starred Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. The video was directed by Ezra Hurwitz and was shot in the historic Kings Theatre in Brooklyn.

Aaron Tveit, a Broadway veteran perhaps best known for playing Danny Zuko in Fox’s “Grease: Live,” next tackles another iconic musical role: Ewan McGregor’s lovesick writer Christian in a Broadway-bound stage adaptation of “Moulin Rouge!”

And come what may, it looks like he’s nailing it.

The actor belts out the 2001 Baz Luhrmann movie’s ballad “Come What May” in a new music video released Thursday in advance of the stage adaptations’s premiere next month at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre.

The stage version, expected to transfer to New York sometime next season, also stars Tony winner Karen Olivo (“In the Heights”), Danny Burstein (“Fiddler on the Roof”), Sahr Naugjah (“Fela”), Ricky Rojas (“Burn the Floor”) and Robyn Hurder (“Nice Work if You Can Get It”).

Directed by Alex Timbers with a book by Tony winner John Logan (“Red”), the show will be choreographed by Sonya Tayeh. The Boston run is booked for a limited engagement, from June 27 through Aug. 5.

But it’s unlikely how much flying paper, roses, snow and fog will remain in the stage production.

The stage musical will include many of the film’s songs, as well as more recent hits. The 2001 movie premiered at Cannes in 2001 before going on to become a big-screen hit.

The film earned eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won two, for art direction and costume design.
