“Both Heath and I were disappointed”: Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger Were Devastated After Losing The Lead Role in a 2X Oscar Winning Movie
Image
Remember Baz Luhrmann’s early 2000 film about romance and music in Paris? Yes, we are referring to the 2001 release of the jukebox musical Moulin Rouge!, which film critic Roger Ebert once likened to “being trapped on an elevator with the circus”.

In the 2001 flick, we saw English writer Christian (Ewan McGregor) pen his love story on his typewriter as he mourned the loss of his beloved Satine (Nicole Kidman). You may not be aware, though, that multiple actors tried out for the role of Christian but were not selected. Among them were Leonardo DiCaprio, Heath Ledger, and Jake Gyllenhaal; Ethan Hawke was also considered for the part.

During a recent interview with Howard Stern, the Prisoners actor disclosed that he and Ledger were both “disappointed” about losing the role.

Living Colour’s Corey Glover Launches New Band Sonic Universe, Unleashes Single “I Am”: Stream
Image
Living Colour frontman Corey Glover has formed a new band, Sonic Universe, who have shared their debut single “I Am” from their forthcoming album, It Is What It Is, out May 10th.

The group sees Glover in collaboration with guitarist/producer Mike Orlando (Adrenaline Mob), bassist Booker King, and drummer Taykwuan Jackson.

Glover’s longtime band Living Colour — which remains active — is a good frame of reference for Sonic Universe. On “I Am,” the band lays down a very Living Colour-esque brand of funk metal while Glover’s commanding voice soars in full flight. Doubling as the album opener, the upbeat jam is a fitting way to launch a new chapter in the singer’s career.

Running 10 tracks in length, It Is What It Is was produced, engineered, and mixed by Orlando at Sonic Stomp Studios. Pre-orders are available via earMUSIC.

As mentioned, Glover still remains active with Living Colour...

‘Driving Madeleine’ Review: French Icons Line Renaud And Dany Boon Star In Touching And Life-Changing Road Trip Through Paris
Image
You might hear the title, Driving Madeleine (French title: Une Belle Course), and then read the logline about a driver taxiing a 92-year old woman around Paris and instantly think “Aha! It is a French Driving Miss Daisy!” Well, having absolutely nothing to do with that 1989 Best Picture Oscar winner that so memorably starred Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman, the two films do have something in common. They are both irresistibly cast with exceptional veteran stars who each grab the heart and never let go.

A selection of the 2022 Toronto Film Festival, this quintessential French film may surprise you with its sheer grit. Yes, it is a road trip where the gorgeously shot City of Lights is undeniably the third major star in it, but the story, from a screenplay by Cyril Gely and adaptation by director Christian Carion, goes places I never expected.

The set-up is simple. Charles (Dany Boon...

Moulin Rouge! Soundtrack: Every Song & Where It Plays
Image
The Moulin Rouge! soundtrack offers a wide variety of needle drops spanning multiple genres. The sheer variety of songs on the album is understood given that almost every Baz Luhrmann movie brims with a lively musical energy. Starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman, this jukebox musical revolves around the forbidden love affair between a poet and a cabaret dancer in Paris in 1899. The title alludes to the legendary theater, which sets the stage for song-and-dance numbers visualized on vibrant medleys. Meanwhile, the two central protagonists also get to indulge in their own romantic duets.

What’s notable about the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack is how it blends its period setting with modern songs. Even though Paris was in the nascent stages of industrialization in the year that the movie is set in, the characters perform both original compositions and covers of songs by Nirvana, David Bowie, Madonna, Fatboy Slim, U2, Nat King Cole,...

'Cocaine Bear' Proves Matthew Rhys Should Do More Comedy
Image
Between the ruthless Russian spy Phillip Jennings in The Americans, the weary titular detective in Perry Mason, and even the cynical journalist Lloyd Vogel in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, there’s no one better at playing brooding, dark characters than Matthew Rhys. The Welsh star that can seemingly mask his accent seamlessly has continued to appear in serious-minded films such as The Report, The Post, Burnt, and Come What May. Considering how grim Rhys’ performances usually are, some audiences may have been shocked to see him pop up for a wild comedic role in Cocaine Bear. It hopefully won’t be the last time Rhys does comedy, because he clearly has an aptitude for it.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical Star Aaron Tveit on Getting Baz Luhrmann's 'Blessing' for Broadway Show
Moulin Rouge! The Musical star Aaron Tveit describes his role in the Broadway adaptation of the iconic Baz Luhrmann film as nothing short of “spectacular.”

In 2001, Luhrmann’s Oscar-winning movie musical about the bohemian romance of two doomed lovers, played by Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, dazzled audiences. 18 years later, the famous red windmill is back and has found a new home on New York City’s Great White Way.

“It’s exciting,” Tveit — who takes on the lead role as Christian, the struggling musician who falls for the alluring Satine — tells People of moving the show’s original Boston...

Christian Carion
Film Review: ‘My Son’
Christian Carion
Director Christian Carion and his frequent star Guillaume Canet show off their very particular sets of skills in “My Son” (“Mon garçon”), a polished, if mechanical, vigilante thriller that attempts to combine the psychological deep dive of Denis Villeneuve’s “Prisoners” with the adrenaline shot of Pierre Morel’s “Taken.” Falling well short of those superior films, this limited-release offering — which did modest business when it opened in France back in 2017 — squanders a compelling performance by top-billed Canet, playing an absentee father searching for his kidnapped son in the mountains of southeast France. Themes of parental guilt and the effects of broken families on children are hinted at early but discarded in favor of genre pleasures, which Carion provides to increasingly formulaic effect.

“My Son” is Carion’s fifth feature and his first in a contemporary setting since his 2001 César-nominated debut, “The Girl from Paris.” Since then, he’s tackled World War I,...

Moulin Rouge!'s Stage Life Begins
by Chris Feil

We've long been awaiting Baz Luhrman's masterpiece Moulin Rouge! to fulfill the seemingly ancient prophecy to make its way onto the stage. Well, that day has finally arrived as the musical's pre-Broadway tryout begins tonight at Boston's Emerson Colonial Theatre.

We have already been teased by Aaron Tveit singing the epic love song "Come What May" in a foggy theatre, but now we have the real goods we've been dying to see: Karen Olivo stepping into the large shoes of Nicole Kidman as the sparkling diamond Satine and a theatre completely transformed to Luhrman excess. While Olivo's costume (designed by this year's My Fair Lady Tony winner Catherine Zuber) might be somewhat understated from what we might have been hoping to see, we're confident there is further opulence coming once we see what the rest of the show has in store. As for the set, hold on to your hats.

Tveit Sings A "Moulin" Tune!
Chris here. Plenty of folks may be ho-hum about this year's Tony nominations and the past season in general, but the good news is that we have major Broadway events just ahead - namely the long awaited stage adaptation of Baz Luhrman's masterpiece Moulin Rouge!

Lucky folks in Boston will get to see its pre-Broadway tryout next month, but theatre lovers elsewhere just got the first sampling of what awaits us on stage.

An opulent music video of star Aaron Tveit singing the musical's signature ballad "Come What May" has arrived. While I'm not a much of a fan of Tveit's voice (sorry!), the video does quite a bit to assuage any doubts that the stage would be cheapening Luhrman's decadence and luxouriousness. Guys, the smoke and paper/rose set dressing and plushy simplicity is simply gorgeous!

Now all that awaits is a glimpse of Karen Olivo filling the very...

Rehearsals got underway Thursday for Moulin Rouge! The Musical, the stage adaptation of the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film set in the Montmartre Quarter of belle epoque Paris, which will play a pre-Broadway engagement at the Emerson Colonial Theatre in Boston this summer.

‘Moulin Rouge!': Watch Aaron Tveit Channel Ewan McGregor in Broadway-Bound Musical (Video)
Aaron Tveit
Aaron Tveit, a Broadway veteran perhaps best known for playing Danny Zuko in Fox’s “Grease: Live,” next tackles another iconic musical role: Ewan McGregor’s lovesick writer Christian in a Broadway-bound stage adaptation of “Moulin Rouge!”

And come what may, it looks like he’s nailing it.

The actor belts out the 2001 Baz Luhrmann movie’s ballad “Come What May” in a new music video released Thursday in advance of the stage adaptations’s premiere next month at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre.

The stage version, expected to transfer to New York sometime next season, also stars Tony winner Karen Olivo (“In the Heights”), Danny Burstein (“Fiddler on the Roof”), Sahr Naugjah (“Fela”), Ricky Rojas (“Burn the Floor”) and Robyn Hurder (“Nice Work if You Can Get It”).

Directed by Alex Timbers with a book by Tony winner John Logan (“Red”), the show will be choreographed by Sonya Tayeh. The Boston run is booked for a limited engagement, from June 27 through Aug. 5.

But it’s unlikely how much flying paper, roses, snow and fog will remain in the stage production.

The stage musical will include many of the film’s songs, as well as more recent hits. The 2001 movie premiered at Cannes in 2001 before going on to become a big-screen hit.

The film earned eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won two, for art direction and costume design.
