I know little about ballet, and probably less about opera - so finding this wonderful DVD was a real surprise. I sought it out because I'd seen Wim Wenders film "Pina", about the dancer / choreographer Pina Bausch, and this work is choreographied by her. If I understand right Gluck's Orpheus is written simply as an opera, but Pina chose to write a ballet for performance with the music - and in my very un-expert opinion on the basis of this recording of the performance in Paris it works very well, and obviously the story of Orpheus is great. The film is very engaging from beginning to end, but the final section is stunning. Do try to get hold of this - it so deserves to be better known - I find it hard to believe that I'm the first to review it! Enjoy ....
