It's hard to believe that we're more than a decade removed from the last feature-length Muppet movie. In the spring of 2014, Disney released the final Muppets movie -- at least, the final one for now. "Muppets Most Wanted" was, like its 2011 predecessor "The Muppets," a fun, family-friendly homage to the Muppet movies of old. The 2011 film, starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams, was as much about the Muppets themselves as it was a reference-laden film riffing on the 1979 classic "The Muppet Movie." And just as "The Great Muppet Caper" sent Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and Miss Piggy to Europe for a rollicking heist movie, "Muppets Most Wanted" sent its gaggle of Muppet characters away from the United States for an adventure that ran them afoul of Interpol and the world's first and second greatest criminal masterminds.
Muppet movies are also nothing if they're not delightfully self-referential, breaking the fourth wall with ease.

One of the most popular Super Bowl Lix commercials featured The Muppets in an ad for Booking.com. Despite airing late in the fourth quarter when the game was already decided, the commercial had fans talking and the consensus was, the beloved franchise needs to return, and it needs to be done right.
As with many Super Bowl Lix commercials, the one featuring The Muppets debuted about nine to ten days before the big game. As of this writing, it has garnered 93 million views and there is an overall feeling of nostalgia attached to seeing Jim Henson's famous creations again, even if it's a 30-second commercial for a travel booking website.
One fan said it best on X, formerly Twitter (via ComicBook):
"The Muppets doing a Super Bowl ad and yet Still no news of a new Muppets film in the works [is where we have] gone wrong as a nation."

Hollywood definitely loves a good scandal, doesn’t it? 2024 has been a year that has taken the drama to levels that even the boldest screenwriters wouldn’t dare script. This year has been a wild ride of jaw-dropping allegations, reputations unraveling faster than a celebrity marriage in Vegas, and public meltdowns.
The entertainment industry has found itself in the eye of a storm, with controversies that are not just messy but outright explosive. From the disturbing accusations at music mogul Sean Diddy to the surprising backlash aimed at Blake Lively, the stories that have dominated headlines feel more like plotlines from a dark, twisty HBO series than real life.
Justin Timberlake, Blake Lively, and Jennifer Lopez

Jim Carrey opened up about the possibility of returning to his iconic role in The Mask, 20 years after the idea for a sequel was first floated. The original The Mask follows Stanley Ipkiss (Carrey), a mild-mannered bank clerk who transforms into a mischievous, wild version of himself when he dons a mysterious green mask. The film was a major box office success, grossing $351.5M worldwide and launching Carrey into superstardom. Carrey's talk of a sequel came after years of speculation about Carrey’s potential involvement in a sequel to the 1994 cult hit.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, he confirmed that while he has no interest in revisiting the character for the sake of monetary gain, a return is possible under the right conditions. Carrey explained that, for him, it’s not about cashing in on the success of the original film, but rather ensuring that any potential sequel offers...

Jill Roberts, played by Emma Roberts, is one of the best Ghostfaces in the Scream franchise and someone needs to figure out how to get her back into the series. Where Scream 4 ranks in the Scream franchise is up for debate, but Jill Roberts has always been one of the best characters to don the Ghostface mask. Scream 4, stylized SCRE4M, takes place on the 15th anniversary of the Woodsboro murders depicted in Scream. Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) returns to town after 10 years when murders start occurring once again.
Like the other films in the Scream franchise, Scream 4 combines slasher movie tropes with knowing winks at the audience. Along with the usual satirical elements about sequels and horror, this 2011 movie includes relevant commentary about social media and the pursuit of internet fame, themes that are somehow even more relevant over a decade later. Though they got their start on television as brilliant creations of Jim Henson, the Muppet movies helped solidify the legacy of Kermit and the gang. For nearly 50 years, The Muppets have inhabited diverse worlds, retold traditional tales, and spoofed popular stories and genres. With a witty writing team initially led by Henson, these characters have indelibly found a way to capture hearts and minds through hilarious one-liners, absurd scenarios, and the instantly loveable Muppet characters. That translated to the big screen adventures, though not every Muppets movie was a success.
While Henson's Muppets have experienced a long period of television success, their theatrical releases have not always been received well by audiences and critics alike. Some have been flops that lost track of what Muppets movies should be, some put The Muppets in exciting stories where they didn't seem to belong, and some were Oscar-winning box-office hits that reminded audiences...

Rising star Rachel Zegler has her pick of work, from starring in Disney’s live action adaptation of “Snow White” to making her Broadway debut in “Romeo + Juliet,” but she’s ready to work with some non-human talent for a change. As part of Variety’s New York Issue, Zegler spoke with the publication about her career and the roles she hopes to take on, including being the main player in a Muppet movie.
“Michael Caine did it for ‘Christmas Carol,’” she said. “Tim Curry did it for ‘Muppet Treasure Island.’ I want to be the one!”
Other talent have taken up this mantle in recent history as well, with Ashanti playing Dorothy in 2005’s “The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz” and Jason Segel and Amy Adams starring in 2011’s “The Muppets.” Its most recent entry was a Halloween special in 2021 called “Muppets Haunted Mansion,” a tie-in with the famous Disney ride.

The Evil Kermit meme, with dark Kermit representing the subconscious thoughts, became unexpectedly popular on social media in 2016. Dark Kermit's meme popularity allowed people to embrace and acknowledge their intrusive or absurd thoughts in a humorous way. The Evil Kermit meme's origin can be traced back to the movie 'Muppets Most Wanted,' where Kermit confronts a dark Kermit named Constantine.

After years of anticipation, New York Comic Con's Percy Jackson and the Olympians panel treated fans to an exclusive look at clips from the upcoming Disney+ show's first episodes. The results were impressive, pulling key lines, locations, and moments in The Lightning Thief novel to television. The show boasts a talented supporting cast opposite Walker Scobell's Percy -- including Glynn Turman, Jason Mantzoukas, Megan Mullally, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the late Lance Reddick -- and an experienced director for its opening episodes in James Bobin.
A veteran of Sacha Baron Cohen's Da Ali G Show, Bobin has since gone on to direct 2011's The Muppets and its sequel Muppets Most Wanted, as well as the live-action Dora the Explorer adaptation Dora and the Lost City of Gold. There’s never been a creative artist quite like Jim Henson. The Mississippi-born Henson was arguably the world’s most famous puppeteer, but he was much more than that. A cartoonist, actor, inventor, animator, writer and filmmaker, Henson was in a class by himself, whether his work appeared in films or on television. In addition, Henson founded the enormously successful Jim Henson Company, an entertainment mainstay that has lived on to produce family entertainment long after Henson’s untimely death in 1990.
After Henson got his start at age 18 creating puppets for a local station in Washington, D.C., he was approached by the Children’s Television Workshop to help develop a new series for PBS, “Sesame Street.” Soon kids around the world were marveling at the antics of Big Bird and his friends, and the show’s success led Henson to expand his Muppet empire with such further successful series...

Tony Bennett's first record, "Because of You" was released in 1952 and it instantly codified the entertainer as one of the music world's great crooners. In 1962, his 15th record, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" was certified platinum by the RIAA, but that was after he had already established himself with Count Basie and his Orchestra and as a great fan of songwriter Harold Arlen. All told, he released 61 records in his decades-long career, not including his eight albums of collaborations and duets. He sang with Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Ray Charles, Carrie Underwood, Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Mariah Carey, Bono, Sting, Paul McCartney, Diana Krall, and many others. Most recently, he released two collaborations with Lady Gaga in 2018 and 2021. Bennett passed away on July 21, 2023 at the age of 96. He will be deeply missed.

The Modern Family cast created one of the most beloved sitcom ensembles of all time with the actors being a big reason for the show's success. With the Pritchetts as the nuclear family and the Dunphys and Tucker-Pritchetts attached, there were a whole lot of highs and lows among this brood of family members. The series was a hit throughout its 11 seasons, and now that it has ended, many fans wonder what the Modern Family cast has been up to since then.
The eclectic ensemble featured everything from veterans of the television world to complete newcomers who audiences watched grow up on screen. Before Modern Family was canceled after season 11, the series won 22 Emmys, a Golden Globe, and three Critics' Choice Television Awards. Every few months, it seems someone from Hollywood says the same thing: There are no true movie stars anymore. Blockbusters are now carried by brands and franchises, and the days of actors being able to sell a movie on their marketability alone have long since passed. How did this happen? There are a variety of possible reasons, but we’ll propose just one: movies just don’t have The Muppets in them anymore.
It has been almost 10 years since Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Scooter, and their various crafted cohorts graced theater screens in “Muppets Most Wanted,” which saw the acclaimed comedy group stage a prison break. Since then, the beloved creations of Jim Henson have been confined to the small screen, where they captured the hearts and minds of audiences everywhere via a strong candidate for the most influential sketch comedy series of all time: 1976-1981’s “The Muppet Show.

The romance film Love Again features an international cast including one iconic music artist in her largest movie role yet. Love Again is the American remake of the German rom-com SMS für Dich and revolves around a relationship that brews between a woman grieving the death of her fiancé and a journalist who accidentally starts receiving texts from her. With famed singer Celine Dion in the mix as an unexpected matchmaker, the movie ultimately serves as a wholesome tale for those who need a second shot at finding true love.
For director James C. Strouse, Love Again is another opportunity to explore themes of love and loss, similar to his previous movies People, Places, Things and The Incredible Jessica James. Featuring numerous Celine Dion needle drops along with the single “Love Again” recorded exclusively for the soundtrack, the movie doubles as a celebration of the singer's music. The Love Again...

After more than 40 years in the business, Christoph Waltz’s list of awards – including two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes and two Baftas – may be almost as long as his filmography. His first performances, for example as Maksymilian Gierymski in 1997’s Our God’s Brother or Karl August in 1999’s The Bride, probably won’t be familiar to audiences outside of Germany. But then he made the crossover to Hollywood, thanks to Quentin Tarantino casting him as Hans “the Jew Hunter” Landa, a Nazi, in 2009’s Inglourious Basterds, and again as the dentist turned bounty hunter Dr King Schultz in 2012’s Django Unchained.

The upcoming Mean Girls movie musical will feature two cast members from the original film reprising their roles. The iconic 2004 teen comedy, which was written by Tina Fey, was originally adapted to Broadway by Fey, Jeff Richmond, and Nell Benjamin. Now it's being adapted into a feature starring Angourie Rice as transfer student Cady Heron, Reneé Rapp as queen bee Regina George, Auli’i Cravalho and Jaquel Spivey as Cady's friends Janis and Damian, and Bebe Wood and Avantika Vandanapu as Regina's cronies Gretchen and Karen.

Fey revealed that the film, which she also wrote, will begin shooting on March 6. She also let it slip that she and Tim Meadows will be reprising their original roles as math teacher Ms.

Starring alongside Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Liotta played a small but crucial role in the oft-memed animated cult classic Bee Movie. Liotta is a legend of the silver screen, who first rose to prominence with his role in Something Wild and went on to play such iconic characters as Henry Hill in Goodfellas and Shoeless Joe Jackson in Field of Dreams. Liotta appeared in a wide range of projects, from bleak, brutal, ultraviolent thrillers, like Killing Them Softly, to lighthearted family-friendly comedies like, Muppets Most Wanted. Sadly, Liotta passed away in 2022 while filming Dangerous Waters, but he left behind a huge fan base and an impressive body of work.
In particular, Liotta has become known for animation due to his very rich, distinctive voice. In his review of Marriage Story, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw wrote, “What a thrill to hear [Liotta’s] syrupy-gravelly voice again.” Liotta also played Moe’s father, Morty Szyslak,...

Early in 2010, Bret McKenzie decided it was about time he started guitar lessons. The New Zealand-born actor and songwriter enrolled himself in a class at the Silverlake Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, a music school founded in 2001 by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea. McKenzie’s new guitar teacher was naturally curious about what had inspired him to head back to school alongside children and beginners. He told him he had a show coming up. “He was like: ‘Oh that’s good, where are you playing?’” recalls the 46-year-old in his broad Kiwi accent. Sitting in the light and airy home studio above his garage in Wellington, he contorts his more-salt-than-pepper beard into an awkward grimace. “I was like: ‘Er, yeah... we’re playing the Hollywood Bowl.” He bursts out laughing. “Something very strange happened there.”

When I was in college, a professor of mine credited two films with birthing modern European arthouse cinema: Federico Fellini's "8 1/2" and Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal." Their black-and-white cinematography aside, the two movies couldn't be more different from one another. Where Fellini's meta-fictional comedy is a series of relentlessly moving images full of zest and zeal, Bergman's historical drama is a somber period piece, his camera typically static as it fixates on the faces of the film's weary travelers. "8 1/2" is a surreal celebration of life in all its disorder; "The Seventh Seal" is a dour meditation on the existential conundrum of religious faith.
Yes, I just quoted the Swedish Chef from "Muppets Most Wanted." I only steal from the best, after all.

This week’s question is inspired by a comment by reader Danielm80 (in response to last week’s question):
How would you cast The Muppets’ Princess Bride?
In the tradition of all Muppets movies, one major character must be played by a human, with the rest of the cast filled out by Muppets. (Other humans may make cameo appearances.) I’ve illustrated this post with an image of Miss Piggy in a wedding dress purely for aesthetic purposes: I think Buttercup, as the straight woman of the story, should probably be the one character played by a human.
I think I might cast Gonzo as Westley. And I’ll leave the rest to you.
(You can also discuss this at Substack or Patreon, if you prefer. You don’t need to be a paying subscriber to comment, but you will need to register with either site to do so.

While the late, great Ray Liotta will likely be immortalized due to his riveting work in the crime drama realm, we shouldn't gloss over the actor's comedic sensibilities. Whether the comedic cruelty of his character Ray Sinclair in "Something Wild," the playful spirit of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson in "Field of Dreams," or imposing cellmate Big Papa in the delightful "Muppets Most Wanted," Liotta's acting chops were not solely reserved for thrilling capers.
As such, it feels appropriate to highlight a sitcom cameo that might have flown under the radar for even the most devoted Liotta fans. In 2001, Liotta played a parody...

Ray Liotta, the intense actor from New Jersey best known for his turn as the hustler turned mob rat Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese’s GoodFellas, has died. He was 67.
