Gold Coast Film Fest to screen Broke, A Month of Sundays, Observance, Spear
Steve Le Marquand in Broke.

The 14th annual Gold Coast Film Festival will screen Australian features Spear, Broke, A Month of Sundays, Girl Asleep, Crushed, Observance and The Hunters Club, and play host to guests including Reg Cribb, David Stratton, Claudia Karvan and Gracie Otto.

Director Stephen Page will also make his debut at the fest..

Page and his leading man (and son) Hunter Page-Lochard, star of the upcoming ABC-tv series Cleverman, will attend a screening of Spear, followed by a Q&A session.

The team behind Broke - director Heath Davis, producer Luke Graham and actors Steve Le Marquand and Max Cullen - will attend the film's Queensland premiere.

The film follows the story of disgraced rugby league star and gambling addict, Ben .Bk. Kelly, who attempts to turn his life around with the support of his two biggest fans..

Halloween release for Oz thriller
Lemon Tree Passage, an Australian supernatural thriller inspired by an urban legend, will open in a limited number of cinemas on October 31, tying in with Halloween.

Produced by Jeremy Ervine and directed and co-written by David Campbell, the plot follows three American backpackers who learn about the ghost of a motorcyclist that stalks young motorists and encounter something far more evil.

The cast is headed by Jessica Tovey (Wonderland, Tracks), Pippa Black (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Nicholas Gunn (The Hunters Club, Neighbours), Tim Phillipps (TV.s Chopper, The Secret Circle), Tim Pocock (Dance Academy) and Andrew Ryan (Not Suitable for Children, Tomorrow, When the War Began).

Campbell and Erica Brien wrote the screenplay after he saw a segment aired on Today Tonight in 2010 dealing with teenagers who were caught speeding in Lemon Tree Passage Road in Port Stephens and told the cops they saw a ghostly light.

If you already have low expectations for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, you might not be interested in seeing the first film by Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola. It won’t exactly do much for your interest in the new action-infused fairy tale. But if you’re like me and are fascinated by the calling card short films of Hollywood moviemakers, you’ll want to check out Remake. Anyway, it’s under seven minutes, so you’re not wasting too much time. The short was produced in Australia in 2006, and Wirkola shares helming duties on the film with Kit McDee (who has his own action feature with the word “hunters” in it out this year called The Hunters Club Movie).
