Ruben Östlund, the filmmaker behind this year’s Palme d’Or-winning film “Triangle of Sadness” out of Cannes, posted to his Instagram Wednesday morning to honor the late star of his film, Charlbi Dean.

A South African actress and model on-the-rise, Dean died suddenly Monday due to an unexpected illness. She was 32.

“Charlbi’s sudden passing is a shock and a tragedy,” Östlund wrote. “It is an honor to have gotten to know and work with her.”

Swedish director Ruben Ostlund has reacted to the sudden death of Charlbi Dean, the star of his Palme d’Or winning film “Triangle of Sadness.” Ostlund posted an emotional tribute on social media, saying her death was “a shock and a tragedy.”

“It is an honor to have gotten to know and work with her. Charlbi had a care and sensitivity that lifted her colleagues and the entire film crew,” Ostlund wrote.

“The thought that she will not be by our side in the future makes me very sad,” the director continued.

Charlbi Dean, a young, up-and-coming South African actor who most recently starred in this year’s Palme d’Or winner “Triangle of Sadness,” died Monday in New York from an unexpected illness, Variety has confirmed. She was 32.

Dean also appeared in the DC Comics series “Black Lightning” on The CW. She played the highly skilled assassin Syonide throughout nine episodes over two seasons.

She made her acting debut in the South African film “Spud” in 2010 and returned in the 2013 sequel

“Spud 2: The Madness Continues.”

“Triangle of Sadness,” a satirical dark comedy directed by Ruben Östlund, marked her first major film. Dean was the co-lead, opposite Harris Dickinson. Charlbi Dean, the star of this year’s Palme d’Or-winning film at Cannes, “Triangle of Sadness,” who also appeared in The CW series “Black Lightning,” has died, TheWrap has confirmed. The actress was 32.

Dean died Monday in New York City after a sudden and unexpected illness. No other details were immediately available.

Dean played the character Yaya in the film “Triangle of Sadness” from director Ruben Östlund, portraying a high-end fashion model who gets the chance to attend a cruise for the uber-wealthy as a social media influencer. On “Black Lightning,” she portrayed the character Syonide, a deadly assassin and the daughter of the show’s main antagonist Tobias Whale.

Straight Outta Compton is set to enjoy its second weekend at the box office starting today, and many speculate that it will once again come out on top. After conquering the end of the summer season with this well-received biopic, it looks like the movie's producer and subject, Ice Cube, will reteam with his son, O'Shea Jackson Jr., who plays the iconic rapper on screen. Only this time, they will be starring in the movie together. Maybe.

Donovan Marsh, best known for INumber Number, Spud and Spud 2: The Madness Continues, is set to direct April 29, 1992. The thriller will revolve around the infamous L.A. Riots that took place on that day. It was initially reported that Ice Cube and O'Shea Jackson Jr. would be starring in the movie as father and son. But shortly after the news broke, Ice Cube's publicist issued a statement.
