Cillian Murphy is back on screen in a new film called Steve, and here’s a first look. The movie is based on the 2023 novella Shy by Max Porter, and it’s hitting select cinemas this September. After that, it’ll be available to stream on Netflix starting October 3, 2025.

Steve tells the story of a headteacher and a group of troubled boys at a reform school. The whole film takes place over one very intense day. Murphy plays the headteacher, while Jay Lycurgo takes on the role of Shy, one of the boys at the school. Tracey Ullman, Simbi Ajikawo, and Emily Watson are also in the cast.

The film is directed by Tim Mielants and was written by Max Porter, who adapted it from his own book. Murphy and Porter have worked together before on both stage and screen, and this new project is another collaboration between the two.

Netflix’s movies – to me, anyway – always fall neatly into two categories. There are the big audience blockbusters, such as The Electric State, Carry-On, and the upcoming The Old Guard 2 and Happy Gilmore 2, and then there’s the prestige fare. Sometimes the two categories meet, such as with the Knives Out movies, but for the most part, they are distinct. As much as some of their blockbusters seem to vanish into the ether of streaming, they’ve also bankrolled some intriguing prestige fare that rank among the most acclaimed films of our era, such as Roma, Marriage Story, The Irishman, and many others. After a quiet 2024 that saw them throw all their eggs into the Emilia Perez basket, the streamer is back with a bumper crop of awards fare this year, including Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, and more.

Oscar winner Cillian Murphy’s next feature, Steve, will receive a theatrical release in select cinemas in September before dropping on Netflix on October 3. We’ve got a first-look image of Murphy in the eponymous role – scroll down to check it out.

Murphy also produces the reform school drama under his Big Things Films banner with partner Alan Moloney, and in collaboration with Netflix which handles global distribution. The release dates could point to fall film festival play.

Blue Miburo , an upcoming TV anime based on the historical fiction / samurai manga, has revealed a new cast addition for the series. In the series, voice actor Megumi Ogata (Muku Shinto in Shy ) plays the role of Kikuchiyo, a young man who is actually the shogun Tokugawa Iemochi. Blue Miburo broadcasts in Japan beginning on October 19, 2024. Crunchyroll will also stream the series as part of the fall 2024 anime simulcast lineup.
