Funny Footage: 6 Found Footage Horror Comedies to Watch
Image
Studies suggest that human laughter might have evolved as a way of communicating that a perceived source of danger is actually harmless. That’s why it makes sense that horror comedies were invented almost immediately after actual horror films, as there’s no better way of dealing with fear than laughing at media-induced collective nightmares.

This ancient custom even applies to more recent and immersive sub-genres, as not even the visceral scares of Found Footage movies are immune to the occasional dose of dark humor. With that in mind, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six Found Footage horror-comedies for your viewing pleasure. After all, not every Pov horror flick needs to be an ultra serious compilation of glitches and jump-scares.

While this list is obviously based on personal opinion, we’ll be limiting entries to original Found Footage movies only – which means no spoofs or...

What’s Leaving Netflix in March 2025
Image
Pictures via Netflix, Warner Bros. Pictures, Sony Pictures and Hulu

2025 is in full swing, and with March just around the corner, it’s time for you to look ahead at the movies and series scheduled to depart Netflix throughout the month of March. The biggest notable TV series leaving is The Mindy Project, while hit films like Scooby-Doo and Love Again, among others, are also set to depart.

As always, Netflix’s library is constantly evolving. That means new titles are always on the way, but because Netflix licenses titles from big distributors, they’re not always on Netflix forever. When this license (or rental period) comes to an end, the movie or series leaves Netflix.

Note: This list will be constantly updated throughout February as we learn of more series and movies set to leave (typically 30 days before their departure). In the last few weeks of the month, Netflix...

Wayans Brothers' 'Scary Movie' Reboot Lands Summer 2026 Release Date
Image
The Scary Movie franchise is set to return to the big screen 13 years after Scary Movie 5 opened in theaters. Launched in 2000, the Scary Movie franchise is a series of spoof movies that parodies popular horror films at the time. The franchise was a popular staple in theaters during the 2000s, with the five installments grossing a combined total of $896 million. After over a decade of the franchise lying dormant, the series is set to return with the original creative team to give a new generation of horror a comedic spin.

The Wrap revealed that the Scary Movie reboot will open in theaters on Jun. 12, 2026. Marlon Wayans confirmed the release date on Instagram (see below). Marlon is reteaming with his brothers, Shawn Wayans and Keenen Ivory Wayans, to pen the script for their first collaboration since 2009's Dance Flick. Joining the Wayans brothers on screenwriting duties is Rick Alvarez, whose...

Scary Movie 6 gets a Summer 2026 release date
Image
Twelve years have gone by since the release of a new entry in the Scary Movie horror parody series – but the franchise isn’t going to remain dormant for much longer. Last April, it was announced that the Miramax label at Paramount, which is now operating under new boss Jonathan Glickman, had given the greenlight to a new Scary Movie sequel, with the plan being to get the film into theatres sometime in 2025. Now we know exactly when the new movie is going to be released… but it’s not going to be this year. Scary Movie 6 is scheduled to reach theatres on June 12, 2026. As of right now, we know this is going to put it in direct competition with the next movie from the Daniels, the directing duo behind Best Picture Oscar winner Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The Scary Movie series is being revived with the help...

‘Cult of Chucky’ Is One of Six New Horror Arrivals to Netflix in February
Image
The bad news? Netflix is once again raising its prices, with ad-supported subscriptions rising $1 to $7.99/month and premium ad-free subscriptions rising $2 to $24.99/month.

The good news? Well, at least Cult of Chucky is coming back to Netflix!

Don Mancini’s Cult of Chucky, which brought Chucky into a mental institution back in 2017, is headed to Netflix on February 1, the streaming service has announced this morning.

The seventh installment of the Child’s Play/Chucky franchise introduced the idea of multiple killer Chucky dolls and also firmly integrated original Child’s Play franchise characters Andy and Kyle back into the mix, the film also starring Fiona Dourif and Jennifer Tilly. The events of Cult of Chucky set the stage for the “Chucky” television series, which was cancelled just last year.

Bloody Disgusting’s review raved back in 2017, “Seventh films have no right to be this good or break this much new ground. Cult of Chucky...

Wayans Brothers Plan Sixth ‘Scary Movie’ for Next Year
Image
Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans are shaking the cobwebs off the Scary Movie franchise. On Tuesday, the brothers formally announced their return to the comedy horror series for a six installment. News of the comedy horror revival first made headlines in April during Paramount’s CinemaCon.

Marlon Wayans shared his excitement for the age-old franchise in an Instagram post Tuesday, posed next to a grinning grim reaper.

Essence Atkins Says Working With Damon Wayans Sr. on ‘Poppa’s House’ Was Her ‘Last Frontier’ With the Iconic Comedy Family
Image
Essence Atkins said the opportunity to star in CBS’ new sitcom “Poppa’s House” alongside Damon Wayans Sr. completed her nearly 30-year-long career working with the iconic Wayans family.

“It was Damon. I never worked with Senior before; I worked with [Damon Wayans] Junior on ‘Dance Flick.’ I had worked with basically with the entire [first] generation,” Atkins told TheWrap of her decision to sign on for the series. “Like, everybody but Damon, who is iconic and amazing and has done such incredible pioneering work in the realm of comedy, and so I just felt like he was my last frontier in this family. I was like, ‘I got to work with Damon.'”

Atkins stars in “Poppa’s House” as Dr. Ivy Reed, a driven and confident psychologist who joins veteran radio host Poppa (Wayans) as his new co-lead in an effort to boost his show’s dwindling ratings.

“Dr. Ivy is, she is all heart,...

“I’ve been to plenty Diddy parties”: Diddy’s Close Friend Reveals What He Saw at His Parties
Image
Rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs has been facing a lot of controversies and backlash as of late, following all the misconduct allegations and civil s*xual assault lawsuits that multiple people and artists hit him with. Besides other accusations of some serious offenses against his name, quite a few of the allegations seem to have stemmed from the music titan’s infamous parties.

However, one of Combs’ close friends recently popped up to shed light on these accusations as a prime witness of some of those parties. This was none other than Marlon Wayans, and according to him, he never personally got to come across any of the supposed debauchery other party-goers have described going down at the record producer’s notorious throwdown.

Marlon Wayans Blasts the Weinsteins for Stealing His ‘Scary Movie 3’ Ideas
Image
While there is certainly no shortage of reasons to hate Harvey and Bob Weinstein, you can add “the way they treated the Wayans family” to the staggeringly long list.

It’s easy to forget just how wildly popular the first entry in the long-running Scary Movie franchise was. Directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, 2000’s Scary Movie made a whopping $278 million at the worldwide box office. To put that in perspective, Scream, the movie it was directly parodying, only made $173 million. And the Wayans’ Scary Movie 2 was also a big hit, even without that cameo from Marlon Brandon.

Despite these achievements, Ivory Wayans, as well as his brothers and co-writers Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans, weren’t a part of Scary Movie 3. Why? Marlon has previously bemoaned the “evil” and “disrespectful” Weinsteins, whose company produced the Scary Movie films. Now he’s provided even more details about what happened while...

The Compelling History of Black Horror Films Showcases Cultural Significance

It’s important to talk about the groundbreaking films Black Americans made or acted in because they paved the way for Black films and actors today. It’s important to recognize films that have Black actors or creators because they are frequently overlooked by the industry and the general audience. Award shows like the Oscars are in a way helping keep Black films silenced because they are slow to expand their diversity efforts. An audience needs to be exposed to different types of stories in film because diversity exists in real life so it should be reflected on screen. ‘A Haunted House’ and the Death of the Horror Spoof Movie
Image
Due to a complex series of anthropological mishaps, the Wayans Brothers are a huge deal in Brazil. Around these parts, White Chicks is considered a national treasure by a lot of people, so it stands to reason that Brazilian audiences would continue to accompany the Wayans’ comedic output long after North America had stopped taking them seriously as comedic titans.

This is the only reason why I originally watched Michael Tiddes and Marlon Wayans’ 2013 horror spoof A Haunted House – appropriately known as “Paranormal Inactivity” in South America – despite having abandoned this kind of movie shortly after the excellent Scary Movie 3. However, to my complete and utter amazement, I found myself mostly enjoying this unhinged parody of Found Footage films almost as much as the iconic spoofs that spear-headed the genre during the 2000s. And with Paramount having recently announced a reboot of the Scary Movie franchise, I think this...

How Mel Brooks Almost Died Making ‘Spaceballs’
Image
Parody movies can help lampoon recent trends in popular culture, but truly great comedies stand the test of time. This is what differentiates the work of Mel Brooks from modern spoof movies like A Haunted House or Scary Movie; Brooks’ films are universally hilarious, even for those who aren’t familiar with the original source material that he is making fun of. Star Wars fans are bound to get a kick out of Brooks’ uproarious 1987 comedy Spaceballs, but the film is still funny for those who haven’t seen a frame of the franchise. Brooks was able to turn a simple spoof like Spaceballs into an all-time comedy classic, but it was no easy task. In fact, Brooks was so committed to bringing the film’s heroes and villains to life that he nearly gave his life in the name of comedy.

Exclusive: The Blackening Cast Discuss Its Universal Appeal and More
Image
In the vein of the Scary Movie and A Haunted House franchises, The Blackening is written and co-produced by co-star Dewayne Perkins (The Amber Ruffin Show) alongside screenwriter Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip), and is directed by Tim Story (Barbershop). Arguably destined to be an instant classic, it all takes place during a secluded cabin getaway adventure that brings back together a group of friends. A horror comedy, The Blackening, is the refreshingly hilarious anti-trope of the scary movie cliché where the Black person dies first. In this case, all the characters are Black. Thus, the uproarious hook: they can't all die first.

Taking place against the backdrop of Juneteenth — a national holiday that is set aside to honor the emancipation of enslaved African Americans — The Blackening has an innovative plot that was directly inspired by and developed from a smash hit viral Comedy Central sketch also called “The Blackening” which...

The Blackening Review: Fun, Funny, and Fearlessly Black
Image
Juneteenth is a national holiday that is set aside to honor the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. In The Blackening, a group of, well, Black friends rent a secluded cabin for the weekend to celebrate. It’s mostly all good until they encounter a Blackface “Sambo” game.

It's creepy to look at, with its offensively bright red lips, and is equally frightening to listen to. “Play the game or die,” it insists. The game includes a series of witty but challenging questions about Black culture that sets up the film. What happens if the entire cast is Black? Who, then, dies first? In terms of "wokeness" and knowledge about Black history and popular culture, the game requires this to be the person who is "the Blackest." With universal charm and relatable humor, The Blackening is an uproarious and politically incorrect salute to friendship within the Black culture and a warm-hearted re-awakening within the horror genre.

Half Baked 2 Gets Official Title, R Rating & Is Aiming for 2023 Release

The long-awaited sequel to the 1998 stoner comedy cult hit Half Baked has at last been given an official title alongside an R rating. According to Filmratings.com, Half Baked 2 will go by the full title Half Baked: Totally High and has been rated R for “for drug use throughout, sexual content, language, graphic nudity and some violence.” So pretty much exactly what you’d expect from a follow-up to the Dave Chappelle and Jim Breuer-led comedy. Half Baked 2 Sees Return of Original Movie's Mary Jane Actor
Image
The upcoming stoner comedy sequel Half Baked 2 will feature Rachel True reprising her original role. True played Mary Jane Potman in the 1998 film Half Baked, which starred Dave Chappelle, Jim Breuer, Harland Williams, and Guillermo Díaz, as a group of friends who love smoking weed. She is the love interest for Chappelle's character Thurgood, which presents a problem considering the fact that - despite her suggestive name - she is vehemently anti-drug.

Per Deadline, Half Baked 2 has just wrapped production in Baton Rouge. The film, which will be released non-theatrically in 2023, has announced that True (who is perhaps known for her role in the 1996 teen film The Craft) officially reprised the role of Mary Jane. So far, she is the only returning cast member who has been confirmed to appear in a major role, though Williams is also set to make a special appearance.

The 20 Greatest Parody Movies In Cinema History
Ghost Bastards - Putain de fantôme (2013)
It's very disheartening to see how parody movies have declined in the past few decades. Franchises like "A Haunted House" or "Scary Movie" are no longer funny, and they don't understand what spoofs need to do to be clever. A parody isn't defined by the number of current pop culture references or celebrity cameos it can fit in. At their best, parody movies should be able to offer insights into why a genre is worth poking fun at.

The internet era has certainly made it more challenging to come up with original gags. Filmgoers are overexposed to late-night jokes, "Saturday Night Live" sketches, satirical film reviews,...

New on Netflix: June 2021 Releases
Image
You know what everyone could use in the sweltering summer months? A nice, cold glass of…anime. At least that’s the particular theme that comes up in Netflix’s list of new releases for June 2021.

Netflix has been quietly expanding their anime offerings for awhile now but June is a particularly anime-heavy month. The absolutely metal sounding Record of Ragnarok arrives this month. So too do parts 1 and 2 of the newest Sailor Moon film on June 3 and Godzilla Singular Point on June 24.

Tisha Campbell, Essence Atkins, Tahj Mowry Among Five Cast in ABC Pilot ‘Black Don’t Crack’
Image
Tisha Campbell, Essence Atkins, Tahj Mowry, Isaiah Mustafa, and Beth Grant have all been cast in ABC’s multi-cam comedy pilot “Black Don’t Crack,” Variety has learned.

The group joins previously announced series star Sherri Shepherd. The show follows three former sorority sisters who lost touch after college and reunite during a pivotal point in their lives. The show marks a reunion for Mowry and Atkins, who previously starred together in the Disney series “Smart Guy.”

Campbell will play Tasha Marks, described as a hip and fabulous Atlanta restaurateur who starts trends instead of following them. She holds nothing back and is brutally honest (sometimes to a fault) with her friends, but has been avoiding a truth in her own life. She’s achieved the perfect professional life and insists that she needs no man in her life to interfere with the career she’s worked so hard to create.

Kid Cosmic (2021)
New on Netflix: February 2021 Releases
Kid Cosmic (2021)
February may be the shortest month, but that doesn’t mean streaming services can ignore their duty to entertain us at all times. In that mission, Netflix is making a decent effort in February 2021. This isn’t the most jam-packed month the major streamer has trotted out just yet but there are plenty of new originals to get the job done.

Netflix has a few original series of note this month. The party begins with Kid Cosmic on Feb. 2. This animated series is a comic-tinged adventure from Craig McCracken, creator of the Powerpuff Girls. That’s followed by the Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl-starring Firefly Lane on Feb. 3 and Behind Her Eyes on Feb. 17. Perhaps the biggest sleeper this month, however, is Tribes of Europa. This post-apocalyptic adventure series premieres on Feb. 19.

There are also quite a few intriguing Netflix original movies in February 2021. Malcolm and Marie stars John David Washington...

Marlon Wayans Says He Definitely Wants To Make White Chicks 2
Image
The Wayans brothers have never exactly been bastions of high quality cinema, with Marlon in particular a repeat offender responsible for a string of terrible comedies like Little Man, Dance Flick, A Haunted House and the sequel, Fifty Shades of Black, Naked and Sextuplets. None of those movies found anything even approaching critical acclaim, but several of them did decent business at the box office and the 48 year-old has been collaborating with Netflix on a regular basis, so there must be a good sized audience for his work.

One entry from the writer/actor/producer’s back catalogue that’s remained inexplicably popular is White Chicks, the 2004 comedic effort directed by Keenen Ivory and starring Shawn and Marlon in the lead roles. It sees two sibling FBI agents go undercover and end up tasked with protecting the socialite Wilson sisters, before eventually being forced to disguise themselves as the titular white chicks.

HBO Max Signs Overall Deal With Marlon Wayans, Sets Pilot Development For Comedy ‘Book Of Marlon’ & Greenlights Stand-Up Specials
Image
Marlon Wayans is getting into business with HBO Max. The actor and comedian has struck an overall deal with the WarnerMedia streaming service and has set a number of projects.

The digital platform is developing a pilot for Book of Marlon, where he plays a fictionalized version of himself as he attempts to reconcile being a good person and father with being Marlon. Wayans has co-created the show with his long-time producing partner Rick Alvarez and will star. Wayans and Alvarez have written the pilot.

It is the first scripted project that HBO Max and Wayans have identified as part of a first-look deal at his scripted and unscripted projects.

Separately, he will perform a stand-up special for the service as well as host another multi-act special. His own, as-yet-untitled special, will look at his life and will “dig even deeper” than his recent special Woke-ish.

It is the latest stand-up special for the service,...

Open Road Films, which declared bankruptcy two years ago, is relaunching with funding from Raven Capital Management. It will release Liam Neeson’s thriller “Honest Thief” later this summer.

The companies announced the news on Monday, the first day of the Cannes Virtual Market. Open Road was sold in late 2018 for $87.5 million to Raven, after parent company Tang Media Partners failed to raise fresh capital from its Chinese backers.

Led by Raven Principal James Masciello with support from Matt Sidari, Open Road Films said it will resume acquiring and releasing films theatrically in partnership with Tom Ortenberg’s Briarcliff Entertainment. Ortenberg was founding CEO of Open Road Films from 2011 to 2017 before he was ousted.

“Honest Thief” is directed by Mark Williams, co-creator of the Netflix series “Ozark,” from a script by Steve Allrich. Neeson portrays a bank robber who tries to turn himself in because he’s falling in love...

Most people don't get a chance to taste the victory of an important free speech ruling. On Friday, actor Marlon Wayans experienced success for the second time at California's Second Appellate District.

For several years now, Wayans has been defending his on- and off-set behavior during the making of A Haunted House 2. He's been in court with Pierre Daniel, who alleges that Wayans subjected him to repeated offensive language about his African American race and tweeted his picture alongside Family Guy character Cleveland Brown with the comment, "Tell me this nigga doesn't look like…This Nigga!!!"...

Sextuplets Trailer Has Marlon Wayans Channeling His Inner Klump to Play 6 Siblings
Netflix has dropped the first trailer for their upcoming Sextuplets movie. Marlon Wayans stars and plays six characters in the comedy. Playing multiple characters in a comedy is not a new idea, but Wayans seems to be putting his own spin on things, though there have immediately been the inevitable comparisons to Eddie Murphy's roles in Coming to America and the Nutty Professor franchise. Mike Myers also did the same thing in the Austin Powers franchise.

Sextuplets features Marlon Wayans' character Alan as he and his wife are expecting their first child. Before the baby comes, Alan is intent on finding his birth mother and while doing research, he meets his brother, Russell, and discovers that he was born a sextuplet. From there, the duo seek to find the four other siblings. Things unfold rather quickly in the trailer as we're introduced to all of Alan's siblings and everything goes off the rails.

Marlon Wayans & Marlon Wayans in Trailer for 'Sextuplets' for Netflix
"Since we hit the road together, I've done things I've only seen on television." Netflix has just launched an official trailer for a new comedy from Marlon Wayans titled Sextuplets, and it looks as awful as it sounds and seems just from that title alone. From the director of the spoofs A Haunted House and Fifty Shades of Black comes a new comedy about an expecting father-to-be who discovers that he has many other siblings and tries to track them down before his baby is born. This is a spoof on, another comedy, maybe? But who cares, it looks terrible. Marlon Wayans stars in the lead role, and plays all the other siblings, much like Tyler Perry does in his movies. The cast also includes Molly Shannon, Glynn Turman, Bresha Webb, Debbi Morgan, and Michael Ian Black. Why do they still make these kind of movies? It looks so, so bad.

‘On the Rocks’: Marlon Wayans Joins Sofia Coppola’s Apple/A24 Movie
Bill Murray at an event for Broken Flowers (2005)
It comes as little surprise that Bill Murray is in Sofia Coppola’s upcoming “On the Rocks,” but the latest addition to the cast is a bit unusual: Marlon Wayans, who just joined the joint venture between Apple and A24. The actor, comedian, and screenwriter has mostly appeared in comedies throughout his career, from spoofs like “Scary Movie” and “A Haunted House” to TV series like “In Living Color” and his sitcom “Marlon,” but his filmography is not without auteur projects: Wayans worked with Darren Aronofsky on “Requiem for a Dream” and the Coen Brothers on “The Ladykillers.”

He’s also been involved with several Netflix projects of late, starring in 2017’s “Naked” and the upcoming “Sextuplets”; the streaming service also has exclusive rights to “Marlon” in many regions, advertising it as a Netflix Original outside the Us. Deadline first broke the news of his casting.

“On the Rocks,” which...

‘Light From Light’: A Haunted House Premise Gives Way To A Gentle, Humanist Drama [Sundance Review]
Hell hath no fury like disappointed horror fans, so please don’t go to “Light from Light” expecting a horror movie, which it most certainly isn’t. Rather, the film is a gentle, humanist drama that uses the idea of a haunted house to explore themes of doubt, wonder, and the search for meaning in the modern world.
