These days, it seems like all anyone can talk about in Hollywood are "nepo babies." Originating in the early 2020s, "nepo baby" describes individuals whose success can be attributed to a parent or relative's previous success in the same industry due to nepotism. Plenty of celebrities have achieved accolades without fans knowing about their famously talented families. Some of the most iconic A-listers in film and TV owe their successes to extreme privilege, such as people like Ben Stiller, or Zoë Kravitz.
Most of the time, nepo babies are forced to wear their privilege on their sleeves just by virtue of their names, as Allison Williams (daughter of former NBC anchor Brian Williams) told Wired, "It doesn't feel like a loss to admit it ... If you trust your own skill, I think it becomes very simple to acknowledge." Others, like Jamie Lee Curtis, have spoken out against the ridicule towards nepotism babies in pop culture.

Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are two of the best young actors in the business, and they recently teamed up for a new A24 movie. After rising to fame as Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies, Pattinson has completely reinvented himself with an array of independent dramas. This includes several collaborations with the indie studio A24, starring in the Safdie brothers' Good Time, Claire Denis' High Life, and Robert Eggers' The Lighthouse in consecutive years from 2017 to 2019, though he has also starred in other well-regarded movies including Tenet, The Batman, and the Boy and the Heron English dub.
Similarly, Zendaya started her career on the Disney Channel sitcoms Shake It Up and K.C. Undercover, but has also completely redefined herself as a dramatic actor. This started with her role as Rue, a struggling drug-addicted teenager, in the HBO drama Euphoria. She has so far won two Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actress for her performance,...

Hollywood is called the land of dreams, but for some, those dreams are served with a silver spoon. The term “nepo baby” has certainly become a buzzword in recent years, and it does spark a debate about privilege. However, actors like Jack Quaid are lauded as some of the few who have truly earned their status.

People like to say, “It’s never too early” to do something, but that’s not always true. For example, it’s too early to predict next year’s Academy Awards before this year’s Academy Awards. But the 2025 Oscars are over, so now it’s time to start making predictions about what films will contend for the Oscars next year.
It’s already looking like the 98th Academy Awards will have a stronger field than the 97th. Blue chip filmmakers are returning from long breaks with exciting casts in tow. Each Safdie brother has their own A24 sports drama. There’s a new Avatar movie. It’s going to be an exciting, unpredictable year.

“Anora” took the Oscars by storm on Sunday, winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (for Mikey Madison), Best Editing and Best Original Screenplay. The contemporary story about a young sex worker (Madison) who falls in love with the son of a Russian oligarch had a fractured fairy tale message. And now it has its happily ever after.
But to those who had been paying attention, its big triumph felt like less of a surprise and more of a crescendo to a campaign that started almost a year ago and had finally reached its natural conclusion. What makes this particular success story so staggering is how deliberate and methodical it was, as distributor Neon closely followed its own playbook — one that led Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” to historic Oscar success five years ago. Add in a deliberate decision to keep “Anora” off of streaming for the duration of its awards run,...

The 97th annual Oscars paid tribute to the classic James Bond with a dance — led by “The Substance” star Margaret Qualley.
Qualley danced alongside a handful of male dancers in tuxes while she donned a red gown, but why was she on stage during the tribute?
While Qualley might be known for her performances in “The Substance” alongside Demi Moore, as well as “Maid,” “Kinds of Kindness,” “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” and “Poor Things,” she was a trained dance before pivoting into the world of acting.
Qualley, who is the daughter of Andie MacDowell and Paul J. Qualley, grew up dancing, and eventually studied dance at the North Carolina School of the Arts, where she trained as a ballet dancer. She also was an apprentice at the American Ballet Theatre while she attended the New York’s Professional Children’s School.

Over a year after tying the knot to Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff, Margaret Qualley also starred in The Substance, one of the most critically acclaimed movies in 2024. With her romance with the rockstar producer, some fans have been wondering: is Margaret Qualley pregnant?
Margaret has appeared in plenty of hit movies and TV shows, after making her debut in 2013’s Palo Alto. That same year, she starred in in the HBO series The Leftovers.
Since then, Margaret has plenty of other major films and shows, like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Fosse/Verdon, and Maid. Most recently, fans have been flocking to her after The Substance became an Oscar-nominated a hit.

An actor’s physicality is “one of the many strange things” about a career in performance, as Jesse Plemons says, and it’s not a quality he may try to manipulate any time soon.
In a recent profile with The Independent, the star of Netflix’s Zero Day reflected on having gained weight for 2015’s Black Mass, in which he portrayed a real-life mobster, admitting that he’s not sure the toll it took on him would be worth repeating.
“I never imagined getting to play a part like that,” he said. “[Gaining weight] was a decision I made at that age, given that opportunity for that director — and I was playing a real person. I don’t regret it. But it was very easy to put the weight on, and much more difficult taking it off. I don’t know if it’s something I would do again — because it did mess me up a bit.

Anyone looking to spice up their Valentine’s Day “viewing material” might want to look at the first image from Emerald Fennell’s upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights. The simple yet sensual image shows a close-up of someone’s mouth with blades of green grass caught between extended fingers. While you could be wondering, “What’s so sexy about grass?” let me remind you that botanophilia, referring to a sexual attraction to plants, exists. Imagine how many gardeners see this image and suddenly need to excuse themselves for an extended bathroom break. You know it in your heart to be true.
Emerald Fennell, the mad genius behind such films as Promising Youg Woman and Saltburn, directs, writes, and produces her adaptation of Wuthering Heights, based on Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel. The upcoming film stars Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw, Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, Shazad Latif as Edgar Linton, Hong Chau as Nelly Dean,...

Ridley Scott is pressing ahead with The Dog Stars, adding Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin and Guy Pearce to the cast.
During his press tour for Gladiator II, Ridley Scott revealed to Film Stories that a sci-fi project had been added to his upcoming slate, that was going to be a quick reunion with Paul Mescal. However, it would later emerge that Mescal had left the project because of his commitment to playing one of the Fab Four in Sam Mendes’ upcoming films based on The Beatles.
Still, the project is The Dog Stars, and it’s coming next from the bearded one.

Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, and Guy Pearce are in final talks to join Jacob Elordi in Ridley Scott's upcoming post-apocalyptic film The Dog Stars, Deadline reports. An adaptation of the 2012 Peter Heller novel of the same name, and written by Mark L. Smith, The Dog Stars is slated to be Scott's follow-up to his massively successful Gladiator II, which released last year and has grossed over $461 million worldwide.
The plot of The Dog Stars follows Hig (Elordi), a pilot living in Colorado following a worldwide pandemic that wiped out most of the Earth's human population. The official synopsis of the novel reads:
Hig's wife is gone, his friends are dead, and he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, Jasper, and a mercurial, gun-toting misanthrope named Bangley.
But when a random transmission beams through the radio of his 1956 Cessna, the voice ignites a hope...

Ridley Scott’s pandemic thriller, The Dog Stars, adds some significant star power today with Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, and Guy Pearce joining Jacob Elordi for an epic that finds a civilian pilot living a lonely life on an abandoned Colorado airbase with his dog and a hard-as-nails ex-marine. When a band of scavengers called The Reapers invades their space, Hig and his compatriots must prepare for battle.
The Dog Stars hails from 20th Century Studios and is based on the 2012 novel by Peter Heller (Burn, The River, The Painter, The Last Ranger). Initially, Scott was reteaming with Gladiator II star Paul Mescal for The Dog Stars, but scheduling conflicts with his part in Sam Mendes’ Beatles anthology kept him from participating. Sources say Mescal plays Paul McCartney in Mendes’ upcoming film, making him essential to the project.

It has been three years since Euphoria Season 2 wrapped, and it appears production on the anticipated and long-awaited Season 3 has begun. Created by Sam Levinson and based on the Israeli miniseries of the same name, Euphoria debuted on HBO in June 2019. The show's buzzy young cast, combined with compelling stories that looked to tackle teen romance, drama, and relationships in a way most television series avoid, made it a breakout title. HBO seemed to have found its new Game of Thrones-level sensation in an unlikely series, so the race to get more seasons out continues.

Emma Stone, standing 5 feet 6 inches (167.6 cm), is slightly taller than the average American woman but still shorter than her 6′2″ (1.88 m) husband, David McCary. While she now confidently rocks designer heels on the red carpet, her relationship with footwear wasn’t always so effortless.
Reflecting on an early fashion misstep, she once recalled, “On the first day of middle school, I wore high-heeled shoes that you weren’t allowed to wear. I remember being so embarrassed because in every class I went to they kept pointing out that I couldn’t wear these shoes. I wanted to call my mom and have her bring me new shoes!”

Kristoffer Borgli is still in the process of lining up the cast for his next film, The Drama, following his acclaimed, surreal Nicolas Cage-led satire Dream Scenario in 2023. A star-studded trio of Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Alana Haim already committed to the director's next wild ride last year, but there's yet another big, Emmy-nominated name that's been reported in connection with the title — Mamoudou Athie. Coming off of roles in Yorgos Lanthimos's Kinds of Kindness and the Stephanie Hsu-led series Laid, he was said to be in final talks to join the feature back in October, though nothing was made official. During a conversation with Collider's Perri Nemiroff for his next movie, By Design, at our Sundance interview studio at the Rendezvous Cinema Center, he set the record straight and confirmed his involvement.

Andie MacDowell may be benefiting from some favoritism in the industry as her daughter Margaret Qualley’s star has risen throughout the years.
In a recent spot on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the veteran actress joked she was experiencing “reverse nepotism” because of Qualley.
“She’s crushing it,” MacDowell gushed. “She’s great, so good in The Substance, and the movie is fantastic. And she takes so many chances, she’s so much braver than I could have ever been. She really carved her own road, I’m super proud of her.”
Qualley cemented her star power in Netflix’s Maid, a limited series adaptation of Stephanie Land’s best-selling memoir of the same name, which garnered her second Emmy nomination after 2019’s Fosse/Verdon. That same year she was in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood, and has since made a concerted effort to headline more niche projects,...

After the Oscars released the Academy Award nominations on the 23rd of January, many movie lovers celebrated the incredible accomplishments several films had made. Emilia Pérez earned a record-setting 13 nominations, followed by The Brutalist and Wicked, both earning ten nominations apiece. Although the reception to the news has been somewhat mixed, many fans have pointed out some of the Academy's biggest snubs.
Oscar snubs are bound to happen each year. Last year, movies like All of Us Strangers, Asteroid City, Beau Is Afraid, BlackBerry, The Iron Claw, Saltburn, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and more were all snubbed. Great Gerwig probably had the most disappointing snub after directing the groundbreaking Barbie. This year was no different, with many fans taking to social media and beyond to voice their disappointment.

Willem Dafoe is a well-known, much-celebrated actor whose credits range from the biggest blockbusters to the smallest independent films. The actor's reputation precedes him, making this video that's going viral that much more confusing. A TikTok account by the name of Hikhann_ posted a video of the user stopping Dafoe, who was walking down the street, and interviewing him, asking the actor what his name is and what he does for a living. Dafoe, ever the polite person, calmly answers the interviewer's questions before continuing to stroll down the busy public street.
The TikTok page in question is known for asking pedestrians many of the same questions that he asks Dafoe in the video that has gone viral. When Dafoe was asked what he liked about his job, the actor said that he enjoys how “It’s always different. Nothing’s ever the same.” The TikTok user then asked Dafoe...

Nobody makes movies quite like Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, and his 2024 dark comedy anthology film "Kinds of Kindness" is something like "The Twilight Zone" for perverts and sickos (in the most complimentary way). Emma Stone leads a cast of talented actors who each appear in a triptych of tales, playing different roles in each story, and the somewhat nihilistic fable is the most "Lanthimos" movie Lanthimos has ever made.
Some fans were disappointed in "Kinds of Kindness" after the Academy Award-winning psychosexual delights of Stone and Lanthimos's previous collaboration, "Poor Things," which featured a script by "The Great" creator Tony McNamara, but "Kinds of Kindness" is a fascinating piece of work nonetheless. Lanthimos co-wrote "Kinds of Kindness" with his frequent collaborator Efthymis Filippou, who also wrote the director's films "Alps," "Dogtooth," "The Lobster," and "The Killing of a Sacred Deer," and it's a return to many of his unusual trademarks.

Singer-Actresses Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez might compete for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Both Grande and Gomez have leveled up their acting careers with two notable roles this year. These two are included in our predictions for the category, alongside some of the other best performances of the year.

FandomWire’s other nominees include an Oscar winner in the category, a rising star in dramatic roles, and a Star Wars actress. Fans will also see a surprising snub in here and we have the right reason to believe that Academy voters aren’t too keen to nominate her.

There are many moments, in Coralie Fargeat's 2024 horror-satire The Substance, when Fargeat's frequently invasive camera is clearly avoiding its characters' faces on purpose. Once upon a time, you could make a movie about a mismatched couple of friends who have to solve a problem. This movie would go into theaters and become a respectable hit and sometimes create sequels. But now far too many comedies, regardless of quality, only show up on streaming services. They’re deemed not big enough for the spectacle of an auditorium screen nor are they arty enough to compete for awards. Thankfully, “One of Them Days” is headed to theaters, brave enough to be an exception and solid enough to warrant this release strategy. There’s nothing particularly unexpected in Lawrence Lamont’s buddy comedy, but when it has no issue providing laughs thanks to stars Keke Palmer and Sza and their supporting cast, you can escape to the theater and have a good time rather than laughing by yourself in front of your TV.

The Substance has received critical acclaim after its premiere. The body horror has received several nominations at big awards, and it's expected to gain some potential Academy Awards nominations. Still, the film was physically draining for one of its lead stars.
During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Margaret Qualley, who plays the younger version of Demi Moore's character, revealed the prosthetics she wore during filming heavily damaged her skin. The actress received several award nominations for Best Supporting Actress for the role, including Critics' Choice Awards and the Golden Globes. However, her involvement came with some big sacrifices.

Coralie Fargeat wants her next film to be just as 'bold and surprising' as The Substance.
Speaking about the mental challenges of tackling such a role, the actress also revealed the physical damage around the 11:50 mark.

These Bafta nominations have given us the traditional buffet of snubs for industry observers to frown at. Nothing at all for Luca Guadagnino’s tremendous drama Queer – its exuberant leading turn from Daniel Craig passed over. Nothing for the very moving Irish film Small Things Like These and so no Bafta nod for Cillian Murphy’s outstanding (arguably career-best) performance there. The appetite for Yorgos Lanthimos films starring Emma Stone seems to be maxed out. Nothing for their film Kinds of Kindness.
But one much-feared possible exclusion thankfully did not materialise: Marianne Jean-Baptiste has a best actress nomination for her superb performance in Mike Leigh’s blistering study of depression, Hard Truths, though no director nomination for Leigh himself.

Unlike last year, there isn’t a clear favorite to win the Best Actor category at the 97th Academy Awards, making it a healthy and interesting competition. There were some incredible performances that were duly appreciated in cinemas this year. When the Academy announces its list of nominees on January 17, 2025, five out of these nine actors will probably make it to the final selection.

Actress Margaret Qualley has shared that the prosthetic makeup she wore while shooting “The Substance” caused serious skin damage that took a year to heal.
In a recent “Happy Sad Confused” podcast episode, Qualley told host Josh Horowitz that her skin irritation became so severe that it changed the movie’s shooting schedule and how the cameras were used.
“They had to shoot up my skirt in the beginning credits, with palm trees all around and long lenses from the bottom, because my face was so damaged they couldn’t shoot it anymore,” Qualley said. Director Coralie Fargeat had to use clever camera settings to solve the problem.
Qualley still had skin issues during her next project, “Kinds of Kindness,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. The damage helped her play one of the four roles in the movie better than she expected.

In a recent interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Margaret Qualley said it took “a year” for her skin to recover from the irritation caused by the face prosthetics used in “The Substance.” The damage was so bad that director Coralie Fargeat had to frame out her face in certain shots.

The acne from the prosthetics lasted long after “The Substance” wrapped and persisted as she began shooting her next film, “Kinds of Kindness,” in which she played four characters: Vivian, Martha, Rebecca and Ruth. Luckily, the acne played to her benefit in the Yorgos Lanthimos drama.

There is no shortage of competitors for the Best Actor category hoping to be nominated for the Oscars 2025 and try to win. The Academy Award for the best lead male actor is one of the biggest awards each year, which is no different in 2025. Following in the footsteps of Cillian Murphy's breakthrough win for Oppenheimer in 2024, there is an entirely new crop of performers who want to win this year. They'll be among the nominees in all Oscars 2025 categories, as voters decide which five actors deserve the nominations before narrowing it down to one winner.
As the ones in front of the camera, actor awards can often get more attention than the 2025 Oscars Best Director nominations. There is usually plenty of overlap between the actors who are nominated for Best Actor and the selection of films contending for Best Picture. Since those ten movies are deemed the best of the best,...

Letterboxd, the cinephile social platform that’s become perhaps the most effective tool for independent film in a landscape where moviegoers are hard to reach, hit 17 million members in 2024.
That’s a big jump from 11.4 million at the end of 2023 and 1.8 million in 2020, according to the New Zealand-based platform’s 2024 Year In Review published today.
A new member joins Letterboxd every five seconds, it said of the hub for film fans to discover, discuss and share favorites. In 2024, those members wrote 96.4 million reviews, marked 701 million films watched, and made 6.8 million lists, a popular feature.
Perhaps most importantly, it’s a now a key driver of the indie box office with distributors frequently citing Letterboxd when opening a film theatrically. A24 gave a shout-out to the platform for the strong limited debut of Brady Corbet’s Golden Globe winning The Brutalist in December.

Gold House has unveiled its fifth annual Gold List with “Wicked” and “Moana 2” among the films being honored.
The list spotlights the most exceptional achievements in film by Asian Pacific creatives over the past year. It also serves as a guide for awards voters and celebrates a monumental year for Asian Pacific representation in cinema.
Since its launch five years ago, the Gold List has celebrated an emerging tide of increasing representation in film by honoring over 200 Asian Pacific films and creatives, with many proceeding to receive Academy Awards. Among those films are “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Minari,” “Rrr,” “Parasite,” “The Boy and the Heron” and “The Elephant Whisperer.”
In a year when Asian Pacific creativity dominated the box office —”Moana 2″ and Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” alone grossed over $1.2 billion globally — the Gold List celebrates these blockbusters alongside “All We Imagine As Light,” “Dìdi” and “Monkey Man.

Elisabeth and Sue are “one” in The Substance, so it only makes sense that both of their portrayers, Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, would receive equal treatment at the Oscars.
Moore crept into Gold Derby’s Oscar nominations predictions for Best Actress just over a week ago, and she officially fired up that race with a Golden Globe triumph on Jan. 5. She thanked Qualley in her acceptance speech “for being the other half of me that I couldn’t have done without” (watch below). Now it’s Qualley’s time to start thinking of a speech. She just leapt into our Best Supporting Actress Oscar lineup, where her 10/1 odds currently place her in fifth behind Globe winner Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) at 10/3, Ariana Grande (Wicked) at 4/1, Isabella Rossellini (Conclave) at 5/1, and Felicity Jones (The Brutalist) at 11/2.
