The 30 Best Asean Movies of 2023
Image
As we have mentioned many times the past few years, it seems that the future of Asian cinema lies somewhere among the Asean countries, with the filmmakers from the particular region having both the inspiration and the command of the medium to present new things, both in terms of stories and cinematic approach. Malaysia in particular seems to have one of its greatest years in that regard, with the huge success of “Tiger Stripes” being the tip of the iceberg. Indonesian audience seems to have returned to cinemas even more massively than before the pandemic, the Filipino film industry is also experiencing a boom in the last few years, particularly in amount of titles, while the rest of the countries in the region are following close by, mostly through approaches that combine genre with art-house filmmaking.

Without further ado, here are 30 movies that highlighted all the aforementioned in 2023, in reverse order,...

Film Review: Creepy Crawly (2023) by Chalit Krileadmongkon and Pakphum Wongjinda
Image
The use of folklore and native legends as a source for content in the horror genre stretches back decades, whether it be for minuscule scenes within the larger narrative or wholesale films based on such stories. Ranging from the likes of Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and other cryptids to simpler stuff like “When a Stranger Calls” or “Urban Legends,” it’s all fairly commonly used as a building block that serves up some intriguing content. Directors Chalit Krileadmongkon and Pakphun Wongjinda, hot on the heels of their successful creature feature “Leio: The Terrible Giant” (or the rebranded US title “The Beast Beneath”), team up again with inspiration from a Thai legend of a human-possessing centipede to deliver another stellar creature feature in “Creepy Crawly” on Digital and Blu-Ray from WellGo USA on October 3.

‘Creepy Crawly’ Review – Thai Centipede Horror Movie Is Flawed But Has a Unique Monster
Image
As the title suggests, Creepy Crawly is about a bug. Lots of them, in fact. This Thai horror movie’s original title of The 100 alluded to its predatory antagonist’s many legs, but the new name now eliminates any chance of vagueness. The renaming might also indicate a sense of fun. However, viewers will quickly realize this story of people trapped in a hotel with a giant centipede monster takes itself rather seriously. Maybe too much so.

In the world of Creepy Crawly, society is still dealing with Covid-19. The Pandemic is at its peak, and death and sickness is on everyone’s minds. Directors Chalit Krileadmongkon (The Beast Below) and Pakphum Wongjinda play on that relatable vulnerability and paranoia by introducing a blatantly metaphorical threat: the parasitic monster that passes from person to person like a communicable disease. The tension is then magnified by using a single location for most of the movie.

New US Trailer for 'Creepy Crawly' - Thailand's Gross Creature Feature
Image
"The monster can possess anybody. How do we know you're not behind all this?" Well Go USA has revealed an official US trailer for a Thai horror film called Creepy Crawly, which is the cheesy US release title for this freaky creature feature. Not the most unique name. It's originally known as The One Hundred, which may seem like a strange title, however it's a reference to the main monster in it - a 100-legged gigantic bug creature. While quarantining at a Thailand hotel, guests begin disappearing with no explanation from staff, leaving the group to wonder whether there may be some truth to local urban legends about a terrifying bug creature rumored to possess its victims. It's funny to see them mix the pandemic hotels with a horror film concept. The film stars Pirat Nitipaisalkul, Chanya McClory, Benjamin Joseph Varney, and David Asavanon. It will finally be released on VOD / Br this fall,...
