This Day That Year: Revisiting Karan Johar’s 2 States
Image
In a new installment of This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha looks back Karan Johar’s 2 States, which released in 2014.

2 States creates a world where characters don’t shout to be heard. They just belong to a world where being proper, politically or otherwise, is not always a pre-condition.

Magically, 2 States ends with a beautifully staged wedding where the film’s culture-crossed couple finally gets their wish.

Sigh of relief? Not quite. This is a film you don’t want to end. It’s a story….but wait, it doesn’t seem like a story!! Not in the sense of ‘Once upon a time when Boy Met Girl.’ You know exactly where our twosome, the gorgeous Ananya and the diffident Krish, are going… But you get so sucked into their journey, their courtship, conflicts, tiffs, and buts, that you feel after a point that you aren...

Reflections 2015: Bollywood Razzies of 2015
“It’s the most wonderful time of the year” goes the Xmas song, but it also applies to sorting through the dreck and crap that came out of Bollywood in 2015. I watched many of these duds so that you don’t have to, and trust me they’re not as hilarious as I’m going to make them, because for every great Jodi like Srk-Kajol in Dilwale there’s Sunny Leone being paired with Ram Kapoor. Yet there were some awful gems like Msg and its sequel that came out in the same year – take that annual Fast and Furious franchise! Herewith is the worst and secretly hilarious of the year.

Worst Actor – Emraan Hashmi for Hamari Adhuri Kahani/Mr X

After doing so well in Shanghai, and Ghanchakkar, Emraan decided to play it safe with his performances in Hamari Adhuri Kahani (paired opposite Vidya Balan) and the atrocious Mr X.

The real reason why Kareena Kapoor walked out of Raj Kumar Guptas film
Kareena Kapoor in Bodyguard (2011)
Much has been written about Kareena Kapoor's walk-out from Rajkumar Gupta's new film Section 84. But the real reason is yet to come out.

While sources close to the project say Kareena demanded too many changes, Kareena has another story to tell.

Says the actress, "From the very beginning I made it clear that I was not happy with several things in the script. The director promised to come back with the changes. However, I was still not convinced about the script even after he made the changes. So I thought it was better to opt out. I was patient. I gave the script several chances. But it didn't work for me."

Says the actress, "At this stage of my career I don't want to do any film that I'm not sure of."

Rajkumar Gupta on the other hand, chose not to comment. I am not surprised. It...

What left Vidya Balan heartbroken?
We all know what a fantastic actress Vidya Balan is. But for some reason or the other, her last few films like Ghanchakkar, Shaadi Ke Side Effects and Bobby Jasoos, didn't do well.

Ask Vidya if failures affect her personally and she says, "Failures are disappointing. And they do affect you when a film you've invested in so much in, doesn't work. Like I was heartbroken after Ghanchakkar. After Shaadi Ke Side Effects I had learnt to deal it better because I already had Ghanchakkar before. And by Bobby Jasoos, I had two before. I cry, get angry but with my closest people I get it out of my system so that I can move on. I make sure it's not bigger in my head than it actually is."

That's a good approach, Vidya. Moving on from something which is bothering you is always nice.

Despite being married why Vidya loves Emraan Hashmi?
This Friday's prominent release, Fox Star's Hamari Adhuri Kahani, brings back on screen the hit pair of Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan (after The Dirty Picture and Ghanchakkar), and there is a curiosity to see them together again. It also marks the comeback of sorts of class actress Vidya Balan.

Vidya has gone on records to say that she really wanted to work with veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and that she is lucky to be a part of a film which is based on the life of his parents.

Vidya was very much impressed with all the real life characters that were etched out. Says Vidya, "It is a very unconventional love story but the characters are real life. My husband (Rajkummar Rao) is very possessive and treats me as a commodity and feels that Vasudha (my character) is his whole and sole property. He forces me to tattoo his name on my hands.

Can Mohit Suri rejuvenate Emraan Hashmi's career?
Once titled 'hitman' Hashmi due to his superb success record, actor Emraan Hashmi has been searching for that elusive hit for almost three years now. To be precise, his last big hit was Raaz 3 which released in September 2012.

In fact since Raaz 3, Emraan Hashmi has had some very promising films like Shanghai, Ek Thi Daayan, Ghanchakkar, etc flopping at the ticket window. Even his Dharma Productions outing Ungli failed to cut much ice, and the case was similar with his home banner venture (Vishesh Films), Mr X which despite the much touted SFX tanked. In all the cases, the hit music which was always associated with Emraan Hashmi films (and which earned him our title, music's lucky mascot) was clearly missing.

To cut a long story short, all eyes and hopes now rest on the golden boy Mohit Suri (Emraan's friend and cousin) to rejuvenate Emraan Hashmi's career and...

“Hamari Adhuri Kahaani is a landmark film in my life,” says Emraan Hashmi
Bollywood heartthrob Emraan Hashmi has said that he is very much looking forward to his next big release Hamari Adhuri Kahaani, opposite co-star Vidya Balan. Directed by Aashiqui 2 and Ek Villain’s Mohit Suri, the film is based on an intense romantic tale between Hashmi and Balan, with Rajkumar Rao in a supporting role.

Speaking to Pti, Emraan said how he is relieved that he decided to take on the film, which he had initially rejected. “Bhatt sahab forced and dragged me into this film when I said no the first time. He knew what was good for me. I didn’t probably give the narration a good listen the first time around or he gave me a bad narration, we don’t know. But I realised this is one of the landmark films in my life.”

Emraan has also said that working on Hamari Adhuri Kahaani has made...

Emraan Hashmis Hollywood film based on Pakistani whistle-blower
Emraan Hashmi in Tigers (2014)
Though it is time for Emraan Hashmi to get ready for his next release Raja Natwarlal, the actor has two other releases which were supposed to hit the silver screen this year. One is the much awaited Karan Johar venture Ungli which also stars Kangna Ranaut and Sanjay Dutt and the other is Emraan's Hollywood venture White Lies. While his former co-star Bipasha Basu too is awaiting her Hollywood release, Emraan Hashmi too joined hands with Danis Tanovic for White Lies. Now, Emraan revealed that they will be showcasing it on different Film festivals soon. Along with that, he also stated that the film is based on the real life story of a Pakistani whistle-blower and his fight against the corrupt system. Normally, films based on real life incidents often have setbacks but denying any such issues, Emraan maintained that it is a documented thing and they are not trying to malign anyone's image.

Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan, and Rajkummar Rao in Hamari Adhuri Kahani (2015)
Vidya now gears up for her Emraan starrer Hamari Adhuri Kahaani
Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan, and Rajkummar Rao in Hamari Adhuri Kahani (2015)
Bobby Jasoos has released and it is time for Vidya Balan to move on to her next. While on a personal front, she has gained good appreciation and acknowledgment for her Bobby act, Vidya is now stepping into a romantic zone after a hiatus with Hamari Adhuri Kahaani which is all set to go on floor. For Vidya, it is a different territory altogether as the last film with a strong romantic element was Ishqiya (2010) and that too had its own share of deceit, intrigue and suspense element to it. Ever since then she has experimented with the likes of No One Killed Jessica, The Dirty Picture, Kahaani, Ghanchakkar, Shaadi Ke Side Effects and Bobby Jasoos where she has basically played on her versatility. With Hamari Adhuri Kahaani, she gets into a romantic space after a hiatus. "Well yes, this is indeed an intense love story and as the title itself conveys,...

Reflections 2013: Top 10 Disappointments of 2013
2013 has had some fantastic films from the passionate Ram-Leela to the dramatic Kai Po Che. There have of course been some majorly disappointing films. These either had fantastic trailers which showed promised of exciting cinema, or boasted star casts that would surely choose only the best of scripts. Take a look at the over-hyped films that brought nothing but heart-breaking sadness to the filmi buffs globally.

10. Bullet Raja

We were expecting a little bit of action, a little bit of comedy and little bit of romance. Tigmanshu Dhulia, director of the fantastic Paan Singh Tomar, sadly lets us down with this directorial venture. The dialogues are disappointing, the music is forgettable and draws the film out unnecessarily and the story is quite unbelievable. Sorry Saif, better luck next time.

9. Race 2

Race 1 was a stylish movie with fast-paced action and beautiful international locations. Race 2 maintains the style, some nice locations,...

Reflections 2013: Top 10 Albums of the Year
2013 has been a stellar year for soundtracks, with constant innovation and the odd chartbuster that eventually tops your most played list on your iPod. There was a lot of fabulous collaborations like Vishal Bharadwaj and South-African band Umoja for Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola or the full on Southie beats for Chennai Express. There was a lot of regional flavour and experimentation with music directors like A.R. Rahman and Amit Trivedi looking to the sounds of Banaras and Gujarat for their fantastic albums. Whoever says there’s a dearth of good soundtracks, then look no further than our list of top albums of the year!

10. Kai Po Che

Amit Trivedi appears twice on our list, because he proved that quality trumps quality with his three-song album that perfectly conjured up that Gujurati flavour with his consistently inventive stamp. Who could have thought that bagpipes would go seamlessly well with shehnaii...

Emraan Hashmi back to where he belongs
What's the common factor in Emraan Hashmi's last few films? Well, none of these boasted of trademark 'Emraan Hashmi' kind of songs. Whether it is Ghanchakkar, Ek Thi Daayan, Rush or Shanghai, each of these had the kind of music that was miles away from the kind that goes with Emraan's territory. All of that is going to change now with Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahi remake, work on which has already begun. For starters, the film would be an out and out musical and would boast of as m...

Vidya Praises Farhan
Vidya Balan is often the receiver of praise but the Ghanchakkar actress was full of praise for actor-director Farhan Akhtar. Although the two are paired with each other in the movie ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’, it was Akhtar’s performance in the newly released ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ that got Vidya talking.

While at a lauch event for artist Sohini Mukhopadhyay’s new album, Vidya told reporters , “I have just seen the movie and he has done a fabulous job as Milkha Singh.”

The film is directed by Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra and also stars Sonam Kapoor, who is still enjoying the success of her last release ‘Raanjhanaa’. Special Report: From the Iifa Awards Green Carpet!
The green carpet became a runway for the sexiest stars in Bollywood to strut their stuff into the 14th annual Iifa (International Indian Film) awards ceremony.

Headed by the badshah of Bollywood, “King Khan”, the procession of fashionistas attracted a rambunctious crowd.

Shah Rukh Khan looked dashing as ever, wearing a crisp black suit and a smile that made every female in the vicinity weak at the knees – including Mani’s mum!

Heads turned as Mr. Khan walked down the carpet, not just on account of his slick sense of style, but also because of the smart black leather sling wrapped around his right arm. Only the King of Bollywood could turn an injury into a fashion statement! Insert Picture 1 – Shahrukh Khan

What he didn’t quite manage to pull off however, was the unkempt beard and long hair, which made him resemble an extra from Pirates of the Caribbean.

Ghanchakkar may touch 40 crore mark
It was mentioned in this column last week that for Ghanchakkar to eventually come up trumps, a lot would depend on the weekday collections. Well, as it happened, the film didn’t quite cover much distance after a decent weekend and collected around 10 crores more. The film did stay stable but that was on the lower end that resulted in the first week billing of 32 crores.

Though these are decent collections for the film, much better was expected given the credentials involved. Still, if one compares these with some other films that Emraan Hashmi had done in the recent past which were not in his ‘zone’, case in point being Ek Thi Daayan and Shanghai, the film has fared better. However, one did look forward to more appreciation coming in for the film along with box office moolah, something that was not the case as it had to settle down with an ‘Average’ tag.

Shagufta Rafique
Will Emraan have dates for Shagufta Rafiques Rose
Shagufta Rafique
Writer-turned-debutant director Shagufta Rafique has ambitious plans for her film (titled Rose), which is based on the theme of a raped housewife. While she hunts for the young woman who plays the part, she may also have to search for the man who would be playing the male lead.

Reason being the ultra hectic schedule of Emraan Hashmi, her first choice.

"If Shagufta plans to begin her film this year, it is virtually impossible to rope in Emraan," says an insider, "He just doesn't have dates. Now that Ghanchakkar is out, he would step into the promotion of Ungli. Then there is Badtameez Dil with Kareena Kapoor, for which he begins shooting soon. In between there is also his international flick White Lies which would be readied for release."

Add to that Invisible with Bhatts, that he begins early next year as well as a film with Kunal Deshmukh and...

Ghanchakkar survives average reviews, finds multiplex audience
Last week’s prediction of Ghanchakkar came true on two counts. First and foremost, it opened much better in multiplexes when compared to single screens. Secondly, the average footfalls for this widely released film were in 40%-50% range. However, it was also predicted that the film would see some good rise in collections over the weekend. Well, as it happened, this didn’t quite turn out to be the case as the film managed to stay on just about stable and couldn’t really see much escalation. As a result, the weekend collections were around 22 crores which, if not excellent, are decent for sure.

In fact if one looks at the kind of average to above average reviews that the film managed to get at large, and had a similar response from audience as well, this Rajkumar Gupta directed film still managed to have its head above water for a major part of the weekend.

“Gupta’s third film is wacky whimsical dark scrumptious and wonderfully innovative” – Subhash K Jha reviews Ghanchakkar
Starring Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan, Rajesh Verma, Namit Das

Directed by Rajkumar Gupta

He is a lazy lazy lad. And she is one helluva crazy Punjaban whose kookie cooking drives her sullen husband up the nearest wall. Disgust on the dining-table camouflaged in tons of table-salt, Sanju(Emraan Hashmi, pitch-perfect in his spousal indolence) would probably have gone on tolerating his wife’s appalling culinary skills matched only by her hideous fashion sense, if only he didn’t decide to pull off one last heist that would make him and his inept cook of a wife rich for the rest of their life.

Take-home food, here we come!

Oh, I forgot to tell you …. Hashmi plays an expert lock-picker, the kind of safe-bet who can crack safes faster than we can say ‘Saif Ali Khan’.Forgetfulness comes easily in this crazily unpredictable dark comedy about an ordinary Delhi couple’s...

Ghanchakkar Movie Review
Ghanchakkar had so much going for it. The oddly interesting pair of Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi. A genuinely hatke plot. A lot of potential for a pacy thriller with comic elements. And yet, it ends up as flat as cola without the fizz.

Sanjay (Emraan) is a professional safecracker who wants to give up his ways and settle down in life with his over the top, fashionably challenged wife Neetu (Vidya). However, when he is offered a too-good-to-refuse deal by the goon duo Pandit (Rajesh Sharma) and Agreece (Namit Das), he decides to take it up as his last job. The robbery is successful and Sanjay is entrusted with the loot for three months till matters cool down. Unfortunately, Sanjay meets with an accident and forgets where he hid the loot. Then his co-conspirators come calling for their share.

Ghanchakkar starts off very well. The characters and their quirks are established quickly.

Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Week 4: We Are Family!
Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa season 6 is now four weeks old! The challenge of the week was family, and the participants made sure they blended the beautiful emotions and relations that they share with their family in a way that the judges feel their performances from within.

The performances commenced with the all-time rockstars Lauren and Punit, who gave an enthralling contemporary performance based on Lauren’s bond with her father. As flawless as ever, their act was soothing and full of feelings, and the duo scored 30 on 30. To take this series of emotionally beautiful performances further, Siddharth and Sonia came up to describe what Siddharth’s mom means to him through a freestyle and hip-hop combined act. Siddharth’s hip-hop was not as clean as it should have come out, but nonetheless it was something that suited him, as the judges also said. This couple scored 24 on 30. Next up were Shaan...

Vidya Balan thrives on being unconventional
If there is one actress in the recent times who is not at all bothered about appearing in a glamorous way in a film, with designer couture, without oodles of makeup, it is Vidya Balan, who has really redefined the notions of beauty as they conventionally are associated for a Hindi film heroine, and she affirms it again with her latest film Ghanchakkar. She has again been portrayed in a wacky sense as far as her attire is concerned, and one could argue that it is in sync with the...

Box Office: Emraan & Vidya ‘jodi’ to ensure good footfalls for ‘Ghanchakkar’
With ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, ‘Fukrey’ and ‘Raanjhanaa’ doing well, industry is in a buoyant mood. This should be further aided by the arrival of ‘Ghanchakkar’ which is carrying positive vibes. Talkie promos of the film have managed to garner some very good response. These should also ensure that at multiplexes, the film opens well and consolidates its position by close of Friday itself.

In fact this is also one of those rare Emraan Hashmi films which is expected to open better at multiplexes than single screens. Now that’s quite a shift from the days of ‘Aashiq Banaya Aapne’ and ‘Aksar’, the non-Bhatt films, which were some of his early successes. Of course one could have foreseen an even better start in the interiors and the single screens as well had the songs being set in a quintessential ‘Emraan Hashmi mode’. However since director Rajkumar Gupta has established an...
