Directed by Joe Berlinger, the Netflix docuseries 28 Days Haunted is based on the theories of Ed and Lorraine Warren.

This sub-genre of reality television draws in all sorts of fans, from hardcore horror buffs to casual enjoyers of paranormal happenings. What makes the sub-genre stand out, though, is the extreme passion people have for uncovering the truth. Anything that investigates what may or may not be real is bound to draw the attention of even the most hardcore skeptics.

Dozens of television shows and movies explore this subject. This creates a wide range from traditional-style ghost-hunting shows, like the classic Ghost Hunters, to documentary-style recounts of actual paranormal events, like A Haunting and 28 Days Haunted. Not all paranormal investigation shows are equal, but some stand above the rest.

In a recent installment I spoke with TV Host Aaron Sagers about the Netflix series 28 Days Haunted, which follows three paranormal teams who each spend 28 days in a haunted location. Netflix's 28 Days Haunted puts a theory by paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren to the test to communicate with spirits. Though the series has yet to be renewed for season 2, hosts Aaron Sagers and Tony Spera end the series, stating their desire to investigate new locations to prove the Warren's theory and capture proof of the paranormal.

However, between the questionable evidence and convenient camera angles of season 1, Redditors simply cannot take the show seriously. During investigations at the Lumbar Baron Inn, Captain Grant's Inn, and Madison Dry Goods, small details have garnered hilarious reactions from viewers.

Phones In Isolation

At the beginning of the series, the investigators are blindfolded and hand over their cell phones as they are meant to be completely isolated from the outside world. A voiceover claims they have no access to the outside world, with their computers not being connected to the internet.

28 Days Haunted is Netflix's latest venture into the world of paranormal investigation, with three teams visiting the previously researched sites by famed paranormal investigation legends Lorraine and Ed Warren, who would go on to inspire The Conjuring film franchise.

Like other ghost-hunting shows, the teams have to stay in their haunted location, but instead of spending one night, they have to spend a full 28 days in their spot. The show's cast will be tested to their mental limits as they experience unexplainable sounds, feelings of dread, and things moving without any prompting. The series began streaming on October 21.

Ryan Murphy has been dethroned. Tembi and Attica Locke’s limited series From Scratch has taken over from The Watcher as the most-viewed series on Netflix last week.

The drama series, starring Zoe Saldaña, about an artist who finds romance with a chef in Italy notched 72.02M hours watched in its second week on the streamer. It managed to chart in the Netflix Top 10 in 84 countries.

In its third week since release, The Watcher was bumped to the No. 2 spot from October 24-30, with another 67.51M hours viewed — which is less than half the viewership it drew last week. In total, the series has managed more than 340M hours viewed.

Murphy’s serial killer series Dahmer is also still putting up some impressive numbers in its last week on the Netflix Top 10 with 40.96M hours viewed (No. 5 on the list). The series has now amassed more than 865 million hours viewed...

The Zoe Saldaña-led limited series “From Scratch” was Netflix’s top title between Oct. 24 and Oct. 30, bringing in 72 million hours viewed.

This viewing period marks the romance’s first full week of availability on Netflix; last week, it debuted at No. 3 with 32.2 million hours viewed after three days on the streamer. “From Scratch” is based on the memoir of the same name by Tembi Locke, who co-created the series with her sister, showrunner Attica Locke.

“From Scratch” is the first project to outrank Ryan Murphy’s recent output at Netflix. Between Jeffrey Dahmer drama “Monster” and his limited series “The Watcher,” Murphy spent five weeks at the top of the chart. During the Oct. 24-30 window, “The Watcher” dropped to second place on the English-language TV chart with 67.5 million hours viewed — still an impressive showing for its second full week on Netflix. “Monster,” in its fifth full week, took fifth place with 41 million hours.

The epic tale, which stars Kerry Washington, Charlize Theron, Laurence Fishburne, Michelle Yeoh and up-and-comers Sophia Anne Caruso and Sofia Wylie, landed on Netflix Oct 19 and enchanted viewers across the globe, landing in the Top 10 in 93 countries.

Behind “The School for Good and Evil” sits “The Curse of Bridge Hollow,” starring “Stranger Things” breakout Priah Ferguson, with 25.34M hours viewed. Mystery-thriller “Luckiest Girl Alive” — adapted from Jessica Knoll’s best-selling novel and starring Mila Kunis, came in third with 19.3M hours viewed. Inspired by real-life events, “The Stranger” had 17.04 million hours viewed. The true-crime drama is a gripping tale that chronicles one of the most notorious crimes in Australian history.

Ryan Murphy continues to lead the competition for the fifth week in a row.

After toppling “Monster,” the Evan Peters-led limited series on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, to the No. 2 spot, Murphy’s “The Watcher” sits at No.1 on the Netflix top 10 chart for the second consecutive week. During the Oct. 17-23 viewing window, the series garnered 148.2 million hours viewed in its first full week of availability. Co-created with Ian Brennan and adapted from a true story originally told in a 2018 New York magazine story, Naomi Watts and Bobby Canavale star in the mystery thriller as a married couple on the hunt to find the identity of their haunting stalker.

In its fourth full week of streaming, “Monster” racked up 69.1 million hours viewed, furthering its solidified stance as second most-watched English-language series Netflix has ever had behind “Stranger Things” Season 4. The limited series crossed the milestone after hitting 701.4 million hours viewed earlier this month.

As Halloween creeps around the corner, Netflix has timed its new paranormal investigation reality TV show 28 Days Haunted for an October 19th, 2022 release. The show entails three groups of daring ghost hunters who agree to stay inside some of the most haunted houses on record, with the theoretical work of famed paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren informing which sinister location to explore.
