With Justice League having finally arrived in cinemas, it’s only understandable that the folks at DC Entertainment experience team-up fever. Sure, they may publish an ongoing comic of the same title featuring that very squad of superheroes, but that doesn’t mean they can’t pare it down in other books by more intimately exploring the relationships between certain characters.
A few weeks back, we heard a rumor that the Dark Knight and Amazon Warrior would be co-headlining a new six-issue series soon enough, which has now been confirmed to be Brave and the Bold: Batman and Wonder Woman. As you may recall, the “Brave and the Bold” brand carries some considerable weight. Not only is it a decades old comic book series known for its typical and atypical team-ups, but it was also the name of a fantastic animated series in which the Caped Crusader would join forces...

When it came time to build a third standalone “Thor” feature, Marvel brass had a few different elements that they felt were necessary for inclusion, all the better to bolster the superhero’s solo power after the relative disappointment of “Thor: The Dark World.” Mostly, there needed to be more humor, the kind that could capitalize on star Chris Hemsworth’s growing acclaim as a comedian, but not feel out of place in the McU as a whole. And perhaps the big guy needed a buddy, too, a fellow superhero also capable of teasing out both humor and pathos.
As Marvel president Kevin Feige explains, the franchise found an unlikely connection between those aims and a favorite piece of comic book lore. First up, though, “Thor: Ragnarok” needed to be its own thing, and get away from a predecessor that didn’t quite tap into what makes the Asgardian god...

Picking the best songs from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” is like going to an all-you-can-eat buffet catered by a Michelin-star chef. Maybe some picks aren’t going to line up for your appetite, others might be too close to what you usually enjoy, and the best choices make you realize the things you never knew you liked before.
So as the series gears up for a third season in the greater reaches of West Covina, we thought it was time not to rank every song worst to best, but to pick out the musical apex for each character on the show. The bold, the silly, the poignant, all wrapped up in the best that each “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” character has to offer.

John Lithgow twice got close to the role of The Joker in Batman in the 1980s. Both times? It didn't quite work out...
Back when Tim Burton was making the first modern Batman movie, that would eventually be released in the summer of 1989, he would eventually cast Jack Nicholson in the role of The Joker. However, Nicholson was one of several actors considered for the role, and in a new chat, John Lithgow has been talking about when he too was considered for the part.
Initially, when Joe Dante was set to make Batman in the mid-1980s, Lithgow was said to be the top choice to play The Joker at that stage. But as he told Vulture, “I was doing M Butterfly on Broadway and it was an exhausting show. It would have meant leaving that show and going right into a movie, and I said...

It’s telling that the first feature-length film to come out of Italy was Dante’s Inferno (1911). Because of course, what else would it be? A silent, 68-minute adaptation of the classic poem that, quite memorably, features Satan munching on the souls of the damned. I suppose you could consider this film a tone-setter for the sort of genre films that would come out in Italy over the next hundred-plus years. The film is violent, demonic, and packed with full-frontal nudity. But most importantly, it was all about Hell.
Now, I know it should go without saying, but Italy is pretty big on that whole Catholicism deal. According to a survey conducted in 2005–2006, 87.8% of Italian citizens considered themselves to be Catholic. It should be no surprise, then, that while religious horror is prevalent in the United States, nobody can quite deliver a satanic panic like the Italians. And in the...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the scariest moment or scene on TV?
Ben Travers (@BenTTravers), IndieWire
Though there are moments within “Penny Dreadful” (the seance) and “The X-Files” (“Home”) that left me spooked, the title for scariest TV scene has to go to the only show to give me nightmares — actual, legitimate nightmares. After watching the first two episodes of “Hannibal,” I woke up in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat and haunted by a bright red room with blood running down the walls — twice! Two weeks in a row, “Hannibal” ruined my peaceful slumber, and I had to stop watching the show live (and during the night entirely). Each week,...

Although Justice League vs. Suicide Squad is well underway, that doesn’t mean it’s too soon for DC to start teasing their next major crossover event. Furthermore, it doesn’t come as any surprise that the publisher realizes who’s their most bankable superhero, just as WB’s motion picture division does: Batman. And it’s likely due to that fact that he’ll find himself at the epicenter of whatever this grand tale may be.
Scott Snyder, who’s recently been devoting a fair amount of his time to All-Star Batman, will be re-teamed with his longtime collaborator in artist Greg Capullo, which will no doubt make many devoted readers raise their arms in jubilation. What makes this event even more noteworthy is the knowledge that Snyder spent considerable time breaking the story with Geoff Johns, chief creative officer at DC Entertainment and the mind behind countless definitive...

In 1994, Todd McFarlane teamed up with Frank Miller to create a crossover comic featuring Spawn and Batman. Miller wrote it, and McFarlane created the art. It was a pretty big deal, and the comic turned out to be pretty badass. In case you missed that, here's a story summary:
Batman comes to New York City in his search for an arsenal of high-tech weapons and robots that use decapitated human heads as their brains. Antagonistic, confrontational and suspicious of each other, Spawn and Batman engage in violent battles before realizing they are both after the same villain. Grudgingly, they decide to work together. The person they seek has been kidnapping and decapitating the homeless for use in the robots, but that’s only part of the plan: There is also a nuclear arsenal ready to be deployed.
There was a follow-up comic planned a few years later, but unfortunately it never happened.

While much of the industry views the film festival circuit as starting with Sundance, genre fans see it differently. Annual showcases for the latest horror movie achievements include Tiff’s Midnight Madness, Austin’s Fantastic Fest, and the Sitges Film Festival. Next year, you can add the Overlook Film Festival to that list.
The new horror festival, which begins April 27, will take place Oregon’s Timberline Lodge — the eerie building that provided the exteriors for the haunted Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining.” Guests of the festival will stay in and around the hotel for four days while taking in programming featuring numerous highlights of contemporary horror in addition to classic titles. Programming will include “an immersive game” from the experiential gaming company Bottleneck Immersive and a live performance of the serialized radio play “Tales From Beyond the Pale,” produced by indie horror maestro Larry Fessenden. James + Semaj is a column where James Franco talks to his reverse self, Semaj, about new films. Rather than a conventional review, it is place where James and Semaj can muse about ideas that the films provoke. James loves going to the movies and talking about them. But a one-sided take on a movie, in print, might be misconstrued as a review. As someone in the industry it could be detrimental to James’s career if he were to review his peers, because unlike the book industry—where writers review other writer’s books—the film industry is highly collaborative, and a bad review of a peer could create problems. So, assume that James (and Semaj) love all these films. What they’re interested in talking about is all the ways the films inspire them, and make them think. James is me, and Semaj is the other side of me.

It's one thing to set a TV series in the 1980s; it's a whole other thing, however, to make it feel like it was actually shot during the Reagan-and-Rubik's-Cube era. Matt and Ross Duffer's new Netflix series Stranger Things is full of nostalgic nods to the decade and its pop-cultural products, but it's also uncommonly rigorous about getting the details just right — whether it's the many pitch-perfect music cues, the hat-tipping nods and homages to Eighties movies, or simply nailing the cringeworthy fashion statements of the day (those Mom jeans!

Robert Picardo will also be joining Dante in a Q&A following the film. I spoke with Mr. Dante on the phone earlier this week. Check it out below!
First off, I have to say that I covered the Mammoth Lakes Film Festival for their first year last year, and I was very excited to see that you were on the list this year.
Joe Dante: What is it like? What should I expect?
Oh, it’s beautiful. The mountains are incredible, the people are beyond friendly, and the programming is amazing. I’m curious , how...

We chat to Skulduggery Pleasant author about the movie adaptation, new trilogy Demon Road, horror influences, Feminism and Doctor Who…
Derek Landy is excited. Next week, he's going to see two of his favourite 80s films on the big screen for the first time. His publisher Harper Collins is hosting screenings of Joe Dante's Gremlins and Wes Craven's A Nightmare On Elm Street at London's Picturehouse Central (win tickets to both, here) for Landy's legion fans as part of the publicity circuit for book two of his Demon Road trilogy, Desolation.
Landy made his name in Young Adult fantasy with the nine-book Skulduggery Pleasant series about a skeleton detective and his teenage girl accomplice. The huge success of the first Skulduggery novel was a tornado that lifted him Dorothy-like straight out of his family's farm in Ireland and plonked him down in Hollywood where he...

Hollywood always seems to be looking for the next big lucrative film franchise. Studios have looked at several existing properties in hopes of finding their big meal ticket, and some of those properties include classic action figure toy lines and cartoon series from the 1980s. We’ve already seen films for G.I. Joe, Transformers, He-Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and a few others, but there are a helluva lot more out there that would make for some great movies!
I’ve put together a list of several different action figure and cartoon properties that I would love to see adapted for the big screen. Most of the properties on this list are ones I loved as a kid, and it would be so cool to see them brought to life in a way we've never seen before. I briefly talk about each franchise on the list and give a...

In his weekly New York Time column last week, the New York Times’ wine expert Eric Asimov wrote about how to pick a wine store. He stressed that if a person cared about wine and wanted to drink better and more confidently, the best thing one can do is to find a good wine store and then cultivate a good relationship with the staff.
There’s an enormous amount of choices for wine and good stores help consumers select and choose more wisely. They might do this with the way they arrange the wines, or with a friendly and knowledgeable staff or even through handwritten recommendations placed near the wine.
As I reach this wine column, I was drawing the inevitable parallels between wine stores and comics shops. Geek culture also offers such a diverse tapestry of choices. It can be difficult for fans and consumers to navigate through it...

WWE held four weeks worth of television tapings on Friday evening at the Cfe Arena in Orlando, Florida. With the third biggest WWE PPV event of the year (Royal Rumble) in town on Sunday evening at the Amway Center, WWE looked to capitalize on the hype by taking their red-hot developmental brand down the road from Full Sail University to an arena that holds just under 10,000 people. This was by far the biggest event Nxt has ever held in the state of Florida.
Nxt held television tapings two weeks ago at Full Sail, so they already have several weeks of TV ready to go. Friday evening’s tapings at Cfe Arena are set to air in February in early March.
Here are the full results:

Let’s hope you’ve recovered from your turkey-induced tryptophan coma, because this week’s Quantico requires all of your wits (and a stuffing-sized serving of suspension of disbelief) to keep abreast of what goes down.
Alex is tortured without having one hair on her pretty head touched. Shelby and Caleb are publicly a couple (can you guess in which timeline?). Liam spends a lot of time at the bottom of a bottle. Charlie is still missing. And Simon has a burger with someone who knows way too much about serial killers.
And that’s only about a quarter of the insanity.

Sorry to miss you guys last week! I met this old boyfriend of mine from middle school and moved to Wichita Falls after seeing a very spiritual diarrhea-medication coupon ... but anyway, I’m back now, and I’m so glad because as far as I’m concerned, “Josh and I Are Good People!” is a five-star episode! Maybe the absence has made my heart grow a little fonder, but the responsibility for tonight’s exemplary episode falls squarely on the shoulders of Dark Greg. All hail Dark Greg! Rebecca and Josh might be giggling and reminiscing about their camp days at the boba tea hut in the park (sure, why not?), but Dark Greg is there, waiting. He lashes out at both Josh and Rebecca, accusing them of being terrible people. Josh, for hanging out with Rebecca against Valencia’s wishes. Rebecca, for that thing where she ditched Greg on...

Today is Vincent Price’s 104th Birthday! Price was born here in St. Louis on this date in 1911 and is the most iconic movie star to hail from our city. Price, who died October 25th 1993, was also a gourmand, author, stage actor, speaker, world-class art collector, raconteur, and all-around Renaissance man. Vincent Price was simply one of the most remarkable people of the 20th Century. Four years ago we had the opportunity to celebrate his 100th birthday and St. Louis was the place to do it. I teamed up with Cinema St. Louis to present Vincentennial, The Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration, an event that lasted through much of the Spring of 2011. The following year Vincentennial won two coveted Rondo Awards, one for “Best Fan Event” and a second for myself as “Monster Kid of the Year” for directing the event. Giant alien creatures spread to the Middle East in the sequel Monsters: Dark Continent. Here's Ryan's review...
Giant bioluminescent space creatures dominated the horizon but not the plot in Gareth Edwards’ breakthrough film, Monsters. Shot run-and-gun style by Edwards and a tiny crew, Monsters was an unusual blend of road-trip drama with light touches of sci-fi; its focus was the growing friendship between a photograph journalist (Scoot McNairy) and his boss's daughter (Whitney Able) travelling across a Central America ravaged not so much by the title’s Lovecraftian kaiju but by a military intent on keeping them well away from American soil.
Monsters’ success saw Edwards move to Hollywood, where he’s so far headlined the daddy of all kaiju movies, Godzilla, and now set to head up another pop culture giant - the Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One. This left production company Vertigo with a potential franchise on its hands,...

When you cover filmmaking and write about the business and the art of it, there are many times you find yourself criticizing a studio for choices that are being made, and sometimes, it starts to look like you're beating up on a particular studio or playing favorites. The truth is much less interesting, though. The truth is that I react to each project, each film, each announcement, as its own thing. I can't count the number of times I've disliked a film's marketing only to end up loving the movie itself, or vice versa, and it's taught me that each movie exists separate from the conversation around it. So with that in mind, I am not trying to beat up on Warner Bros. I think ambition is a great thing. Without ambition, there is no greatness. Mainstream filmmaking is a difficult balancing act between fiscal responsibility and artistic intent, and...
