'Carrie': Mike Flanagan Heaps Praise on Summer Howell as Iconic Horror Character in the Prime Video Reboot
Image
The Stephen King horror classic of 1974, Carrie, is set to receive another reboot. This time, the chosen format is a TV series, and the visionary in charge of bringing it to life is Mike Flanagan, the director who has previously adapted the author's works Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game. Little is known about the upcoming Prime Video series, but Flanagan recently revealed why everyone should be excited about the new take on the horror classic.

Naturally, one of the key components of the series is the casting–especially that of Carrie White. Summer Howell, known for her roles in the TV series Channel Zero and films like Cult of Chucky and Hunter Hunter, has now been chosen to portray the shy-yet-powerful teenager. And while Flanagan says she wasn't an easy find, he also says that she's the reason why fans should be excited for the show.

Flanagan is currently promoting his latest film,...

This Heartbreaking Horror Movie Is One of Mike Flanagan’s Personal Favorites
Image
I love a cinematic diamond in the rough. It’s such a rush to discover a well-made film that hasn’t found the audience it deserves. When I do unearth a filmic treasure, I usually make haste to share my discovery via my Dread Central column, The Overlooked Motel. As it turns out, Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan seems just as fond of an under-seen indie horror effort as I am. He curates a Letterboxd list of his favorite horror movies, and many of his picks are smaller titles that deserve a larger fanbase.

Speaking of that Letterboxd list, I recently noticed that Flanagan added an indie horror effort from 2020 to the lineup. I’m talking about the Devon Sawa-fronted wilderness horror Hunter Hunter. Nice work, Mike. That flick really made an impression on me. I actually need to pay it a repeat visit sometime soon.

I included Hunter Hunter...

Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ Brings Fresh Blood to Prime Video
Image
Stephen King’s classic tale of telekinetic terror is making a comeback, and this time it’s landing on Prime Video. The streaming service has given the green light to an eight-episode series adapting ‘Carrie,’ with horror maestro Mike Flanagan at the helm. He’s no stranger to King’s world, having already tackled projects like ‘Gerald’s Game’ and ‘Doctor Sleep.’ Now, he’s diving into the story of a shy high schooler with a knack for moving things with her mind—and a prom night no one will forget.

Flanagan’s take promises a modern twist on the 1974 novel that put King on the map. The story follows Carrie White, a girl raised in isolation by her overbearing, religious mother. After losing her father, she’s thrown into the chaos of high school, where bullying and strange powers start to bubble up.

It’s a setup that’s been...

Today's a Bloody Good Day for Stephen King Fans
Image
A new generation of Stephen King fans are about to experience Carrie. Prime Video has officially greenlit a new adaptation of the author's acclaimed horror novel.

Per Deadline, the streamer greenlighting Carrie shouldn't be seen as too surprising considering that casting has already begun for the series. Earlier this week, it was reported that relative newcomer Summer H. Howell was close to signing a deal to star in the series as its title character, Carrie White. While Howell's acting credits are sparse, she has appeared in several horror films, notably 2013's Cult of Chucky and 2020's Hunter Hunter. Deadline also reports that Siena Agudong is also being eyed to play Carrie's nemesis, Sue Snell. Agudong is best known for playing a young Mia Toretto in F9 (2021) and for her main roles in Netflix's live-action Resident Evil series and the Kevin Smith film The 4:30 Movie.

Mike Flanagan's Carrie series eyes Chucky star for lead role
Image
Mike Flanagan has his hands full with Stephen King adaptations between his upcoming movie The Life of Chuck and the two he has in development: Carrie and The Dark Tower. We don't have much new info about The Dark Tower yet, but a new exclusive from Variety suggests casting has found its Carrie White in Child's Play star Summer H. Howell.

The outlet says a deal is close to being finalized, though none of the people directly involved have responded to requests for comment.

Flanagan's take on Carrie has been in development since October 2024. Amazon hasn't formally ordered the show into a series, but if Howell is cast, then an official pickup is likely to follow. The series is based on King's iconic 1974 novel, most famously adapted for the Oscar-nominated 1976 movie starring Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.

Howell is a 20-year-old actress who has already appeared in several genre films and horror projects,...

Flanagan is slated to develop King's 1974 novel into a miniseries for Amazon. News of Flanagan's Carrie adaptation circulated in October, and now, according to a report from Variety, it appears a lead actress may have been found. Summer H. Devon Sawa Starrer, 'All The Lost Ones' Gets Theatrical Release
Image
The latest dystopian thriller starring horror icon Devon Sawa is set to release in theaters before going to digital platforms. Mackenzie Donaldson's All the Lost Ones was set to go straight to digital services at first, but Epic Pictures has picked it up for a small theatrical window. The film will now receive a limited release in theaters on April 18, 2025, and four days later — on April 22 — it will be available for digital purchase or rent. This is great news for the relatively small film and also for the film industry at large, as independent features rarely receive theatrical windows — especially in times when streaming has taken such a big role in terms of releasing lesser-known films.

All the Lost Ones had its premiere at the 2024 Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival. Its synopsis describes the film thusly: "In a dystopian and climate-ravaged future America torn apart by civil war, Nia,...

Final Destination Star Devon Sawa Teases a Little Giants Reunion

Devon Sawa, the teenage heartthrob known for his roles in '90s horror gems like Idle Hands and Final Destination, has shared that most of his co-stars in the family sports comedy Little Giants want a reunion. ‘Consumed’ Review – Camping Horror Movie Starring Devon Sawa Follows a Familiar Path
Image
Watching horror movies about camping seems as much a beloved pastime as actual camping. The concept of campers being terrorized by someone or something in the great outdoors has timeless appeal. And Consumed, directed by Mitchell Altieri and written by David Calbert, boasts all the expected characteristics: a foreboding forest setting, unnatural forces hiding within nature, and people tapping into their primal instincts so they can survive. That’s all good and fine if standards for these kinds of movies are low to begin with, but for anyone hoping for a story that goes off the well-beaten path, then they might be better off looking elsewhere for their fill of camping horror.

Consumed immediately starts to feel familiar as the movie introduces its two main characters: city folks Beth (Courtney Halverson) and husband Jay (Mark Famiglietti) came out to the woods for some peace and quiet, only to then end...

Why Claymore Is A Lost Classic
Image
Anime history is full of excellent fantasy series, from gritty sagas like Berserk to exciting magic-laden isekai adventures like Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. Due to the genre's immense depth, many great fantasy shows have slipped through the cracks, being overshadowed by titles with more advertising or pre-release hype. One example of this is Claymore, as despite being an excellent dark fantasy tale, it often gets overlooked when fans talk about the genre.

Claymore is based on the manga written and illustrated by Norihiro Yagi, the artist who also created Angel Densetsu and the long-running Ariadne in the Blue Sky. Serialized in Monthly Shnen Jump, the series debuted in June 2001. Claymore was one of the series running when Monthly Shnen Jump shut down in 2007, forcing the series to move to Shueisha's Jump Square magazine until the story concluded in late 2014. In 2007, Madhouse, the studio behind Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Overlord,...

Chuck Russell’s Witchboard remake, Chris Stuckmann’s debut and more set for Fantasia 2024
Image
It’s almost time for the Fantasia Film Festival! North America’s premiere genre festival has become the place to be if you’re a horror aficionado, and as a proud Montrealer, I get a kick out of the fact that it all takes place in my home city. I’ve been attending the festival for many years, and I always end up seeing some incredible movies. Last year’s Fantasia featured the Canadian premiere of what’s probably the best horror movie of the last year or so – Late Night With The Devil, and this year’s program seems certain to be another winner, with Fantasia announcing the first wave of titles today.

Here are some of the highlights:

Witchboard:

Before directing big-budget Hollywood flicks like The Mask and Eraser, Chuck Russell made his reputation with a pair of the best horror flicks of the 80s, A Nightmare...

A Nightmare on Elm Street: Devon Sawa wants to be the next Freddy Krueger
Robert Englund
Yesterday, we shared an interview in which Robert Englund confirmed that his days of playing Freddy Krueger are over – and for his replacement in the role, Englund suggested an actor whose name comes up frequently when people fan cast a new A Nightmare on Elm Street movie: Kevin Bacon. Bacon seems open to the idea, but there’s another actor out there who’s eager to take his turn wearing the glove and fedora. In response to the interview with Englund, Devon Sawa sent out a tweet saying, “I’d love to follow in his footsteps and play Freddie.” Forgive him for misspelling the name. It’s a common mistake.

Sawa is a genre regular whose credits include Final Destination, Idle Hands, Hunter Hunter, Black Friday, The Fanatic, and the Chucky TV series – where he played three different characters over the course of two seasons.

Sawa joins a list of...

Final Destination Star Devon Sawa Throws His Fedora in the Ring as the Next Freddy Krueger
Image
Final Destination star Devon Sawa has put himself forward as the next iteration of horror movie monster Freddy Krueger following actor Robert Englund’s recent declaration that he will not reprise the role again. Taking to social media, Sawa stated that he would "love to follow in his footsteps and play [Freddy]," whenever Warner Bros. Pictures decides to reawaken the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.

I’d love to follow in his footsteps and play Freddie. https://t.co/DeVreQVjk9 — devon sawa (@DevonESawa) May 30, 2023

Sawa is of course no stranger to the world of horror. The actor is well-known for leading the first installment in another iconic series, Final Destination, and more recently has played a recurring role in the resurrection of Chucky. And that’s without mentioning the likes of Idle Hands, Black Friday, Hunter Hunter, The Exorcism of Molly Hartley and, of course, Casper. But, how do Freddy Krueger...

‘Consumed’ – Horror Stalwart Devon Sawa Joins The Cast of The Butcher Brothers’ Latest
Devon Sawa
Horror stalwart Devon Sawa (“Chucky,” Final Destination, Idle Hands) delivered a memorable turn in 2020’s survival horror Hunter Hunter. He’s set to return to the wilderness once more with Consumed, the latest horror movie by The Butcher Brothers.

THR reports that Sawa will play a “wild madman” the central married couple will encounter on a camping trip. Of course, it’s not the madman that’s the most significant threat; there’s something else in the woods with them.

Courtney Halverson (Unfriended, St. Agatha) and Mark Fariglietti (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines) costar with Sawa as “Jay and Beth, a married couple taking a celebratory camping trip a year after Beth’s cancer remission, who find themselves trapped between a wild madman (Sawa) and a skin stealing monster.”

A skin stealing monster, plus Sawa in a wild turn? We’re in.

Doug Morrow: The Mastermind Behind ‘Orphan: First Kill’s Miraculous Transformation [Interview]
Image
When news broke that Isabelle Fuhrman would be reprising her role as Esther in a surprise prequel to the 2009 film Orphan, many were skeptical that the now 23 year old actress would be able to convincingly play a young child. At just ten years old, Fuhrman shocked audiences with her terrifying performance as a malevolent 30-something woman masquerading as an innocent little girl in Jaume Collet-Serra’s original film. As the title implies, William Brent Bell’s prequel Orphan: First Kill follows Esther (originally known as Leena) and her murderous adventures before being adopted by the Coleman family, including her bloody escape from the Saarne institute and her affinity for blacklight painting.

Concerns about Fuhrman passing for a child proved to be unfounded and she once again turned in a fantastic performance as the baby-faced killer. Fuhrman does look remarkably young, but even the accomplished actress couldn’t pull off such...

Dan Stevens, Mary Mack, Thomas Middleditch, and Sean Giambrone in Solar Opposites (2020)
Hulu New Releases: March 2021
Dan Stevens, Mary Mack, Thomas Middleditch, and Sean Giambrone in Solar Opposites (2020)
Hopefully March will bring respite from crippling snow storms and frigid temperatures for much of the globe. And if it doesn’t? Well, Hulu’s got some new streaming options at least!

Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2021 are relatively slight on Hulu originals. Thankfully, one beloved original of note is coming back this month. Solar Opposites will premiere all episodes of its second season on March 26. This sci-fi animated comedy from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland is a breath of fresh alien air.

On the movie side of things, Hulu is premiering Boss Level on March 5. This actioner will star the delightful Frank Grillo and the decidedly less delightful Mel Gibson. Speaking of delightful though, the documentary Kid 90 will arrive on March 12. This comes from Punky Brewster star Soleil Moon Frye and features hours of footage she shot in the ’90s that will depict what...
