The Top 13 Highest-Grossing Concert Films of All Time
Image
“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” made a surprise appearance on the theatrical release calendar this October and has already become the second-highest grossing concert documentary ever, drawing in fans who wanted to re-experience her Eras Tour in movie form and those who weren’t able to catch this summer’s concert. But while “The Eras Tour” movie still isn’t the top music doc (yet), it’s something of an outlier when it comes to just how much it’s made at the box office — $178 million and counting.

Several other big-name musicians and bands have released documentaries about their tours or certain albums, but the only ones to come close to the success of “The Eras Tour” include Michael Jackson and Justin Bieber, so far. Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” tour documentary, slated for a Dec. 1 release, could further shake up the stats and the box office.

Below we’ve rounded up...

Katy Perry Described Russell Brand as ‘Controlling’ During Their Marriage: ‘It Was Just Like a Tornado’ (Video)
Katy Perry and Russell Brand married in October 2010, a year after meeting when Perry had a cameo in Brand’s movie “Get Him to the Greek.” They announced their divorce 14 months later, and the “Roar” singer has since described her ex-husband as “controlling” and “really hurtful.”

As she said on “60 Minutes Australia” in 2020, “It was just like a tornado, it was everything happening at once.”

Perry and Brand’s relationship is under the microscope in light of new allegations of rape and sexual assault against the comedian. As fans of Perry’s recall, Brand told his then-wife he was divorcing her via text, moments before she was due onstage ahead of a major concert. The moment was captured in Perry’s “Part of Me” concert documentary.

Never forget when Russell Brand dumped Katy Perry via text (!) and had her *in bits* before a huge show. You Don’T treat...

After Writing for Pop’s Biggest Stars, Bonnie McKee Wants People to Step Into Her Own World
Image
Bonnie McKee was at one of the lowest, darkest moments of her life when she had a validating experience with Lana Del Rey. The singer approached her at a party in 2019 and held up her phone to show what she had been listening to on her way there: McKee’s 2015 song “Bombastic.” McKee was shocked that Del Rey even remembered who she was; they had only met once at a Coachella party years prior.

They exchanged phone numbers that night and spoke on the phone days later. Del Rey said...

Katy Perry Falls to Longtime Trademark Nemesis Katie Perry in Infringement Battle

Back in 2012, Katy Perry stood her ground on “Part of Me,” singing all about her newfound invincibility. “This is the part of me that you’re never gonna ever take away from me,” she declared. Unfortunately, thanks to a verdict from the judge ruling over her longtime trademark battle with Australian fashion designer Katie Perry, her own stage name isn’t one of the things that can’t be taken away from her.

“This is a tale of two women, two teenage dreams and one name,” Justice Brigitte Markovic wrote in her ruling,...

Invisible Narratives Hires Apple Music Vet Julie Pilat as President of Music (Exclusive)
Image
Invisible Narratives has hired Apple Music veteran Julie Pilat as president of music.

Founded by CEO Adam Goodman, Invisible Narratives is a shopping and entertainment company “at the intersection of the creator economy, the crypto economy and the entertainment business.”

In her new role, Pilat will develop new partnerships across the music industry, empower musicians and fans and use storytelling and technology to monetize video content across fandoms. She will report directly to Goodman.

Prior to joining Invisible Narratives, Pilat spent eight years at Apple Music as a key executive. In 2013, she was recruited by Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre to be the first head of music at Beats Music. Upon Apple’s acquisition of the company, Pilat spearheaded the launch of Beats 1, the first radio station to broadcast live from L.A., New York and London to more than 150 countries worldwide.

Katy Perry Sings in a Toilet, Toasts a Giant Mask, and Plays the Hits at Vegas Residency
Image
“Play” time has begun in Las Vegas.

On Wednesday night, Katy Perry launched her highly anticipated Las Vegas residency at the Resorts World Theater. Aptly titled “Play,” the show is quintessential Perry, who indulged the emotional, the over-the-top, the whimsical, the psychedelic, and even the cheesy over the course of 95 minutes.

The concert — which the artist is referring to as “Perry Playland” — amounted to a giant singalong, which seemed to be exactly what she had in mind. Just one day before opening night, Perry posted a video of the setlist...

‘AGT': Watch Heidi Klum Give Her Golden Buzzer to This ‘Magic’ Quick-Change Artist (Video)
America's Got Talent (2006)
“America’s Got Talent” is no stranger to quick-change performers, but until Léa Kyle showed up, “AGT” had never seen a quick-change magician. That’s what judge Heidi Klum decided Kyle was, when she gave the 25-year-old contestant her Golden Buzzer on Tuesday’s episode of the NBC competition.

Kyle, who is a French native, performed an amazing quick-change routine to “Swish Swish” and “Part of Me” by Katy Perry, moving in and out of outfits so quickly that it was invisible to the naked eye. Klum was so taken with Kyle’s ability to swap her clothes faster than a model backstage at an haute-couture show that she decided Kyle deserved to move right on to the “AGT” Season 16 live shows.

Of course, Kyle almost died of excitement when she got the Golden Buzzer from the “Queen of Fashion,” as she called her.

“I’ve got to tell you, we...

‘Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil’ Review: The Pop Star Confesses in a Startlingly Powerful Documentary
Image
In its earliest moments, Demi Lovato’s new documentary series looks familiar and even comforting to fans of the genre of backstage concert confessionals. We see Lovato doing a pre-show cheer with her backup dancers, performing framed by massive screens of her own face, sleeping on the jet, racing from quick-change to quick-change. Throughout, she is too much a pro to betray any emotion beyond anticipation of what well-rehearsed step lies ahead. These beats are as familiar to the music-doc connoisseur as are any of Lovato’s songs, and they’re only really notable when they’re subverted — like in the masterful 2012 film “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” in which the “Firework” singer, having just been informed that her marriage is over, weeps backstage before forcing herself into the pneumatic tube that leads to the stage and painting a grin on.

“Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil,” a four-episode series made for YouTube,...

Lethal Weapon 4: a retrospective
Guy Buckland Dec 14, 2017

Guy takes a belated look at the fourth (but possibly not final) film in the Lethal Weapon franchise…

Spoilers lie ahead for Lethal Weapons 2 to 4.

See related The Oa: 10 questions (sort of) answered The Oa: Netflix renews for season 2 Netflix's The Oa: spoiler-free review

At the beginning of 2016, Den of Geek gave me the opportunity to rank the Lethal Weapon films in order of merit and then write about each one individually. This made me very happy, as it is a franchise for which I have a great deal of passion – both positive and negative. But like a reluctant hit man stuck in a clichéd redemption arc, I just couldn’t finish the job.

By the time I had produced a well-reasoned account of why the third in the series was objectively the worst – an assertion I still stand by, despite what you’re about to read...

James Cameron Says If Avatar 2 And 3 Flop, The Franchise Is Done
It’s always worth giving James Cameron the benefit of the doubt. Before release, Titanic was widely seen as an overly extravagant disaster in waiting, before becoming the highest grossing film of all-time. In run-up up to Avatar, many were questioning who this movie about weird blue alien cat people would appeal to. It then passed Titanic and became the highest grossing pic of all-time. Are you seeing a pattern here? Despite that, 20th Century Fox’s decision to go full steam ahead with four Avatar sequels feels a teeny bit foolhardy, especially as people don’t seem to be clamoring for them.

But Cameron is still forging ahead with production on Avatar 2 and 3, which will make use of cutting-edge underwater motion capture and, presumably, the very pinnacle of 3D technology. And though he’s a famously decisive, confident director, even he realizes that he’s not invincible.

In an interview with Vanity Fair,...

How ‘Mudbound’ Star Jason Mitchell Proved He’s Much More Than Just ‘A Guy Who Was Able to Imitate Eazy-e’
Mary J. Blige, Jonathan Banks, Jason Clarke, Garrett Hedlund, Carey Mulligan, Rob Morgan, and Jason Mitchell in Mudbound (2017)
It seemed obvious enough at the time: After breaking out with his first lead role in F. Gary Gray’s 2015 biopic “Straight Outta Compton,” earning acclaim and awards for his note-perfect portrayal of rap royalty Eric “Eazy-e” Wright, actor Jason Mitchell was about to become a huge star. Usually, that sort of attention means that actors can cherry pick roles from bountiful offers.

That’s not what happened. Instead, Mitchell landed a handful of small roles in mostly underseen indies like “Barry” and “Vincent N Roxxy,” and started to worry that “Straight Outta Compton” was a one-time thing.

Two years later, the tide has turned again, with Mitchell garnering accolades for his turn in Dee Rees’ hard-hitting historical drama “Mudbound.” Ironically, he still has “Straight Outta Compton” to thank for a part that seems poised to earn him even more awards.

“To be honest, nothing big had ever been offered to me before,...

‘Mr. Robot’: Sam Esmail on Maybe Reaching The Series’ Midpoint and Not Minding When Fans Guess The Twists
Rami Malek in Mr. Robot (2015)
[Editor’s note: Spoilers for “Mr. Robot” Season 3, Episode 6, “eps3.5_kill-pr0cess.inc” follow.]

There’s a chance that we may have reached the halfway point of “Mr. Robot” as a series, according to creator Sam Esmail.

Part of the “Mr. Robot” narrative has always been how Esmail originally started writing the project as a feature film, before realizing at a certain point that it would work better as a TV show. And as he recently told IndieWire during an NBC Universal press event, the “big mile markers” of that original screenplay are still, according to him, “in line with what I had in mind for the feature.”

This includes the final moments of Season 3, Episode 6, “eps3.5_kill-pr0cess.inc” — specifically, the 71 bombings that may have killed thousands while Elliot was distracted trying to save one E-Corp facility in New York City.

In fact, Esmail pinpointed this event as the midpoint of his original script. By IndieWire’s math, this would mean that there...

Selena Quintanilla’s Sister on Kim Kardashian’s Halloween Costume: ‘She Looked Real Latina’
Jennifer Lopez in Selena (1997)
The Internet reacted with a wide range of fiery emotions when Kim Kardashian dressed up as the late Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla this Halloween. One tweeted: “Kim Kardashian dressed as Selena makes me so uncomfortable.” Another wrote: “Part of me just isn’t okay with Kim Kardashian dressing up as Selena for Halloween. I doubt she appreciates how amazing she was.” But Selena’s sister Suzette Quintanilla only had love for Kardashian’s costume choice.

The sister of the beloved Tex-Mex Queen gushed when a host of radio station Power 106 Los Angeles told Suzette that Kardashian’s Halloween homage to...

Shawn Levy Reveals a Huge Stranger Things Spoiler He Accidentally Let Slide at Comic-Con
Nerds, writers, people of the internet- we have failed. Months ago, Stranger Things producer and director Shawn Levy revealed a spoiler regarding Season 2 on accident, and no one caught on to it! You're probably wondering what it could be? Well, if you have already watched Stranger Things, read on, otherwise... spoilers. It's in the title dude.

Months ago, while at Comic-Con, Shawn Levy was doing an interview with Collider, talking about the characters. It was a pretty run of the mill interview, and a question was asked about some of the characters, and Levy made a statement that you would think people might have theorized about, I mean, at least the nutjob conspiracy theorists, but no one did. Levy says it best himself:

"I think I can say this now, by the way, I did an interview at Comic-Con, I think, where someone asked, 'Oh, do you think Bob is gonna be beloved?...

Murder On The Orient Express Review
Kenneth Branagh’s Murder On The Orient Express – 2017’s take on Agatha Christie’s 1934 dead-body caper – reminds of a cinematic time capsule that was dug up and never dusted off. It’s not the first, nor even fourth time Christie’s words would be uttered by actors aboard their high-class locomotive prison. Sidney Lumet’s 1974 classic shines with old-Hollywood prestige, Alfred Molina stars in a 2001 modern-day take, Japan televised a 2015 miniseries event overseas – so how would Branagh differentiate? Apparently by staying devout to Christie’s 1930s aesthetic, conception and tone. A relic whose connotation translates to “Back in my day!,” rolling slowly down the tracks for an almost two-hour whodunit that runs out of steam far before reaching desired conclusions.

Branagh stands-in as star detective Hercule Poirot, an investigator whose reputation is outshined only by his feral-animal-lookin’ mustache. In Istanbul, with the help of philandering companion Bouc (Tom Bateman), Poirot...

The Internet Reacts to Kim Kardashian Dressing Up as Selena Quintanilla
Jennifer Lopez in Selena (1997)
Kim Kardashian ended her Halloween homage to music legends with a bang: dressing up as the late Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla. “My fave Selena!” the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star captioned the video she posted on Instagram.

But it wasn’t everyone’s fave.

Over the weekend, Kardashian’s costume choices provoked strong reactions — from praise to scorn — for dressing up as iconic women of color. First, she morphed into the beloved late R&B singer Aaliyah. Then, she donned a jumpsuit that matched the one Quintanilla wore for her last concert before being shot to death by the president of her fan club,...

Amityville: The Awakening Review
For a long-pushed, unceremoniously dropped – straight to Google Play to watch for Free – 2017 reboot-a-ma-jig, Amityville: The Awakening sure is brazenly confident. Like, beyond pure existence. I’m all for revamping franchises in new and chilling ways, but to shade other Amityville entries without first proving your own merit? That’s exactly what happens when Thomas Mann’s draped-in-black horror devotee asks which Amityville film should be watched from inside 112 Ocean Avenue. “Remakes totally blow,” spouts his goth-punk friend. Hey – at least 2005’s The Amityville Horror features Ryan Reynolds chopping wood shirtless and in longjohns. Which is more than this generic Kidz-Bop mess of redundant haunter misfires has to offer.

Bella Thorne stars as Belle Walker, a damn-the-world transplant now inhabiting the famed Amityville manor where Ronnie DeFeo Jr. murdered his family – but she doesn’t know it. Mother Joan (Jennifer Jason Leigh) claims she scored a killer deal on a...

The two sisters showed while they may have grown up in Hollywood, they still have some serious country moves, with the duo dancing around as their dad did a guitar solo.

Call it the curse of a galaxy far, far away. It Reviews: A Delightful King Adaptation That Balances Horror And Heart
That cackling noise you hear isn’t Pennywise, but New Line executives laughing all the way to the bank.

The review embargo for It has finally lifted, and the critical consensus has deemed Andy Muschietti’s reboot to be a delightful King adaptation that balances a coming-of-age yarn with electrifying horror. Which is just as well given Muschietti originally feared that his creative license would have left the legendary author none too pleased.

Alas, that’s not the case; not only did Stephen King take no issue with the plot changes made within It Part 1 – The Losers Club, but the horror mastermind was also left pleasantly surprised by the quality of Andy Muschietti’s final product. Among the review extracts below, you’ll find that Friday’s long-anticipated horror release draws comparisons to the iconic Stand By Me, while there’s also praise for Bill Skarsgård and his deeply unsettling performance as Pennywise.

Interview: Dee Wallace Discusses Red Christmas and Reflects on E.T. The Extra-terrestrial and Rob Zombie’s Halloween
Being a mom during the holidays can make Santa Claus' job look like a holly jolly cakewalk. As the head of a dysfunctional family in Craig Anderson's Red Christmas, Dee Wallace not only has to worry about keeping the peace, she also has to try to keep her family members in one piece when a killer crashes their festivities. With the holiday horror film out now in select theaters, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Wallace about her multifaceted new role, and we also had the chance to reflect on her amazing film career, including the legacy of Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and her experience playing Cynthia Strode in Rob Zombie's Halloween.

Thanks so much for taking the time to talk and congratulations on Red Christmas. I’m a big fan of your career, and one thing I’ve always appreciated is that you...

Street in San Diego Named After Mark Hamill
Luke Skywalker himself will now forever be connected to San Diego, California. That's because over the weekend city leaders dedicated a street in honor of actor Mark Hamill. A street is now named after him in Clairemont – the very neighborhood Hamill spent several years of his childhood in the 1960s.

Mark Hamill tweeted out photos of the large event(below), and the unveiling of "Mark Hamill Drive."

Hamill visited his old neighborhood for the street dedication ceremony. Hamill attended Hale Junior High School in Clairemont in the early 1960s, lived with his family in the 5900 block of Castleton Drive at the time. Hamill came from a military family so he moved a lot, Hamill said he went to nine schools in 12 years. But he spent the longest amount of time in San Diego. At the ceremony he said:

"Part of me is honored because the community reached out to make...

Shawn Levy Says Stranger Things Season 2 Will Be Darker and Scarier, But Have the Best Heart
I loved Stranger Things. It was beautiful, and while many people say it harped on the nostalgia of 80's movies, I ask, what's wrong with that? 80's movies were great and I wish we had more movies that used that era's sensibilities. But besides the nostalgia, the show itself was creative and was obviously an interesting and ambitious story that someone wanted to tell, and apparently, they are ready to tell even more but are gonna get a bit darker.

Shawn Levy, who is an executive producer and director for Stranger Things recently opened up about the upcoming second season to THR, and he hyped up some of the things to expect.

"Season two makes the Demogorgon look quaint. I was just in the edit room with the brothers yesterday, and we’re like, ‘this is definitely darker, I hope everyone’s down with this,’ because the threats to Hawkins...

Movies to Show My Son: ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’
Welcome to another installment of Movies to Show My Son. This is the blog series were I discuss movies I can’t wait to show my son in the future. I’ll be covering my own personal experience with the movie, movie and life lessons I hope he will learn, and lastly my concerns about showing said film. This week’s film is Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

My Memory:

What surprised me about my memories of Who Framed Roger Rabbit is how I do not have many of them. As someone who was born in 1984 I was the right age for It, but for whatever reason, it was not one of those showcase films I watched as a child. Part of me thinks it was because my parents did not allow me to watch it, and after rewatching it recently I could understand why.

There are some moments that do stick out.
