Exclusive: Screenwriter J S Mayank has been tapped by producers Kate Cohen, Alexander Vesely and Tony Robbins to join Oscar nominee and Bafta winner Lesley Paterson (All Quiet on the Western Front) in writing the feature adaptation of Viktor Frankl‘s classic treatise, Man’s Search for Meaning.

Paterson had been writing the script with her husband and writing partner Simon Marshall, as was reported in Deadline a year ago. At the time, Marshall had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Marshall died last June.

After taking some time to regroup and grieve, the filmmaking team undertook a search for someone to team up with Paterson.

“Finding a writing partner who could understand and support me on this journey while at the same time servicing this masterpiece felt like an impossible ask,” says Paterson. “J S has stepped into this role seamlessly and I’m so honored and relieved to have teamed up with him.

Back in 2019, “Iron Man 3” production executive Chris Fenton filed an explosive lawsuit against former employer Dmg Entertainment, a once-highflying company that bridged Hollywood movies and Chinese distribution.

After a legal back and forth that included a Dmg countersuit that was later tossed, Fenton’s case is finally headed to trial next week and is expected to expose some of the opaque ways China did business in Hollywood before tensions between the U.S. and the communist superpower boiled over in 2021, leading studios to reassess their plans for the market. Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.

August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.

Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

Hard Knock‘s new season focusing on the New York Jets and the second season of the original drama Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty join Max’s August 2023 lineup, along with Tracy Morgan’s latest comedy special. Rap Sh!t season two premieres on August 10th, and the new half-hour young adult animated series Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake arrives on August 31st.

Cillian Murphy is definitely gaining some attention as the release of Oppenheimer takes the world by storm. Aside from his leading role in the new biopic, he's no stranger to Christopher Nolan movies, often being a bit of an underdog in these storylines. But Murphy's most underrated performance has nothing to do with Nolan.

But one of the most beloved post-apocalyptic horror movies is a low-budget British gem called 28 Days Later. The movie was pretty successful, despite its questionable quality and gruesome imagery. Today, it's rated highly among fans and critics, and 20 years later, 28 Days Later stands strong in the horror movie world. But many people don't realize it was also a big break for Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy.

For instance, Back to the Future's depiction of flying cars may have been over the top. However, its portrayal of drones, mobile-aided payment, biometrics devices, and many other future technologies is right on the money.

When science fiction movies and TV shows are not foreseeing what's ahead, they use their dystopian settings to reflect the present day's contemporary issues, concerns, and phobias. For instance, a Black Mirror season 6 episode spins a true-crime yarn in its sci-fi narrative and subtly critiques the streaming era.

Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy have made a number of movies together, all of them hits with both critics and audiences, though only one of them ranks as the best. While Murphy served in supporting roles for Nolan in their first five collaborations, he will take the lead in Oppenheimer, their sixth movie together as actor and director. Cast in the title role of J. Robert Oppenheimer, Murphy plays the father of the atomic bomb in Nolan’s biographical drama set during World War II. With Murphy appearing in half of Nolan's 12 features as of the release of Oppenheimer, he's the filmmaker's second most regular acting collaborator, after Michael Caine.

HBO Max may (hopefully) be done randomly pulling original series from the service, but there are still a number of TV shows and films due to leave HBO Max in January as part of the regularly scheduled shuffling.

Multiple seasons of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” will leave HBO Max on Jan. 3, so get those final binge-watches in Asap. And the beloved WB series “Everwood” is due to depart on Jan. 21 if you feel like seeing what young Chris Pratt was up to in the early 2000s.
