Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s largest phones and broadband internet company, unveiled an investment and production slate of two new series and two movies on Tuesday, the first day of the Taiwan Creative Content Fest.
The new titles are part of the giant firm’s effort to build out the creative industries ecosystem and follow a year on from a co-financing deal with Taiwan’s ministry of culture.

These are to support high-quality content, support top-quality distribution channels (the company claims 10 million mobile users and 4 million fixed-line broadband households); and to prioritize sound business models. Jorja Smith announced a new project, Be Right Back, out May 14th. The singer previewed the eight-track set with “Gone,” an electro-soul single built on a watery piano loop and glitchy drums. In the video edited by Smith and Ivor Alice and shot by Erin Corrian-Alexis, the singer takes a nighttime stroll as she reflects on loss.
“My God, I lost you at the corner / On God, I lost you in the moment,” Smith sings on the track, a soothing and somewhat ambiguous expression of regret. “Why now and not a little later?...

“American Idol” fans want a do-over. Just minutes after Cuban-American performer Yurisbel received a golden ticket to Hollywood based solely on his personality, not his voice — something Katy Perry suggested they may later “regret” — the judges decided to send home gifted singer-songwriter Ace Stiles.
Ace, one of the long-running reality TV show’s first-ever transgender contestants, sang his original song “Addicted,” which is “not about drugs because I’m only 16 and that’s illegal” (watch above). Katy and Luke Bryan told the “introverted” high school student that he wasn’t quite ready for Hollywood, while Lionel Richie threw him a pity vote to let him know they still “believe” in him. Tears in his eyes, Ace left the stage and wrapped his arms around his supportive mother.

Things have been pretty quiet on the movie front for a while, given the pandemic, but this weekend marks a major upswing in content for cinema lovers, with multiple brand new releases available. Judd Apatow’s The King of Staten Island is unfortunately not up for streaming at present, but Netflix Original Da 5 Bloods, the latest effort from the Oscar-winning Spike Lee, is. For family audiences, there’s also Artemis Fowl over on Disney Plus, which was originally set for a theatrical release back in May.
Even outside of these new films though, there’s plenty of fresh titles coming to the various streaming services this weekend, from classic movies, recent hits, new TV series, old TV series, etc. Whatever combination of services you’re subscribed to, you can fill your whole weekend watching what’s coming to Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon, HBO Max and the rest over the next few days.

2nd Update: Part of the Lionsgate reconfiguration means the ending of Lionsgate’s partnership with Jeff Clanagan in Codeblack, the division that generated Kevin Hart’s Let Me Explain, Addicted, and other projects geared toward an urban audience. Said a spokesman: “Codeback has brought us tremendous films and relationships. Though the terms of our current partnership are ending, we expect to continue to have a great relationship with Jeff and his team.” In ending the partnership, four employees of Codeblack have been let go, sources said.
Updated: Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake just sent out an internal email confirming the Lionsgate layoffs. Also, sources said that some of the layoffs come in the move of New York-based marketing/distribution staff to Santa Monica, and more from layoffs in the post production department, under new head Matt Leonetti. Drake’s letter appears under the original scoop.

One of the most defining moments of Avicii’s too-brief career came at the 2012 Ultra Music Festival, when Madonna appeared on stage to introduce him and their first collaboration, “Girl Gone Wild.” That the queen of pop acknowledged the then-22-year-old Tim Bergling — who died Friday at the age of 28 of undisclosed causes — as a peer and a collaborator wasn’t just a watershed moment for him, it was one for dance music as well.
But actually, a more telling moment in the Swedish superstar’s career came a year later, at Ultra in 2013, when he unveiled his new bluegrass-meets-electronic sound for the first time. Avicii opened his set with his signature hit, “Levels,” a blockbuster track that altered the face of Edm when it was first played at Ultra in 2011. But immediately afterward, Aloe Blacc took the stage to perform “Wake Me Up,” released just days earlier, live for the first time.

Audiences may already be looking ahead to Avengers: Infinity War, but this weekend could feature an interesting battle among the top three. While we're expecting A Quiet Place to return to the weekend's #1 spot, the race could be a little closer should Rampage hold on better than expected or if Amy Schumer's new comedy I Feel Pretty outperforms expectations. The weekend also sees the release of Fox Searchlight's Super Troopers 2 and Lionsgate's release of Traffik into a moderate number of locations. Beginning with A Quiet Place, the horror/thriller has already brought in nearly $110 million and is poised to top recent horror hits Split and The Conjuring. With Paramount adding another 219 locations for a total of 3,808 theaters, we're anticipating a 36% drop and a three-day right around $21 million. Come the end of the weekend the film should top $130 million domestically. Look for Dwayne Johnson's Rampage to...

Pleasant enough, if not paper-thin and featherweight, The Perfect Match is a bland picture starring attractive people that never quite seems to connect the dots. The romance at the core of the story is between Charlie (Terrence Jenkins), an agent with an incredible home, and Eva (Cassie Ventura, perhaps best known as R&B singer Cassie who had a hit single Me & U a few years ago), a gorgeous women of little substance — although we learn she does like House of Cards. At one point in their friends with benefits arrangement, director Billie Woodruff (Honey, Addicted) makes his point with a montage scored to current radio hit Player by Tinashe, in one of the many moments that feel a little too on the nose.
With an uneven ensemble, The Perfect Match attempts to add context to Charlie’s life: his sister Sherry (Paula Patton) is conveniently a therapist who offers...

10 Cloverfield Lane is the latest mystery box thriller from J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot and it's looking to top a list of four new wide releases this weekend. Additional new releases include Sacha Baron Cohen's comedy The Brothers Grimsby, the new faith-based feature The Young Messiah and the romantic-comedy The Perfect Match. All four will be competing with some strong holdovers, most notably Disney's Zootopia, which will be holding on to the top spot for a second week in a row, and Deadpool, which could top $10 million in its fifth weekend in release. Zootopia enters its second weekend in release after breaking the The Lorax's March opening weekend record for an animated film. As such, it seems appropriate to use The Lorax's 44.7% second weekend drop as a basis for comparison this weekend. On a daily basis Zootopia has performed well when compared to The Lorax, suggesting the smart money...
