Some young actors go for the brass ring immediately after getting a hit. Others just care about the material and doing good work. It may not always please their agent, but it creates a staying-true-to-your-sensibilities career path that’s filled with a palpable authenticity. Outside of “Dredd,” talented 29-year-old Olivia Thirlby has hardly ever starred in big-budget studio films. She burst onto the screen with magnetic charisma in David Gordon Green’s “Snow Angels,” and before that, she had a small but memorable role in Paul Greengrass’ “United 93.” She also turned heads with an unforgettable role in Jason Reitman’s “Juno,” as the perfect object of affection in Sundance hit “The Wackness,” as one half of a crumbling relationship in "Red Knot," and with quiet presence and sexual power in Ry Russo-Young’s deeply underrated “Nobody Walks.” Not all of these films are particularly big hits, but they are...

Between July 4th excitement and the upcoming frenzy of San Diego Comic Con, a cinematic counterbalance to multiplex spectacle might be in order. And particularly with temperatures on the rise, "Red Knot" just might be a welcome respite —today we have exclusive clip from the film. Read More: Review: 'Red Knot' Starring Vincent Kartheiser, Olivia Thirlby and Billy Campbell Directed by Scott Cohen and led by "Mad Men" star Vincent Kartheiser and Olivia Thirlby, the story follows a young writer and his wife who turn his research trip to Antarctica into a belated honeymoon voyage, combining business with pleasure. But once on the ship, they realize their marriage might be more fragile than they previously thought. In this scene, as the couple are surrounded by penguins, some of the issues they've never really discussed are broached. "Red Knot" is one to make some time for —I called it...

Waves
Written by Scott Curtis Graham
Directed by Don Gerardo Frasco
Philippines, 2015
In Don Gerardo Frasco’s Waves, the notion of a peaceful island spirals into a cacophony of frustration and despair when two old friends try to rekindle their love for one another. With every scene, new challenges surface for our main characters to confront within the confines of their crumbling haven. The triumph of Waves is Frasco’s ability to enrapture the trouble that exists in paradise. Sure, its Philippine environments look beautiful, but when propped up against the anguish of the story’s lies and mistrust, they take on the feel of an awkward, unreachable dream for our disillusioned secret lovers.
Its main characters are thinly sketched early on, yet details illuminate as their background unfolds throughout the course of the film. Here is a story about a Filipino man (Baron Geisler) and an American model (Ilona Struzik...

Red Knot

Written by: Scott Cohen
Starring: Olivia Thirlby, Vincent Kartheiser, Billy Campbell
USA, 2014
A peaceful marvel of a drama studying an unraveling marriage on the brink of fading before it even started, Scott Cohen’s Red Knot sets in motion stifling inner conflicts against a beautiful backdrop of Antarctic landscape. Olivia Thirlby and Vincent Kartheiser star in the picture that took home the Fipresci Grand Jury prize at the Seattle International Film Festival. Stunning and grand in scope, the film may be too simplified for big multiplexes yet demand the respect of art houses. Absolutely dazzling to look at, the derailing love story of Peter and Chloe is overshadowed by the impression set forth by the Antarctic. Surely in the wheelhouse of the art photographer, Red Knot will be remembered purely for its cinematography. Like pulling over the side of the road and soaking in a beautiful sight,...

The prospect of watching an 86-minute flick set almost entirely at sea might not suit every cinematic palette, especially those who were unable to sit through The Blair Witch Project without a brown paper bag handy. Luckily, the shaky camerawork and found footage amateurishness are absent here as Scott Cohen’s impressive directorial debut, Red Knot, prides itself on a flawless visual presentation.
Newlyweds Peter (Vincent Kartheiser) and Chloe (Olivia Thirlby) are at the centre of this isolated Antarctic expedition tale. Instead of a scantily-clad stint on a sun-kissed beach that most newlyweds choose for their honeymoon, this pair opts for the cold, icy pull of an Arctic journey. At the behest of Peter, Chloe agrees to join her husband on a research vessel out of Argentina, bound for the South Pole. His aspirations as a writer twinned with his love of famous travel writers seemingly take first place over a lusty getaway.

For some, relationships mean navigating the difference between the person we fall in love with and who that person becomes within that couple. It can be a negotiation of accepting what is admired and loved in the other person, above the traits that emerge over time that can range from driving us crazy, to showing an uglier side that perhaps no one involved wants to acknowledge. In short, two people deciding to throw in together is a complex bridging of emotions, personalities, expectations, and more. In Scott Cohen's ambitious and admirable debut, "Red Knot," the filmmaker endeavors to show two people drawn together by who they are, and slowly thrust apart by what they've become. Peter (Vincent Kartheiser) and Chloe (Olivia Thirlby) are young, in love, married, and ready for adventure. A belated honeymoon trip sees them travel to South America to board the titular Red Knot, a ship...

We're so excited to present Visionaries, a new video series that explores the creative process one fascinating person at a time. The series will include filmmakers, TV producers, musicians and other entertainment masterminds.
First up is Scott Cohen, a photographer and filmmaker who is making his directing debut with Red Knot, a brutal, evocative study of a new marriage. Cohen shot the entire film over about a month on board a research vessel steaming its way from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Antarctica. Mad Men's Vincent Kartheiser and Olivia Thirlby (Juno) star as newlyweds Peter and Chloe, who join the voyage when Peter, a writer, is offered the opportunity to interview a famous marine biologist. As a result, the trip also acts as their honeymoon, but as the seas grow more treacherous, so does the tension between them.

Peter (Vincent Kartheiser) and Chloe (Olivia Thirlby) are newlyweds on something of an impromptu honeymoon after boarding a research vessel in Argentina en route through the Southern Ocean to Antarctica. It’s a working vacation of sorts for Peter though as he’s a writer fascinated with the continent, the sea and the wildlife that surrounds them. The couple are at ease physically and sexually, but it’s clear in their communication — and lack thereof — that not all is well. As he devotes his attention to conversation with a renowned whale biologist (Roger Payne, playing himself) she finds herself drifting aimlessly well outside her own element. That emotional current takes her right into the path of Captain Emerson (Billy Campbell), and soon Peter and Chloe’s young marriage hits choppy waters… well, you get the idea. Red Knot places the sad ugliness of a relationship in jeopardy against the stark beauty of a harsh and unforgiving landscape...

Choosing Arctic backdrops to parallel the story of a marriage growing chillier by the minute is certainly not the freshest idea around. But Scott Cohen's Red Knot exhibits such spot-on, heartbreaking honesty about behaviors that tear many couples apart — passive-aggressiveness, career obsession, seeking validation to soothe one's inadequacies — that it's easy to forgive Cohen his metaphorical excesses. Vincent Kartheiser and Olivia Thirlby play newlyweds who opt to spend their honeymoon aboard a vessel bound for the South Pole. Promising excitement and adventure, Kartheiser instead spends most of the trip enmeshed in research for his upcoming article, chatting up the whaling experts aboard and leaving the perpetually bored Thirlby to stew in their spartan lod...

Scott Cohen’s directorial feature debut, Red Knot, was helmed on a 23-day jaunt along the coasts of Argentina and Antarctica. Sounds like quite the feat, especially considering it’s Cohen’s first shot at a feature. However, his prior work as a photographer enabled him to harness the beautiful landscapes explored by his two stars, Vincent Kartheiser and Olivia Thirlby.
As a pair of adventure seekers, the newly-married couple opt to take a belated honeymoon cruise. I say cruise loosely because their trip actually takes place on board a research vessel headed for Antarctica. Like all flicks set at sea, or in confined spaces (or both if we’re talking about a submarine pic), tension begins to chip away at the happy couple.
This first preview offers at glimpse at the sheer breathtaking locales Cohen was able to lens. His choice of destination for the shoot is winning, as...

Nearly five years after the film was shot, the first trailer has been released for Red Knot. Olivia Thirlby (Dredd 3D) and Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men) star in this drama about a couple who rediscover themselves while sailing abroad.
Set on a research vessel en route to the icy wastes of Antarctica, Peter Harrison (Vincent Kartheiser) is a writer sharing his dream of going to the ends of the earth with his wife (Olivia Thirlby ). The confines of the ship and the wide open spaces of the southern ocean set the stage for an unraveling marriage encountering their first rite of passage as a couple. Red Knot is a narrative feature film that invites a broader conversation around themes that are at once universal and personal: our closest relationships and the wilderness that lies between us.

Red Knot Trailer With Olivia Thirlby and Vincent Kartheiser; Film Finally Set For Release Next Month
More Olivia Thirlby is always a good thing. She's one of our best actresses and we need a lot more of her on the silver, and smaller, screen. Same with Vincent Kartheiser, who we don't see enough outside of weasel roles (Mad Men) or villainous archetypes (In Time), both of which he plays rather well. He's not completely out of those woods in this Red Knot trailer, but perhaps the circumstances in the film will add a few layers of nuance to his eternally wandering eye. The film was shot by director Scott Cohen over five years ago, but is now being readied for release. And it looks gorgeous. Hit the jump for the Red Knot trailer and a few words from Thirlby on the movie's production. The film also stars Billy Campbell and opens at IFC in New York on December 5th. Hey Hollywood, we need more Olivia Thirlby. The talented actress isn't seen in movies or television as often as we'd like, so here's a pleasant surprise before the weekend—a new movie starring Thirlby. We hadn't heard of this one, and even more, it looks pretty damn good. Directed by Scott Cohen, and co-starring Vincent Kartheiser ("Mad Men") and Billy Campbell, the movie follows a young married couple who take a belated honeymoon aboard a research vessel bound for Antarctica. But as they go deeper into the journey, their relationship begins to fray. This looks like a particularly good character piece, coupled with stunning cinematography from the movie that was shot off the coasts of Argentina and Antarctica. "Red Knot" opens in limited release on December 5th. Watch below.

Last season on Mad Men, Vincent Kartheiser's Pete moved to California, and in the new movie Red Knot, Kartheiser is going even further afield: This time, he's heading all the way to Antarctica. Kartheiser and Olivia Thirlby play a married couple who finally decide to take a late, most unusual honeymoon aboard a research vessel that's heading to Earth's southernmost continent, but along the way, things get almost as icy between them as the dramatic, gorgeous glaciers they pass and peer at. Since the trailer for the film (opening December 5 at New York's IFC Center) is debuting exclusively on Vulture, you, too, can gawk at those stunning visuals, though you may be equally enticed by the sight of Kartheiser as a normal, modern-day dude with a healthy hairline. Enjoy!

Umedia has picked up world sales rights to relationship drama Red Knot, starring Mad Men’s Vincent Kartheiser and Dredd actress Olivia Thirlby.
The film, which won the Fipresci Grand Jury Prize for Best New American Cinema at the Seattle International Film Festival earlier this month, marks the directorial debut of Scott Cohen and was shot entirely on location on a research vessel crossing the Southern Ocean and in Antarctica.
Kartheiser (Mad Men) and Thirlby (Dredd) play Peter and Chloe, a young newly married couple from New York honeymooning aboard a research vessel bound for Antarctica at the command of Captain Emerson (Billy Campbell, The Killing). An act of betrayal divides the young lovers, driving Chloe to separate herself from Peter, both physically and emotionally.

It’s been about a decade since the last episode of Angel, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off series about the vampire with a soul, aired. The final episode of season five, Not Fade Away, first appeared on Us television screens on 19 May 2004. That seems simultaneously like a very long time ago, and not very long ago at all, because time is vast and human brains are small and fallible, but it’s safe to say that in TV years, it’s a pretty long goddamned time.

Kids. Such as Sex, Lies, and Videotape or Reservoir Dogs before it, and such as Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine and Fruitvale Station after it, Larry Clark & Harmony Korine’s seminal film is forever connected in “spirit” to the lieu where it received its secret midnight premiere screening in 1995. The Sundance Film Festival might be known as the birthplace of U.S indie filmmaking innovation, avant-gardism, a larger definition of the low budgeted film response to Hollywood in not only narrative but in the non-fiction form, but it is a festival made strong by its renewal and familiarity. That close acquaintanceness exists in Kids‘ starlets Rosario Dawson and Chloë Sevigny filmography/career path trajectory and connection to Park City (both have several indie films slated for ’14 – of which I’ve included in our predictions list) and it is that “familiarity” that is visibly noticeable in how I map out my annual predictions list.

At this year’s Comic-Con, I was able to sit down with Olivia Thirlby for an extended video interview. Urban was at the Con to promote his upcoming hard-r adaptation of the comic book series Judge Dredd. For those unfamiliar with the film, Dredd is an adaption of the 2000Ad comics character Judge Dredd, and it stars Karl Urban, Thirlby, and Lena Headey. The film follows Dredd and rookie Judge Cassandra Anderson (Thirlby) fighting through a tower that’s crawling with thugs in their attempt to bring down drug overlord Ma-ma (Headey). I actually got to see the film at Comic-Con and it’s great. During my interview with Thirlby we talked about the R rating, how she got involved in the project, deleted scenes, how Urban never takes off his helmet, the drug slow-mo, what it was like playing a bad ass girl, and a lot more. In addition,...
