After an impressive first season on TV, Kaiju No. 8 is coming to theaters next month. The big question: is it an original movie, or an omnibus film? The answer…it’s sort of both. Mainly, Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon is a big-screen re-edit of the first TV season. But it also contains the debut of a new episode, Hoshina’s Day Off. In a world where kaiju are constantly emerging and causing chaos, civilization’s most vital organization are the members of the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force. It’s Kafka Hibino’s biggest dream to join the force, but he’s failed every entry test he’s taken. He just doesn’t have the physical chops, until that fateful day he runs into a lone Kaiju — who merges with his body. Now he has the moves to ace the test and become the Akdf’s most valuable member — unless they learn his secret.

Last year, a lot of good anime series made it big into the industry, but the two that were at the top of the podium were Chugong and A-1 Pictures Solo Leveling, and Naoya Matsumoto and Production I.G.’s Kaiju No. 8. Both of them got a lot of love and support from anime fans but only one of them retained the first spot and it was obviously Solo Leveling.

There is no doubt that Kaiju No. 8 is indeed an intriguing narrative with enticing characters and thrilling plot development, but it couldn’t create hype as big as Solo Leveling. Solo Leveling had a lot of different things to offer that contributed to its success, but one thing that fans believe helped Solo Leveling was its multinational appeal.

Shonen manga tend to be some of the most mainstream and popular in the industry, and this is extended to their anime adaptations. On the other hand, seinen manga don't quite have the same appeal, namely due to them being intended for older audiences. However, there's currently one manga for this demographic that could find more mainstream success, especially if it's adapted.
Science fiction manga Snowball Earth has been running for four years, and in that time, it's begun to attract some major attention. The story combines elements from several popular genres of anime and manga, namely some big hits from the past few years. While an anime adaptation hasn't even been so much as hinted at yet, it's only a matter of time before it's produced to build upon the success of the manga.

Modern anime titles appeal to a wide variety of demographics, including older anime community members. For those who have been following anime since the 80s and 90s, there are still plenty of popular titles that appeal to older audiences. There may seem to be no shortage of titles that appeal to younger audiences. However, that doesn't mean that some of those same series can cultivate a following among older fans too.
Often, series that are successful with older audiences might have a more mature tone and themes. Conversely, they might offer a new twist on established anime tropes. Series like Dragon Ball can appeal to just about anyone, but sometimes that universal appeal can only go so far to interesting fans who have seen hundreds of similar action anime. That's what sets these examples apart from ones with universal appeal.

Every year, hundreds of manga are blessed with an animeadaptation, and a poll just showed which ones fans would like to see the most. Some exciting series were picked as one of the most anticipated to receive an anime adaptation, and this poll just showed that there is indeed demand and hype for them.
Each year, Anime Japan hosts a poll that asks manga fans which series they would like to see receive an anime, and while this doesn't necessarily lead to guarantees, some of the manga picked do end up receiving an anime later on. This is the sixth year they've done it, and the manga fans want to see in anime format the most is Nue's Exorcist, written and illustrated by Kōta Kawae.

The Sci-fi anime of the year has been decided as Kaiju No. 8, being one of the few sci-fi type anime to have come out and become popular. It cannot be said that Kaiju No. 8 winning the award at the 11th Anime Trending Awards was unexpected.

The only problem is that after Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was released, it set a high standard for what an anime adaptation should be like, and after that, Kaiju No. 8 feels underserving of being the best ‘sci-fi anime’ this year.
Good, but just not good enough
There are many genres of anime that are released every year and in recent times, the sci-fi genre is getting more diverse. With most authors mixing sci-fi with other magical or mystical tropes, it is getting harder to separate the anime into specific genres.

Kaiju No. 8 was a long-anticipated anime back in the Spring 2024 season. Kafka Hibino’s underdog story of following his dreams is inspiring, humorous, and frightening. Terrible monsters called Kaiju plague Japan, and Kafka hates them all until he becomes one. Season 1 was a wild ride as Kafka joined the Jakdf as a half-other Kaiju monster hiding in plain sight, ending with a bang as Kafka faced Isao Shinomiya in mortal combat to prove his worth.
Until the next season of Kaiju No. 8 arrives, anime audiences are looking for something to slake their thirst for similar tales. Stories about plucky underdogs and giant monsters aren’t hard to come by in anime, but there are certainly some stories that more accurately align with Kaiju No. 8’s specific brand of shonen. Whether fans are eager for the Kaiju fights or the mixture of genres, there are plenty of Kaiju No. 8...

Yuto Tsukuda, the creator of Weekly Shonen Jump's hit culinary comedyFood Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma, recently promoted an up-and-coming fellow Shonen Jump IP. The manga in question is Shinobi Undercover, a zany action-comedy revolving around a ninja and a high school girl.
Tsukuda's new recommendation was shared by @WSJmanga, an unofficial Shonen Jump news hub on X (formerly Twitter). Shinobi Undercover, which was created by Ippon Takegushi (story) and Santa Mitarashi (art), revolves around a ninja named Todaka who lives and works in modern-day Japan. One day, he is ordered to protect a cheerful but klutzy high school student named Aoi. In order to be a proper guard, he masquerades as Aoi's fellow classmate. According to the X post, Tsukuda is particularly fond of the "moe" (cute and/or innocent) attributes of the lead character.

Junji Ito is by far one of the most iconic names in horror manga, having created internationally renowned works such as Tomie, Uzumaki and Remina, among others. While many of his works are set in the realm of nightmarish fantasy, one of Ito's greatest fears is rooted firmly in reality -- the reality of artificial intelligence.
Over the past few years, AI technology has become far more sophisticated, allowing people to generate highly-realistic videos and short films within seconds. In a recent interview with Aera, Junji Ito recalled an incident where he was reminded of just how advanced AI has become. "Recently, I saw videos of a polar bear and a baby playing, and a woman stroking a shark in the ocean. There are still some inaccurate parts, but the accuracy will continue to improve..." Ito stated. Concerns along these lines have been voiced by countless other anime and manga creators,...

2025 got off to an excellent start with the return of shows like Solo Leveling and Dr. Stone, which, as always, have been phenomenal in their weekly schedule. However, the momentum did not continue until next month, as there were few other exciting premieres, and it seems like March will be similar, with only a handful of series coming out.
Certainly, the lineup includes an intriguing fantasy anime with a distinctive premise, and manga fans are eagerly waiting for its release. Additionally, next month, we will see the release of a few OVAs from prominent franchises like Kaiju No. 8 and Aldnoah Zero, so the overall conclusion should not be disappointing. So, without further ado, let's explore what anime has in store for fans in March 2025.

The 2020s have been an interesting era for the anime world so far. Shifting from the apparent dominance of shonen and isekai anime, the last five years have surprised viewers with their diversity. The new-gen titles have transcended the limitations of genre appeal and offered stories that have hooked fans across the board. Whether it’s a slice-of-life anime like Skip and Loafer or a historical drama like The Apothecary Diaries, the 2020s have proved that every genre has the potential to stand out.

Anime has been getting bigger every year, but 2024 was on another level. Massive new hits popped up, long-awaited sequels returned, and the industry kept breaking records. Shows like Kaiju No. 8, Dandadan, and Delicious in Dungeon had huge moments, pulling in new viewers like crazy. But one series completely dominated everything: Solo Leveling.
Produced by A-1 Pictures, this action-packed adaptation of Chugong’s web novel took off like nothing else. The story follows Sung Jinwoo, a hunter so weak he’s called ‘The Weakest Hunter of All Mankind’.
That changes fast when he gains a mysterious power that lets him level up endlessly. The setup sounds familiar, but Solo Leveling does it better than most. Jinwoo doesn’t just get stronger—he works for it, and that effort makes a difference. His attitude stays grounded, even as he reaches a level nobody thought possible.

It's easy for any anime fan to find a popular new title to try, such as action series like Kaiju No. 8 or romance anime like Komi Can't Communicate, but the real fun is finding hidden gems or half-forgotten anime. Those titles feel like a fresh treat when anime fans stumble upon them on the major streaming platforms, and even if those anime were never 10/10 classics, they are still rewarding to watch after being found in remote corners of the anime world.
Some of these hidden gem anime were once fairly mainstream but have since fallen into partial obscurity with the lack of new seasons, or got overshadowed by a bigger, more popular anime of a similar genre. All of them deserve another chance at popularity, so if enough anime fans track down these half-forgotten gems and try them out, these series might re-enter the conversation, at least for a brief time.

The anime industry is relatively notorious for being one of Japan's most physically exhausting work environments. This is a reality that Shinichiro Ikeda, the current president and CEO of Studio Deen, had to confront immediately after assuming control of the company.
In a recent interview conducted by Comic Natalie, Ikeda discussed his early years as CEO of Studio Deen, the company behind highly successful anime works such as Fate/Stay Night, Ranma 1/2 (1989) and Junji Ito Collection. Prior to Ikeda's work as head of Studio Deen, he worked primarily as a manager for Ima Group, a company specializing in collectible capsule toys, trading cards and other types of anime-themed merchandise. In order to expand Ima Group, Ikeda turned Studio Deen into an official subsidiary in 2008 with the idea of eventually creating tie-in shows and films for his company's products.

While there is no doubt in anime fans' minds that the original shonen "big three" had a tremendous influence on how future shonen anime titles were written, Tite Kubo's Bleach just might have the most influence of them all. Even if Bleach does the least sales of the original big three by the numbers, it still had an outsized influence on the shonen manga and anime that came after it.
There are two main reasons for that, one being the fact that at least two modern shonen hits were influenced primarily by Bleach, and the other being that many of Naruto's and One Piece's best storytelling elements are universal, not their own inventions. If the shonen big three merely popularized and reinforced time-honored tropes that came before them, then their influence should be measured in their own unique ideas. Fortnite has once again managed to surprise players with its latest crossover event, bringing the King of Monsters to the battle royale in a way that learns from past experiences. Players are frustrated with the increased complexity, glitches, and poor usability of the new quest tab.
