Few directors have had successful careers with as many wild swings throughout as David Gordon Green has. Green started out with indie classics like George Washington and All the Real Girls before shifting to broader comedies like Pineapple Express and Your Highness. This was followed by a series of films that couldn’t be easily put into a specific box, like Prince Avalanche, the Nicolas Cage-starring Joe, and the vastly underrated Jake Gyllenhaal drama, Stronger. In the last few years, Green has taken another sharp turn, creating a new Halloween trilogy and the failed horror reboot, The Exorcist: Believer. Yet even when prioritizing horror over the last few years, he’s found time to direct episodes of The Righteous Gemstones, just one of many television projects he’s worked on with his frequent collaborator, Danny McBride. Whenever you think you might have David Gordon Green figured out, he finds...

"Those delinquents hot-wired a carnival ride the other night." Hulu has revealed an fun trailer for a holiday comedy called Nutcrackers, the newest comedy directed by David Gordon Green. He spent a long time making his Halloween trilogy, but it's good to see him back directing more lively & funny films like he used to. Nutcrackers premiered at TIFF a few months ago and is opening direct-to-streaming on Hulu at the end of November in time for the holiday season. Dgg's Nutcrackers follows strait-laced and work obsessed Mike as he is suddenly thrust into being a caregiver for his rambunctious, orphaned nephews. In the most unlikely of places, 4 siblings find a loving shelter in an unexpected turn of circumstances. This endearing dramedy draws inspiration from actual events and deftly crafts a gripping story that unites everyone. Starring Ben Stiller, Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, Tim Heidecker, Toby Huss, Homer Janson, Ulysses Janson,...

David Gordon Green’s career is one of the most unpredictable in Hollywood. Since his masterful and celebrated debut George Washington, he’s not been shy about planting a flag in a wide variety of films––dramedies, gritty thrillers, franchise horror reboots, political satires, and stoner comedies among them. It’s been more than a decade since he has made a film that resembles anything like Nutcrackers. 2013’s Prince Avalanche was a peculiar, convention-straying work built on a loose screenplay that tended to meander and flow in various different directions, even touching Malickian territory in its poetic aims. It might not have wholly worked, but it did aim to buck conventions of a male-bonding film. Nutcrackers, on the other hand, follows them to the T, such that its unfolding feels ludicrously prescribed.

Emile Hirsch has had one of the more interesting careers of the many talented heartthrobs who arose at the turn of the millennium, and he's outlasted most of them. It's been two decades since his very good teen sex comedy, The Girl Next Door, and about 15 years since he won vast acclaim for Into the Wild, which kicked off an run of big films with great directors — Milk (Gus Vant Sant), Speed Racer (the Wachowski sisters), Taking Woodstock (Ang Lee), Killer Joe (William Friedkin), Savages (Oliver Stone), and Prince Avalanche (David Gordon Green) among them.
These days, four or five films are released with Emile Hirsch every single year; in fact, two of them came out on the same day: Prey and State of Consciousness. "We shot it almost three years ago. So I'm prolific, but this one did kind of get bottlenecked with another release," explained Hirsch about State of Consciousness.

Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.

As the aftereffects of the writers’ and actors’ strikes hit streaming in a big way, there’s not a lot of new content to offer subscribers early in 2024. Hulu still has some interesting things to offer in January, though.
The biggest new Hulu Original series in the new year is Death and Other Details, a locked room murder mystery starring Mandy Patinkin as Rufus Cotesworth, who is said to be the world’s greatest detective – at least in this universe. In the new series, Cotesworth comes to the rescue when an unfortunate soul is killed on lavish Mediterranean ocean liner, and he has to team up with the prime suspect (Violett Beane) to solve the crime.
The big Original movie premiere in January is Self Reliance, which follows a middle-aged dude (Jake Johnson) who gets randomly invited into a limo by Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg, and is soon offered...

Featuring a star-studded cast of Natalie Portman, Danny McBride, James Franco, Toby Jones, Justin Theroux, and Zoeey Deschanel, Your Highness is a comedic action-adventure-fantasy following the (mis)adventures of a royal crew on a mission to save a prince’s kidnapped bride. After debuting in The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys (2002), American actor Emile Hirsch found himself cast as the lead in numerous Hollywood productions throughout the following decade. He garnered widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike thanks to his work in Sean Penn's magnum opus Into the Wild (2007). Those two became frequent collaborators in the following year, both appearing in Milk (2008) by Gus Van Sant.
Those are the two most acclaimed films of Hirsch's career. But less hardcore audiences may associate Hirsch with films such as The Girl Next Door (2004), Lords of Dogtown (2005), and Alpha Dog (2006). Released in consecutive years, all three films featured Hirsch in the lead role, and they really ran the gamut of genre. Girl Next Door is a romantic comedy, while Alpha Dog goes down as a crime drama. They both hold up wonderfully today. But throughout those well-known releases, Hirsch has appeared in...

The Exorcist: Believer director David Gordon Green teased the process of creating the voice of the upcoming horror sequel’s demon.
Speaking with Empire, Green confirmed that they were auditioning multiple actors to voice the demon of The Exorcist: Believer. "We're in the demon-voice part of the process now, and we're exploring various processes," Green said. "The other day I brought five very, very different people into a room, with a microphone and asked them to say things. Maybe I want it to be each of these voices and more. Maybe I want the demon to be a lot of things." In the original 1973 movie, the demon was voiced by two actors, Ron Faber (Navy SEALs) and Oscar winner Mercedes McCambridge (All the King’s Men).

The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.
Watch the “Full Circle” trailer:
The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

It didn’t take all that long for Emile Hirsch to establish himself as one of the most competent young actors in Hollywood. Breaking through with The Girl Next Door before moving on to a remarkable lead in Into the Wild, the vastly underappreciated Speed Racer, a wonderful supporting turn in Milk, and playing Mario (we think…) in Prince Avalanche. And then the 2015 Sundance Film Festival rolled around…
Emile Hirsch was at Sundance with his movie Ten Thousand Saints – but proved to be anything but one, physically assaulting then-Paramount executive Dani Bernfeld (she’s now president of creative at Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity) and later pleading guilty to aggravated assault, spending just over two weeks in prison, paying nearly $5,000 to his victim and entering rehab. The rehab stems from a serious alcohol problem Hirsch had at the time, which he says played a significant role in the event.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania star Paul Rudd says he let his kid believe he worked at a movie theater for years. Rudd is known for his jovial antics, making a name for himself in comedies like Clueless, Anchorman, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. He has also proven himself in other genres, with dramatic turns in Diggers and Prince Avalanche. Rudd is now a leading man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring as Ant-Man, which allows him to flex his dramatic and comedic talents while mixing in comic book movie action.
While promoting his next superhero outing in Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Rudd appeared on Sunday Today With Willie Geist. He recounted his kids' misconception about his job after seeing him on a poster at a movie theater when they were young. Believing Rudd must simply work at the movie theater; the actor allowed it to persist for years, never correcting the humorous misunderstanding.

Thanks to his affable charm, charismatic screen presence, and seeming agelessness, Paul Rudd has become one of Hollywood's most endearing performers. Though primarily known for his comedic roles, Rudd was classically trained at the beginning of his career, studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts-West and the British Drama Academy at Oxford University. This academic background perhaps lends an emotional truth to Rudd's numerous sarcastic and sardonic characters.
While many actors can play a funny jerk, it's hard to bring warmth and empathy to that same archetype, a specific chemistry Rudd has made his own. Rudd is also known for his frequent collaborations with writer/producer/director Judd Apatow and comedians Michael Ian Black, David Wain, and Michael Showalter. Outside of acting, Rudd is also a producer and writer who has managed to keep both feet in television and film throughout his career. A grounded performer who also loves a good prank,...

Look, not every month is gonna be full of bangers. Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for March 2022 is extremely light but still has a couple of good options for streaming obsessives.
The biggest title this month is undoubtedly The Boys Presents: Diabolical on March 4. This series presents eight different stories set in The Boys‘ universe, all offered up by different writers. Since each of the eight mini-episodes are animated, it’s probably fair to say this is The Boys‘ Animatrix. Call it the “Anivought”.

Also arriving on March 4 is season 2 of the high concept comedy Upload. Set in a digital afterlife, this series created by The Office‘s Greg Daniels asks some big questions about where technology is taking us.

HBO announced that director, writer and producer Craig Zobel has extended his overall deal for three additional years.
Most recently, Zobel directed the 2021 HBO limited series “Mare of Easttown,” which stars Kate Winslet as a police detective in a Philadelphia suburb investigating the recent murder of one girl and year-long disappearance of another. The series, which also starred Julianne Nicholson, Jean Smart, Evan Peters and Guy Pearce, was nominated for the 2021 Emmy for outstanding limited series and Zobel was nominated for the award for limited or anthology series director.
Zobel is also known for serving as the sole director and showrunner of the CBS All Access miniseries “One Dollar,” a mystery thriller created by Jason Mosberg where a single dollar bill changing hands in a small town links a group of strangers to a murder. He directed “Akane no Mai,” the Season 2 “Westworld” episode famous for introducing a new park called Shogun World.

The summer movie season may be winding down, but HBO Max is keeping the movie ball rolling in September 2021. HBO Max’s list of new releases this month is heavy on the film side of things – both in library and original offerings.
Two Warner Bros. films of note arrive this month. The James Wan-directed horror tale Malignant premieres on Sept. 10 and is followed by Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho on Sept. 17. The next installment in Adventure Time: Distant Lands (which is kind of like a film series!) is titled Wizard City and opens the month on Sept. 2
Of course, it wouldn’t be a new month of HBO Max releases without some interesting evergreen Warner movie titles. Sept. 1 finds all eight Harry Potter movies returning to WarnerMedia’s streaming service. They will be accompanied by The Goonies, The Evil Dead, Cloverfield, and more. Later on in the month, Mortal Kombat (Sept.

Thank music supervisor DeVoe Yates for the enviable soundtrack that provides “Dickinson” with its anachronistic flourishes and likely has many viewers opening Shazam during the Apple TV+ series. Yates, who started his career working as a music supervisor on David Gordon Green projects like “Prince Avalanche” and “Eastbound and Down,” has worked with showrunner Alena Smith on “Dickinson” since the beginning. (Green himself directed two episodes in Season 1.)
“We knew what the sound was,” Yates tells Gold Derby about how he thought about the music selections going into Season 2. “Alena had talked to me at the end of Season 1 about what Season 2 was about — which gave me a lot of time to focus on the themes.”

It’s not that the knives were out, exactly. It’s just that the faint whiff of lame duckishness has hung over the Berlin Film Festival since the announcement of longtime director Dieter Kosslick’s 2019 departure, an impression that intensified during the last two editions, which were generally regarded as among the weakest the festival has recently seen.
So the lineup for 2020, the first Berlinale under the stewardship of ex-Locarno chief Carlo Chatrian and ex-German Films head Mariette Rissenbeek was always going to be subject to the closest scrutiny, not only to assess if the perceived decline in relevance and profile could be reversed, but also for what the selection might tell us about the future direction of a festival in flux. It is not an exaggeration to say that the soul of the Berlinale hangs in the balance – so it’s no small deal that the initial reaction to...

Every new Halloween film is another chance to deliver a sequel that won’t be shamefully retconned out of existence by later installments. This year’s release managed to pique fan interest early with the announcement that Jamie Lee Curtis will be reprising her role as legendary scream queen Laurie Strode. If her return means cleansing the series timeline of 2002’s hugely unpopular Halloween: Resurrection – which opened with the death of the franchise’s original heroine – then it’s a sacrifice that most of us will be willing to make.
That being said, we’re getting slight echoes of Resurrection’s reality TV storyline with the upcoming slasher, with a new synopsis suggesting that the murderous Michael Myers’ tenth outing (that’s eleven Halloween films minus the Myers-free third chapter) could possibly be taking something of a film-within-a-film, meta-horror approach:

Films about suburban warfare between snarling, territorial neighbors have been a popular subgenre since Buster Keaton’s day, but it comes as a surprise that Icelandic director Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurdsson packs so much emotional depth into Under the Tree (Undir trenu), his accomplished third feature. Each character resonates as a problematic individual whose foolishness escalates first into drama, then tragedy. The film’s near-perfect calibration between family drama and black comedy recalls the director’s earlier features, Paris of the North and Either Way (remade in the U.S. as Prince Avalanche), but this is the one in which Sigurdsson really projects a distinctive voice.

Well this already sounds amazing! Word from Deadline this weekend has suggested that Academy Award Nominees Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange, The Imitation Game) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Okja, Nocturnal Animals) are set to headline the new film from acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino (A Bigger Splash).
The new thriller has been written by Steven Knight, the screenwriter behind Allied and hit BBC show Peaky Blinders, and is set to start filming sometime in early 2018 with StudioCanal financing the film. The script reportedly concerns two friends, “one a business titan and the other a journalist”, and it is also said to include a “strong female lead” that is still to be cast.

Emile Hirsch keeps himself busy these days, but he’s not always making movies. The 31-year-old actor recently finished the first draft of a novel, completed a screenplay, and spends a lot of time painting still lifes in his backyard.
Meanwhile, he’s acting in a wider range of projects than ever before. A versatile performer known for immersing himself in his roles, he currently stars opposite Brian Cox in the minimalist horror-drama “The Autopsy of Jane Doe,” opening December 21, and has a range of projects — from a buddy comedy with Jk Simmons to a sweeping China-set period drama with an otherwise Asian cast—scheduled for 2017.
“The work itself is the goal,” he said, settling into Brooklyn eatery Sisters after a long day promoting “Jane Doe” in Manhattan. He was in the midst of a monthlong break from the novel, following the advice of Stephen King’s “On Writing,” his favorite guidebook.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question:
Last Friday saw the release of Garth Davis’ “Lion,” the musical score for which is the gorgeous result of a collaboration between two giants of the neo-classical movement, Dustin O’Halloran and Hauschka. With that in mind, we asked our panel of critics to name their favorite film score of the 21st Century.

Rough House Pictures, the joint venture between David Gordon Green, Jody Hill and Danny McBride, announced today that they have signed on as executive producers of the new documentary “Fraud,” ahead of its Los Angeles premiere at the AFI Festival next week. Subverting the Unexpected
At the end of the 20th century, Bobcat Goldthwait’s legacy read like a cheap joke: He was a screaming comedian from the eighties best known as Zed in the “Police Academy” franchise who once tried at his hand at directing a movie (“Shakes the Clown”). Those achievements barely skimmed the surface of Goldthwait’s ability, as the ensuing years made clear, when Goldthwait completely transformed his career into one of the most provocative American filmmakers working today. With the microbudget “Sleeping Dogs Lie” (aka “Stay”), Goldthwait showed his potential to funnel taboo subject matters into oddly touching, relatable human dramas, a proclivity he kicked up to a whole new level with the subversive black comedy “World’s Greatest Dad,” which features Robin Williams in one of his all-time great roles.
Goldthwait has kept innovating, with each new movie offering a fresh perspective on the naive assumptions...

When assuming the high profile mantle of a beloved superhero, it is important for an actor to balance these franchise instalments with work of a very different kind, in order to remain relevant and sustain a career beyond spandex. This seems to be a lesson that Ant-Man’s Paul Rudd is taking seriously – not least with the news that he has been cast as the lead in the upcoming period drama, The Catcher Was A Spy.
Adapted by Academy Award nominee Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan) from the bestselling 1994 book, The Catcher Was A Spy: The Mysterious Life Of Moe Berg by Nicholas Dawidoff, the film will be directed by Ben Lewin (The Sessions), and will feature Paul Rudd in the role of Moe Berg – linguist, lawyer, baseball player and spy. The story tells the tale of an extraordinary life, which saw Berg born in New York City in...

Ant-Man and Alan Partridge are set to join forces for a second time in An Ideal Home – a new comedy drama, written and directed by Andrew Fleming (Hamlet 2, Dick). Marvel’s newest star, Paul Rudd, and British star Steve Coogan already starred opposite each other in 2011’s Our Idiot Brother, but this latest collaboration will see the pair united in marriage.
Coogan will play a famous celebrity, while Rudd will play his more reclusive, shy spouse. Their extravagant, public lifestyle places their relationship under considerable strain, which is amplified by the unexpected arrival of a young man claiming to be the grandson Coogan never realized he had. With his grandson in dire straits, with nowhere else to go, the couple agree to welcome him into their home, in the secret hope that his presence will heal the rifts forming in their marriage.
The film is currently being packaged for sale by Fortitude International,...

Exclusive: Icelandic companies plan joint slate of Icelandic and English-language films including Óskar Jónasson’s Habeus Corpus.
Icelandic production companies Truenorth and Mystery are partnering on an ambitious slate of eight films to be shot over the next five years.
“Both companies were looking to expand into more European co-productions so we decided to join forces,” said Kristinn Thordarson, head of production at Truenorth.
David Oskar Olafsson of Mystery added that the slate’s eight productions are five in English and three in Icelandic.
“We had the same goals and ambitions,” Olafsson said “By joining teams, we felt we could be working on broader profile films.”
Leifur B Dagfinnsson of Truenorth said that both companies would continue to work on their own projects as well as the joint slate, and they would continue to have separate offices in Reykjavik.
The plan is to have eight to 10 films on the joint slate continually.

Read More: Project of the Day: 'Like Me' Takes on Teen Social Media Obsession Back in March 2013, Indiewire named the indie thriller "Like Me" as its Project of The Month. Almost three years later, we can now share a first look at the end result, which recently completed principal photography. The film is a collaboration between production companies Glass Eye Pix ("House of the Devil," "Wendy and Lucy") and Dogfish Pictures ("Compliance," "Prince Avalanche," and "Like Crazy"), who funded the project as part of their Dogfish Accelerator program. "Like Me" is the directorial debut of screenwriter and filmmaker Rob Mockler. The plot takes on our society's ever-increasing addiction to technology. Addison Timlin ("Fallen") plays Kiya, a discontented loner who documents her own crime spree through social media, which provokes a disturbing Internet following. Discussing the...

David Gordon Green’s listless character study Manglehorn, starring a pleasantly unassuming Al Pacino arrives on Blu-ray shortly before his next (and unfortunately unpleasant) feature Our Brand is Crisis hits theaters. Premiering in competition at the 2014 Venice Film Festival, Pacino’s demure performance was the title’s championed aspect in an underwhelming follow-up to the Green’s superb duo of 2013 titles, Joe and Prince Avalanche. Unfortunately, the IFC acquisition performed as underwhelmingly at the box office as it did with a lot of critics. Although Green has systematically been injecting incredibly prolific actors into indie-inspired projects, the results often seem compromised in comparison to earlier titles in his filmography.
Green continues his examination of masculine relationships in an adaptation from first time screenwriter Paul Logan. Another Texas set endeavor, Green’s use of a forlorn and raggedly unhappy Al Pacino is definitely the film’s greatest asset, but isn’t...

“When politics is treated as a game, everybody loses.”
I think Warren Beatty said that. Or someone else. Or I just made it up. Either way, it seems like the type of false quote that would be appreciated by Jane Bodine, the central character of Our Brand is Crisis, played by Sandra Bullock. The film is a fictionalized story based on or inspired by the 2005 documentary of the same name, directed by Rachel Boynton.
The doc depicted the American political strategies employed in the 2002 Bolivian national election. In this new story, Bodine is the key political consultant hired by the campaign of former president Pedro Castillo to help him overcome his 28-point deficit in the presidential race — the scenario is the same, but fictional versions of the participants are inserted.
Every political movie tends to be treated as though it’s trying to make some sort of statement about the modern political process,...
