Part monster movie, part romantic comedy, part feminist manifesto: Nacho Vigalondo’s “Colossal” is a lot of things. But Anne Hathaway’s first impression of it was much simpler than that.
“I think the exact email I got from my agent was, ‘This might be too weird, but it might be the right weird,'” the actress recently told IndieWire when asked about her first introduction to the project. “I read it and it felt like it the right weird.”
An innovative blend of high concept sci-fi and romcom tropes, “Colossal” gives “Kong: Skull Island” a run for its money as the disaster movie of the year, which is why it’s somewhat of a shock to consider that it almost didn’t get made at all. Vigalondo first gained exposure among genre fans for his labyrinthine time-travel comedy “Timecrimes,” but it has taken years for him to make a more widely-accessible crowdpleaser.

In its opening act, Nacho Vigolando’s newest genre-subverting feature, “Colossal,” plays like the world’s most unexpected “The Devil Wears Prada” sequel. Imagine if Anne Hathaway’s Andy Sachs didn’t have that last-act change of heart, compelling her to reject the empty offerings of Miranda Priestly, and instead stayed in Paris with her steely-eyed mentor and clawed her way to the top of the fashion journalism heap, one stiletto-bolstered step at a time. Hathaway’s character in “Colossal,” a burnout alcoholic writer named Gloria, could be Andy just a few years on: fabulous, broke, exceedingly wasted.
That’s where “Colossal” starts. That’s hardly where it ends.
Vigolando’s film introduces us to Gloria at her lowest ebb, unveiling an anti-heroine for the ages (and also the kind of “strong female character” that so many Hollywood movies tend to lack) and then twists her resurrection story into some mighty unexpected shapes.

Starring Farhan Akhtar, Shraddha Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli, Shashank Arora, Prachi Desai, Kumud Mishra

There is a life-defining sequence in the early part of this stylishly cut film where the excellent Shashank Arora, playing a young struggling musician, a Sarod player in this day and age if you must know, pleads with the supremely accomplished Kumud Mishra playing a rigid musician, for a hearing. A request that falls on deaf years because Guruji is a purist who believes music must not be tampered with to create a contemporary sound.
Ironically this is what Rock On 2, a worthy resoundingly successful sequel to the 2008 genre-defining musical, attempts. It breaks barrier of sound and drama to give us an experience that moves the feet and the soul, sometimes in unison. From the first frame when we hear ‘Killer Drums’ Kd(the very endearing Purab Kohli) trying successfully...

Geoffrey Rush is getting back into biopic mode. The actor — who won an Oscar for his portrayal of pianist David Helfgott in “Shine” and has also played the Marquis de Sade and other historical figures — will star as Albert Einstein in National Geographic Channel’s anthology series “Genius.” He’ll be joined in that role by Johnny Flynn (“Song One,” “Clouds of Sils Maria”), who’s starring as the physicist in his younger years, with Ron Howard directing the pilot. The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news.

Creed continues to be a box office success and a favorite with audiences and critics. Globally Ryan Coogler’s film has passed the $100 million mark since its initial opening this fall.
The film reunites Coogler with his Fruitvale Station star Michael B. Jordan as the son of Apollo Creed, and explores a new chapter in the Rocky story, starring Academy Award nominee Sylvester Stallone in his iconic role.
For the director, there was no question that Creed would be set in Philadelphia, where it all began. And for the filmmakers, there was no doubt that principal photography would be accomplished there as well. In order to bridge the two films artistically, Coogler brought together the talented creative team of costume designers Emma Potter (“Song One”) and Antoinette Messam (“Orphan”) and his “Fruitvale Station” team: editors Michael P. Shawver and Claudia Castello; production designer Hannah Beachler; and composer Ludwig Goransson.

After making her producing debut with this year's Song One, Anne Hathaway has signed on to star in and produce the sci-fi comedy The Shower. The project isn't set up at a studio quite yet, with The Wrap reporting that producers first plan on finding a director and other stars before taking it out to studios. The Shower was written by Jac Schaeffer, which landed on The Blacklist as one of the industry's most well-regarded un-produced screenplays.
The Shower starts at a baby shower, where guests witness a meteor shower. The male guests all start transforming into aliens, as the women are forced to fight for their own survival, and save the world as well. No details were given for the role that Anne Hathaway will take on, and it isn't known how many supporting roles need to be filled.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies We know this won't be the last we hear of The Hobbit as there will have to be the release of the extended edition and then there are box sets to consider, but we are getting closer to the end of our association with Middle Earth and it actually reminds me, what is Peter Jackson going to do nowc

Some good news for a great film out of the Sundance Film Festival. Director Jim Strouse, who last played Sundance with the films The Winning Season and Grace Is Gone, returned this year with a film called People, Places, Things starring Jemaine Clement as a graphic artist/illustrator. The charming film was quite enjoyable, I would actually recommend it and I hope people get a chance to see it, a very amusing little romantic comedy. Deadline is reporting that up-and-coming distributor The Film Arcade has picked up People, Places, Things for a Us release, sometime this summer. The indie distributor is also releasing Sundance faves A.C.O.D., Song One, The Voices, They Came Together and Dinosaur 13. So keep an eye out. People, Places, Things stars Jemaine Clement along with Stephanie Allynne, Regina Hall, Jessica Williams, Derrick Arthur and Celia Au. I saw the film at Sundance and enjoyed it quite a bit,...

The 32-year-old actress says she's impressed by her dog's smarts, admits when she's wrong, and a few other things when she chatted with People this week about "one last thing" … Last time I was injuredMy dog had minor surgery, and she had to wear a cone. She's really smart, so she figured out if she dug the cone into my leg, eventually I would take it off because I couldn't stand it anymore. She really bruised the front of my shin with one jab.

Starred Up Starred Up didn't make my top ten of 2014, but it was undoubtedly one of the better movies of last year and the best movie starring Jack O'Connell who is likely to get another career boost soon with '71 as Unbroken clearly didn't make his name known to the masses. I definitely recommend you search this one out, just too bad it looks like it is only getting a DVD release.
John Wick Solid little actioner and a perfect movie to watch at home. I'm not sure you need to buy it, but definitely give it a rent.

Final Update, Sunday Am: Warner Bros. is reporting that American Sniper will raise its domestic cume to $200.1M through Sunday after a massive $64.4M weekened at 3,705 theaters, the third-highest weekend ever in January, behind Sniper’s opening last weekend, and Avatar’s third Fss of $68.5M.
That figure, should it hold into tomorrow, marks a mere 28-percent slip – the best second-week hold for a wide release ever for a film that debuted with more than $85M. Previous to this, the best big debuts to hold an audience were 2004’s Shrek 2 (down 33 percent in its second frame) and 2002’s Spider-Man (down 38 percent). American Sniper is marching toward $300M, a mark only six Warner Bros. films have passed.
“Many exhibitors are hearing from their theater managers that the infrequent moviegoers who go only two to three times a year, are coming out to see this movie,” said Warner Bros. distribution chief Dan Fellman.

She's an actress, a singer, an Academy Award winner, and now Anne Hathaway can add producer to her growing list of credits. Her producing debut (a family affair as husband Adam Schulman is a co-producer) Song One is a heartfelt, indie drama about family, relationships, and just how much music affects our lives.
And if producing for the first time wasn't enough of a challenge, she also chose a writer/director making her feature film debut. Hathaway previously met Katie Barker-Froyland when she worked as an assistant director on Hathaway's hit film The Devil Wears Prada (2006). But it was another director Jonathan Demme, who brought them together. During the Q & A that followed the screening at The Museum of the Moving Image, Hathaway revealed that her role as Kym in Demme's Rachel Getting Married ranks as her favorite. Has the world gotten nicer since 2013? Anne Hathaway does not think so.
In Song One, the actress took on a role that she really connected with and it made her reassess how she looked at life.
"For me, this movie is about a girl getting out of her own way and getting out of her own head. I was in the very early stages of that journey in my own life," she told the Associated Press. "It's not like the world has gotten nicer since 2013. I think it's about looking beyond your knee-jerk judgment about places and people and professions and actually experiencing something with an open heart."

This interview originally ran during last year's Sundance Film Festival.] It's hard to believe, but it's been over a year since Anne Hathaway last graced the screen in "Les Misérables," the film that went on to win the actress her first Oscar. Since singing her way to glory as Fantine, Hathaway has maintained a low public profile, working on Christopher Nolan's hugely anticipated fall blockbuster "Interstellar" and diving into her first job as a producer on the low budget indie "Song One," in which she also stars. The film (written and directed by newcomer Kate Barker-Froyland) marks the first of Hathaway's to screen at the Sundance Film Festival. In the drama, Hathaway stars as Franny, an anthropologist who returns home to New York when an accident...

Title Track: Barker-Froyland’s Cloying Debut Plays Familiar Tune
“Sad song at night, hipster’s delight” should be the opening line in Kate Barker-Froyland’s mournful, musically inclined debut, Song One, headlined with wide-eyed sincerity by Anne Hathaway. There have been several indie music-driven, understated dramas recently, and the title premiered alongside Stuart Murdoch’s equally undernourished God Help the Girl at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Though Barker-Froyland at least canvasses the emotions that accompany the tragic situation at the dramatic heart of her film, its dramatic integrity seems to take a backseat to a more rewarding soundtrack from Johnny Flynn, who also stars. But one can languish in the strumming of melancholy inspiring folk music only for so long before this feels like a crutch that takes the place of material lacking in the narrative.

John Guleserian has previously shot films including "Like Crazy," "Breathe In," "About Time," "Song One" and "Equals." With "The Overnight," he captures the intimacy and awkwardness of a family "playdate" in Los Angeles that gets increasingly weirder as the night progresses. What camera and lens did you use? We shot with two Canon C500's with Zeiss Superspeed Lenses, as well as a Canon 5D Mkiii with a Lomography 80mm Petzval Lens, and a GoPro for some underwater shots. This was the most difficult shot on my movie -- and this is how I pulled it off: It's hard to determine what the most difficult shot was on any movie. There is a montage in the middle of the movie where all four of our characters are in a swimming pool. We knew we wanted to have some underwater shots as part of this montage, but I was worried about...

One of the great pleasures of experiencing music, especially genres such as pop, or - more pertinently for this review - indie folk, lies in the familiarity of its forms. Like comfort food for the ears, they follow well-established stylistic contours with often very slight variations. Yet they reliably hit emotional sweet spots that allow you to forgive, or even overlook entirely, the fact that they offer few surprises or intellectual challenges.Much the same can be said of Song One, the debut feature of writer-director Kate Barker-Froyland. As the title indicates, it's a music-themed film, so much so that it's practically a full-on musical, only lacking the leads breaking out into fully choreographed performances. The musical mode here is earnest, heartfelt, New York-based indie folk....

Anne Hathaway's new film, Song One, was a passion project in more ways than one. Not only did the heartfelt indie film shoot on a tight schedule with a meager budget, but Anne's husband, Adam Shulman, served as a coproducer with her on the drama. We talked to Anne about what she learned about her significant other by going into business with him and the songs that make her think about the early days of her romance. She also copped to being in an a cappella group in college - watch to find out which song she auditioned with! Song One is in theaters and on demand starting Friday.

Anne Hathaway.s new film, Song One, is an emotional tour-de-force that revolves around one sister.s attempt to reconnect with her brother, who is in a coma. But during the actress. promotional effort on Wednesday night.s episode of The Daily Show made it sound as if Song One is a laugh-a-minute comedy. That.s because she got the giggles and couldn.t stop chuckling during her discussion with Jon Stewart. (The laughs starting to come out about 2:20 into the clip) Anne Hathaway.s inappropriate bout of the giggles came as she tried to explain the plot to Song One, and, as you can see, it didn.t go too well. A little over two minutes after Jon Stewart had introduced Hathaway to his audience, the actress found herself chuckling. And she didn't stop. In fact, she laughed her way through the remainder of her Daily Show interview.

Anne Hathaway just can’t stop giggling!!
This is a very different Anne then we’re all used to seeing in interviews.
The actress, who usually is very composed when promoting her films, was unable to contain herself during an appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. When she went on to promote her new film, Song One, she and Jon broke into uncontrollable laughter just minutes into the discussion of the plot.
News: Anne Hathaway on Finding Out People Hate Her: 'Even Now I Can Feel the Shame'
Though, the timing couldn't have been worse. It came right after the 32 year-old explained how her character’s brother gets hit by a car and is in a coma after they haven’t spoken for six months.
The audience, initially caught off-guard, weren't quite sure what to do. But eventually everyone was in giggle fits when the laughter became too infectious.

Continuing her massive media tour, Anne Hathaway headed over to “The Daily Show” to chat with Jon Stewart about her new movie “Song One” on Wednesday (January 21).
And while the “Dark Knight Rises” star didn’t exactly set out to be hilarious, her description of the plot causes uncontrolled laughing for both herself and Stewart- “I play a young anthropologist getting her PhD in Morocco. Something happened to her when she was a teenager that made her grow up too fast so she became an adult very quickly very young.”
Hathaway continued, “And so she never kind of explored any part of her artistic side. And then her little brother, who is 19, calls her up to say, ‘I’m dropping out of college to become a musician,’ and she doesn’t react well. And they hadn’t spoken for six months. And then he gets hit by a car and is in a coma.

"Song One" is an 88 minute Brooklyn summer romance-indie-hipster drama starring Oscar winner Anne Hathaway (Franny), and West London folk singer, Johnny Flynn (James Forester). Franny, who is studying for her PhD in anthropology in Morocco, receives a call from her mother stating that her brother, Henry, has been hit by a car crossing the street, is in a coma in the hospital, and asks that she return to NYC.
Franny visits her brother in the hospital often, and by searching through his belongings, listening to songs he has played, musical videos he has recorded, and journal entries he has written, gets to know what his likes are and where his interests lie. She stumbles upon an unused ticket for a musician that he really respects, James Forester, at the Bowery Ballroom, 6 Delancey Street on June 1, 2013. She attends the show, and approaches the acoustic guitarist/violinist at the end, asking him if he might have known Henry personally. James did not know Henry personally, however, demonstrates empathy, and visits Franny, while she is visiting Henry in the hospital.
Franny and James begin reliving her brother’s Williamsburg musical lifestyle, while recording sounds of NYC that he might be familiar with, meanwhile, continuing to visit him in a coma, playing the recordings for him, and getting to know one another on a deeper, more personal level.

We all get the giggles sometimes—even Anne Hathaway, who couldn't stop laughing on The Daily Show Wednesday night after going over the very, very depressing summary of her upcoming film, Song One. "They haven't spoken for six months," she said on the show, describing the relationship between her and her brother in the film, "and then he gets hit by a car and is in a coma." She and Jon Stewart then looked at each other and burst out laughing in a fit that went on for about a minute. Watch Stewart try to turn their attention back to the serious movie.

Last night on The Daily Show, Anne Hathaway and Jon Stewart got a true case of the giggles. You've been there: Something happens, and for some reason, it is the funniest possible thing, so you laugh, and then the fact that you laugh makes you laugh more, and you literally cannot stop yourself. In this case, it was all set off by how incredibly serious Hathaway's new movie, Song One, sounds, and how casually she describes the plot to Jon. This proves that anything can be funny if you say it over and over again, even if it's describing your brother getting into a car accident and falling into a coma.

Hathaway, 32, stars in the new film Song One, and one of her collaborators just so happened to be Shulman, who co-produced the indie drama from director Kate Barker-Froyland. "But I loved working with him. He's really good at this, and he's a wonderful producer.
