Netflix and Arte’s musical show “Le Monde de Demain” (“The World of Tomorrow”) took the top prize in the International Competition of television festival Series Mania at the event’s awards ceremony Friday.

The series, created by Katell Quillévéré, Hélier Cisterne – both also directing – Vincent Poymiro and David Elkaïm, takes a look at the birth of the French hip-hop movement in the 1980s. Made with the collaboration of Laurent Rigoulet and the participation of Kool Shen, JoeyStarr and DJ Détonateur S, it was described by the organizers as “a personal chronicle about a Parisian suburban youth reaching adulthood, claiming its own space in a new France, a country to reinvent.”

Only six months after its 2021 edition, Series Mania will be back with a sprawling selection, including the world premieres of Michael Hirst’s “Billy The Kid” (pictured), the Israeli series “Fire Dance” and rap-music-themed French show “Le monde de demain.”

Underscoring the large presence of streamers within the roster, Series Mania will kick off with Netflix’s “Standing Up,” a new comedy series from “Call My Agent” creator and showrunner Fanny Herrero; while Disney Plus’ “Oussekine,” about a tragic case of police brutality in France, will close the festival.

The lineup boasts 58 series spanning from 21 countries. These were chosen from 331 series. The international jury, whose president will be announced later, will comprise of German actor Christian Berkel (“Downfall”), Franco-Belgian actor Cécile de France, Israeli actor Shira Haas (“The Unorthodox”), Turkish creator and director Berkun Oya (“Bir Baskadir”) and French singer-songwriter and model Yseult.

An official trailer has been released for Brian Avenet-Bradley's (Dark Remains) horror feature, Malignant. The trailer shows one man tormented by both addiction and a pseudo-doctor and sadist. Malignant stars Gary Cairns (Daylight's End) and Brad Dourif. Cairns plays Allex, one man trying to get his life back together and Dourif plays the crazed doctor. The 10th Annual Another Hole in the Head genre film festival is currently under way in San Francisco, and one of the highlights is the December 14th screening of The Night Visitor.

Running November 29-December 19 at the Balboa and New People Theaters, this annual festival of horror, sci-fi, dark fantasy, and exploitation cinema defies convention to bring viewers the most outrageous genre films from both emerging and established filmmakers. It's three weeks of celluloid mayhem not usually found in your local cineplex.
