A few days ago, the horror community was shaken when news broke about Saw XI possibly being canceled. While the information was vague, the unknown source sadly reported this with afair amount of certainty. Now, one of the film's writers has shared more details about the possible cancellation while also revealing plot details about the latest sequel in the Saw franchise. Apparently, John Kramer was going to help frustrated citizens fight whatever they needed to fight against.

As soon as Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise (you can read our review Here), was released in September of 2023, franchise producers were already talking about the potential of a Saw XI. The sequel was officially announced in December of ’23, and while it was originally aiming for a September 2024 release, it was quickly pushed back to September 26, 2025, with Saw X director Kevin Greutert set to return to the helm, working from a screenplay by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, who previously wrote Saw parts 4 through 7 (with Thomas Fenton also getting a story credit on Saw IV). Yesterday, we heard that the film has been cancelled due to an apparently unresolvable disagreement between the producers – and now, writer Melton has confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that he hasn’t heard anything more about the project since the first draft of the script was turned in almost a year ago.

The future of Saw XI remains uncertain as the next installment in the long-running horror franchise has been stalled due to managerial disputes between Lionsgate and the film’s producers. Initially slated for a September 2024 release, the film’s delay has left fans speculating about its fate, with no clear resolution in sight.
Patrick Melton, one of the screenwriters for Saw XI, revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the film has made “zero progress” since he and writing partner Marcus Dunstan submitted a draft in the spring of 2024. “We haven’t heard anything since May,” Melton stated. “It’s stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There are higher-level things at play.”
While creative disputes have been a common obstacle in Hollywood productions, the delay of Saw XI appears to stem from internal conflicts between the franchise’s producers and Lionsgate executives.

'Saw XI' has "stalled" with writers kept in the dark for almost a year.Progress on the latest instalment in the long running horror franchise has "stalled" with no updates for screenwriting partners Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan since they presented a draft in spring 2024.Melton - who has been involved in the film series since 2007 entry 'Saw IV' - told The Hollywood Reporter: "We haven’t heard anything since May.“It’s stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. Saw XI won’t be arriving in 2025, and there are doubts over the entire future of the movie (and franchise). More right here.
Turns out that if you want to finally defeat Jigsaw once and for all, you don’t need a deadly weapon, you just need a boardroom. After the success of the well-received Saw X, Lionsgate was quickly moving towards Saw XI. It was announced at speed, and the assumption was that it’d be turned around in a year, two at most.
However, screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan wrote a draft of the screenplay that was sent in to the studio around this time last year. As Melton now tells The Hollywood Reporter, he’s heard nothing from the studio about Saw XI since May of last year. “It’s stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else.

If you ever found yourself screaming at the characters in a horror film for making dumb decisions, the Saw franchise flips the script. Here, the victims don’t just run into a dark alleyway with a dead end when there’s a serial killer chasing them, instead, they find themselves in horrifying traps where every move means life or death. Guess there is just something about watching people struggle against almost impossible odds…in a twisted kind of way.

Saw XI appears to be struggling to survive.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned “zero progress” has been made on the next installment since writing partners Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan turned in a draft back in spring of 2024.
“We haven’t heard anything since May,” says Saw XI screenwriter Melton, who has been involved with the franchise since 2007’s Saw IV. “It’s stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There’s higher-level things at play.”
In late December 2023, Lionsgate announced that franchise mainstay Kevin Greutert was attached to direct Saw XI for a September 2024 release, but the studio ultimately delayed it by a year to Sept. 26, 2025. Greutert helmed Saw X, which revitalized the franchise when it hit theaters in September 2023 and collected $112 million at the global box office. The next movie in the Saw franchise, Saw XI, has reportedly been canceled. The horror series, created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell, was supposed to continue in 2025. However, sources now say that the project is “totally dead.”
This news comes as a shock to fans. Saw X, released in 2023, was a big success. It received good reviews and made a lot of money at the box office. Unlike previous sequels, it took place between the first two films. This allowed the story to focus on John Kramer, played by Tobin Bell. Many people consider him the best character in the series.
According to Bloody Disgusting, problems started in January 2024. Their source said, “Everything went sideways in January 2024 … the producers started fighting.” They also mentioned that Lionsgate, the studio behind Saw, “didn’t have anyone to smooth over the disagreement.“
Before this, there were signs that Saw XI was still happening.

As soon as Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise (you can read our review Here), was released in September of 2023, franchise producers were already talking about the potential of a Saw XI. Now, our friends at Bloody Disgusting are reporting that we might not see another sequel in the Saw franchise at all, as a source “close to the production” has informed them that Saw XI has been cancelled!

It's game over for Saw fans. According to an exclusive new report from Bloody Disgusting, the eleventh film in the franchise is dead and no longer moving forward, so we aren't going to see Jigsaw setting traps anytime soon, or even another showdown between John Kramer and Cecilia as hinted at by the end of Saw X.
The outlet quotes a source who was reportedly close to production for Saw XI, which was slated to release this September after being delayed a year.
"It’s totally dead. It’s 100% over. Almost a year now.”
The source claims that infighting on set caused the film to eventually breakdown, kicking off way back in January 2024, when one person wanted to "plow forward" to make the film, and the other stalling production.
As devastating as this update is, it's not all that surprising. Rumors have been circling about a troubled production for months now.

It might just be the end of an era for one of horror's most enduring franchises. Despite being announced well over a year ago by Lionsgate, it looks like "Saw XI" might not be happening anymore. What's more, we could be looking at major changes for the franchise in the future, with anything from a complete halt to new movies or a reboot in the cards, depending on how things shake out.
According to a new report from Bloody Disgusting, "Saw XI" is "totally dead," according to an anonymous source close to the production. "It's 100% over. Almost a year now," the source added. "Saw XI" was confirmed by Lionsgate in December 2023, with a September 2024 release date initially announced. It was later delayed to September 2025, though that was believed to be owed to the SAG and WGA strikes that ground Hollywood to a halt in 2023.

Saw XI has reportedly been cancelled, with production on the horror sequel having halted over a year ago, according to a new update about the movie. Saw XI was confirmed not long after Saw X was released, the tenth installment of the gore-splattered horror franchise which earned critical and commercial success. The sequel was originally scheduled for release on September 27, 2024, before being pushed back an entire year to September 26, 2025. Since then, there's been no news on what to expect from the eleventh movie in the series.
Now, according to Bloody Disgusting, Saw XI has quietly been cancelled, with a source revealing production hasn't been moving forward for "[a]lmost a year now." The report claims infighting among producers stalled production in January 2024, with one trying to "plow forward" on the movie while another tried halting its progress. Lionsgate didn't have anyone to step in and negotiate a path forward, effectively leading to the sequel's cancellation.

Jigsaw's games are over, at least for now.
Per Bloody Disgusting, it's been reported that the upcoming sequel Saw XI has been canceled. The sequel was previously announced for a theatrical release on Sept. 27, 2024, before it was then delayed to Sept. 26, 2025. While the movie's fate hasn't been officially confirmed, the new report quotes an unnamed source close to the production as saying, "It's totally dead. It's 100% over. Almost a year now."
The new report also noted that the source stated, "Everything went sideways in January 2024... the producers started fighting." One of the producers reportedly attempted to "plow forward" with production despite the friction, while the other "put up roadblocks," ultimately stalling the movie from getting started. As for why Lionsgate executives didn't get involved in an attempt to get Saw XI back on track, the source added, “[Lionsgate] didn’t have anyone to smooth over the disagreement.”

Lionsgate CFO James Barge said today the company is on track to close the separation of Lionsgate Studios and Starz by mid-to-late April.
During a Q&a at the Morgan Stanley media conference, he said the split has been in the works for a long time but was held up by one thing or another.
“We didn’t know there would be a pandemic, writer strikes and and then, somewhere along the way, we made a fantastic acquisition of eOne. So there have been quite a few things. But we are definitely there. We’re on we’re on track for a mid to late April close,” Barge said.

Paranormal Activity etched its name in horror lore as one of those rare marketing moments that altered the very fabric of the genre as we knew it. An undisputable monster in a genre of monsters. A cultural phenomenon that stood for everything we loved about the genre. A movie that made you feel something in a way only horror can provide. Some went home and turned on all the lights in the house. Some scoffed, proudly unbothered by its attempts to creep them out. But everyone saw it. Everyone talked about it. Most of them thirsty for more home video shenanigans. How the hell do you follow that up? This… is what happened to Paranormal Activity 2.
In 2007, Paranormal Activity made close to $200 million dollars on a $15,000 budget. Meaning the Corleone’s themselves could have put a severed horse head in the bed of every executive at Paramount Pictures to stop...

Its contents were hidden somewhere in the miles of tunnels under the fortress. Jigsaw may have set his last trap, as the Saw franchise finds itself in trouble amid the delayed release of the next sequel, Saw XI. A new report by Scream Magazine claims that, according to “a reliable source,” the eleventh Saw movie has come across several problems, including issues behind the scenes with the studio, Lionsgate, and problems with returning star Tobin Bell.
Saw XI was initially given a release date of September 27, 2024. However, this was quickly pushed back to September 26, 2025, with Bell later confirmed to return as the infamous serial killer John Kramer, Aka Jigsaw. The source tells Scream Magazine “that it looks highly unlikely that Saw XI will meet its new September 2025 release date. It has been hinted that there are significant problems behind the scenes, and “unless something major changes,” Saw XI won’t be coming next fall.”

Losses at Lionsgate shrank during its third quarter, while revenue at the studio behind “Saw” and “The Hunger Games” dipped slightly. The entertainment company cited the box office success of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” as well as record earnings from licensing its library of movies and shows for the improved fiscal picture. It also noted that it had started to recover from the Hollywood labor strikes of 2023 that brought production to a standstill.
For the three month period ending in December, revenue was roughly flat at $970.5 million, down from the $975.1 million that Lionsgate reported in the year-ago period. Operating income topped out at $35.8 million compared to a loss of $43.5 million in the year-ago quarter. Net losses attributable to Lionsgate shareholders came in at $21.9 million or $0.09 diluted net loss per share. That compared favorably to the loss of $107.4 million that Lionsgate reported a year ago.

Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, in collaboration with the Adobe Foundation — is a data-driven ranking that identified the 150 most inclusive films from 2019 to 2023 and ranks a single year’s films across gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability and age representation.
“Our goal with the Inclusion List is to celebrate those who are showcasing and working with exceptional talent from all backgrounds,” stated Dr. Smith in a press release announcing the researchers’ findings. “In the second year of its release, the newest iteration of the Inclusion List spotlights films, filmmakers, and distributors who clearly demonstrate that inclusion...

Includes minor Spoilers for The Wheel of Time books, which could end up in the TV show!
Prime Video's The Wheel of Time adaptation has made some questionable changes from the source material, but one recent casting announcement seems to be making up for one of them. Based on the prolific fantasy Wheel of Time book series by Robert Jordan, Amazon's big attempt at the fantasy game kicked off in 2021 to mixed reviews, with many long-term readers criticizing the numerous and often needless narrative changes, especially those that pertain to major components of the main characters.
The Wheel of Time season 3 returns in early 2025, with the next set of episodes planned to cover The Shadow Rising and The Fires of Heaven. Marcus Rutherford plays Perrin Aybara in The Wheel of Time's cast, terrifically bringing the classic fantasy protagonist to life. Perrin is one of the three boys who set...

With the holidays over, the box office is expected to see a significant slowdown until the release of “Captain America: Brave New World” in February. But there is some intrigue this weekend with the release of “Den of Thieves: Pantera,” which is the start of Lionsgate’s campaign to turn around their woeful box office fortunes.
From 15 films released last year, Lionsgate grossed a mere $244.7 million at the North American box office, according to data from The Numbers. To put that into perspective, 2024’s highest grossing film, Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” made more in its first week in U.S./Canada theaters than the theatrical runs of all of Lionsgate’s 2024 films combined.
The studio was able to end the year on a positive note with Kingdom Story Company’s low-budget family film “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” which grossed a decent $40 million. But that wasn’t enough...

Five years ago, following the lack of recognition at the Oscars for horror films, Trace Thurman and I created “The Hereditaries” (named after Toni Collette’s Hereditary omission), a series of horror awards to acknowledge all of the great work being done in the genre.
We’re now up to the sixth annual Hereditaries (click here to vote), which celebrates the amazing diversity of horror films released in 2024.
Not unlike the 2023 Hereditaries when Evil Dead Rise and Saw X led the pack (hear who won here), the love has once again been spread out across a diverse list of films. Led by cultural phenomenon The Substance (9 nominations), there’s a great range of popular/main stream titles like Alien: Romulus and The First Omen (7 nominations each) as well as quiet sleepers like Strange Darling (6 nominations) and queer classics such as Femme (4 nominations) and I Saw The TV Glow (6 nominations).

Saw is the series that just won’t stop. Some horror fans love these movies, others write them off as nothing but torture porn, but movie-goers usually show up to give them healthy box office returns. Not only did the most recent film, Saw X, wind up making over $100 million worldwide, but it also earned the franchise’s best reviews since the original. Tobin Bell received raves for his shockingly empathetic portrayal of Jigsaw, and in welcome news to fans of the franchise, Sax XI is already in production for a release this fall! But, how does the entire series rank? You can check out our Saw Movies Ranked list below – then let us know how you would rank the movies by leaving a comment!

When Saw smashed its way onto the scene at Sundance in 2004, the world of horror was irrevocably changed and not because a bad horror film had come along to tarnish the genre's name. Bad and forgettable horror movies have been a dime a dozen over the years, mainly because horror is a welcoming genre that allows for experimentation and the discovery of the joy and the fun in a failure. But James Wan and Leigh Whannell's early aughts classic was, and is, anything but bad.
This gorehound feast, which was picked up by Lionsgate for distribution out of Sundance and premiered in U.S. theaters just nine months after its festival debut, catapulted into the hearts of horror lovers almost instantly. It wasn't necessarily a critical success even today, its Rotten Tomatoes score hovers at an even-keeled 50% but horror films have never needed critical success to find their audience.

The genre of horror films has been around for a very long time. Despite shocking and frightening audiences, this genre is very popular, and some filmmakers have made a living by creating horror films, especially after Alfred Hitchcock took the genre to new heights.
Wes Craven, John Carpenter, and George Romero are regarded as classics, but there are also a number of up-and-coming filmmakers who want to make a career in the genre.
One of them is Drew Hancock, whose upcoming sci-fi horror Companion is set to be released early next year, although we’ve just received news that the movie is being pushed back, although not by much.
As Bloody Disgusting reports, Companion has been pushed back from its initial January 10 release date, but it is still going to air in the same month, so everyone who’s expecting to see this movie won’t have to wait much...

With over a billion dollars in box office receipts, the Saw franchise is undoubtedly one of the most successful horror sagas in history. 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the groundbreaking original that was directed by James Wan, and while hes yet to helm another entry in the series since, hes remained involved behind the scenes as en executive producer. However, that isnt to say he would never come back to oversee another movie, but fans who are holding their breath waiting for his triumphant return had better suck in some more air, because it doesnt look like itll be happening anytime soon.

Horror has always been a profitable genre as its typically small budgets guarantee financial success. For a horror movie to truly become a modern classic, it must also receive positive responses from critics and audiences. Thankfully, within the modern horror renaissance, general audiences and genre fans have seen many films that left them equally impressed and terrified. These movies prove that the smallest budgets can help create impactful and creative horror motion pictures.
From 2000 to now, the horror genre has had many established and rising directors use low budgets to their advantage. These specific horror movies cost less than $5 million and have all received critical and commercial success. Some were effective enough to spawn franchises like Paranormal Activity and Insidious. With the right effort and creativity, low-budget horror continues to reign supreme in modern times.

Regular franchise director Kevin Greutert has made some potentially revealing comments about Saw XI’s production and upcoming release date. More on it below.
Saw X, directed by franchise veteran Kevin Greutert, was a pleasant surprise for both audiences and Lionsgate as the film racked up decent reviews and people showed up to watch Jigsaw hack up some more people, this time in Mexico.
Another instalment was confirmed by Lionsgate soon after the film’s release, with Greutert set to return as director. Greutert told us in an exclusive interview that he was keen on making one, and that Jigsaw was “crucial” for the franchise.
Saw XI was supposed to premiere in September 2024, giving the production just a year to get it made, but Lionsgate eventually delayed the film to 26th September 2025.

There are ten films in the Saw franchise, with an eleventh slated for release next year. Back in 2004, however, it was shocking when John Kramer (Tobin Bell) got up in the middle of the dirty bathroom. The iconic score swells and the truth about Jigsaw is revealed when his presumably dead body rises to its hands and knees on the floor.
The ending of Saw is one of the most iconic horror movie twists of all time. While the lore of this moment has been built up in subsequent movies in the franchise, eagle-eyed viewers may spot a few clues in the original film that hint at the surprising ending.

Saw's Jigsaw has come to life in a creepy, gender-swapped cosplay that imagines if Billy the Puppet were female, giving a new perspective to the series. Throughout its 10 core entries, the Saw movies have seen John Kramer (Tobin Bell), otherwise known as Jigsaw, kidnap dozens of people and makes them go through torturous gauntlets, a twisted form of getting them to appreciate their lives more. The killer utilizes Billy the Puppet, a pale, black-haired ventriloquist dummy with red swirls on his cheeks, to deliver messages to his victims, acting as the face of his serial killer alter ego.
Now, AshleyArtistryy_ has released a cosplay of herself as Jigsaw's Billy puppet, bringing the Saw villain to life in a gender-swapped rendition. She sports white facepaint and red lipstick, alongside wavy black hair and red contacts to match the puppet's eyes. Painted on her cheeks are two small spirals, while she wears a red bowtie,...

Lionsgate’s genre-spanning 2024 slate of heist comedies, weepy coming-of-age tales, cheeky video game adaptations and horror stories was aiming to fill a void. Most of these were the kinds of movies that major Hollywood studios have either stopped making entirely or largely relegated to streaming services.
And yet, instead of packing seats at multiplexes due to pent-up demand, everything from director Eli Roth’s irreverent console-to-screen adventure “Borderlands” ($32 million globally), the “Crow” reboot ($23.7 million) and historical crime drama “1992” ($2.9 million) to Halle Berry’s post-apocalyptic horror story “Never Let Go” ($16.2 million), Dave Bautista-led action-comedy “The Killer’s Game” ($5.9 million), Francis Ford Coppola’s sci-fi epic “Megalopolis” ($11.2 million) and “Wonder” prequel “White Bird” ($6.8 million) has sputtered at the box office. That’s a string of seven consecutive flops — each with paltry single-digit debuts — in the nine weeks between early August and mid-October.

Of all the historic Hollywood horror franchises, one in particular has maintained its relevance better than the rest. While people still remember The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Child's Play, and The Nightmare on Elm Street, they aren't flocking to the theaters year after year to see the new installment. With an entire company of dedicated filmmakers aiding its growth, James Wan and Leigh Whannell's baby is about to reach adulthood. 21 years into the Saw franchise, and the series is as relevant as it has ever been. If the success of the previous installment is any indication, it seems like it won't be stopping anytime soon.

The eleventh entry in the Saw franchise, Saw XI, is currently slated for a 2025 release, but what other information about the highly-anticipated sequel is out there?...

Sunday Am Writethru: after Saturday post Paramount’s $28M production Smile 2 is in great shape with a $23M opening (or 1.6M admissions per EntTellgence) after a $9.4M Friday and great Saturday of $8.1M (a -15% hold against previews/Friday!) and a B CinemaScore. That’s better than the B- on the first one, and nickels above the opening of that 2022 movie which did $22.6M.
Good times for the Melrose lot before the Skydance merger storms: They fully unveiled Gladiator II to press and actors branch members on Friday night and from the look of the crowd throughout the two-hour-plus movie, everyone was so locked in and transfixed, no one dared leave for the bathroom. In sum, they loved it. Smile 2 is Paramount’s fourth No. 1 opening title this year after Mean Girls, Bob Marley: One Love and If.
Last night we caught up with Smile 2 star Naomi Scott...

There’s the Black List, an annual survey of Hollywood’s most-liked unproduced screenplays that has been going on for nearly twenty years. For the last fifteen years, we’ve had the Blood List, a survey of unproduced thriller and horror scripts voted upon by industry professionals. In 2022, a website called the Stunt List was launched, “created as an artistic home to encourage writers to showcase their unique and original voices.” And last year, the Stunt List shared their first Dead List, a collection of “market-ready original horror screenplays.” The Dead List is back this year with 50 market-ready horror scripts, and you can check it out Here… and to spice things up, this year’s Dead List also features three “guest scripts.” The first of these guest scripts is The Overlook Hotel, a feature-length prequel to Stephen King’s The Shining that was written by former The Walking Dead showrunner Glen Mazzara.

While much attention in the box office world has been on the catastrophic launch of Warner’s “Joker: Folie a Deux,” another new release this past weekend, “White Bird,” has deepened a two-month slump in theaters for distributor Lionsgate.
Beginning with the Eli Roth’s panned video game adaptation “Borderlands” in early August, the last six films from Lionsgate released in over 1,000 theaters each have grossed less than $50 million in the U.S. and Canada and have largely been critical busts. The other films include the actioner “The Killer’s Game” starring Dave Bautista, the horror title “Never Let Go” starring Halle Berry, the long-gestating remake of “The Crow” starring Bill Skarsgård and Francis Ford Coppola’s critically polarizing and audience alienating “Megalopolis.”
Lionsgate’s “White Bird,” a sequel to the inspirational film “Wonder” that hit $315 million worldwide for Lionsgate in 2017, opened last weekend in 1,018 theaters and grossed just $1.58 million. By comparison,...
