The systemic targeting of Jews during World War II left little room for successful, organized resistance. This is reflected in the movies made about the war, particularly the Holocaust. Historical events like the escape from Sobibor, touted as the most successful uprising of Jewish prisoners, and the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising have inspired directors to explore them for the screen. A much less-known but powerful event took place in rural Belarus, where four brothers led an uprising that saved over 1,200 Jews from the hands of the Nazis. This event is the subject of Edward Zwick’s 2008 film Defiance. Starring Daniel Craig as Tuvia Bielski, the eldest of the brothers who founded the Bielski Partisans, the film tells the true story of a group of Jewish rebels who waged guerrilla-like warfare against their oppressors and established a self-sufficient forest base where they built amenities like schools and hospitals.

Some of the most memorable shows of all time are good, old-fashioned prime-time soap opera fare.
Think Dallas, Dynasty, and Knot’s Landing. All were long-term series that still influence the current television age.
While television may have moved away from the genre, many series still embrace the core principle of those beloved soaps: throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.
(Karolina Wojtasik/Max)
There are a lot of downright scandalous series on the air nowadays and in years past. Those that are rife with drama and unbelievable plots that may not make all the sense in the world but are too entertaining for it to matter.
We’re looking at some of those current and past series that embody the spirit of wacky and dramatic television that had everyone gathered around the water cooler (remember those?) to discuss the latest attempted murder or cheating scandal!

Brad Pitt's best movies feature him in a variety of interesting roles, from the chaotic Tyler Durden in Fight Club to the Nazi-killing soldier Aldo Raine in Inglourious Basterds. However, one of his most beautifully tragic portrayals comes in the form of Tristan Ludlow, the lead character in the 1994 Western epic, Legends of the Fall. Based on Jim Harrison's 1979 novella of the same name, the film follows Tristan as he and his brothers, Alfred (Aidan Quinn) and Samuel (Henry Thomas) enlist in World War I. The film explores the domino effect this decision has on Tristan's life.
Legends of the Fall is a drama film directed by Edward Zwick, starring Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, and Aidan Quinn. Set in the early 20th century, the movie follows the lives of the Ludlow family, focusing on the complex relationships between three brothers and their father against the backdrop of dramatic historical events.

Daniel Craig initially rejected the chance to play James Bond as he was fearful of being typecast. The 56-year-old actor portrayed 007 in five movies spanning from 2006's 'Casino Royale' to 2021's 'No Time To Die' but had reservations about taking the part of the legendary spy as he was concerned it could limit other opportunities for him in the movie industry.Asked if he was nervous about accepting the Bond role, Daniel told The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter Podcast: "Yes, for sure. That's why I turned it down - I mean, I said, 'No'. There wasn't a script at the time, so again, my arrogance was unbelievable, but I was just like, 'Well, until I see a script, I couldn't possibly make a a decision.'"And it was fear, exactly what you're talking about, of that thing and many others, how it would flip my life.

Taking place twelve hundred years before the events of The Witcher TV show, The Witcher: Blood Origin tells the story of seven elves and their fight against a corrupt empire, and Avallach (Samuel Blenkin) is an important figure. Premiering on Netflix in 2022, Blood Origin is a very loose adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher novels, and centers on the seven warriors who fight against the Golden Empire. Most of the characters in Blood Origin are original creations for the series, but there is one supporting player who also appears in The Witcher books and video games: Avallach.
While The Witcher: Blood Origin is a miniseries, the premiere Netflix series, The Witcher is ongoing. The upcoming Witcher season 4 will famously see Liam Hemsworth replace Henry Cavill as protagonist Geralt of Rivia. Though this recasting is already drawing ire, The Witcher season 3 set viewers up for a fascinating next installment. And if...

There may be no greater joy than realizing a long-harbored, seemingly impossible dream. A dream that is kept alive by the slimmest of hope. “Joy” (2024) starring Bill Nighy, Thomasin McKenzie, and James Norton is a conventionally crafted, gently stirring search for that joy regarding motherhood. The Netflix drama, directed by Ben Taylor and scripted by Jack Thorne, sifts through the historical events that precede the birth of the world’s first ‘test-tube baby,’ Louise Joy Brown. The formulaic yet nuanced approach works well for the film as it manages to tug the right kind of heartstrings.
Thorne’s breezy script does not take time to jump into the proverbial action. It is the late 1960s, and we have Jean Purdy (McKenzie) meet visionary physiologist Robert Edwards (James Norton) right away. Jean gets pulled into Robert’s ambitious dream, which would eventually pave the way for IVF (In vitro fertilization). All...

Daniel Craig has had a hugely diverse career in the last decade or so. On the one hand, he is known for playing James Bond. He appeared in five post-20th-century Bond movies, beginning with Casino Royale in 2006. At the same time, Craig's career has included non-Bond dramas, including the 2008 war thriller Defiance, and the book adaptation thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. In the last five years, Craig has also been known as Benoit Blanc, the charismatic detective from the Knives Out movies.
Craig was so good as Benoit Blanc that many thought he deserved an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Though he did get acting nominations for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes both years, the actor was snubbed at the Oscars for both Knives Out and its sequel. Craig's first true leading comedy role was in 2017. His experience in Logan Lucky likely influenced Knives Out. Craig reinvented his career after Bond.
Daniel Craig is most known for his role as James Bond, but with Knives Out, he has found much success starring in a genre he had previously only once explored, comedy films. Throughout most of his acting tenure - including the first two decades of his career - Craig had typically been cast in dramas and adventure films. Road to Perdition, Sylvia, Layer Cake, The Golden Compass, and Defiance stand out as prominent non-007 Daniel Craig movies. Notably, apart from Some Voices in 2000, there were no comedies in his filmography as of 2016.
In 2017, however, one well-received performance changed the trajectory of his career, opening up new avenues and granting him a new baseline in his post-Bond years. In fact, since 2017, Craig has only appeared in five films,...

Thank the Midwest for the stunning “Twisters” box office turnout over the past weekend: The movie’s middle-American appeal helped Lee Isaac Chung‘s disaster movie whip up more than $80 million at the opening weekend box office. As of writing, the Glen Powell star vehicle has grossed over $113 million in the United States.
Plus, a “Super Bowl” trailer always goes a long way with heartland audiences who feel underrepresented or devalued by Hollywood. Ditto an NBCUniversal-backed NASCAR spot featuring Powell himself hocking the film, and a production shot on location in Oklahoma, and a movie about the very disasters affecting states in America’s Tornado Alley. Rival studios should take note of how Universal Pictures has tapped into a rural sensibility here with a movie both fresh and also familiar given its expansion of the IP established by Jan de Bont’s 1996 blockbuster, “Twister.”

The Game of Thrones universe has been crafted with the utmost meticulousness and intricacy. Adapting a novel into a show is always a challenging feat, to say the least, but GoT has rarely, if ever, left any space for remonstrance.

Liev Schreiber is getting candid about what he’s learned about fame over the years, saying that it alone won’t make people truly happy.
The Emmy-nominated actor shared in an interview with Haute Living magazine, published online Thursday, that after decades in the entertainment industry, he realized the importance of working on projects that he’s actually passionate about.
“I work for hire, as they say, and like to make money,” he explained. “I have a growing family. The older I get, the more I think I want it to matter when I work. Of course, it doesn’t always — in fact, it rarely does — but it’s nice when it does, when one of your jobs means something to people. That feels good, like the job does what it was supposed to do in the beginning, which is to connect you to people.”

Exclusive: The director of Riz Ahmed and Rogan Productions’ Channel 4 series Defiance: Fighting the Far Right has opened up about how the show spotlights generational differences within the British Asian community.
Defiance, which launched earlier this week to positive reviews, shines a stark light on the violent struggles of the British Asian community in the late ‘70s and ‘80s, and is told over three hours of interviews and archival footage.
Satiyesh Manoharajah tells Deadline that the show co-produced by Oscar-nominated British Asian star Ahmed explores themes of conflict within the South Asian community, between the older generation who wanted to maintain a low profile and the younger ones who felt that staying quiet was going to get them nothing of significance. This, he adds, is particularly stark due to the fact that the the first British Asian Prime Minister was appointed two years ago.

At least stateside, audiences will experience Femme and The Beast, both starring George MacKay, as near-simultaneous releases. The 32-year-old British actor has been a presence for over two decades dating back to his film debut as a Lost Boy in 2003’s adaptation of Peter Pan. He grew up on screen in films like 2008’s Defiance, 2014’s Pride, and 2016’s Captain Fantastic. Twenty nineteen proved a breakthrough year for MacKay as a leading man, playing a heroic soldier on a mission in 1917 and delivering a brooding, brutal interpretation of Australian urban legend Ned Kelly in True History of the Kelly Gang.
MacKay’s latest one-two punch features elements familiar from his previous standout roles and elevates them to new heights. In Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping’s Femme, he’s electric as Preston, a hardened hypebeast in contemporary London who harbors a secret identity. The character is drawn out...

The closest comp to Ed Zwick’s new memoir Hits, Flops And Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood is William Goldman’s Adventures in the Screen Trade, where he posited a definitive piece of advice on the elusive formula for hit making: “Nobody knows anything.” Although he didn’t create the “if you want to send a message, try Western Union” line that has many authors, Zwick spent a career trying to defy that adage, in directing, writing and producing a long list of great and meaningful films and TV series topped by the Oscar winning Shakespeare in Love and Traffic, to Glory, Blood Diamond, About Last Night, Defiance, The Last Samurai, The Siege, thirtysomething, My So Called Life and many others.
Comparing his book to Goldman sets a high bar. Like the scripter of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid did, Zwick might fawn over great actors like Denzel Washington,...

It’s a deceptively big month on Prime Video in September! To kick things off, The Wheel of Time will be back for a second season on the service, while a live-action The Boys spinoff series called Gen V will be capping off the original series content later in the month.
But there are also some interesting new projects lined up between those two biggies. On September 15, Jenna Coleman and Oliver Jackson-Cohen star in what is sure to be a delicious tale of revenge. Wilderness, based on B.E. Jones’ novel of the same name, stars Coleman as a heartbroken wife who discovers her husband has been cheating on her after she gives up her whole life to move over to America with him and support his career.

Destiny 2’s Autumn Wind Pulse Rifle has returned with Season of Defiance (S20) and, with its PvE and PvP God Rolls, players can use it to effectively wreak havoc against enemies. The Legendary weapon was initially introduced in the popular shooter’s second season, only to be sunset later on. Now, the weapon has been brought back and is considered a great choice for players, especially in PvP activities.
What makes Autumn Wind in Destiny 2 so good is that it has a high Rpm (rounds per minute) rate and incredible stability, making it great for landing precise hits against moving targets – namely, Guardians – even if they aren’t precision shots. Additionally, it has a decent range, making it a viable choice, even when trading fire with an opponent equipped with a Scout Rifle in Destiny 2, for instance. Depending on the user’s skills, even a Sniper Rifle can be countered.

Saban Films recently released a sneak peek clip of the new movie Guns Akimbo, which is scheduled for a release in select theaters at the end of this month. From Deathgasm director Jason Lei Howden, the new action-comedy movie stars Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe in what appears to be his most bizarre movie role yet, and this is certainly not like how we've ever seen him before. You can see what I mean by watching the sneak peek video below.
In addition to Daniel Radcliffe, Guns Akimbo also stars Samara Weaving (Ready or Not), Natasha Liu Bordizzo (The Society), Ned Dennehy (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), Grant Bowler (Defiance), and Rhys Darby (Jumanji: The Next Level). The movie follows Radcliffe as Miles, a young man caught in a gang's deadly game where he's forced to fight to the death as part of an online show with millions of people watching across the world.

Today at Comic-Con, Joe and Anthony Russo announced projects that their AGBO Studios are in development on: an adaptation of the 1978 Japanese anime series Battle of the Planets and an Amazon series based on the graphic novel Grimjack Comics.
Battle of the Planets was originally created by Tatsuo Yoshida and Tatsunoko Studios and was arguably the first mainstream glimpse for U.S. audiences into Japanese anime during the late 1970s. In addition, it was one of the few sci-fi cartoons during that era. The series follows five young orphans who are trained from a young age to form an elite, intergalactic team known as G-Force, swearing to protect Earth and its allies from otherworldly invading forces.

A free-to-play, “massively multiplayer” online game set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s universe of hobbits, wizards and dragons is on its way from Amazon Game Studios in collaboration with Middle-earth Enterprises and Hong Kong-based interactive developer and publisher Leyou Technologies. As yet untitled (and undated), the game, says Amazon, promises players “a new, immersive game experience for epic exploration of the vast world of Tolkien.”
To be published on PC and console, the game – set prior to the events depicted in the Lord of the Rings trilogy – is unrelated to the Lotr-based TV series being developed by Amazon. The game’s development is being led by the team behind Amazon’s New World game and veteran developers whose credits include World of Warcraft, Defiance, Everquest and others.
