TheWrap traveled the globe to cover the world of entertainment in 2014 and sat down with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars to drink, laugh and even get slapped across the face.
Whether it was “Cake” star Jennifer Aniston taking on executive editor Joseph Kapsch in a quiz about herself at TheWrap’s new home base in Santa Monica or “Beside Still Waters” director Chris Lowell literally getting slap-happy with film reporter Jeff Sneider, 2014 was filled with memorable on-screen moments.

Three months after the death of beloved comedian Joan Rivers, Kelly Osbourne and her Fashion Police costars are still feeling the sting of grief. Left to carry on the program without their fearless leader, Osbourne and Giuliana Rancic will see a lot of changes when they return to the E! program in January. "I'm excited but terrified at the same time," Osbourne, 30, told Us Weekly at the L.A. premiere of Beside Still Waters Nov. 17. "Change isn't fun, but it has to happen. This sitution [...]...

The indie dramedy Beside Still Waters, from first-time feature director Chris Lowell (best known as “Piz” from Veronica Mars), follows Daniel (Ryan Eggold), as he invites his oldest friends to spend one last weekend at his parents’ lake house. Even though none of Daniel’s friends share in his nostalgia of the good old days, they still find themselves confessing secrets and rekindling romances that ultimately allow them to let go of the past and look ahead to the future. During this exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor Brett Dalton (who plays James, a struggling actor turned reality star who is less than truthful when it comes to his own romantic life) talked about how he came to be playing this role in his first acting job out of grad school, why he so clearly identified with this character, the challenges in figuring out film acting while on the job,...

This weekend’s onslaught of smaller new films will have awards contenders and big names to jostle with at the box office. Awards hopefuls Foxcatcher and The Homesman begin their theatrical runs in limited New York and L.A. rollouts, with the former a likely winner in the first weekend when the numbers come in Sunday. The films from Sony Pictures Classics and Roadside Attractions, respectively, tell particularly American stories, though from very different eras. The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart took time off in 2013 to work on his directorial debut. Open Road’s Rosewater, starring Gael García Bernal, will begin its theatrical rollout this weekend. It will be the biggest opener of this weekend’s cadre of specialty newcomers, playing in several hundred locations in the U.S. and Canada. Actor Chris Lowell also makes his filmmaking launch with Beside Still Waters. The project had smooth sailing until it came time for distribution,...

When Chris Lowell set out to write his first feature film, he found inspiration in a lake house his parents owned when he was in high school. His friends would often congregate there on weekends and during college breaks, and it became a home away from home for not only him, but his friends who were all coming of age at the same time. His debut “Beside Still Waters,” the film centers around such a place, where a group of...

It’s a known fact that one out of every three indie films is essentially a low budget riff on The Big Chill — a group of childhood friends reunite to memorialize the passing of someone or some place and end up ruminating on the passing of their shared youth as revelations and truths come to light. It’s an easy formula in addition to being easy on the budget, but the risk is that your film will get lost amid the crowd of similar ensemble pieces without ever finding its own voice. Daniel (Ryan Eggold, The Blacklist) recently lost his parents in a car accident, and after their lakeside cabin is foreclosed upon he plans one last blow-out for the friends who spent time with him there before splitting and going their separate ways. One by one they arrive for the weekend, each with their own memories and baggage. Tom (Beck Bennett, Saturday Night Live...

Chris Lowell’s inaugural directorial effort opens with Ernest Hemingway’s quote about how “all generations are lost by something.” Judging by the largely uninspired film that follows, the “something” in question could be stale reunion movies.
Like Return of the Secaucus 7 and The Big Chill before it, Beside Still Waters catches up with a group of friends who’ve come back together after many years apart. Unlike those movies, the friends in question share no revolutionary past, unless it involved liberating kegs of beer from the package store. Their sole touchstone: the fact they used to hang out at Daniel’s (Ryan Eggold) parents’ lake house. The parents recently died, and none of them attended the f...

The group of friends who return to the cabin in the woods for a weekend genre is one that gets its share of entrants, though they are often spaced out to a degree, but Beside Still Waters is getting more attention than most, and is getting first-time director Chris Lowell‘s name mentioned quite a bit.
Lowell’s most recent acting effort was the show Enlisted, but many may remember him from Private Practice, or Veronica Mars. Now he’s taking on directing, and co-writing, and this is certainly an interesting choice for a first move.
The movie also stars The Blacklist‘s Ryan Eggold, and a diverse group that you’re likely to recognize. The general premise may sound familiar, but this one has a few new spins to throw at you, including Whiskey Slaps.
Take a look at the trailer, and keep this one in mind.

You've heard of a slap bet. But what--you may well ponder--is a whiskey slap? The trailer for Beside Still Waters tells us. Take a shot of whiskey; get a slap in the face. It's like a pickle back, but one in which the pickle brine chaser is substituted with a slap in the face. Feel free to bust it out at social events this weekend. I intend to. (Look out bar patrons of New York!) Beside Still Waters is the directorial debut of actor turned-writer/director Chris Lowell, who you recognize from his recurring roles on Veronica Mars as Stosh "Piz" Piznarski or William "Dell" Parker on Private Practice and Grey's Anatomy. After co-writing the ensemble dramedy with producer Mohit Narang, Lowell resisted the temptation to also star in the film. Instead, he cast recent Saturday Night Live castmember Beck Bennett, Not Fade Away's Will Brill, Agents of S.

Chris Lowell ran a somewhat unconventional ship for his directorial debut Beside Still Waters, a highly personal, contained tale about childhood friends reuniting at a lake house years later. The Veronica Mars star shot on film, raised most of his budget by basically pounding the pavement and began each day by taking a bare leap into the lake with his cast outside the house where they shot. "It’s unbelievably, terribly unprofessional," he tells EW, laughing. "But it was a great start. It really got us in the zone." So far, Lowell has had an interesting 2014 with the quick ascent...

Exclusive: Tribeca Film has acquired actor-director Chris Lowell’s indie dramedy Beside Still Waters. The picture marks the directorial debut of TV and film thesp Lowell, who’s best known for his acting turns on Veronica Mars, Private Practice, and Enlisted. Ryan Eggold (The Blacklist) stars as Daniel Thatcher, a young romantic who has fallen on hard times and enlists his childhood friends to relive the glory days of their youth, whether they like it or not.
After the huge success of the Veronica Mars movie campaign on Kickstarter, Lowell and his fellow filmmakers took to the platform to raise $63,000 in finishing funds. The project collected over $207,000, more than tripling its funding goal, and became the 13th most-funded narrative film in Kickstarter’s history. In addition to directing, Lowell scripted with Mohit Narang and produced the dramedy which blends 16mm, Super 8, and his own black and white photography. Saturday Night Live‘s Beck Bennett,...

Chris Lowell is best known for playing Piz on “Veronica Mars” and Dell on “Private Practice,” but he has creative ambitions beyond acting — such as writing, directing and producing. He wore all three hats and stayed behind the camera for his directorial debut “Beside Still Waters,” which he co-wrote with Mohit Narang. Lowell's first feature played the festival circuit and has several distribution offers, but he still needed to raise money and finalize the deliverables, so he looked to Kickstarter for the funds. The goal was to raise $63,021, which was accomplished in a single day, and the campaign has continued on.

(Cbr) Although those who saw "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" knew about S.H.I.E.L.D.'s takeover by Hydra, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." still managed to drop a huge game-changer with last week's episode, "Turn, Turn, Turn," when Grant Ward -- the team's specialist and Supervising Officer to fledgling S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Skye -- came out of the shadows and into the light as an Agent of Hydra, serving John Garrett (Bill Paxton), the Clairvoyant. After shooting Victoria Hand (Saffron Burrows) and two other agents, Ward freed Garrett as the S.H.I.E.L.D. transport flies them wherever they want to go. In order to shed a little light on Ward showing his true Hydra colors, Cbr News spoke with the man behind the secret agent with the highest espionage marks since Romanoff, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." star Brett Dalton, about the major reveal of last week's episode,...

Smack dab in the front of the city-square, white wooden 12-foot letters spell out the phrase “Sonomawood”. For a week in April, this bon mot feels particularly appropriate as filmmakers, producers, press and film fans converge onto the city for the Sonoma International Film Festival. Over this past week, Collider attended the 17th iteration of the festival, a celebration of independent filmmaking from across the globe. For a recap of the event and reviews of the features screened there, including Beside Still Waters, Jadoo, Tasting Menu, Roxie, and more, hit the jump. Sonoma, a small city in the midst of Napa’s (and Sonoma’s own) wineries, stands in stark contrast to the metropolitan perception of California. Whilst driving down from the Oakland airport, you’ll see the as-expected traffic, grey buildings, factories, stadiums, complexes – but then all of the sudden these images will be replaced by farmlands, horses grazing on grass,...

The next few weeks of specialty screenings are going to be directly impacted by the SXSW Film Festival, but there are definitely some unique events on the horizon that you need to know about. We've already covered this weekend's Noir City festival at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz in great detail here. It's an incredible opportunity to catch 10 rare film noir titles in 35mm, many in newly restored prints. There isn't much else going on at the Ritz for the next few weeks due to SXSW, but they will have select screenings of 12 Years A Slave and The Wolf Of Wall Street for those of you who still need to catch up.
The Alamo Slaughter Lane has a screening on Saturday afternoon of Medora, a sports documentary that played at SXSW last March about an underdog basketball team. Veronica Mars fans will want to head to the Alamo Village on Monday...

On Fox's Friday comedy "Enlisted," Chris Lowell plays Cpl. Derrick Hill, the middle brother of three -- Geoff Stults plays the oldest brother, Pete; and Parker Young plays baby brother Randy -- all stationed at the same Army base in Florida.
Luckily for show creator Kevin Biegel, both brotherly love and sibling rivalry broke out almost immediately.
"Kevin had this pipe dream of what he wanted the chemistry to look like," Lowell, decked out in full fatigues on the show's Los Angeles set, tells Zap2it. "He created these archetypes that he was hoping these actors would fall into, and then when the three of us first got together, it was just frightening how quickly we just adopted those roles.
"We quickly transcended our lines and became who we were with each other all the time. Being on set is almost like being stuck in a house when you're growing up with your brothers.

Austin Film Festival ended last week, but the news flashes aren't over yet. The 2013 Audience Award winners were announced Monday and include a few with Austin/Texas connections -- most notably All of Me, an Austin-based documentary, and Sombras de Azul, which was written and directed by Austin filmmaker Kelly Daniela Norris.
The Marquee Feature Award went to Tommy Oliver's family drama 1982, and the Narrative Feature pick Beside Still Waters was also a Jury Award winner. Directed and co-written by Chris Lowell, this ensemble piece explores heavy themes using humor and heart. Many Audience Award winners from past years have gone on to more widespread attention and acclaim, including Silver Linings Playbook, Spinning Plates and 2011's The Artist.

One of the things that makes The Mill Valley Film Festival such an outstanding destination for movie lovers and movie makers is that in addition to screenings of Oscar frontrunners (like 12 Years a Slave, August: Osage County and Dallas Buyers Clip) and international hits (like Blue Is The Warmest Color), audiences are allowed to bask in exciting new voices who premiere their passion projects there. This year one of those films is Chris Lowell's directorial debut, Beside Still Waters, which premieres October 12! It will also screen at The Austin Film Festival.
The deeply personal film focuses on Daniel (played by Ryan Eggold) who, after the tragic accidental death of his parents, invites seven childhood friends to the site of their summer memories, a lakeside cabin about to be sold. But the uninvited arrival of his ex-girlfriend -- and her new fiance --is just one of the weekend's unforeseen complications.
