On the following day, Sofia Coppola, the festival’s guest of honor, will attend a screening of “Virgin Suicides” to celebrate its 25-year anniversary and take part in a masterclass before an audience filled with film students.

Feisty romance and streaming platforms go together like true crime and ... er, streaming platforms. Over on Netflix, Sofia Carson can't miss when it comes to romantic movies, having dominated the streamer's charts with both 2025's "The Life List" and 2022's "Purple Hearts." Meanwhile, Hulu has seen success with its fantasy romance series "The Legend of the Blue Sea." But the reigning champion of feisty romantic fare is currently Prime Video, having seemingly perfected the trashy romantic streaming movie with "My Fault: London," the English-language remake of a Spanish romantic drama.
With that film, the all-powerful algorithm spoke through the Prime Video execs to green-light the ultimate, viewing metric-guided romantic drama. Now, however, there's competition in the form of Netflix's "The Royals." In fairness, "The Royals" isn't really direct competition to Prime Video's romantic drama. For one thing, it's a series rather than a movie, and for another, it comes from India,...

The Life List arrived on the streamer at the end of March, and On Swift Horses starring Jacob Elordi, Will Poulter and Daisy Edgar-Jones hit theaters in April.
Edgar Wright’s The Running Man and Josh Boone’s Regretting You, which will likely follow in the footsteps of the Blake Lively-starring It Ends With Us and further pave a path for future Collen Hoover film adaptations like Verity and Reminders of Him.

Netflix continues to release original movies and TV shows at a regular cadence. The streamer recently released titles like The Electric State (2025) and The Life List (2025), with Havoc starring Tom Hardy marking one of Netflix's most recent films. Havoc reviews weren't glowing from critics or audiences, but the gritty action movie has been a big viewership hit, topping the charts upon its release on April 25.
Though Havoc and many of the streamer's other big titles are presented in English, Netflix is a platform with a global reach, meaning non-English titles continue to be an important part of the service's offerings. Recently, Netflix released non-English titles like iHostage (2025), Demon City (2025), Counterattack (2025), Bullet Train Explosion (2025), and The Eternaut (2025–). Now, another recent non-English title has broken through.

In December, Peacock ordered a Friday Night Lights reboot, and although it is still uncertain if any of the Og cast members will return, Connie Britton did share a word of advice for the new cast. The actress, who played Tami Taylor in both the film adaptation and the 2008 series, recently told Colliderthat she might have no clue about the upcoming Peacock production, but her greatest hope is that whoever is a part of it might have just as much of a special experience as she did with the Og ensemble.

Two series scored their best weekly streaming performances ever in early April, both of which came in the week leading up to their finales.
The White Lotus took over the No. 1 overall spot on Nielsen’s streaming charts for March 31-April 6. It recorded 1.31 billion minutes of viewing on Max for the week, including just a few hours of viewing its April 6 season finale. Paramount+’s 1923 also topped the billion-minute threshold in the week before its second season finale (which also debuted April 6), coming in at 1.06 billion minutes. Both are series highs so far for the two shows.
In between them in the overall rankings was the prior week’s leader, The Residence. The Netflix murder mystery recorded its third straight week above 1 billion minutes of watch time. Two other shows, Grey’s Anatomy (1.06 billion) and Bluey (1.01 billion), also scored a billion minutes of viewing for the week.

Tom Hardy is having a great year. After wrapping up the Venom trilogy in 2024, the actor had two projects that headed straight to streaming and both experienced exciting success on different platforms.
The most recent release is Netflix's action thriller Havoc, which follows the successful Paramount+ series MobLand. Gareth Evans of The Raid fame wrote and directed Havoc, which starred Hardy, Timothy Olyphant, and Forest Whitaker in the main roles. Although the movie opened to mixed reviews from the critics and even worse ratings from the audience,Havoc undeniably became a major hit on Netflix, topping the charts in its first week, per Tudum.
Havoc premiered on Netflix on Apr. 25, and had only two days to make an impact before the streamer stopped the clocks. That makes its viewership even more impressive because, for the week between Apr. 21 and 27, Havoc received 29.8 million views, and 53.1 million hours viewed.

Netflix’s Tudum Live is finally going to be … on Netflix. What a concept.
Tudum is named after the sound effect that plays ahead of any piece of Netflix programming. Tudum Live is the streamer’s fan fest — it’s like a Comic-Con just for Netflix (though CinemaCon may actually be a better comparison). So the Netflix programming marketing other Netflix programming is now considered proper Netflix programming itself. You follow?
And this year, not only will Tudum finally move from a YouTube live-stream to a Netflix live-stream within the Netflix app, the whole event is being reimagined as a variety show format, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, including performances, stunts and segments.
The first Tudum event took place just ahead of the global Covid-19 pandemic, in January 2020 at the Bienal Pavilion of São Paulo, Brazil. At the time, Tudum focused on the platform’s young-adult programming, and the initial...

Angelina Jolie is mostly known as a highly profitable action star, especially for her run in the early 2000s. Even at the height of her stardom, her projects were plagued with poor reviews.
Her 2002 rom-com Life or Something Like It was no exception. Even though it premiered three years after her Oscar for 1999's Girl, Interrupted, and in the midst of her Tomb Raider fame, the rom-com was a major critical and commercial failure. However, many projects get an afterlife on streaming, and Tudum reports Jolie's Life or Something Like It was a major hit on Netflix following its debut on streaming.
For the week between Apr. 14 and 20, Life or Something Like It debuted in third place in the global charts. The rom-com received encouraging numbers, with 5.5 million views and 9.6 million hours viewed.

Those who were around to witness it would remember what a culture-defining moment the release of The Passion of the Christ was over two decades ago. The movie was controversial, but also highly successful. Until Deadpool & Wolverine debuted last year, it was the highest-grossing R-rated hit of all time. It should come as no surprise that The Passion of the Christ remains as popular as ever; the movie found a prime spot on Netflix's weekly top 10 list. This resurgence could perhaps be credited to the Good Friday and Easter Sunday holidays, which also saw quite a selection of faith-based offerings at the box office.
The Passion of the Christfinished second in Netflix's top 10 weekly rankings, in the non-English movies' category. It was the number one movie in 10 countries, and accumulated a total of 8.5 million views over the week. Additionally, it was also among the top 10 movies in as many as 46 countries worldwide,...

Netflix is known for many things, but true crime (like that disturbing documentary about Kidfluencers) and barely serviceable thrillers are surely two of the most salient. Now, the streamer has combined the two into the ultimate piece of Netflix "content" and wouldn't you know it, the result is a worldwide mega-hit.
"iHostage" is a new thriller from the streamer based upon the real-life hostage event that took place in Amsterdam back in 2022. On February 22 of that year, a 27-year-old gunman entered the Apple Store in Leidseplein, Amsterdam, and held customers hostage for almost five hours, demanding €200 million in cryptocurrency to end the ordeal. The hostage-taker, later identified by Dutch newspaper Het Parool as Abdel Rahman Akkad, focused mainly on one captive customer, a 44-year-old Bulgarian man, while others hid in the store and people on the upper floor of the building remained trapped. The Netflix weekly TV charts got an overhaul last week.
Season 7 of the techno-paranoia series Black Mirror managed 10.6M views in its first full week on the platform from April 14 to 20, which is up from its debut week’s 7.1M to put it in first place among English-language TV. Though, both weeks of viewership have been down compared to Season 6. Similarly, that season didn’t top the charts until its first full week on the streamer either, but it amassed 11.6M views when it did.
Second place went to Ransom Canyon, which debuted on the charts with 7.2M views, while Adolescence fell to third place with another 6M views during this interval. The limited series is now sitting at 130M views since it premiered, so it is inching close to overtaking Stranger Things 4 on the all-time most popular list, but it still has a ways to go.

There’s a new No. 1 on the English TV list this week, and it’s the long-running dystopian favorite that made you afraid of your toaster. Black Mirror is back and as popular (and thought-provoking) as ever. With 10.6 million views, the returning series proves once again that sometimes fans just want to break from reality.
Joining the chart with a bang is Ransom Canyon — the sweeping, slow-burn Western romance debuted with 7.2 million views to lasso the No. 2 spot. And Adolescence, the limited series that’s been dominating conversation for six weeks now, shows no signs of slowing down. The top five most viewed Netflix movies and shows for last week, listed on Tudum, have some big hitters in there. The movies had over 30 million views, and the top five shows had another 40 million. And that’s just for the week to April 13. That’s a whole lot of watching going on.
On the movie front, viewers continued to love a recent romantic comedy and a couple of prehistoric settings. There’s the warmth and humor from a new family comedy and a fun caper for all ages, with the ever-present scenario of good versus bad. Mind you, these are the goodies in this particular film.
As for the shows, those 40 million viewers have made some great choices. A strong view of society and its problems is a theme for the two at the top. But that's balanced with a touch of animation and that good versus evil theme again.

Five weeks since it first hit Netflix, Adolescenceis still drawing more viewers and crushing more milestones. The acclaimed limited miniseries from Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham remains on the platform's global English Top 10 Shows list, though it has since given up the #1 spot to the hot docuseries Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing, which just barely surpassed it with 9.8 million views compared to 9.7 million. The fall to #2 hasn't slowed its rise on the all-time charts, though, as it has now topped 124 million views and moved into third place among all English-language shows, behind just Stranger Things Season 4 and Wednesday. It's just the latest major feat for the breakout success, which tackles the negative influence of incel culture and manosphere influencers on young men.
Although it was never meant to live beyond its four-episode run, the overwhelming response to the show has shifted the perspective of both Netflix and the series creators.

Adolescence continued its climb up Netflix’s Most Popular list last week, adding another 9.7M views to its tally from April 7 to 13, putting it at No. 3 among all English-language series so far.
With 124M views in the five weeks since it was released, Adolescence now sits just under Stranger Things 4 on the all-time chart. There is still a chance the modest limited series could even trump the Duffer brothers’ fan-favorite, since there are still 58 days in its release window during which time Netflix will continue to count its views toward its standing on the list.
Adolescence actually ranked second on the weekly TV list, though, as Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing eked out the first place win with 9.8M views in its debut week.
The streamer’s first foray into the medical drama, Pulse, held onto third place with 8.5M views, and Black Mirror returned with Season 7 to the tune of 7M views.

Netflix seemingly ‘gives up’ great films and TV series. Well, when we say give up, we mean sell them for an extortionate amount of money. And we bet they’re happy they didn’t do that for the current number one series, Adolescence, which has remained #1 in the ‘Top 10 Programs’ in multiple countries, including the UK, and has recently claimed the title of the most-watched Netflix limited series. Not to mention the media attention it’s generating.
Anyway, we digress. Why does Netflix give away great films and TV series? Read on to find out more.
How Does Netflix Decide What to Keep and What to Give Away?
There’s a strategy behind the TV series and films that Netflix gives up. This strategy consists of numbers and dollars.

Season 3 of “The White Lotus” wrapped on Sunday April 6 and while critics and audiences had mixed feelings about the finale, one thing was clear: it was an unassailable ratings hit. The Max/HBO show tops the Samba TV Weekly Wrap streaming Top 10 for the seventh consecutive week after 1.6 million households tuned in for the season finale on Sunday.
That single-day viewership outpaced the Season 2 finale by 44% and more than doubled the viewership of the first season’s finale.
And we may not have seen the last of “The White Lotus” – any stragglers who missed the final episode or are still catching up will be counted in next week’s tally, giving the show a shot at another week at the top.
In other news, our spring season “Big Three” of chart-toppers are now down to just two. “1923” retains its grip on second place as that series also wrapped up on Sunday,...

Gerard Butler has had many successful projects, and his name is still drawing a lot of attention. Now, his critically panned disaster movie is getting new success on Netflix, despite not having the best reception when it was released in theaters.
2017's Geostorm was not a huge hit with the critics or viewers. However, the film, which continues the same trend of other disaster movies about the world ending, has a new chance at life thanks to streaming. Geostorm hit Netflix on April 1, and it has quickly become a hit on the platform, per Tudum.
For the week between March 31 and April 6,Geostorm debuted in fourth place on the global charts with 4.9 million views and 8.9 million hours viewed. The numbers aren't as high as other debuts, but it was still significant, considering that it only debuted in the United States.

It’s always been the case that new shows and movies arriving on Netflix can get a real boost in their first week or two. Some may take a while to make their mark, but others just storm in and pick up big viewing numbers immediately. That’s certainly the case for last week, with seven new entries across the two top five lists.
The latest lists from Tudum show the biggest changes are in the movie category. Four of the top five are new, and the other is in its second top-five week. It’s a mix of older films just reaching Netflix and some brand new content. However new, they are attracting plenty of viewers and interest.
Three new entries break into the top five shows. One of those could be a potential long-runner over several seasons with the right care and health checks. Of the two shows...

Keke Palmer is a huge draw, and her latest project proves that. Early this year, she released her buddy comedy One of Them Days, which was a major critical and commercial hit.
The buddy comedy marked hip-hop star Sza's acting debut, and the two of them did magic together. Following a very successful theatrical run at the beginning of the year, the movie is now a hit on Netflix as well, Tudum reports.
One of Them Days premiered on Netflix on Apr. 2 and for the week between Mar. 31 to Apr. 6, the movie amassed 7.7 million views and 12.4 million hours viewed. It was enough to send it straight to charts, and it debuted in second place before the previous week's chart-topper The Life List, which added 29.2 million more views after its initial 24.4 million views.
The numbers are even more impressive when one realizes that One of Them Days is only available to stream on Netflix U.
