Two series scored their best weekly streaming performances ever in early April, both of which came in the week leading up to their finales.

The White Lotus took over the No. 1 overall spot on Nielsen’s streaming charts for March 31-April 6. It recorded 1.31 billion minutes of viewing on Max for the week, including just a few hours of viewing its April 6 season finale. Paramount+’s 1923 also topped the billion-minute threshold in the week before its second season finale (which also debuted April 6), coming in at 1.06 billion minutes. Both are series highs so far for the two shows.

In between them in the overall rankings was the prior week’s leader, The Residence. The Netflix murder mystery recorded its third straight week above 1 billion minutes of watch time. Two other shows, Grey’s Anatomy (1.06 billion) and Bluey (1.01 billion), also scored a billion minutes of viewing for the week.

Tom Hardy is having a great year. After wrapping up the Venom trilogy in 2024, the actor had two projects that headed straight to streaming and both experienced exciting success on different platforms.

The most recent release is Netflix's action thriller Havoc, which follows the successful Paramount+ series MobLand. Gareth Evans of The Raid fame wrote and directed Havoc, which starred Hardy, Timothy Olyphant, and Forest Whitaker in the main roles. Although the movie opened to mixed reviews from the critics and even worse ratings from the audience,Havoc undeniably became a major hit on Netflix, topping the charts in its first week, per Tudum.

Havoc premiered on Netflix on Apr. 25, and had only two days to make an impact before the streamer stopped the clocks. That makes its viewership even more impressive because, for the week between Apr. 21 and 27, Havoc received 29.8 million views, and 53.1 million hours viewed.

“You” debuted its fifth and final season as Netflix’s most-watched show of the week.

Season 5 of the Netflix drama series, which saw Penn Badgley’s final romp as serial killer Joe Goldberg, scored 10.1 million views from its April 24 debut through April 27, ranking as the most-watched show on the English TV list during the week of April 21. The debut of the season, which also featured appearances from Season 1 star Elizabeth Lail as Guinevere Beck, also boosted Season 1 back into the week’s top 10 TV list, coming in the No. 10 spot.

For comparison, “Black Mirror” Season 7 scored 10.6 million views as the streamer’s most-watched TV show during the previous week, though that was in the new season’s second week after first debuting to 7.1 million views. “Black Mirror” Season 7, now in its fourth week on the streamer, slid from the No. 1 spot to the No. 3 spot with 4.5 million views.

And this year, not only will Tudum finally move from a YouTube live-stream to a Netflix live-stream within the Netflix app, the whole event is being reimagined as a variety show format, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, including performances, stunts and segments.

Netflix’s murder mystery The Residence moved into first place on the streaming charts for the last week of March, and The White Lotus hit a high mark as it closed in on its third season finale.

The Residence, starring Uzo Aduba as a brilliant detective investigating a murder in the White House, drew 1.84 billion minutes of viewing in the United States from March 24-30. That’s up from 1.36 billion for its premiere week, a gain of about 36 percent.

Reacher, whose season three finale premiered March 27 on Prime Video, took second overall with 1.3 billion minutes, up from 1.1 billion the previous week. The White Lotus hit a series high with 1.11 billion minutes of watch time on Max, its first time over the billion-minute mark.

Netflix is known for many things, but true crime (like that disturbing documentary about Kidfluencers) and barely serviceable thrillers are surely two of the most salient. Now, the streamer has combined the two into the ultimate piece of Netflix "content" and wouldn't you know it, the result is a worldwide mega-hit.

"iHostage" is a new thriller from the streamer based upon the real-life hostage event that took place in Amsterdam back in 2022. On February 22 of that year, a 27-year-old gunman entered the Apple Store in Leidseplein, Amsterdam, and held customers hostage for almost five hours, demanding €200 million in cryptocurrency to end the ordeal. The hostage-taker, later identified by Dutch newspaper Het Parool as Abdel Rahman Akkad, focused mainly on one captive customer, a 44-year-old Bulgarian man, while others hid in the store and people on the upper floor of the building remained trapped. The Netflix weekly TV charts got an overhaul last week.

Season 7 of the techno-paranoia series Black Mirror managed 10.6M views in its first full week on the platform from April 14 to 20, which is up from its debut week’s 7.1M to put it in first place among English-language TV. Though, both weeks of viewership have been down compared to Season 6. Similarly, that season didn’t top the charts until its first full week on the streamer either, but it amassed 11.6M views when it did.

Second place went to Ransom Canyon, which debuted on the charts with 7.2M views, while Adolescence fell to third place with another 6M views during this interval. The limited series is now sitting at 130M views since it premiered, so it is inching close to overtaking Stranger Things 4 on the all-time most popular list, but it still has a ways to go.

Jennifer Lopez is again teaming with Netflix, this time for an auteur’s latest project. Lopez is set to star in an adaptation of the book “The Last Mrs. Parrish,” directed by Robert Zemeckis and set up at Netflix, IndieWire has confirmed.

The 2017 bestseller “The Last Mrs. Parrish” sold over a million copies and was a Reese Witherspoon book club pick. A “Talented Mr. Ripley”-esque thriller, the book follows a woman and con artist named Amber who schemes to befriend and eventually undermine a socialite named Daphne and her family, including seducing her husband, all while trying to keep the skeletons of her past under wraps.

The project is currently in development with a script from Andrea Berloff and John Gatins. No additional casting was announced.

Netflix is developing the psychological thriller feature that has Zemeckis set to direct and Lopez to star. Oscar-nominated screenwriters Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton) and John Gatins (Flight) are penning the script.

The Last Mrs. Parrish is based on author Liv Constantine’s 2017 novel that was a Reese Witherspoon Book Club selection and has sold more than a million copies. The book centers on Amber Patterson concocting a plan to get closer to the wealthy Daphne Parrish, whose lavish life Amber envies.

Serving as producers on the film are Liza Chasin for 3dot Productions, Molly Sims for Something Happy Productions and Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina for Nuyorican Productions. Exclusive: Netflix and Jennifer Lopez are building on their strong partnership for the superstar’s next project, with plans to team her with an iconic director. Sources tell Deadline that Oscar winner Robert Zemeckis has come on to direct an adaptation of The Last Mrs. Parrish, with Lopez on board to star.

The film is in development with Andrea Berloff and Oscar nominee John Gatins penning the script. This marks a reunion for Zemeckis and Gatins, who worked together on the Oscar-nominated Denzel Washington drama Flight.

Liza Chasin is producing for 3dot Productions along with Molly Sims for Something Happy Productions, and Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina for Nuyorican Productions. Margaret Chernin of 3dot will exec produce as will Lynne Constantine and Valerie Constantine, Jack Rapke and Derek Hogue.

Based on the Liv Constantine novel, the story follows a con artist (Lopez) who targets a wealthy couple — the Parrishes — as her next victims.

The top five most viewed Netflix movies and shows for last week, listed on Tudum, have some big hitters in there. The movies had over 30 million views, and the top five shows had another 40 million. And that’s just for the week to April 13. That’s a whole lot of watching going on.

On the movie front, viewers continued to love a recent romantic comedy and a couple of prehistoric settings. There’s the warmth and humor from a new family comedy and a fun caper for all ages, with the ever-present scenario of good versus bad. Mind you, these are the goodies in this particular film.

As for the shows, those 40 million viewers have made some great choices. A strong view of society and its problems is a theme for the two at the top. But that's balanced with a touch of animation and that good versus evil theme again.

Five weeks since it first hit Netflix, Adolescenceis still drawing more viewers and crushing more milestones. The acclaimed limited miniseries from Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham remains on the platform's global English Top 10 Shows list, though it has since given up the #1 spot to the hot docuseries Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing, which just barely surpassed it with 9.8 million views compared to 9.7 million. The fall to #2 hasn't slowed its rise on the all-time charts, though, as it has now topped 124 million views and moved into third place among all English-language shows, behind just Stranger Things Season 4 and Wednesday. It's just the latest major feat for the breakout success, which tackles the negative influence of incel culture and manosphere influencers on young men.

Although it was never meant to live beyond its four-episode run, the overwhelming response to the show has shifted the perspective of both Netflix and the series creators.

Adolescence continued its climb up Netflix’s Most Popular list last week, adding another 9.7M views to its tally from April 7 to 13, putting it at No. 3 among all English-language series so far.

With 124M views in the five weeks since it was released, Adolescence now sits just under Stranger Things 4 on the all-time chart. There is still a chance the modest limited series could even trump the Duffer brothers’ fan-favorite, since there are still 58 days in its release window during which time Netflix will continue to count its views toward its standing on the list.

Adolescence actually ranked second on the weekly TV list, though, as Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing eked out the first place win with 9.8M views in its debut week.

The streamer’s first foray into the medical drama, Pulse, held onto third place with 8.5M views, and Black Mirror returned with Season 7 to the tune of 7M views.

“Adolescence” is now the third most-watched Netflix series ever with more than 124 million views since its March premiere.

The British drama series, chronicling a 13-year-old killing a classmate, beat the viewership of “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” as it continues to inspire conversations globally. It only has “Wednesday” and “Stranger Things” Season 4 ahead of it on the list of the streamer’s most popular shows to date.

Meanwhile, “Black Mirror” returned for Season 7 on Thursday and landed the No. 4 spot on the English TV list with more than 7 million views. The new episodes landed in the Top 10 in 71 countries, including No. 1 in the U.S. on Monday. “North of North,” Netflix’s first Canadian original series, also debuted on Thursday and landed in the No. 9 spot with 3 million views.

Netflix seemingly ‘gives up’ great films and TV series. Well, when we say give up, we mean sell them for an extortionate amount of money. And we bet they’re happy they didn’t do that for the current number one series, Adolescence, which has remained #1 in the ‘Top 10 Programs’ in multiple countries, including the UK, and has recently claimed the title of the most-watched Netflix limited series. Not to mention the media attention it’s generating.
