Subhash K Jha Revisits Balki’s Cheeni Kum 18 Years Later
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits R Balki’s Cheeni Kum, which started Amitabh Bachchan, Paresh Rawal and Tabu. Plus, as a bonus, in a throwback conversation Amitabh Bachchan talks about the film and working with Tabu.

Cheeni Kum is probably the sauciest, slickest, and most scrumptious romantic comedy you’ll see in the Hindi language in a long time.

She’s in London for a holiday. He, Amitabh Bachchan, is a cantankerous sarcastic chef who can’t take a snub even when it’s served up on a platter. She , Tabu, serves him a biryani he cannot forget. Cheeni Kum makes you forget there’s a difference of 30 years between the woman and the man. That’s the magic of pure acting. The magic of two of the finest actors at work as they create an ebullient alchemy.

Also in this mellow ode to love, are an 85-year-old mom (Zohra Sehgal) living life king-sized,...

“Raj Kaushal Will Be Missed Till The Day I Live,” Revisiting Shaadi Ka Laddoo With Sanjay Suri
Image
Subhash K Jha looks back at late director Raj Kaushal’s Shaadi Ka Laddoo which starred Sanjay Suri, Ashish Chowdhary, Mandira Bedi, and Divya Dutta. Sanjay Suri shares his thoughts on working with the director who understood how to get the best performance out of him, a man he still misses today.

Raj Kaushal’s Shaadi Ka Laddoo is 21.

A hotshot ad maker, Ravi Kapoor, in London. His buddy Som from Ludhiana. Ravi unmarried and sick of his single status. Som married and raring to go go go. Amusing premise for a romantic comedy, specially when handled by a director who knows the world that he enters. Raj Kaushal takes us into the seemingly sexy but supremely sad world of Ravi Kapoor (Ashish Chowdhary), who looks enviously at his pal’s seemingly perfect marriage with the nice warm Punjabi kudi (Divya Dutta), while Som in London looks at every skirt and sari in sight…...

Benediction (Terence Davies)

Time is everything in a Terence Davies film. In Benediction, his biopic about English poet Siegfried Sassoon (Jack Lowden), he eventually covers his subject’s marriage to Hester Gatty (Kate Phillips). There’s a shot of the couple standing still, facing the camera as they pose for a wedding photo (a shot that tends to pop up throughout the director’s filmography). The camera flashes, we see the black-and-white photo, and then a fade transitions us to the future, where it rests on their bedside while Hester looks at their newborn child. The sequence is an encapsulation of what Davies does best: observing life with one’s head facing backwards, the cumulative weight of the past bearing down on every moment of the present.

Grand tour (2024)
Sensorial cinema by Paul Risker
Grand tour (2024)
Grand Tour

Portugeuse director Miguel Gomes' The Grand Tour transports us back to colonial Burma in 1917, where jilted bride Molly (Crista Alfaiate) sets off across the Asian continent in pursuit off her fiancée Edward (Gonçalo Waddington), a British civil servant.

Gomes has established himself as a singular voice in world cinema. From his Portugeuese mountain-set drama, Our Beloved Month Of August (2008), to Tabu's (2012) character's search at the foothills of Mount Tabu in Africa, and the Arabian Nights trilogy (2015), Gomes has geographically shifted the focus of his stories. He continues to redirect his authorial traits not only through the setting of Asia but by bringing together the screwball comedy with the aesthetically striking monochrome cinematography of The Grand Tour's period chapters, and a documentary style for the present day.

Grand Tour

In conversation with Eye For Film, Gomes discussed his transformation as a storyteller, the relationship between cinema and.

Ajay Devgn Once Took A Hilarious Dig At Tabu’s Single Status: “Tabu Ko Main Hi Chahiye, But Main Mil Nahi Raha!”
Image
Ajay Devgn Tabu Banter ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

If there’s one Bollywood friendship that continues to age like fine wine, it’s the one between Ajay Devgn and Tabu. While the magic of the duo is often witnessed on-screen, that magic is nearly overshadowed by their chemistry off-screen. In a throwback interview, Ajay had the internet buzzing when he hilariously joked about why Tabu is still single.

The Viral Moment: Ajay’s Joke That Stole the Spotlight

In a previous interview with Navodaya Times, Ajay Devgn didn’t hold back when asked about Tabu’s unmarried status. Without missing a beat, Ajay delivered a classic one-liner: “Tabu ko main hi chahiye, but main mil nahi raha hoon (Tabu wants me but that can’t happen).”

After the laughter died down and Tabu gave him a mock glare, Ajay quickly followed it up with: “Matlab mere jaisa yaar. Mere jaisa aur...

Limited Releases Rule In Eclectic Indie Weekend From Focus, Bleecker Street, Mubi, More – Specialty Preview
Image
This is a nifty indie weekend with a busier and higher profile limited release schedule than we’ve seen in some time. The Ballad of Wallis Island, The Friend, Grand Tour, Viet And Nam, Holy Cow and documentaries The Encampments, which is super timely, and Secret Mall Apartment are peppering theaters in major markets.

Many have festival imprimaturs from Cannes on down and great Rotten Tomatoes critics scores. In moderate release, Sony Pictures Classics is out with Steve Coogan in The Penguin Lessons.

Limited openings: Watermelon Pictures debuts Macklemore-produced The Encampments at the Angelika, which has been adding shows, and the doc looks like it’s heading to a super opening of $70+k at one location. The distributor moved up the release date given the timeliness of the film, which follows students at Columbia University who launched a movement protesting the war in Gaza. It features detained student activist...

Runaway Groom: Gomes Charts a Barren Odyssey

In what serves as an extremely taxing personification of cold feet, Miguel Gomes feels as if he’s going through stylistic motions with his latest feature, Grand Tour. A surprise project considering his long gestating adaptation of Euclides da Cunha’s Backlands, it follows on the heels of his experimental pandemic film The Tsugua Diaries (2021), and his sprawling three part epic, Arabian Nights (2015). Blending documentary footage overlaid with heavy narration with a rather comically conceived bad romance, it’s a period piece which initially promises to slide into the unique territory of his 2012 masterwork, Tabu (especially as it’s utilizing the same two actors suffering beneath a different kind of compromised romance).…...

“Cinema, for Me, Is Like a Big Adventure”: Miguel Gomes on Grand Tour, Cigarettes, and Sunglasses
Image
Miguel Gomes’ Best Director victory at Cannes likely struck a small but passionate group of cinephiles as a greater win for the cause. It had been nearly 20 years since his first feature, The Face You Deserve, debuted to extremely limited interest; even if every film since represented an incremental uptick in attention there was still little expectation he’d be handed one of cinema’s five-or-so most prestigious honors from a jury headed by the director of the previous year’s highest-grossing film.

It began an international festival tour that reached one of its final stops at NYFF, during which time I met Gomes for a discursive interview that touches on cigarettes, sunglasses, Pixar, and his next feature as much as Grand Tour itself. Seated inside Film at Lincoln Center’s Café Paradiso––we meant to speak outside on an unseasonably warm October afternoon; security forbidding him from smoking rendered...

The Traveler and the World: Miguel Gomes’s “Grand Tour”
Image
Miguel Gomes’s Grand Tour premieres in theaters on March 28 before coming to Mubi on April 18.Grand Tour. Some years ago, I traveled nearly the length of Russia on the Trans-Siberian Railroad. That winter was warm, as nearly all are now, but a Siberian winter is still winter by any definition, and for two weeks I shivered my way from Ulaanbaatar to Moscow. I slipped on the vast frozen expanse of Lake Baikal, visited a museum dedicated to the painter Nicholas Roerich where all the paintings were fakes, saw a cathedral built atop the merchant house where in one night the entire Romanov line had been eliminated. On the leg from Irkutsk to Novosibirsk I shared a cabin with three men. I do not speak Russian, and for twenty-eight hours we managed to communicate via gestures and photos and sentence fragments ventured in halting English. They wanted to know where I was coming from,...

Grand Tour Review: An Enchanting Return for Miguel Gomes
Image
Note: This review was originally published as part of our 2024 Cannes coverage. Grand Tour opens in theaters on March 28 from Mubi.

If Chris Marker and Preston Sturges ever made a film together, it might have looked something like Grand Tour, a sweeping tale that moves from Rangoon to Manila, via Bangkok, Saigon and Osaka, as it weaves the stories of two disparate lovers towards a fateful reunion. The stowaways could scarcely be more Sturgian: he the urbane man on the run, she the intrepid woman trying to track him down. Their scenes are set in 1917 and shot in a classical studio style, yet they’re delivered within a contemporary travelogue––as if we are not only following their epic romance but a director’s own wanderings.

Grand Tour, which delivered much-needed magic to this year’s Cannes Film Festival lineup, is directed by the one and only Miguel Gomes, the...

Nargis’ Radha in Mehboob Khan’s Mother India(1957):

Nargis played Radha, the deserted wife who brings up her two sons on her own and kills one of them when he turns into an outlaw. For the first time in a Hindi film, the female protagonist was portrayed as strong, resilient, conscientious, and doughty without losing her femininity. Nargis won both national and international awards.

Meena Kumari’s Choti Bahu in Guru Dutt’s Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962): In the feudal household where women were content wearing expensive sarees and jewellery and never mind what their husbands did with other women, this wife dared to raise her voice. New US Trailer for Miguel Gomes' Film 'Grand Tour' from Cannes 2024
Image
"I'll hunt him down, whatever it takes." This one is for cinephiles only. Mubi has unveiled the official US trailer for a strange film titled Grand Tour, a unique creation from Portuguese director Miguel Gomes, best known for his films Tabu (2012), The Tsugua Diaries (2021), and his Arabian Nights trilogy (2015). The film premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival last year and it won the Best Director award as part of the competition, with stops at many other festivals after. Described as a "breathtaking odyssey of romance, escape, and pursuit." In 1917 Burma, a British civil servant abandons his fiancée — only to find her then relentlessly chasing him across Asia. A playful yet melancholic reimagining of the "pursuit film," blending luminous 16mm B&w cinematography with archival footage. This stars Gonçalo Waddington & Crista Alfaiate. It is a tragicomedy though also "melancholic and courageous." This is definitely not for everyone - an experimental, abstract...

Ahead of the roll-out, the new trailer and poster have arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: “Grand Tour by Cannes Best Director winner Miguel Gomes is a breathtaking odyssey of romance, escape, and pursuit. ‘Grand Tour’ Trailer: Miguel Gomes’ 2025 Oscar Entry Is an Ode to Hapless Romance
Image
Miguel Gomes’ stunning “Grand Tour” is a trek through yearning, spanning both time and space.

The film, which premiered at Cannes in 2024 where Gomes won Best Director, was later acquired by Mubi for release. “Grand Tour” takes it title in stride: The film begins in 1917 Burma, where British diplomat Edward (Gonçalo Waddington) ditches his fiancée Molly (Crista Alfaiate) after getting cold feet before their nuptials. Edward instead sets off on a pursuit across Asia, with Molly following suit.

The film is billed by Mubi as a “melodrama and screwball comedy with a cat-and-mouse chase between lovers.”

“Grand Tour” includes black-and-white period visuals with modern-day documentary footage to span from Saigon to Shanghai onscreen. The film was Portugal’s Best International Feature entry to the 97th Academy Awards.

“I think I’m really attached to Portuguese cinema,” Gomes told IndieWire. “Portugal doesn’t have a film industry. Because of the economical context,...

Looking back at Tabu’s 2010 Comedy? – Toh Baat Pakki
Image
On paper, the idea of playing the busybody housewife Rajeshwari in Toh Baat Pakki, who seems to have only one mission in life, namely to see her sister (newcomer Yuvika) married off, must have sounded like an exciting new character to explore for the brilliant actress. Alas, Tabu had not bargained for the mundane situations and the pedestrian dialogues that her character is put into.

Toh Baat Pakki is one of those tragic comedies that don’t elicit a hint of humour. If Basu Chatterjee lost the plot, he would probably have turned up with this listless ode to the middle-of-the-road movies of the 1970s.

This middle-of-the-roader gets stranded in the middle of nowhere. The plot is intrinsically bereft of ingenuity. The direction is plodding and strained most of the way.

Tabu plays the interesting-on-paper dreadful-in-execution housewife as part-schemer, part-dreamer but entirely annoying and avoidable. Unlike the shrew that Sridevi...

The film is produced by O Som E A Fúria, the company behind Miguel Gomes’ “Tabu” and “Arabian Nights,” Eugène Green’s “The Portuguese Nun” and Lucrecia Martel’s “Zama.”

“First Person Plural” centers on Mateus Lagoa and his wife Irene, who will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary at a luxurious resort on a tropical island, leaving their teenage son dangerously adrift. A melancholic mood creeps in, fracturing their world and hinting at unforeseen dangers.

In a statement, Aguilar comments: “When Mateus and Irene wake up in their idyllic retreat and the whole landscape changes abruptly: luxury hotels, massages, cocktails, stereotypes of a reward on earth, everything takes on a ceremonial nature,...

Miguel Gomes on ‘Grand Tour’ and How Portuguese Cinema Escapes ‘from the Tyranny of the Industry’
Image
Miguel Gomes does not consider himself a genius like Alfred Hitchcock.

The 52-year-old Portuguese director’s ravishing, cross-continental, mostly B&W feature “Grand Tour” — a mix of drama and ethnology — won him the Best Director award at Cannes back in May and is now Portugal’s Oscar submission to the 2025 Oscars. According to Gomes, unlike Hitchcock, he cannot sit around a room and dictate innovative ideas for story arcs and shots.

Speaking with IndieWire at the Sunset Marquis in West Hollywood, in his first time in L.A. and on the first stop of his Oscars press tour amid the film’s upcoming release in France and Italy, the gracious, soft-voiced, sharp-eared Gomes said, “I have, in my case, to open the window, let the world come in, and react to it.” Cigarette puffs later, he said, “I have to catch butterflies.”

It’s fascinating to hear a modern master...

Why did Jeremy Renner Turn Down Mission: Impossible?
Image
Here’s why Jeremy Renner refused to return for Mission Impossible. ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Jeremy Renner chose dad life over action-packed stunts. Yep, you heard that right. The Marvel star turned down a franchise that defines explosive action to be there for his daughter, Ava.

Renner spilled the tea on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, explaining that there was no way he could leave his 11-year-old for a year and a half. “There [was] no schedule, so I can’t go out for a year and a half. I gotta go be a dad,” Renner said, adding that it wasn’t just about the distance—it was about Ava. “I couldn’t move my daughter out here; her mom was back home. I was landlocked.”

But here’s where it gets even crazier. The Mission: Impossible team didn’t just ask him to return—they offered him a week-long trip overseas.

Tom Hardy Reveals Shocking Changes He Wanted for Venom: The Last Dance
Image
Changes Tom Hardy wanted in Venom: The Last Dance ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

When Venom: The Last Dance hits theaters, it’ll wrap up a trilogy of films that boldly ventured into the Spider-Man universe but without Spider-Man. Sony’s strategy has opened the door to some wild, offbeat stories, from Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web to Morbius, doing its own thing. But Tom Hardy’s portrayal of the chaotic antihero, Venom, has truly defined this franchise. As Hardy revealed, the biggest shock for fans might be the film’s unexpected technical twist: bringing Venom into the daylight.

It might sound simple, but as Hardy shared with CinemaBlend, getting the symbiote into the sunlight posed a significant challenge. “One of the challenges in this movie was that we wanted to see Venom during the daylight,” Hardy explained. “It’s a huge exposure point for Venom. At nighttime, you can technically hide...

Dakota Johnson On Embarrassing Audition Moment She’ll Never Forget: “I Took My Shirt Off”
Image
Here’s why Dakota Johnson was embarrassed by this audition ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Speaking at a private event in Los Angeles, the Ben and Kate star spilled the tea about a time she went way too far in the audition room. “I got really into it,” she shared. “It was dramatic, and I took my shirt off. And then you didn’t have to do that.” Cue collective secondhand embarrassment.

But the kicker? She’s still cringing about it. “It’s still embarrassing,” Johnson admitted before laughing, “I’m more embarrassed that I just told that story.” Let’s just say she gave the phrase “putting it all on the line” a whole new meaning.

This wasn’t the only audition horror Dakota dished out. During her Madame Web press tour, she dropped another gem about being labeled “pretentious” for simply introducing herself. Shaking hands with the audition crew was enough to spark some drama.

Julia Roberts Has Strict Rules for Raunchy Scenes & She Insists On Toning Them Down!

Here’s how Julia Roberts deals with raunchy movie scenes. ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

With over 50 movies, the 56-year-old actress has never gone au natural on-screen. Why? Well, Julia Roberts insists on keeping her career “G-rated.” Yep, it’s all about choices, and she’s made some pretty firm ones.

In her recent British Vogue cover story, Roberts spoke about her stance, admitting, “It’s more about what I choose not to do.” The Erin Brockovich star said she’s not here to judge others but has always been transparent about her boundaries. “To not take off my clothes in a movie or be vulnerable physically is a choice I make for myself,” she explained. Roberts opts out of the raunchy stuff and never looks back.

But wait, it gets better. This decision isn’t just about her career—it’s personal. In 2009, at the Duplicity premiere, she shut down any hopes of changing her mind.

Was Mila Kunis Close To Turning Down Friends With Benefits?

Here’s how Mila Kunis accepted the Friends With Benefits role ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Well, after a dinner with director Will Gluck and co-star Justin Timberlake, they reworked it—and the rest is rom-com history. The Black Swan star admitted, “When I got the script, it was very dated, but I knew it made for a funny movie.” Talk about a formidable first impression. But Mila Kunis saw potential, so she sat down with Gluck and Timberlake to hash out the details.

The three of them realized they were on the same page over a meal (because the best ideas are born over food). “We were able to workshop it, rewrite the script, and tailor the characters to what we feel our generation is like now,” Kunis explained. And just like that, the film we know and love was born—funny, fresh, and cheeky.

Ajay Devgn At The Box Office 2024: Had A Surprising Year With Failures! (Photo Credit – Facebook)

Ajay Devgn had a brilliant start at the box office this year with the horror thriller Shaitaan starring R Madhavan. The film was a hit at the box office and everyone was expecting a superb year for the actor who promised to arrive with four films in 2024.

Ajay Devgn Box Office 2024

But Shaitaan’s box office dominance could not help Ajay Devgn retain stardom as he delivered one of the biggest flops of his career on Eid with Maidaan. The sports biopic clashed at the box office with Akshay Kumar’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and could not earn despite accolades!

He next arrived with another huge defaulter spoiling his screen presence with Tabu with a shoddy screenplay in Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha. He is finally aiming for a redemption of sorts at...

All Is Full of Grace: Miguel Gomes on “Grand Tour”
Image
Grand Tour.Grand Tour (2024), director Miguel Gomes’s sixth feature and first to play in competition at Cannes, is a return to the globe-trotting style of his pre-pandemic work. In this follow-up to his remarkably resourceful Covid comedy The Tsugua Diaries (2021), which he codirected with his wife and frequent collaborator Maureen Fazendeiro, the Portuguese filmmaker exhibits an equal but opposite kind of inventiveness as he turns a two-page passage from W. Somerset Maugham’s The Gentleman in the Parlour, a 1930 collection of the English author’s travel writing, into a peripatetic odyssey across Southeast Asia. In 1918, Edward (Gonçalo Waddington), a civil servant for the British government, spontaneously flees Rangoon the day his fiancée, Molly (Crista Alfaiate), arrives to be married. As Edward sets off by boat to Singapore, and from there to Bangkok, Saigon, Manila, Osaka, and Shanghai, telegrams from Molly inexplicably arriving all the while, the story blossoms into a surreal,...

Maren Ade Sets First Film Since Toni Erdmann with Magic Word
Image
With only three stellar features to her name in the last two-plus decades, The Forest for the Trees, Everyone Else, and Toni Erdmann, every new film from Maren Ade comes with much anticipation. While she’s also stayed busy producing no shortage of great work with Tabu, Arabian Nights, Western, In My Room, The Whistlers, Ahed’s Knee, Corsage, About Dry Grasses, and more, the German filmmaker is now working on her fourth feature.

In an interview with Screen Daily, Komplizen Film producer Janine Jackowski revealed Ade is scripting her next film Zauberwort (aka Magic Word), with plans to shoot in 2026, which means a festival premiere is still likely three years away. “[Ade] is writing very intensely. She is working very hard,” said Jackowski, though was tight-lipped about any other details on the project.

As for whether we’ll ever see that U.S. remake of Toni Erdmann, which at one...

‘Grand Tour’ Review: A Playful Look at a Doomed Romance in the Twilight of Colonialism
Image
Miguel Gomes’s Grand Tour takes its title from an established travel itinerary known as the Asian Grand Tour, a popular option with Westerners seeking a broad but surface-level introduction to the continent in the early 20th century. Proceeding from Mandalay to Rangoon (present-day Yangon) to Singapore, and then on through Bangkok, Saigon, Manila, and Osaka, before ending in Shanghai, the tour was ideally designed to satisfy the era’s popular taste for Eastern exoticism in an efficient, tourist-friendly package.

It’s easy to see the appeal for Gomes, a director for whom boundaries of space and time have always been ripe for cinematic manipulation. Grand Tour retraces the steps of the journey with the imagination and playfulness of his best work, indulging its globetrotting impulses while casting a satirical eye on its uncomfortable basis in colonial conquest.

Gomes’s film actually takes its titular tour twice, utilizing a diptych...

Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha Song Review – Kisi Roz: Maithili Thakur’s Immature Voice Doesn’t Do Justice To Tabu & Ajay Devgn’s Heartbreaking Love Story!
Image
Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha – Kisi Roz Song Out (Photo Credit – YouTube)

Ajay Devgn and Tabu’s heartbreaking love story, Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, is arriving in theaters on July 5. A new song from the film, helmed by Neeraj Pandey, titled Kisi Roz, is out. The song is crooned by Maithili Thakur and composed by Mm Kreem.

Manoj Muntashir has penned the lyrics, and this is the third song from the love story. Earlier, the two songs, Ae Dil Zara and Tu, did not peak. While Tu, a song about Lord Krishna, is inspired by Chhand, Ae Dil Zara touched hearts.

Now, the third song, Kisi Roz, has been released in Maithili Thakur‘s voice that does not find a place in hearts, simply because of the mismatch of voice, lyrics, and emotions. While Manoj Muntashir’s pen brings the depth of heartbreak, the voice doesn’t justify the emotion.

‘Grand Tour’ Review: Miguel Gomes’ Avant-Garde Eastern Odyssey Is Not Recommended For Tourists – Cannes Film Festival
Image
After the extraordinary triple whammy of Emelia Perez, The Substance and Anora, here comes Portuguese auteur Miguel Gomes with a blast of cinematic chloroform to calm the Cannes Competition down a touch.

A talky, experimental odyssey through the Far East, it deals with issues of colonialism and gender, but in such an oblique way that it’s hard to fathom without referring to the rather cryptic press notes that come with it. Fans of Gomes’ deadpan style — with which he broke out in 2012 when his film Tabu became an arthouse favorite on the festival circuit — no doubt will respond to its eccentricity, its wry irony and its undeniably striking monochrome cinematography. Less enlightened viewers may wish to take a pillow.

The film takes place in two timeframes. The fictional narrative takes place in 1918 and begins with British civil servant Edward Abbot (Gonçalo Waddington) arriving at Mandalay station in Burma. Although...

‘Grand Tour’ Review: Miguel Gomes’ Beguiling Colonial Romance Travels from Saigon to Shanghai in Search of Lost Time
Image
The spirit of “Sans Soleil” casts a long shadow over Miguel Gomes’ beguiling “Grand Tour,” a less essayistic but similarly atemporal travelogue that sometimes feels almost as indebted to Chris Marker as Gomes’ “Tabu” was to F.W. Murnau. Much like Marker’s 1983 masterpiece, Gomes’ film is propelled by the mysterious frisson that it creates between “exotic” documentary footage and disembodied narration. And much like “Sans Soleil,” “Grand Tour” uses that non-stop voiceover to shape its accompanying images into an abstract story about the elusive relationship between time and memory.

In this case, that story is a love story (of sorts), one that again finds Gomes harkening back to the kind of blinkered colonial romances that were so prevalent in the silent era and the early days of Hollywood. And since a love story requires a tactile anchor for its yearning, Gomes — in stark contrast to Marker — cast a pair of...
