Writer/director Osgood Perkins‘ feature film adaptation of the Stephen King short story The Monkey reached theatres last week – and now, a mockbuster from The Asylum called The Jolly Monkey has joined it on the big screen! You can watch the trailer for The Jolly Monkey in the embed above.
The feature directorial debut of Ryan Ebert, who has previously written the likes of Heretics, Shark Warning, Megalodon: The Frenzy, Shark Side of the Moon, Tales of a Fifth Grade Robin Hood, Apocalypse of Ice, and San Andreas Mega Quake, the film has the following synopsis: Upon their mother’s death, siblings Jenny and Marshall return to renovate her crumbling motel, The Jolly Monkey. But as they work, a deadly force tied to their family’s dark past emerges, forcing them to face terrifying truths if they want to survive.

The Asylum have a new film out, Heretics, which shouldn’t be confused with Heretic or even The Heretics as much as its makers would like you to. The film is, surprisingly, only their second foray into this style of filmmaking, with their first found footage attempt being 2013’s Asylum: The Lost Footage.
That’s surprising for a studio renowned for producing low-budget, high-concept films. Heretics should have been the perfect opportunity for them to capitalize on the popularity and ease of found footage films. Unfortunately, however, the results are less than impressive.
The film begins with a somewhat nostalgic opening sequence, we hear the whir of a VHS tape being inserted into a player, followed by flickering video static and the appearance of cryptic praises to Lilith.

When they’re not churning out mockbusters, The Asylum manages to produce films like Shark Warning at a pretty good pace as well. And with fall having arrived, I figured I might as well get in one last tale of finned fury before Krampus and killer Santas become required viewing. I probably shouldn’t have pushed my luck and looked for a killer Rudolph film instead.
Young Danny (Gordon Mudd) and Alan (Jonas Silbor) play on the beach under the not-so-watchful eye of their Uncle Ron when a great white swims into the shallows and attacks Danny. Twenty years later, the now-grown Alan is returning just in time for the Lake Havasu fishing tournament. He’s almost instantly recognized by Lisa, “You’re the brother that lived!

The biggest surprise about Shark Side of the Moon is that, in a genre that’s already seen Sharks of the Corn, Sharkula, Ouija Shark and even Shark Encounters of the Third Kind, it took so long for someone to use the title. What shouldn’t be so surprising is that it was The Asylum that did it!
During the Cold War, the Soviets were experimenting with human/shark hybrids at a launch facility. As is usually the case in these situations the experimental creatures got free. In a desperate bid to keep them from reaching the ocean, Sergey lured them onto a shuttle and took them on a one-way trip to the moon.

From the writer of Shark Side of the Moon comes The Asylum’s Shark Warning, which is first swimming to limited theaters on July 26 before arriving on VOD outlets on July 30.
In Shark Warning, “After 20 years, a man returns to the town where his brother was killed by a shark. But when it resurfaces and kills again, the man decides to hunt down the predator.”
Of course, the storyline is set into motion when a bunch of pesky humans commit the cardinal sin of shark attack movies, putting their own greed ahead of the safety of the town’s residents. Yup, it’s another low-budget Jaws. You already know what you’re getting from this one.
The film will be opening in the following theaters this Friday:
Laemmle Glendale – Glendale, CA Hickory Ridge Cinemas – Brunswick, Oh Trylon Cinema – Minneapolis, Mn Film Noir Cinema – Brooklyn, NY Aurora Cineplex – Roswell, Ga

One of the stranger subgenres of horror films to emerge recently is that involving sharks from outer space. Space Sharks is the latest addition, following Iron Sky and its sequel, Sky Sharks and Shark Side of the Moon, among others. Of none of them are nearly as good as the original The Outer Limits episode The Invisible Enemy, but that’s a whole different bucket of chum.
What concerns us now is the commercial spacecraft, The Clairvoyant, returning to Earth with a cargo of alien sea creatures and plant life. That includes what looks like a couple of small sharks with legs and feet. They have visions of generous research grants dancing in the heads of their scientific team. That consists of Dr. Johnson, Dr. Thompson and Dr. Hansen played by...

Aimee: The Visitor opens with a title card telling us that Aimee was not portrayed by an actor or created with digital effects. She is, they claim, the first femme fatale created using AI. The timing is ironic considering the current strikes in Hollywood were, in part, the result of studios wanting to replace writers and performers with AI. However, if this is state of the art, they don’t need to worry just yet.
Scott Keyes is a hacker. You can tell because he has his computer set up in an abandoned loft and sits shirtless in front of his monitor so engrossed in the porn he’s watching he doesn’t notice he’s not alone.
Hunter and his sister Gazelle (Faith West; Maid Droid) have stopped by with some software for him.

If you’re a fan of true crime documentaries or early millennium classic cartoons then boy does Hulu’s list of new releases have some great news for you!
Hulu continues its implicit understanding that streaming services are basically true crime distribution machines this month with a trio of intriguing titles. While it’s not necessarily true crime per se, The Ashley Madison Affair about the notorious dating platform premieres on July 7. That will be followed by Betrayal: The Perfect Husband on July 11, which is based on a compelling podcast of the same name. The Jewel Thief arrives on July 13 to provide an account of Gerald Blanchard, one of history’s most creative criminals.
But where does the cartoon excitement comes in? Well, that’s because season 11 of Matt Groening’s beloved Futurama premieres on July 24. Fry, Leela, the Professor, and Bender will all return for a direct continuation of...

Halle Bailey isn't the only Little Mermaid who can currently be seen on the big screen. After the recent release of Disney's The Little Mermaid, a live-action remake of the original animated film released in 1989, a separate adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersem story has also been put into limited theaters by The Asylum. The film is also now available on digital outlets and can be watched at home. For a peek at this new animated version of The Little Mermaid, you can check out the trailer below, courtesy of JoBlo.
The Asylum's The Little Mermaid, also referred to as Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, is directed by Michael Johnson (Battle Oasis) and written by Anna Rasmussen (Shark Side of the Moon). As with the Disney adaptations, it takes inspiration from the original story by Andersen from 1837.

Maneater is the twelfth feature film from writer/director Justin Lee since he came on the scene in 2018 with Big Legend. And it comes at an opportune time since it’s been a couple of months since we’ve reviewed an old-fashioned shark attack film. Shark Side of the Moon and Sharkula don’t count for obvious reasons.
Jessie got dumped just before her wedding. But since the honeymoon was already paid for, her friend Sunny convinced her to turn it into a vacation. So, along with Will, Brianna and the rest of the crew they set sail with Captain Wally and Beth.
As this is happening, Harlan is running around town demanding the police do something about the shark that killed his daughter. He also...

The biggest surprise about Shark Side of the Moon is that, in a genre that’s already seen Sharks of the Corn, Sharkula, Ouija Shark and even Shark Encounters of the Third Kind, it took so long for someone to use the title. What shouldn’t be so surprising is that it was The Asylum that did it and it makes its bow as a Tubi Original, part of Bitefest, the streaming service’s Shark Month.
During the Cold War, the Soviets were experimenting with human/shark hybrids at a launch facility. As is usually the case in these situations the experimental creatures got free. In a desperate bid to keep them from reaching the ocean, Sergey lured them onto a shuttle...

From the directors of The Asylum’s Dune knockoff and the writers/director of The Asylum’s Aladdin ripoff comes The Asylum’s Tubi Original Shark Side of the Moon. Just when you thought it was safe to colonize Earth’s crater-covered moon again, Glenn Campbell and Tammy Klein introduce Russian human-shark hybrids as cosmic predators. Or, more appropriately, lower-than-low-budget digital renderings of what The Asylum standards define as extraterrestrial Street Shark lookin’ freakshows. You’re going to read the review you’d expect for Shark Side of the Moon, a zero-star technical affair that’s barely fit for Syfy’s Sunday headliner slot — but with such an out-of-bounds concept, it’s hard to ignore and not marvel at the Frankensteining of genres on display.
The gist is simple. Russian scientists create humanoid-shark supersoldiers that can survive any situation, which escape their facility and are flown to the moon by...

Meagan Navarro wrote in her Men review for Bloody Disgusting, “Alex Garland’s adherence to the abstract will be divisive, but those that don’t mind enigmatic descents into surrealistic, gruesome horror will find this a trip worth taking.” She also notes that the latest A24 horror film “bides its time with a measured unsettling until an insane, unforgettable third act.
