A thriller feature that is set to star Kim Kardashian has landed at Amazon MGM Studios.

Plot details are currently under wraps for the untitled project that stemmed from an original idea by Natalie Krinsky, who will write the script. Krinsky conceived the idea with Kardashian in mind, and it has yet to be determined whether the film will be planned for theatrical or streaming.

Ethan Coen has found the leads for what will be the Coen brother’s first film project as a solo director, casting Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan to star, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

As of now, plot details are being kept under wraps. Coen wrote the film’s script with his wife, Tricia Cooke, and the plan is for the untitled film to begin shooting this fall.

Coen’s film is set at Focus Features and Working Title, with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner producing for Working Title, and Coen and Cooke also producing alongside Robert Graf.

Sony Pictures Television and WarnerMedia have extended a content deal that will see the likes of Spider Man: No Way Home and Ghostbusters: Afterlife made available on HBO Max and HBO channels across Central Eastern Europe.

The deal spans territories including Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina and North Macedonia. Streamer HBO Max will replace HBO Go in the region next month. It is currently available in 46 territories and is rolling out further to Europe this year.

The partnership incorporates other Sony blockbusters including Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Unchartered and Morbius, along with features such as Happiest Season, The Broken Hearts Gallery and Monster Hunter.

The move is an expansion of a pre-existing deal that has seen multiple titles appear in the region via WarnerMedia’s channels.

LGBTQ characters appeared in a higher percentage of films in 2020 than ever before, according to a new study from GLAAD. The study also found more of those characters were people of color, and more of them than ever had a substantial amount of screen time.

GLAAD’s annual Studio Responsibility Index found that of 44 films from eight major studios released throughout 2020, 10 of them, or 22.7%, had characters who identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual or queer. That percentage is up from 2019, in which only 18.6% had LGBTQ characters.

But for the fourth year in a row, GLAAD found that transgender characters and non-binary characters were completely absent from major studio theatrical releases, with the organization saying that the film industry greatly lags behind TV when it comes to representation in this regard.

Exclusive: MGM’s Orion Pictures and Plan B Entertainment have set Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Judith Ivey, Sheila McCarthy, Michelle McLeod and Ben Whishaw to join Frances McDormand in writer/director Sarah Polley’s feature adaptation of Miriam Toews’ bestselling novel Women Talking. Rounding out the cast are August Winter and Liv McNeil and Kate Hallett in their feature film debuts. Plan B will produce Women Talking alongside McDormand via her Hear/Say Productions.

Based on the best-selling novel by Miriam Toews, Women Talking follows a group of women in an isolated religious colony as they struggle to reconcile their faith with a series of sexual assaults committed by the colony’s men. Published in 2018, the novel was named a Best Book of the Year By The New York Times Book Review, NPR.Org, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Slate, Publishers Weekly and Time, among many others.

While it is still a slow but sure climb, movies are back and the summer movie season is upon us. Horror fans have much to look forward to, including Seance. And we got to chat with stars Suki Waterhouse and Inanna Sarkis all about the flick, which is coming to a theater near you, as well as the comfort of home, this week.

This is the feature directorial debut of Simon Barrett, known for writing movies such as You're Next, The Guest and Blair Witch. Barrett has frequently collaborated with Adam Wingard, who directed all of the aforementioned movies, as well as Godzilla vs. Kong. For Berret's first feature, he crafted a horror-mystery with slasher vibes and supernatural elements at play. It also features a predominantly female cast, led by Suki Waterhouse in the leading role. The cast also includes Madisen Beaty, Ella-Rae Smith, Seamus Patterson and Marina Stephenson-Ker.

Selena Gomez will be serving up a third season of Selena + Chef on HBO Max.

New episodes of the unscripted series will premiere later this year. In Season 3, the platinum-selling recording artist and actress will continue her cooking adventures at home with a new roster of all-star chefs that will help her whip up delicious dishes. Like in its first two seasons, each chef will highlight a different charity each episode. To date, the series has raised $360,000 for 23 nonprofit organizations.

The series is executive produced by Gomez for July Moon Productions along with EPs Eli Holzman, Aaron Saidman and Leah Hariton on behalf of Industrial Media’s The Intellectual Property Corporation and Melissa Stokes.

On the heels of opening weekend for “Godzilla vs. Kong,” Warner Bros., which distributed the film, celebrated its $48.5 million debut, the biggest showing in the coronavirus era. In a note to press, the studio cheered itself on with an all-caps message: “Big Movies Are Back With Our Kaiju-sized Opening!”

The tone was markedly different than the one that greeted the media last September following the release of the studio’s confounding sci-fi thriller “Tenet.” That film, the first major tentpole to premiere theatrically since the pandemic began, generated $20 million in its first five days. “There is literally no context in which to compare the results of a film opening during a pandemic with any other circumstance,” the studio said in an email. “We are in unprecedented territory, so any comparisons to the pre-covid world would be inequitable and baseless.”

Moviegoing has returned to Los Angeles, so naturally Christopher Nolan was one of the first customers in line to attend a screening. As reported by NBC News, the “Tenet” and “Dunkirk” filmmaker was “among the first customers in line as film theaters reopened after coronavirus restrictions were eased in Los Angeles.” Nolan attended the AMC Theater in Burbank, California. Los Angeles County finally got the go-ahead on Monday, March 15 to re-open movie theaters after California state leaders confirmed on Friday that the county had moved into the less restrictive red tier on the coronavirus chart. “I think 2020 is going to be more of a horse race,” I remember one studio distribution boss beaming to me.

Even though Disney had the newly acquired 20th Century Studios and Searchlight, and would count both in their annual box office, the behemoth in 2020 lacked the franchise titles it had in 2019 which fired up its Disney+ streaming service. Mumbai, Nov 5 (Ians) The Broken Hearts Gallery, a rom-com executive-produced by Selena Gomez, is scheduled to get a theatrical release in India on November 20. The film stars Geraldine Viswanathan, who traces her roots to India.

The romantic comedy follows Lucy (Geraldine), a 20-something art gallery assistant living in New York City, who also happens to be an emotional hoarder. After she gets dumped by her boyfriend, Lucy is inspired to create The Broken Heart Gallery, a pop-up space for items from previous relationships.

Gomez is an executive producer of the film, which marks the directorial debut of Natalie Krinsky. It also stars Dacre Montgomery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Molly Gordon, Phillipa Soo and Bernadette Peters.

Sony Pictures saw an 18% drop in second quarter profits to $299M from July-September versus the same period in 2019. However, the figures rep an increase on the first quarter’s $230M which ended June 30 this year. Revenues across the division were off by $615M compared to last year while theatrical sales dropped to $13M versus $715M in Q2 2019, clearly affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

A key portion of the domestic market is still closed while there are lingering restrictions on cinemas and the threat of renewed lockdowns in Europe. In 2019, Sony’s Q2 earnings were largely attributable to the summer success of Marvel sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

Sony is merging its theatrical, home entertainment and TV distribution marketing operations under the co-oversee of Josh Greenstein, the studio’s Motion Picture Group President, and Keith Le Goy, the studio’s Networks and Distribution President.

The move comes at time for the Culver City, CA studio as it responds to viewers’ changing viewing habits during the pandemic, and the need to respond to emerging release patterns by harnessing Sony’s collective expertise in marketing a title through its entire lifecycle, across all platforms.

Due to the combining of departments, we hear that roughly 35 staffers were cut in distribution and marketing. While studio brass have been considering this type of restructuring for some time, the pandemic further hastened that decision.

Stateside, all theatrical, home entertainment and television distribution marketing divisions will be brought together, while there will be a regional model for those businesses abroad.

Selena Gomez will produce a psychological horror film called “Dollhouse” at STXfilms, and she’s also eyeing to star in the project, STXfilms Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson announced Tuesday.

“Dollhouse” is set in the upper echelon of the New York City fashion scene. Though the exact logline is under wraps, it’s in the spirit of Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” with Natalie Portman. Michael Paisley wrote the screenplay.

Gomez will produce through her July Moon Productions banner alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps, who are also coming on board to produce. The producers are now looking for a director for “Dollhouse.”

Psychological thriller in vein of Black Swan.

Selena Gomez has come on board to develop STXfilms’ upcoming psychological thriller Dollhouse and is eyeing the project as a potential starring role.

Gomez is producing the film through her production company July Moon Productions, along with 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen.

The search is underway for a director on Dollhouse, which is being positioned as being in the vein of Black Swan.

Michael Paisley wrote the screenplay, which is set in the world of New York City’s haute couture fashion scene.

As Regal Theaters in the U.S. and U.K. parent Cineworld weigh closing their cinemas, this weekend’s box office offered little encouragement as this weekend’s top 10 came to about $8.2 million, and could be $10 million-$11 million for all films. That’s down from $9.6 million for last weekend’s top 10, which saw about $12 million overall. By comparison: This weekend in 2019, with the opening of “Joker,” brought in $150 million overall.

“Tenet,” by far the biggest contributor to domestic returns since it opened a month ago ,held well again, down 21 percent with $2.7 million. It has reached $45.1 million domestic so far, for $307 million worldwide.

The only country that is not reliant on “Tenet” is China, where local titles have driven the grossed to over $1 billion in the last six weeks. This weekend (a holiday there) showed two titles both gross over $150 million with “My People My Homeland” and the animated “Jiang Ziya.

Tenet is the number one movie in North America for the fourth consecutive week. The latest offering from Christopher Nolan brought in an additional $3.4 million domestically, which is pretty dismal when compared to this time last year. Rambo: Last Blood debuted on September 20th, 2019 with $18.8 million domestically, for comparison. Internationally, Tenet was able to earn an additional $15.8 million, which brings its grand global total to $283.2 million.

With a reported $200 million price tag, Tenet still has a long way to go before making any money back for Warner Bros. Generally, a movie is set to turn a profit when it makes it's the bulk of its money domestically, but that has not been the case with Tenet, since not all theaters in the major markets are open. Even so, people are going to the movie theaters less due to the public health crisis, which is still raging on. However, Warner Bros.

Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” has topped $280 million worldwide, dominating a mild U.S. box office with $3.4 million at 2,850 locations in its fourth weekend to go past $41 million domestically in four weeks.

The Warner Bros. tentpole, which carries a hefty $200 million price tag, took in a weekend total of $19.2 million worldwide in 58 markets. The U.S. posted the top number with a 26% decline, followed by Japan with $3 million in its second weekend and a 30% decline.

“Tenet” is the first major studio release to launch during the pandemic, and its small-ish numbers underline the industry’s challenge of attracting customers amid a worldwide health crisis and social distancing restrictions. Disney’s “Mulan”– which isn’t getting a theatrical release in the U.S. — grossed $3.4 million in 20 markets to lift it to $64 million world wide. Its fifth weekend of “The New Mutants” took in $2.5 million worldwide, including $1.1 million at 2,305 domestic sites.

Warner Bros. is still holding out for theaters in major cities like New York and Los Angeles to potentially reopen and provide some boost to American grosses, as the film only added 20 additional theaters this weekend to bring its screen count to 2,930. The slow numbers have provoked concern that the majority of American moviegoers are not confident enough in the safety of movie theaters and public spaces in general to consider buying tickets.
