Marvel Star Kathryn Newton to Star in Shark Thriller 'Devil's Mouth'
Image
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniaactress Kathryn Newton is preparing to sink her teeth into a creature feature that will see her swap ground insects for underwater predators. The Marvel star has secured a major role in a shark survival thriller helmed by Jeff Wadlow, the director of Kick-Ass 2, Fantasy Island, and Imaginary. Newton will headline the upcoming film, titled Devil's Mouth, alongside Lana Condor, who is best known for her role in To All the Boys I've Loved Before, but also starred in the recently unshelved Coyote Vs. Acme.

Newton is no stranger to scares, having starred in two acclaimed horror movies (among other titles) just last year, hot on the heels of her heroic turn in the McU's third Ant-Man film. The first was the "coming of rage love story" Lisa Frankenstein, which saw her in the titular role opposite Cole Sprouse, and the second was the hit vampire flick Abigail,...

Kathryn Newton's star power is gaining strength as The Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania actress has secured another major role, this time in a new shark thriller, Devil's Mouth. The film will see Newton battling for survival against the relentless underwater predator aptly likened to the devil. She won’t be facing the danger alone, though, as the report from Deadline reveals that To All The Boys I've Loved Before breakout star, Lana Condor, has also been cast. Devil's Mouth is a high-profile collaboration between Amazon MGM, and Lionsgate, marking Newton's second Amazon project following the well-received time-loop romance The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, which premiered on Prime Video to critical acclaim.

In what promises to be a thrilling spin on the modern shark horror hit, 47 Meters Down, Devil's Mouth will see Newton and Condo as two college best friends whose vacation trip to Thailand takes a dangerous turn.

‘Outer Banks’ Star Chase Stokes To Make Directorial Debut On ‘I Told The Sunset About You’ For Monarch Media

Exclusive: Outer Banks breakout Chase Stokes is stepping behind the camera for his feature directorial debut with the coming-of-age drama I Told the Sunset About You. Monarch Media Developing ‘A Walk To Remember’ Reboot
Mandy Moore and Shane West in Le temps d'un automne (2002)
Exclusive: Monarch Media has secured the rights to A Walk to Remember, the seminal early aughts coming-of-age romance from Nicholas Sparks, with plans to develop a reboot alongside the original film’s producers Denise Di Novi and Hunt Lowry.

An enduringly popular bestseller published in 1999, A Walk to Remember follows a rebellious high school senior who falls for a quiet, faith-driven girl after being forced to participate in a school play, discovering the transformative power of love, forgiveness and the beauty of living each day with purpose.

Famously, Shane West and Mandy Moore broke out with their turns in the original 2002 film adaptation from Warner Bros. While the Adam Shankman film made less than $48 million in theaters, it remains one of the most popular titles in the modern rom-com canon to this day.

The full producing team on the reboot will include Steve Barnett, Alan Powell and Vicky Patel for Monarch Media,...

‘Valiant One’ Movie Ending Explained And Summary: Did Brockman Survive?
Image
Steve Barnett’s Valiant One would have made for a decent subplot in a film, but spinning an entire film out of that narrative made it seem a little underwhelming. The basic problem is that there’s not much motive given to the characters, and at times, the writing seems to be very superficial, repetitive and shallow. The entire North Korea-South Korea conflict is totally wasted, as the writers just touch upon it and refrain from exploring the depths of the matter. If the filmmaker and his team of writers had created a lighthearted narrative solely for the purpose of entertainment, then I believe things would have still been fine. But Valiant One tries to pretend it’s a serious drama, and that’s where it falls short by a margin.

Spoiler Alert

What happened during the mission?

The American unit at the Camp Humphreys base in Pyeongtaek, South Korea,...

‘A Complete Unknown’ & ‘The Brutalist’ Hold In Top 10; Documentary ‘No Other Land’ Sees Solid NYC Debut – Specialty Box Office
Image
Oscar-nominated No Other Land scored among highest per screen openings for a documentary in the last year, grossing an estimated $26.1k on one screen at the Film Forum in New York City.

With the Academy Awards a month away, much-nominated A Complete Unknown and The Brutalist are holding in the top ten. All We Imagine As Light by Indian director Payal Kapadia and I’m Still Here by Brazil’s Walter Salles crossed the $1 million mark.

It’s a quiet period for indie openings.

New this weekend: No Other Land by a collective of Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers and activists chronicles the Israeli military’s incremental expulsion of the West Bank community of Masafer Yatta — home to 20 ancient Palestinian villages. It has swept most major prizes since premiering at the Berlin Film Festival, where it Won Best Documentary and the Audience Award. Quick Links'Valiant One' Is an Immersive and Electrifying Action ThrillerStokes Fully Commits to Embodying a U.S. Army Soldier in 'Valiant One'

Outer Banks breakout star Chase Stokes is once again showcasing his leading man skills by headlining the action war thriller Valiant One, in which the Netflix alum appears as Captain Edward Brockman, a soldier who has never seen much of the battlefield and feels more content doing tech work than engaging in dangerous combat. When the helicopter he's traveling on crashes in North Korea, Brockman must discover his courage and strength and lead the inexperienced tech specialists through enemy territory to safety.

Valiant One features the additional talents of famous faces like Lana Condor and Desmin Borges, with both the cast members and director Steve Barnett going to great lengths to ensure that Valiant One provides an authentic and honorable look at the lives of resilient American...

Quick LinksWhat Is 'Valiant One' About?Chase Stokes Can Carry Leading Roles With EaseAnd Has the Potential To Do More

Ever since Chase Stokes landed the role of John B. Routledge in Netflix’s wildly popular series Outer Banks, his fanbase has grown exponentially, and understandably so. As the ringleader of the Pogues, John B acts as an anchor for the show and is undoubtedly one of Outer Banks’ most beloved characters. Given his charisma and charm, Stokes’ presence onscreen is alluring and delightful to watch. Relatively new to the business, Stokes doesn’t have a slew of major acting credits to his name. However, thanks to his big break with Netflix, that’s beginning to change, which means there’s much more for fans of the actor to enjoy.

Since scoring the role of John B, Stokes’ landed a recurring role in the 2021 Prime Video thriller series Tell Me Your Secrets.

Valiant One Review: A Flawed Military Thriller That Still Impresses At Times
Image
Last Updated on February 3, 2025

Plot: With tensions between North and South Korea, a US helicopter crashes on the North Korean side, now the survivors must work together to protect a civilian tech specialist and find their way out without the help of US military support.

Review: A war film starring two actors who appear in popular teen dramas from Netflix doesn’t exactly scream high quality. And given the time of the year, it’s easy to go into Valiant One with rock-bottom expectations. And I think that mindset will only help the film as it’s surprisingly competent in nearly all aspects. As evidenced throughout indie action, it’s really hard to accomplish believable action on a budget. And seeing as how that’s the main draw for most people, it needs to be handled competently. So I was very impressed with how much Valiant One was able to...

Box Office Update: Dog Man chomping on Companion despite good reviews
Image
Last Updated on February 3, 2025

Earlier this week, we predicted that Dog Man was going to take a huge bite out of Companion’s opening weekend, and it looks like the gulf between both is getting wider as the weekend goes on. Dog Man, which is an animated spin-off of the Captain Underpants series, is opening much higher than we expected, with it likely to earn a massive $35 million at the weekend box office. By comparison, Deadline is revealing that Drew Hancock’s Companion might not break the $10 million mark this weekend, with it opening in a distant second place.

Now, the news isn’t all bad for Companion. Sporting excellent reviews (including from our own Tyler Nichols), and a solid B+ CinemaScore (very high for a horror flick), word of mouth should be good. Horror fans might discover this one in the coming weeks, although it will have steep competition from the gory rom-com,...

‘No Other Land’, Oscar Nominated Documentary By Palestinian-Israeli Collective, Debuts At Film Forum – Specialty Preview
Image
No Other Land, Academy Award-nominated for Best Documentary Feature, opens today in New York at Film Forum from mTuckman Media/Cinetic Media with a limited theatrical expansion next weekend.

The doc is written, directed, produced and edited by a collective of Palestinian and Israeli activists and filmmakers — Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor. It premiered at Berlin, winning Best Documentary, followed by a widely decorated festival sweep. It sits at 100% with Critics on Rotten Tomatoes (57 reviews). Deadline’s Matthew Carey interviews the filmmakers here.

The release started circulating against the backdrop of the brutal Israel-Hamas war, currently in a period of ceasefire. It predates the war but explores root causes of enmity as the filmmakers chronicle the Israeli military’s incremental expulsion of the West Bank community of Masafer Yatta — home to 20 ancient Palestinian villages.

Over a period of five years (2019–23), Masafer Yatta resident and Palestinian...

‘Valiant One’ Review: No-Nonsense Action-Thriller About U.S. Soldiers Trapped in North Korea Gets the Job Done
Image
An unpretentious B-movie made with A-grade effort, “Valiant One” packs decent action and mostly sturdy drama into the tale of U.S. soldiers whose mission near the Dmz goes haywire and leaves them stranded in North Korea. The first film directed by longtime producer and production executive Steve Barnett (“300”) doesn’t add anything to the “trapped behind enemy lines” playbook but does offer a pacy combination of well-executed combat scenes and reluctant-hero drama that should play especially well with military movie buffs. Boasting solid central performances by Chase Stokes (“Outer Banks” series) and Lana Condor (“To All the Boys” films), “Valiant One” opens in limited U.S. cinemas on Jan. 31.

“Valiant One” is the kind of mid-size action movie we’ve seen much less of in commercial theatrical release since these straight-to-streaming days began. Though lacking the scale of a big-budget spectacular — it’s no “Black Hawk Down” — the...

Valiant One Review — Chase Stokes and Lana Condor Star in a Recycled American Action Film
Image
Movies like Valiant One, a new “American” action thriller from Steve Barnett, who co-wrote the dud with Eric Tipton, can go well beyond frustrating. Sure, the film has good intentions, trying to portray servicemen and women in a positive, albeit grueling, light. Does that mean we must treat the subject matter with such a contrived story?

Yet, even with the action film’s limited budget, time and care for the plot are jettisoned in favor of a political slant we have seen thousands of times before. However, none of that can cover the lousy acting, gaping plot holes, and puzzling character decisions that make you want to pull your hair out. Yet, Hollywood keeps recycling these movies, and we keep gobbling them up.

Mel Gibson's Panned 'Flight Risk' Tops Box Office With Disappointing Haul
Image
Flight Risk landed the top spot at the weekend box office, but the Mark Wahlberg-led action thriller only managed to make an estimated $12 million domestically (per The Numbers). Unfortunately, Lionsgate’s second No. 1 movie of the year — Den of Thieves 2: Pantera being the other — premiered during the lowest-grossing weekend of 2025 ($66.3 million) thus far. Certainly, the NFL stole some audiences as both the NFC and AFC Championship games aired on Sunday, Jan. 26, but it’s still a disappointment for the industry.

Historically, studios aren’t going to open any blockbusters in January because the month is typically a dead zone for the theatergoing experience. However, when compared to 2024, the numbers actually trended upward, even with the much-maligned Flight Risk leading the way. Over the fourth weekend of January a year ago, the box office’s domestic total of $56.6 million tallied $10 million less, even with a far more well-received title,...

Weekend Box Office: Flight Risk lands at #1 while 2024 sequels hang on tight
Image
Mel Gibson’s Flight Risk has taken off to become #1 at the box office this week, pulling in $12 million during its debut. This is a pretty unimpressive number to head the box office, and considering Flight Risk had a budget of $25 million, it has a bit of a way to go to recoup its expenses. But those that did check it out over the weekend no doubt did so in part to support Gibson, who hasn’t directed a movie since 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge.

Flight Risk’s take – which we knew would help it get to #1 this weekend based on early projections – would also mean the dethroning of franchise fare at the 2025 box office so far. Even though we’re still in January, it’s worth noting that there have only been sequels at the top of the box office so far this year: Mufasa: The Lion King (a late...

Familiar faces returned to Poguelandia on Saturday. As the cast and crew of “Outer Banks” celebrated the premiere of Season 4 Part 2 at a fan event in Santa Monica, some of the stars also teased future projects.

Chase Stokes will be seen starring as a U.S. Army tech specialist in the action thriller “Valiant One.” “My character isn’t your traditional soldier,” Stokes told Variety. “He’s somebody who’s working at a desk on a base and gets put into a very unconventional situation for himself. So it’s a little bit of a hero’s journey.”

He discussed the parallels between his “Valiant One” character and Glen Powell’s portrayal of Gary Johnson in “Hit Man.” While both actors play unassuming characters thrust into combat roles, Stokes shared his interest in working in a creative capacity behind the camera as well.
