Julia Garner won two consecutive Emmy Awards for her performance as Ruth Langmore in Netflix's "Ozark." With a spitfire Missouri accent that permanently bonded itself to the character by accident during her audition, Ruth is a role Garner fully inhabits, so much so that it might surprise some viewers to learn the actress grew up in the Bronx.
To get into Ruth's headspace, Garner did more than just adopt an accent. According to Rolling Stone magazine, she also wrote a diary from Ruth's perspective, as she had done with her Mormon teen character when she had her first lead role in the 2012 independent film, "Electrick Children."

Stranger Things director Rebecca Thomas has landed another high-profile movie directing gig. A couple weeks ago it was announced that she would be developing a James Wan-produced sci-fi-thriller called Malignant.
THR is now reporting that she has been hired by Amblin Entertainment to direct another sci-fi film called Intelligent Life. The original script for the film was written by Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World, Star Wars: Episode IX) and Derek Connolly. Thomas will do some work on the script as well.
The story centers on a U.N. delegate tasked with being Earth's representative when humanity makes contact with alien life, and then he falls in love with a mysterious woman who turns out to be an alien.
This certainly sounds like the kind of film that Amblin would make. Trevorrow and producer Frank Marshall offered a joint statement, saying:

Stranger Things director Rebecca Thomas has just landed a feature film directing gig for producer James Wan. She will be directing a sci-fi action thriller titled Malignant which is based on the Boom! Studios comic book Malignant Man, which Wan co-created.
The story focuses on Alex Gates, a patient dying of a terminal disease who is resigned to his fate … until it’s discovered that his malignant tumor is actually a mysterious alien parasite. Now imbued with some incredible powers and a renewed purpose, Gates is tasked with fighting a secret army lurking behind the veils of society while also peeling back his own secrets.
Sounds like it could make for a fun movie! It's set up at 20th Century Fox and the script is being written by Zak Olkewicz, who was a producer on the horror film Lights Out.

For the Us filmmaking duo, developing their sci-fi nostalgia-trip TV series Stranger Things was the culmination of a well-spent youth.
Growing up in North Carolina in the 1980s, twins Matt and Ross Duffer developed a love for genre and sci-fi with a particular passion for Steven Spielberg movies and Stephen King novels.
In a formative life event, echoing the plot of Jj Abrams’ Spielberg-inspired Super 8, the pair were gifted a video camera during third grade and began making amateur films.
Relocating to California to study film at Chapman University, the duo graduated in 2007 and immediately began taking steps into the movie business, collaborating on a series of short films and feature screenplays. Warner Bros optioned their post-apocalyptic horror script Hidden in 2011, and hired the brothers to direct Alexander Skarsgard and Andrea Riseborough in the film, which was released in 2015. While that project did not instantly propel them to stardom, the script...

Among many other things, part of what made Netflix’s Stranger Things a super smash-hit when it arrived last summer on the streaming service was how much it leaned into its numerous horror movie influences.
At the crux of this, of course, was the terrifying creature nicknamed the “Demogorgon” by Mike, Eleven and their friends, which hails from the mysterious realm called the Upside Down. An unstoppable monster with a face like a Venus flytrap, it won’t be easy to top in the second season. Still, the showrunners think they might have actually managed it.
Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy spoke to YouTuber GoldDerby about the new season recently and promised that things will get much darker and more dangerous when the hit series returns.

Andrew Stanton, the director of Pixar's Finding Dory and Finding Nemo will helm two episodes of Stranger Things season two. Like the rest of the world, Stanton is a big fan of the series, so he called up executive producer Shawn Levy, who told EW:
“Andrew called me out of the blue and said, ‘I love it. I would be honored to be part of it.'”
So they hired him to direct episodes five and six of the second season. I think it's great that Stanton is taking another crack at a live-action project. He previously made the movie John Carter for Disney, which I thought was a good movie, but it didn't do very well with most critics and it completely bombed at the box office.

Day by day, we’re beginning to get a better sense of what to expect from Stranger Things season 2. There’s the Eggos, the ’80s references, along with a whole new breed of supernatural horror, which together form part of Matt and Ross Duffer’s strategy of balancing the old with the new.

At just 19 years old, Chloe Moretz has 55 movies under her belt, starting her acting career at just 7 years old. While Brie Larson may have been announced as Captain Marvel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, there’s still no word on who will direct the highly anticipated movie. Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) are penning the screenplay, but it appears as if Marvel Studios is taking their time when it comes to finding the right filmmaker for the job.
However, following the news that the shortlist had been whittled down to three names, Mashable reporter Jeff Sneider brings word that another contender may be in the mix.

According to Mashable's Jeff Sneider, there's another contender to help Captain Marvel for Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios. Rebecca Thomas, best known for directing 2012's Electrick Children, a surreal indie drama about, "a young Mormon girl living in an isolated compound who listens to music for the first time and believes she's become pregnant and must find the father of her miracle baby." Thomas seems to be a coveted up-and-comer as she's also attached to Universal's live-action Little Mermaid film starring Chloë Grace Moretz. For the Trees: Zada’s Moody Locale Squandered by Feeble Narrative
We’ve come to expect studios to unbosom their less desirable horror trinkets during the dawning of every new year, and the annual tradition is alive and well with the equivocally titled The Forest from first time director Jason Zada. On a positive note, it’s a return to more traditional formatting, a move away from the found footage items we usually find released in this quarter (The Devil Inside; Devil’s Due), and it’s also not a remake or a dubious sequel (The Last Exorcism Part II). The film adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale will be penned by Love Actually scribe Richard Curtis, and is set to star Chloe Grace Moretz as the titular character.
Thomas first gained attention for her 2012 indie Electrick Children, starring Julia Garner and Rory Culkin. Recently, she was tapped to direct the adaptation of the John Green's beloved Ya novel Looking For Alaska. The project is currently in pre-production.

With one of last year’s Sundance intoxicatingly cute natured discoveries in Lola Kirke (from Noah Baumbach’s Mistress America) toplining, the reasonable five-year morphing phase into a larger feature film canvas, and the welcomed addition of actress Breeda Wool who got to work with the same character, we could easily see this slice of Lgbt grab a coveted spot. While it might have the queer factor working for it, Awol, the feature film version actually stems from a 2011 Sundance premiered short of the same title. Production took place at the very beginning of the year with major thumbs up support from Tribeca Film Festival where the film (not yet finished) landed the Iwc Filmmaker Award and this past summer, Deb Shoval‘s feature debut was submitted to Champs-Elysées Film Festival’s Us in Progress. Chosen for Film Independent’s Fast Track and Ifp’s Narrative Completion Lab, Shoval...

The 50 Shades of Grey sequel is closing in on a director to oversee Christian and Anastasia's further big screen exploits.
House of Cards and Glengarry Glen Ross filmmaker James Foley is reportedly the frontrunner to replace Sam Taylor-Johnson on the erotic blockbuster sequel, 50 Shades Darker.
According to Deadline, Foley may also get signed up to direct the closing film in the trilogy 50 Shades Freed, and shoot both movies back-to-back.
Foley, who's also directed Halle Berry's Perfect Stranger, has emerged as the top choice for the job ahead of Mark Pellington (Arlington Road), Tanya Wexler (Hysteria) and Rebecca Thomas (Electrick Children).
50 Shades Darker will be written by Niall Leonard, the husband of series creator El James.
James is said to have clashed heatedly with Taylor-Johnson during the making of 50 Shades of Grey, leading to the director walking away from the follow-up.

Shortly after the release of Universal Pictures' blockbuster Fifty Shades of Grey, it was confirmed that director Sam Taylor-Johnson will not come back to make the movie sequel, Fifty Shades Darker. One month later, it was revealed that author E.L. James' husband, Niall Leonard, will write the screenplay adaptation, with the studio setting a February 10, 2017 release date. Today we have word from Deadline that filmmaker James Foley is the front runner to direct this hotly-anticipated follow-up.
This report also reveals that he may also sign on to direct the third installment, Fifty Shades Freed, which has been given a February 9, 2018 release date. The studio is still working out whether or not they should shoot both Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed back-to-back. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan are coming back to reprise their roles as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey.

As is the way of things, even as one John Green adaptation hits theaters, another is kicking into high gear. With Paper Towns arriving on screen this week, Paramount and director Rebecca Thomas are close to casting the leads in Looking for Alaska.
Charlie Rowe, who was at one point a contender for the role of Spider-Man, and Mitchell Hope, who’ll be seen in Disney’s Descendants later this month, are the finalists for the male lead in the coming-of-age drama, adapted from Green’s 2006 novel (his first).
Additionally, The Witch actress Anya Taylor-Joy is the frontrunner for the lead female role of Alaska Young. Immy Waterhouse, the younger sister of Insurgent actress Suki Waterhouse, is also vying for the part, along with two other actresses who are as of yet unnamed.

After last year’s massive success of The Fault in Our Stars—a film that grossed $307 million on a budget of just $12 million—author John Green suddenly found himself a “hot item” in the movie world. The studio that produced Fault, Fox 2000, quickly put together an adaptation of Green’s novel Paper Towns with the same screenwriters (Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber) and producers (Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen) as Fault, and with Paper Towns slated for release next month, it’s apparently time to push another Green adaptation into production. Looking for Alaska was Green’s first novel, and while a film adaptation has been in development for a few years (Sarah Polley was at one point in talks to write and direct), the movie gained momentum this February when “the gang” (ie. Neustadter, Weber, Godfrey, and Bowen) got back together on the Temple Hill Entertainment project. Now...

Grandma Trailer. Paul Weitz‘s Grandma (2015) movie trailer stars Lily Tomlin, Julia Garner, Marcia Gay Harden, and Judy Greer. Grandma‘s plot synopsis: “Self-described misanthrope Elle Reid has her protective bubble burst when her 18-year-old granddaughter, Sage, shows up needing help. The two of them go on a day-long journey that causes Elle to come to terms with her past and Sage to confront her future.”
Though this has only played at film festivals thus far, and the only synopsis we have is user-submitted on IMDb, according to Slashfilm,
Elle (Lily Tomlin), a onetime successful poet, abruptly breaks up with Olive (Judy Greer), her girlfriend of four months. But before she gets a chance to get overly sentimental, her granddaughter, Sage (Julia Garner), unexpectedly shows up with an emergency that requires money. With the clock ticking, the two set out in a vintage Dodge and drop in on Elle’s old friends and flames,...

The countryside community of Elwood has a problem, and a group of specially trained young adults are about the only ones equipped to take care of it. The problem lies with the living dead that shamble within the town’s boundaries now and then, threatening a dwindling number of uninfected humans in Zombie Killers: Elephant’s Graveyard, which Anchor Bay Entertainment is releasing on home media this winter.
Co-starring Billy Zane and Dee Wallace, Zombie Killers: Elephant’s Graveyard will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on February 3rd with a trio of behind-the-scenes featurettes. We have the official press release with full details:
“Beverly Hills, CA – The rural town of Elwood has always been a “bubble” against the backdrop of an organism-based epidemic where infected humans don’t die, instead they roam to spread the infection in a grisly, horrific way. Those who escape must survive—by any means necessary.

SXSW is upon us, with the festival kicking off today. And while there are plenty of starry attractions and movies, it's always worth keeping a good eye on the smaller films making their way to Austin. And one to keep your radar tuned to is Leah Meyerhoff's debut feature, "I Believe In Unicorns." Starring Natalia Dyer, Peter Vack, Julia Garner ("Electrick Children," "The Perks Of Being A Wallflower"), Amy Seimetz ("Upstream Color," "The Sacrament") and Toni Meyerhoff, this one tells the story of a romance that blooms between the imaginative and strong-willed teen Davina and an older boy. It's a relationship that will prove potentially rocky, but as this clip from the film highlights, the passion between the pair is very real, as they navigate young love. "I Believe In Unicorns" screens in Narrative Competition at SXSW, with the first screening on Sunday, March 9th. Watch below.

Mark Kermode: eating people runs in the family in this laudable Us remake
Americanised remakes of "foreign language" horror movies (from The Vanishing to The Ring to Let Me In et al) have tended too often to gut the cultural meat of the originals, leaving nothing more than a saleably glossy reanimated husk. While this English-language "companion piece" to a modern Mexican classic may not rival the fetid air or alarming impact of its source, it makes a firm fist of respectfully reinventing the key themes of Jorge Michel Grau's ravenous gem. The result is an ambitious (if somewhat uneven) slice of downbeat American gothic which interweaves grim melancholia with pointed satire, doomy portent and moments of gnawing revulsion.
