Anthony Mackie's new monster movie has continued a grim Rotten Tomatoes trend for the star. The Independent Spirit Award nominated actor debuted in the 2002 movie 8 Mile, which also starred Eminem and Mekhi Phifer. Since then, he has gone on to a wide variety of projects, though he is likely best known for playing Sam Wilson, also known as the Falcon and later Captain America, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This ongoing tenure in the franchise began with 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Other Anthony Mackie movies outside the MCU encompass a wide variety of genres. This includes the comedies What's Your Number?, The Night Before, and Playing It Cool as well as the dramas Brother to Brother, Million Dollar Baby, Half Nelson, and Detroit. He has also taken on several major television roles in the 2020s, including starring in Altered Carbon, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,...

Nearly every famous face in Hollywood has appeared in a low-budget movie at some point. For many, it happened at the start of their careers when they were still unknown, so they couldn't be choosy with roles. For others, the foray into direct-to-video movies happened at the tail end of their careers when they could no longer get big offers.

Apple TV+ dropped the trailer for the upcoming rom-com turned thriller “Ghosted,” which stars Chris Evans and Ana de Armas.
The trailer shows Evans’ character Cole certain that Sadie (de Armas) is not just “ghosting” him, or ignoring his texts, after one date. Convinced they are meant to be together, he travels to London in what he hopes to be a romantic gesture, only to discover Sadie is not the person he thought, and is actually part of the CIA. What ensues is a spy-thriller where “action speaks louder than words.”
De Armas joins the film after her recent Oscar nomination for “Blonde.” Her credits also include “Deep Water,” “Blade Runner 2049” and “No Time to Die.” Evans has played Captain America in several Marvel Cinematic Universe films, as well as performed in “Before We Go,” “Gifted” and “Playing It Cool.” Evans and de Armas previously acted together in “Knives Out” and “The Gray Man.

In an utterly accidental way, a box set devoted to the Archies, the infamous TV cartoon band of the Sixties, couldn’t have arrived at a timelier moment. Earlier this month, we lost the Monkees’ Michael Nesmith. The band’s musical gatekeeper, the one most preoccupied with the TV-generated combo being allowed to write its own songs and play on its own records, Nesmith famously rejected “Sugar, Sugar” — a bubblegum pop song as basic as it gets, brought to them by producer Don Kirshner.

There are some heavy hitters behind the Apple TV Plus limited series “Defending Jacob,” including Oscar, Emmy and Tony Award nominees and winner. Hulu is out with its list of new and expiring content for the month of September, and what better way to beat the back-to-school blues than with a whole bunch of binge-watching.
Among the new goodies coming next month is the 12th episode and season finale of horror anthology series “Into the Dark.” Out Sept. 6, the finale is called “Pure,” and is described as a female coming-of-age horror story in which a group of teenage girls perform a secret ritual at a “Purity Retreat.” When one of them begins to see a “supernatural entity,” a scary question is posed: “What is more dangerous: the demon they’ve unleashed, or the pressure to conform to their fathers’ expectations?” Scary indeed!

His history of underperforming at the box office makes predicting a post-Marvel career tricky.
If the image of a bearded, flannel-clad Chris Evans playing a single uncle isn’t enough to lure throngs of women to the movies, I don’t know what will. In his latest film, Gifted, Evans plays Frank Adler, the aforementioned single uncle to a spunky six year-old gifted child, Mary (Mckenna Grace). Frank is caring for his niece after the unexpected death of his sister and he yearns for the child to have a normal and healthy life. After he sends Mary off on her first day of school, her teacher, Bonnie (Jenny Slate), notices the child’s remarkable abilities and alerts the school’s principal. Mary is offered a chance to attend a prestigious school for gifted children, which Frank promptly declines. This kicks off a custody battle between Frank and his estranged mother, Evelyn...

The long-accepted rule in the film industry is that established names bring in the box office gold. Hollywood has always relied on big-name actors to guarantee them big box office. But is the trend changing now? Are fans now becoming less interested in A-list actors than in the characters they play?
A-List Hollywood stars get the big money because they bring in big profits for Hollywood studios. Or at least, they have up until now. Is the era of the A-Lister starting to fade? It’s possible, because in recent years, it seems that film fans have more interest in the role and less in the person playing the role. Look at what’s been happening to many A-lister in recent years.
Let’s take Johnny Depp, for instance. He used to play a variety of roles and could draw in crowds with his name alone. More recently, however, his...

Many argue that homage is the highest form of flattery – especially when it comes to film. If that is indeed the case, then Richard Linklater should be experiencing some extreme ego-inflation right about now – for Captain America himself has clearly chosen to tip his shield to the legendary indie director’s Before Sunrise with his directorial debut, Before We Go.
With Evans also taking the lead role, and Alice Eve (Star Trek Into Darkness) as his co-star, this romantic tale comes from the writer of Rain Man – Ronald Bass – along with Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair (both screenwriters of the Chris Evans movie Playing It Cool), as well as Jen Smolka (The Good Cook).
You can check out the official plot synopsis below:
“Flustered and fearful after a brush with a mugger, Brooke (Alice Eve) races through Manhattan’s Grand Central Station, desperate to catch the night’s last Boston-bound train.

Playing It Cool is another installment in the slowly-growing sub-genre of rom-coms that aim to despise themselves. Chris Evans stars as a screenwriter who has managed to get hired for his worst nightmare, writing a romantic comedy.
Billed only as The Narrator (or Me in the official synopsis below), Evans is a man convinced that love doesn’t exist, which obviously leads to his believing that rom-coms are inherently stupid. Even if love were out there – he’s willing to concede that it’s a popular idea – the genre doesn’t show anything that relates to real life.
Then he meets Her (Michelle Monaghan) at a fundraising event, and finds that he can’t stop thinking about her. In a twist that has our man shaking his fist at the world, he now finds himself rolling through the cliches of the genre he can’t stand, and still has to write.

The rom-com genre is full of movies with cynical leading men who wind up meeting that special girl that turns around their preconceived notions about love and relationships. But upon watching "Playing It Cool," you'd be forgiven for thinking the film's nameless romantic hero might be more in need of therapy than a female companion, to open up his eyes to the world of meaningful partnerships. When he says, "I actually think the whole idea of love is unrealistic and outdated," it must be remembered this is all because his mother left him as as child to be raised by his grandfather. This leads our sad sack dynamo to forever sabotage his own relationships whenever a woman confesses her love by saying, "I just don't see myself ever feeling myself the same way about you." But hey, he's willing to investigate the possibility of love being a real thing when...

Chris Evans is currently embodying the noble hero in his role as Captain America in "Avengers: Age Of Ultron." But in the upcoming romantic comedy "Playing It Cool," he plays something a little more relatable to many people: a regular young guy who has given up on love… until he meets that one special person. Joined by Aubrey Plaza, Luke Wilson, Martin Starr and Topher Grace, the film tells the story of a screenwriter tasked with writing a rom-com, but who has trouble finding a way in due to his own views on love. But that all changes when he meets a woman (played by Michelle Monaghan) at a party, but there's a problem: he never got her name. And in this exclusive clip, Evans tells his circle of pals about the person that has suddenly left him smitten, and which leads to a roundtable discussion on the nature of love.

Rom-com formula is given an exuberant meta-kitchen-sink overhaul in Playing It Cool, about a screenwriter (Chris Evans) who doesn't believe in love, which proves troublesome when he's hired to write a romantic-comedy script — and then meets a philanthropic woman (Michelle Monaghan) who rocks his world. Self-consciously referring to itself at every turn, Justin Reardon's film is awash in narration, flashbacks, animated vignettes, costume-heavy fantasy sequences, dance numbers, camera tricks, CG effects, graphical text, narrative leaps in time and location, and all manner of other clichéd devices, including Evans's ribald banter with his weird-but-cool best friends. Fortunately, those sidekicks are played by a host of uniformly funny supporting...

The success of the film relies on making the audience care for the characters and charming the hopeless romantic in them into submission. The question is can Chris “Captain America” Evans charm you by Playing it Cool? The answer is probably yes.
Chris Evans plays a screenwriter given the task of writing a script for a rom-com. Being the jaded type he...

Out of Afm we're getting some more info on a new movie we glimpsed by poster a few months back called Playing It Cool. We already knew it featured Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan, but now we have an expanded cast list and it's a doozy. Via an announcement that the picture was picked Vertical Entertainment we have an official cast list that includes Martin Starr, Aubrey Plaza, Patrick Warburton, Topher Grace, Luke Wilson, Anthony Mackie, Ioan Gruffudd, and Philip Baker Hall. We previously reported on some of this casting over two years ago when the picture was still called A Many Splintered Thing, but titles, like all things, change. The film was directed by Justin Reardon and written by Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair. Hit the jump for more on Playing It Cool and to check out the trailer, which we missed a few months back but are putting...

As if shooting your first lead film role doesn't come with enough pressure on its own, imagine doing so while Bill Murray is trying his best to make you crack up. But the young thespian was able to keep his composure. After spending several months in development, political drama-comedy blend Our Brand Is Crisis is now gearing up at top speed. David Gordon Green will call the shots with a cast that already includes Sandra Bullock and Billy Bob Thornton, and Anthony Mackie is now set to join them.Produced by Argo duo George Clooney and Grant Heslov, Crisis is adapted from Rachel Boynton’s 2005 documentary, which saw President Clinton’s former advisors James Carville and Stan Greenberg applying what they had learned in the trenches of American politics to a campaign in Bolivia, and the effects it has on the process.Thornton’s role is still being kept under wraps, but we do now know that Bullock will be “Calamity” Jane Bodine, a charismatic retired American political consultant known for quoting famous people when she’s making points. Peter Straughan wrote the script and Green will kick off shooting shortly.

Chris Evans explores the incessant rom-com theme of whether heterosexual males and females can ever be just friends in the first trailer for Justin Reardon‘s “Playing It Cool.” Originally titled the less clichéd “A Many Splintered Thing,” the Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair-scripted rom-com stars Evans, fresh from receiving U.S. distribution for his directorial debut “Before We Go,” as an aspiring action movie screenwriter who is forced by his agent, Bryan (played by Evans’ “Captain American: The Winter Soldier” co-star Anthony Mackie) to pay his dues with a rom-com in promise of a six-week action film set in Malaysia. I’m just going to put this out there: romantic comedies are now really hard to write. I mean, as a creative endeavour, it’s a full-on cliché minefield. To correctly balance all the elements required – chemistry, tension, humour, romance – while avoiding the most well-worn cinematic devices, is monumentally difficult. A fool’s errand, some might say. And yet, still they appear, because still writers try to bring something new and fresh to the genre. Still we buy those tickets, and sit in the dark – hoping to be pleasantly surprised, but knowing we will probably be disappointed.
So, here we are again, with a new trailer for another daring attempt. The film is titled Playing It Cool in this preview, but was previously known as A Many Splintered Thing. Does it achieve the impossible dream? Is this film that most elusive of treasures – that mythic creature that continually slips our collective grasp?...

Chris Evans plays a screenwriter who is trying to write a romantic comedy, only he is hindered by the fact that he doesn't believe in love himself. That all changes when he meets "Her" (Michelle Monaghan), a young woman he falls for before realizing that she's engaged. Using the power of his imagination, the writer tries to conquer "Her" heart. Anthony Mackie, Aubrey Plaza, Ashley Tisdale, Patrick Warburton, Giovanni Ribisi, Topher Grace, Ioan Gruffudd and Luke Wilson round out the ensemble cast in director Justin Reardon's romantic comedy, which doesn't have a release date in place at this time. Over the years there have been many romantic comedies that tried to subvert their own genre – from When Harry Met Sally to No Strings Attached. Despite pages upon pages of wry commentary and gentle mocking of romance tropes, however, even the most meta-humorous of these romcoms have a tendency to snap back into formula by the time they reach their closing chapter. Men and women can be just friends, and they can be just friends with benefits, but not as far as Hollywood is concerned.
The number of well-known romcoms where the guy doesn’t get the girl (or vice versa) can probably be counted on the fingers of one hand, and based on the trailer it doesn’t look like Playing it Cool (formerly titled A Many Splintered Thing), a new romcom starring Chris Evans ...

Following the trailer for Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper's reunion in Serena, yet another film that was shot in 2012, but has sat on a shelf for a couple years, has a trailer that has surfaced online. Playing It Cool (formerly called A Many Splintered Thing) marks the return of Captain America franchise star Chris Evans to the romantic comedy genre, and it's even a bit of a meta story as it sees him playing a screenwriter who gets pushed by his agent to write a romantic comedy to help boost his career. Captain America (Chris Evans) and Falcon (Anthony Mackie) team up to save the day, sorta, in the brand new trailer for the romantic comedy, Playing It Cool.

Chris Evans has played a whole lot of dark and troubled characters onscreen, from reluctant time-traveler Captain America in "The Avengers" to the leader of a class war in the futuristic "Snowpiercer." This trailer for "Playing It Cool," which was originally known as "A Many Splintered Thing," is a refreshing change of pace for the handsome star, as he plays a screenwriter who's suspicious of love.

If you haven't heard of Playing It Cool, you're not alone. People who have even heard of this story knew it by another name; A Many Splintered Thing. It seems today is the day when trailers for movies shot in 2012 and have been sitting on a shelf are finally arriving. In case you missed it, the first trailer for Susanne Bier's "Serena," starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, just dropped, and now comes the debut promo clip for "Playing It Cool" (which is either the international or new title as it was previously called "A Many Splintered Thing") and we're curious why this film has been collecting dust. Chris Evans might be serious about getting out of the acting game, but he's still got plenty of movies left in him before he departs. One of them is A Many Splintered Thing , which was shot a couple of years ago but is only now seeing release. We have our first look at the poster, seen above thanks to Teaser-Trailer, where Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan are either participating in yoga or engaged in a zero gravity deathmatch. As the prestigious Cannes Film Festival comes to a close today, perhaps it’s time to shift our ever-so-serious, “yeah, but is it Palme-worthy?” gaze elsewhere. And maybe we’ll point it at something less exalted, perhaps not to be esteemed at all, who knows? The upcoming relationship comedy “A Many Splintered Thing” was shot all the way back in 2012, and it still hasn’t been screened or released to the public. The movie stars Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan, plus Anthony Mackie, Patrick Warburton, Topher Grace and Giovanni Ribisi, and it’s about how unrequited love motivates a guy to write about his experience (I’m pretty sure that’s not even Grand Prix-worthy, but I could be wrong). Directed by first-time filmmaker Justin Reardon, the movie even has appearances by Aubrey Plaza, Martin Starr, Ashley Tisdale, Ioan Gruffudd, Luke Wilson, and Philip Baker Hall. So where is it?...
