Squid Game: The Challenge was completely inspired by the smash hit South Korean series on Netflix, adopting the same game for a reality show produced by Studio Lambert and ITV Studios’ The Garden. The program won best competition reality format at the ceremony on France’s south coast. The same company also took home the award for best returning format prize for its U.K. version of The Traitors.

Elsewhere, Fremantle was awarded best comedy format for the Portuguese Tvi show Freeze, and Banijay’s Upside Down, produced by Endemol Shine Nederland for Videoland, won the best-studio based format prize.

It looks like DC fans are going to have to wait a bit longer for a solo Mr. Freeze project. DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn has debunked a recent report stating that a Mr. Freeze project was about to enter production.

After Production Weekly listed a Mr. Freeze project as being in development, fans quickly flooded Gunn's Threads account with comments asking the DC boss if there was any truth behind the listing. While James Gunn is hard at work rebooting the DC cinematic universe, Matt Reeves is equally busy expanding his “Epic Crime Saga,” which began with 2022’s The Batman.

The Batman was designed to kick off a new trilogy and create a standalone, Batman-centric shared universe, dubbed the “Batman Epic Crime Saga.” By 2019, key cast members had already committed to future films.

Both Robert Pattinson and director Matt Reeves expressed interest in bringing characters like Robin and villains such as the Court of Owls, Mr. Freeze, and Hush into the sequels.

A sequel, The Batman – Part II, was confirmed in 2022 with Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves returning, and it’s slated for an October 2026 release following a delay.

Over the weekend, you might have spotted some chatter on social media about a Mr. Freeze movie being in the works. Based on information published in Production Weekly (which doesn't ever really mean much), it would be set in the same world as The Batman and The Penguin.

There are already rumblings about Mr. Freeze being The Batman - Part II's villain due to the sequel's winter setting, so a spin-off revolving around Dr. Victor Fries isn't too outlandish.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe is expanding with The Penguin, a spin-off series focusing on the titular villain releasing this month. Meanwhile, Reeves is expected to start production on the much-awaited second installment of his film series starring Robert Pattinson in the titular role. Magnify, the International sales arm of Magnolia Pictures, has acquired global and U.S. sales rights to Taiwanese thriller “Pierce” from first-time feature filmmaker Nelicia Low. An official teaser has now been released for the title ahead of its sales launch at the upcoming Marche du Film in Cannes.

“Pierce” follows Jie, a young fencer reconnecting with his estranged older brother Han, who mysteriously returns after seven years in juvenile prison for killing an opponent during a fencing competition. Asian TV channels operator Celestial Tiger Entertainment and myTV Super, the Ott platform of Hong Kong’s Television Broadcasts Limited (Tvb) are to launch PopC, a movie channel dedicated to Chinese online films, with content supplied by mainland China streamer iQiyi. It launches in Hong Kong from May 1.

“The idea of PopC first came about when we saw the amount of great, high quality movies that were being produced for the online space in China. The domestic reception and online hit rates for these movies are just phenomenal, and we want to bring them to an international audience outside of China by curating them all in one great channel.” said Ofanny Choi, CEO of Cte.

Its lineup will take on revolving themes on a daily basis, from fantasy-adventure, to Chinese heroes, suspense, action and comedy.

Fremantle has acquired global production rights to the Japanese format “Freeze.” The high-energy comedic game show, which has aired for two seasons in Japan, was developed and produced by Fany Studio and Yoshimoto Kogyo for Amazon Prime Video. It is Fany Studio’s first global deal since it was set up in May 2023.

In “Freeze,” contestants battle it out for a grand prize. The rules are simple: Players enter a closed room and simply must “freeze” until the presenter releases them. With traps and tricks along the way that provoke reaction from the players, such as flying mannequins and giant popping balloons, only those who remain still, will survive to battle it out for a place in the grand finale. Those who move, laugh or react the most will be eliminated. The player who remains still for the longest time throughout the game is crowned the winner and will receive a prize.

The 96th Academy Awards saw Oppenheimer taking home the most awards of the night, a fine selection of memorable speeches and even a dog in the audience. But some of the funniest moments of the Oscars came in between all of these. The DC Universe is full of powerful villains, and few are as powerful and terrifying as Darkseid. Now here’s what you call an old-fashioned ripping good yarn. Sidney Lumet shows in this movie that he was still at the top of his game at the age of eighty-three. HD cameras, a non-linear narrative…he handles it all with élan and delivers an edge of the seat crime thriller with a heart. A crime is just a deed, an action like any other. On Instagram, McFarlane posted a video of himself at New York Toy Fair 2023 showcasing the Batman & Robin figures, which will be a part of the DC Multiverse line. Cannibal Cabin, formerly Cannibal Lake, opens in 2002 with a trio of vacationers, one of whom is very pregnant, planning to spend a weekend jet skiing at a lake next to what looks like an abandoned scrap yard. Instead, they end up meeting a nasty end at the hands of a bunch of the kind of masked cannibals that tend to inhabit places like this.

From there we move to the present day where a group of friends including Matt, Jonah, and Chris are heading to a music festival they heard about from Faye whom Jen met at another festival while peeing behind a bush.

If this sounds familiar it’s probably because it is. They set off, bickering all the way only to find the shortcut Faye told them about leads to a closed road.

The Friday Fright Night feature we have for you this week is called An English Haunting – which doesn’t leave much question as to what sort of movie this might be. Of course it’s a haunted house movie. And this isn’t always a horror sub-genre that I get much enjoyment out of, because shots of creaky doors swinging open by themselves don’t do anything for me.

Joel Schumacher's 1997 film "Batman & Robin" is a large, clunky, over-designed nightmare. In his two-star review, Roger Ebert referred to the film as resembling "an art-deco garbage disposal," and there often appears to be a consensus that it remains, to this day, one of the worst comic book movies ever made. Director Schumacher has even gone on record apologizing to anyone who might have felt disappointed by his film.

"Batman & Robin," while following the same Batman continuity that began in 1989 with Tim Burton's "Batman," couldn't be farther from the original. Burton's film took visual cues from 1930s German expressionism film, and was shot using shadows and steam. "Batman & Robin" looks like a Las Vegas dance spectacular, rife with bright colors, swirling lights, and neon tubing. Even the film's central villain, Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger), has glittery silver skin, a glowing blue mouth, and a busy, light-up suit of armor.

The Batman 2 needs to avoid a key similarity with Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. The Batman introduced Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight in his second year of fighting crime in Gotham City. In Matt Reeves's story, The Batman also takes a deeper dive into the detective side of Batman than arguably any previous cinematic incarnation, with Batman in a battle of wits against the Riddler (Paul Dano).

The Batman serves as the launching pad for Matt Reeves Batman universe, which will encompass HBO Max spin-off shows like the Penguin series along with The Batman 2 continuing its story on the big screen. However, while the ending of The Batman sets up a new battle to save Gotham in The Batman 2, it also creates some potential similarities with the story of The Dark Knight Rises. This means that The Batman 2 will need to tailor its story to be...

The DC Animated Universe builds a shared universe involving DC animated shows and movies when watching the Dcau movies in order. While the concept of a shared universe became popular on the big screen thanks to the MCU, DC already saw its characters and storylines crossing over from one TV show to another since the late '90s. The crossovers between the Batman and Superman animated series led to the production of Justice League, and a full-fledged animated universe featuring DC's biggest heroes and villains like Darkseid was created.
