Prime Video is swarming with adaptations of best-selling novels, from Reacher and Bosch to The Summer I Turned Pretty and We Were Liars. However, only the latter two are currently on the streamer's Top 10 list.

According to FlixPatrol, as of Aug. 16, We Were Liars is ranked No. 5 on Prime Video's Top 10 TV Shows in the United States. Despite dropping all eight episodes at once on June 18, We Were Liars remains a streaming hit two months later, staying in the Top 5 behind Ballard, Countdown, Butterfly, and The Summer I Turned Pretty. The psychological thriller is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by E. Lockhart, which was first published by Delacorte Press in 2014.

Locarno, Switzerland — Making good on buzz among buyers at Locarno, the Steven Kostanski-directed and Raven Banner-sold “Deathstalker” has scored major territory pre-sales with Japan and German-speaking Europe before the sword and sorcery actioner world premieres at Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival.

These sales add to a preemptive deal with Shout! Studios for English-language territories, announced by Variety just before the Locarno festival.

Since then Raven Banner has closed Japan with Klockworx and Germany with Lighthouse, both deals struck at Locarno, the genre sales outfit announced Tuesday. Additional discussions are from Latin America, France, Benelux, Scandinavia and India, Raven Banner Entertainment Managing Partner Michael Paszt told Variety.

Tokyo-based, Klockworx has a strong line in Asian and international actioners, complemented by upscale fare such as Walter Salles’ Academy Award winner “I’m Still Here.”

In one of the widest-ranging deals to close in the runup to next week’s 78th Locarno Film Festival, Shout! Studios, a Radial Entertainment company, has acquired exclusive distribution rights in English-language territories to Steven Kostanski’s “Deathstalker,” a reboot of Roger Corman’s cult film series.

“Deathstalker” stars Daniel Bernhardt as the titular hero, playing him more as a grizzled war veteran, as he has commented, than the buff young heroes of the originals. Patton Oswalt provides the voice of Doodad, a benevolent wizened wizard.

The deal follows on Shout! Studios’ release of Kostanski’s “Frankie Freako” in 2024.

Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later is finally getting its digital release on July 29, 2025. That means fans will now get to watch the thriller from home without heading to the theaters. Released in cinemas on June 20, this terrifying new chapter in Boyle’s zombie saga is now just a click away on digital and PVOD platforms.

The film is the third part of the popular franchise that began with 28 Days Later in 2002 and continued with 28 Weeks Later in 2007. After nearly two decades, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland returned to bring the story back to life. And they’re not stopping here. This is just the beginning of a brand-new trilogy, with the next film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, already set to hit theaters in January 2026.

Now, while fans are excited to rent or buy the digital version, many are wondering when 28 Years Later arrives on Netflix.

Per Flix Patrol, We Were Liars ranks 4th on the Prime Video TV chart in the U.S., trailing a podium that includes Countdown, Ballard and The Summer I Turned Pretty. The series climbed two spots in its most recent ranking and returned to form, having topped Prime Video's chart on multiple occasions during its run.

Created by The Vampire Diaries' Julie Plec and Roswell brainchild Carina Adly McKenzie, We Were Liars is based on E. Lockhart's 2014 novel of the same name. Amazon MGM Studios picked We Were Liars in 2022, with the project being ordered to series the following year and assembling its cast last year, when it was filmed.

Ashley Benson, Emily Alyn Lind, Madelaine Petsch and Sadie Stanley have been tapped for the lead roles in “Pretty Babies,” an indie female friendship drama written and directed by Tyler-Marie Evans, who makes her feature debut.

Set to enter production later this summer, the film follows two teenage girls who run away to Hollywood, chasing stardom, but their dreams lead them into prostitution, trapping them in the dark underbelly of the sex work industry as they travel from Texas to California.

“’Pretty Babies’ is a love letter to Old Hollywood. We’re pushing into something new with this script, and

that excitement has been palpable from the start, and something felt by every collaborator,” said Evans.

A new book adaptation from Prime Video has led to another big win for Amazon's streaming service. We Were Liars is earning immediate chart success shortly after its debut.

Via Flix Patrol, We Were Liars is the top-ranked TV series on Prime Video globally. Debuting on June 18, 2025, the thriller became an immediate hit -- leading a Prime Video chart featuring high-profile shows such as The Better Sister and Countdown.

Based on the best-selling 2014 novel of the same name by E. Lockhart, We Were Liars centers on Cady Sinclair Eastman (played by Emily Alyn Lind), a teenager from an upstanding and wealthy family who often spends her summers on a private island. Following a terrible car accident that leaves her with memory loss, Cady's life changes forever as she learns everyone in her family and her friends are all hiding secrets. Cady also realizes that she has issues she must confront.

UK Studio Shinfield Secures $340M Financing

Shinfield Studios has secured £250M ($340M) in financing. The Brit studio, which has filmed Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and The Acolyte, completed construction last year in the south of England. Owner Shadowbox has secured the financing for Shinfield via Apollo-managed funds and the huge sit is now fully operational. It is one of a number of UK studios that has become home to big American projects. “We are tremendously proud of what we’ve accomplished since fully opening Shinfield Studios last year,” said Peter Rumbold, CEO of Shadowbox Studios. “Shadowbox’s business model is predicated on providing modern, high-quality film infrastructure, and today’s announcement both marks a major milestone for Shinfield and further validates the importance of purpose-built facilities within the global production landscape.” Shadowbox also runs a nine-stage, 850,000-square-foot campus in Atlanta, Georgia and is developing a 10-stage, 500,000-square-foot studio on Australia’s Gold Coast.

If reviews are any indication of viewership, it looks like Prime Video will have another hit on its hands. Following the debut of We Were Liars on June 18, the Rotten Tomatoes score for the psychological thriller series has been unveiled.

With 16 reviews counted at the time of writing, We Were Liars is currently "fresh" at 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, the review aggregator website lists a 76% audience approval rating. It's not often that audiences and critics agree on a show (or movie), so this is a good sign that We Were Liars, based on the best-selling novel of the same name by E. Lockhart, is one worth checking out. As we near the half year point of 2025 for the domestic box office, which is currently running at $3.7 billion (+23% over 2024) for Jan. 1-June 15 frame, Disney Studios is leading all majors with $1.1 billion.

Can a movie be classified as both underwhelming at the box office and still successful? Karate Kid: Legendsrecently hit the $90 million mark at the worldwide box office, which means that it has now officially broken even, considering its reported budget of $45 million. It will also likely pass the coveted $100 million mark this weekend, cementing its status as a hit. But in comparison to its predecessor, the 2010 reboot The Karate Kid, it's a massive letdown. That movie made over $350 million globally, and featured an unusually restrained dramatic performance from the megastar Jackie Chan. He returned for Karate Kid: Legends, which has now overtaken several of his past movies.

Most recently, Karate Kid: Legends leaped past Chan's Shanghai Knights, the 2003 sequel to Shanghai Noon. Directed by David Dobkin, the movie made $88 million worldwide against a reported budget of $50 million. Shanghai Knights featured Owen Wilson alongside Chan, and received mixed reviews from critics.

The production of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is building an even bigger all-star cast list. Lionsgate is now announcing that Glenn Close has been cast as Drusilla Sickle, the cruel escort to the District 12 Tributes, and three-time Tony Award winner Billy Porter has been cast as Magno Stift, her estranged husband and the Tributes’ uninspired designer.

On Close joining the cast, Producer Nina Jacobson said, “Glenn Close is a dream Drusilla. She brings so much of her intellect and imagination to each role, creating characters who are unforgettable and iconic. Amazon Prime Video has renewed “Maxton Hall – The World Between Us” for Season 3. The new season will follow the third book in Mona Katsen’s book series, continuing James and Ruby’s story at the opulent boarding school. Per Ghostbusters News, the latest piece of major Ghostbusters merchandise is set to come courtesy of Crocs. The new footwear, dubbed the Ghostbusters Classic Clog, features glow-in-the-dark ectoplasm splotches, proton pack stylings, and detailed ornaments of one of the franchise's iconic ghost traps as well as its de facto mascot, Slimer. The right shoe is capable of letting out a proton pack sound effect, while the left features a velcro strip which can be adorned with Ghostbusters name tags for Winston Zeddemore, Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Egon Spengler.

Big casting news has been revealed for Boston Blue, the upcoming Blue Bloods offshoot that brings back original series star Donnie Wahlberg. Set to air this fall, taking over the Friday 10 Pm time slot previously held by Blue Bloods, Boston Blue will see Wahlberg reprising his role as Danny Reagan.

Per Deadline, it's just been revealed that one of Wahlberg's new co-stars will include Ghostbusters legend Ernie Hudson. His casting follows the addition of Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery). The show picks up after Danny takes a position with Boston Pd with Detective Lena Silver (Martin-Green) serving as his new partner. Lena is the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family, not dissimilar to the Reagans in Blue Bloods.

Exclusive: Ernie Hudson has been tapped as a series regular opposite Donnie Wahlberg and Sonequa Martin-Green in CBS’ upcoming Blue Bloods universe series Boston Blue which will debut this fall, airing in Blue Bloods’ Friday 10 Pm time slot.

In Boston Blue, Wahlberg will reprise his Blue Bloods role as NYPD Officer Danny Reagan as he takes a position with Boston Pd. Once in Boston, he is paired with Detective Lena Silver (Martin-Green), the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.

Hudson will play the Silver family patriarch, Reverend Peters, a renowned pastor of an historic Baptist church in Boston. An open-minded, welcoming man that is comfortable in all traditions, he is happy to preside at his church’s traditional Sunday Baptist service. Reverend Peters is the father of Mae Silver, Boston’s District Attorney, and grandfather of Det. Lena Silver (Martin-Green), Superintendent Ashley Silver, and rookie patrol cop, Isaac Silver.

The cast of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is quickly coming together, and Deadline reports that the latest addition to the prequel movie will be Lili Taylor. She will play Mags, the former Hunger Games champion who volunteered for the 75th Hunger Games seen in Catching Fire. In the new film, she will serve as a mentor to the District 12 tributes, which includes a young Haymitch Abernathy.

Sunrise on the Reaping will star Joseph Zada (Invisible Boys) as Haymitch, Whitney Peak (Hocus Pocus 2) as Lenore Dove Baird, Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire) as Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons (Civil War) as Plutarch Heavensbee, Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Mufasa: The Lion King) as Beetee, and Maya Hawke (Stranger Things) as Wiress.

Sony Pictures Entertainment saw profit jump 70% in the March quarter to $354 million on lower theatrical marketing costs. Revenue for the three months, Sony’s fiscal fourth quarter, was essentially flat at $2.7 billion.

Paddington in Peru was a hit in Q1, a notably quiet one for Hollywood. While Marvel's Thunderbolts* dominated headlines this weekend after topping the domestic box office charts for the second time in a row, an indie comedy was setting its own records. Released in just six New York and Los Angeles theaters, Friendship delivered the biggest debut for a limited release this year. The movie grossed over $451,000 in its first three days of release, delivering a per-theater average of $75,000. By comparison, Thunderbolts*' per-theater average for the weekend stood at $7,600.

Friendship stars Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson in the lead roles; the movie premiered at last year's Toronto International Film Festival to excellent reviews, and is poised to emerge as a crowd-pleaser of the topmost order when it expands nationwide in a few weeks. Robinson plays a suburban dad whose quest to make a new adult friend leads him to his charismatic neighbor, played by Rudd. Their blossoming friendship threatens to derail their lives.

One of Paul Rudd's most memorable movie roles nearly didn't happen. On the latest episode of Good Hang with Amy Poehler, the actor recalled his audition for Amy Heckerling's Clueless, where he was asked to read for the part of Josh Lucas, and how a spontaneous decision could have cost him his big break. Sony Pictures is using Roblox to help introduce Karate Kid: Legends to today’s younger audience. The original Karate Kid came out in 1984, and many of its fans are now adults. But with a new movie coming soon, Sony wants to get Gen Z and Gen Alpha interested, and what better place than Roblox, a platform where kids and teens spend a lot of their time?

To do this, Sony is partnering with Gamefam, a company that makes games in the “metaverse” and focuses on younger players. Together, they’ve created a new Roblox experience called the Karate Kid Training Simulator, which launches on May 2.

The game comes out just before the new movie’s release on May 30 in the U.S. and Canada.

Late star Hoffman first brought the Head Gamemaker and rebellion leader character to the screen in “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1,” with “Part 2” being his final film role. Plemons’ take on Plutarch in the prequel film will begin in District 12 with the reaping of the Tributes.
