Jon Hamm adopts a dangerous, illegal revenue stream in the first trailer for Apple TV+’s “Your Friends and Neighbors.”
Hamm stars in the new drama from “Banshee” creator Jonathan Tropper as Andrew “Coop” Cooper, a hedge fund manager whose picturesque life in the exceedingly affluent Westmont Village community is first disrupted by his sudden divorce from his wife (Amanda Peet). When he is then unexpectedly fired in disgrace, Coop decides to start robbing the homes of his rich neighbors in order to maintain his wealthy facade.
“Life boils down to a series of interconnected decisions,” Coop says in the “Your Friends and Neighbors” trailer. “No one would ever suspect a guy like me.” As confident as he may be about his turn to petty crime, though, it looks like it won’t take long for Hamm’s antihero to find himself caught up in an increasingly dangerous web of secrets and lies.

Making art about art often leads to an interesting, meta experience. From dramas like Tick, Tick… Boom! to comedies like Theater Camp to satires like Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), many films have tackled the unique challenges and beauty of making theater specifically. Seven Veils follows this tradition, though it leans into psychological thriller elements to do so. The film follows a director named Jeanine (Amanda Seyfried), who grapples with repressed trauma as she mounts a production of the operaSalome.

Before Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain” heads into Oscars weekend with two nominations following a fruitful awards season as a critical darling for Searchlight Pictures, who acquired the film during a late-night bidding war following the Sundance premiere, it’s hard to believe the film was turned down by nearly every single distributor they approached originally.
In the wake of those “discouraging” rejections, Eisenberg, who also stars in the film alongside Kieran Culkin, decided to try out the independent financing route through Topic Studios, whose previous films include “Spencer,” “Roman J. Israel, Esq.,” “Theater Camp,” “Leave No Trace,” the Best Picture Oscar winner “Spotlight” and many more.
“When we met Topic, it was such a great relief, because they loved the movie. They understood that the tone was unusual, and they appreciated the movie for what it is, as opposed to questioning it or wanting it to be something different,...

If you were planning on discounting the upcoming "Barney" movie entirely, you might want to think again — because Ayo Edebiri has been tapped to write the script.
Mattel Films and A24 are teaming up for a "Barney" movie, and not only will Edebiri write it but, according to the official press release announcing the news, she may also star in the film as well. (Specifics on Edebiri's potential role aren't clear as of this writing.) Meanwhile, the movie is being produced by another industry powerhouse in the form of Oscar-winner Daniel Kaluuya, whose company 59% Productions is behind the project.
This is definitely an encouraging and, frankly, bizarre update (in a good way) when it comes to the "Barney" movie. So, what else do we know?
Well, in 2023, Kevin McKeon, a Mattel executive, revealed that the movie about the beloved purple dinosaur will be a lot weirder (and cooler?) than you probably expected.

The 2025 Sundance Film Festival turned out to be a low-key affair, but it got off to a rousing start with a $15 million world rights sale of Together, the body horror film acquired by Neon. Starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie, it gives Neon a chance to follow up the rousing genre success of Longlegs last year.
Together, which also has landed a berth at SXSW, is written/directed by Michael Shanks. Franco and Brie are a couple that moves to the countryside and a supernatural encounter begins an extreme transformation of their love, their lives, and their flesh. It was a real crowd pleaser to the Midnight Madness audience.

Everyone remembers high school differently. For some, high school was an era of overachievement, leading to a false sense of how competitive life can become outside the hallowed halls of judgment, ridicule, and misguided lust. For others, high school is a specter of the past better left behind after years of jeers, rumors, and misinformation about how the world functions. For The Bear‘s Molly Gordon, high school is the setting of her new comedy project with A24 called Peaked.
As the film’s title suggests, Peaked focuses on the glory days of prom planning and experimentation and that fleeting time when we feel invisible. According to the official logline, the film follows “the two girls who traumatized you in high school as they try to relive their glory days at their 10-year reunion.” You remember them. The independent film community settling into Park City where the next crop of indie films will launch at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival has something to celebrate: a 2024 where audiences turned out and started to turn the market around.
“In the independent theatrical world post-Covid, we were asking ‘Are we going to exist?’ And the answer is, ‘Yes. We can’,” says producer Erik Feig, founder and CEO of Picturestart. “These movies are working on a financial level. They are working on a cultural level, and that’s what theatrical movies are all about.”
“I’m feeling that there’s definitely more opportunity bubbling around in terms of the audiences that are showing up,” agrees Lia Buman, co-founder of Tango Entertainment. “And then, when a film is hitting its target with its audience, that’s how word of mouth builds and then that’s how they grow and grow. It’s almost old school.

Ahead of the Oscar nominations being unveiled, USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and the Adobe Foundation have released a new edition of their Inclusion List, with a focus on movies.
The top-scoring movies for supporting gender inclusion on screen and behind the cameras were A Thousand and One, You Hurt My Feelings, The Marvels, Priscilla and Barbie. For race and ethnicity, the top-scoring movies were Joy Ride, A Thousand and One, The Color Purple, House Party and The Blackening.
In an earlier Inclusions List, 476 theatrically released movies from 2019 to 2023 were analyzed, with on screen and behind-the-camera data used to determine the 150 most inclusive films in that four-year period. The latest Inclusion List builds on that ranking with a new set of films from 2023.

The second iteration of The Inclusion List from Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative has identified the 150 most inclusive films from 2019 to 2023, adding to its initial class of 100 films by naming 50 new titles for the year 2023.
Four films from that year have made it into the Top 10 Most Inclusive Films for that timespan, according to the study released Wednesday, with A Thousand and One taking the No. 2 spot overall, Bottoms coming in seventh, The Color Purple ninth and The Blackening in 10th.
The list’s point system took into account talent both in front of and behind the camera, with a total of 20 points broken down into 10-point halves for both on-screen and off-screen inclusion. Two distinct processes were used, one for leads/co-leads and the other for all speaking characters. A film could earn up to 10 points for on-screen inclusion based on the five inclusion indicators across leads/co leads (up to 5 points) and all speaking characters (up to 5 points).
A Thousand and One ranks second with a score of 13.6/20, while Bottoms scores a 12.2/20. The Color Purple and The Blackening are tied with a score of 11.8/20. The highest scoring film on the list remains Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King (2022) with a 15/20.
The list also evaluated 2023 films displaying the best inclusivity across five categories: gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability, and age. It named five of the most inclusive 2023 films within each of those categories.
The 2023 films that scored the highest for the gender indicator of inclusion were A Thousand and One, You Hurt My Feelings, The Marvels, Priscilla and Barbie. A Thousand and One also scored high on the race/ethnicity list alongside 2023’s Joy Ride, The Color Purple, The Blackening and House Party. In the LGBTQ+ category, the top five films of 2023 were All of Us Strangers, Theater Camp, Bottoms, Knock at the Cabin and Saltburn. 2023 releases ranking high in the disability category included What Happens Later, John Wick: Chapter 4, Moving On, Golda and The Holdovers. Films from 2023 that scored highest in their representation of age on the big screen were Moving On, Book Club: The Next Chapter, Marlowe, The Miracle Club and Golda.
Researchers also took into consideration the race and ethnicity of crew members in the roles of director, writer, producer, cinematographer, editor, composer, production designer, costume designer, casting director and assistant director.
The second Inclusion List also names 25 top achievers across inclusion metrics and 50 new winners for 2023 cinema. Released Jan. 22, the results calls attention to directors, editors and distributors involved in projects with the highest percentage of women and people of color employees who aided in the process of production from start to finish line.

A panel discussing the results featuring Smith, Sumi Parekh, Executive Director, Group Effort Initiative, Tracy Oliver, Screenwriter, Director, Producer and Showrunner, Jesse Williams, Actor, Director, Activist, Dewayne Perkins, Writer, Actor, Producer, and Amy White, Global Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Adobe, is set for Friday at Adobe House on the ground at the Sundance Film Festival.

Listen up, The Bear fans. Ever since Ayo Edebiri stepped into the kitchen and became a standout in the ensemble of TV’s most beautifully stressful show, we’ve been waiting for her to take centre stage. From Bottoms, to Theater Camp, to Inside Out 2, she’s since proved herself as a comedy master – but in Opus, Edebiri finally takes the lead. The A24 thriller marks the writer-directorial feature debut of Mark Anthony Green, unspooling a mystery around a reclusive legendary pop star, who announces his return to much excitement. But when Edebiri’s journalist is invited to his private compound, it seems there’s more than meets the eye about her hero. Check out the trailer:
Given A24’s track record for putting out bold, original films, hopes for Opus are high – and this is an intriguing first trailer, promising a thriller (perhaps almost-horror) in a similar vein...

“There’s no cult like celebrity” goes the tagline for “Opus,” Mark Anthony Green’s new thriller. Looking like a cross of “Don’t Blink Twice,” “The Menu,” and “Almost Famous,” the film from A24, out in theaters March 14, is about a reclusive rock star named Moretti (John Malkovich) who’s suddenly releasing a new album after almost 30 years. Watch the trailer for “Opus” below.
As part of his album release, Moretti invites select press, including Ayo Edebiri, Juliette Lewis, and Murray Hamilton to his remote compound where he lives like a prince. And he draws them into a dangerous game where his motives are sinister at best. Edebiri’s movie career has taken off since she rocketed to stardom with FX’s “The Bear.” “Opus” follows her roles in “Bottoms,” “Theater Camp,” and “The Sweet East,” and voice role in “Inside Out 2.”

Writer-director Mark Anthony Green’s feature hits theaters March 14 following its forthcoming premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 27. Rounding out the cast are Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, Amber Midthunder, Stephanie Suganami, Young Mazino and Tatanka Means.
Opus centers on Ariel, a young writer sent to visit pop star Alfred Moretti (Malkovich), who has resurfaced after disappearing for 30 years. When she arrives, Ariel realizes that Moretti is a figure of obsession for those around him, which aids his nefarious plans.
“What is it that you guys do?” Edebiri asks Malkovich in the trailer. This leads him to respond, “Would you like to see?”
Later, a distressed Edebiri asks someone, “Is this not alarming to you?”

Gen-z movies explore the impact of the internet on social rules and young minds, making trends shift quickly. Millennials are creating promising films for Gen-z, with movies that transcend their target audience. Contemporary Gen-z films like "Bottoms" and "Theater Camp" reflect the generation's humor, style, and interests.
Gen-z humor, style, and language are notoriously difficult to replicate in cinema, leading to the ridicule of many movies about the generation across the internet. However, there are a decent number of films that capture the essential elements that make the generation one that's unlike the ones that came before. Much of this boils down to the impact of the internet in redefining the social rules and capital of young minds. This makes trends and ideologies change faster than ever, making movies feel dated more quickly. However, many promising Millennial directors with futures in cinema have taken on the challenge.

Ayo Edebiri's departure from Thunderbolts* is a loss for the stellar cast lineup. Ayo Edebiri's success in Disney hits like Inside Out 2 & The Bear highlights her acting talents. Edebiri's replacement, Geraldine Viswanathan, is a promising addition to Thunderbolts* cast, promising to bring a blend of comedy and drama to the upcoming movie.
While Marvel's Thunderbolts* has an all-star cast, it also has to deal with one actor's departure who shines in two recent Disney hits. The upcoming MCU film is one of the franchise's most exciting impending projects, partly due to the stellar Thunderbolts* movie cast, which includes many of Marvel's best actors and characters, such as Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes and Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova. Unfortunately, the cast has lost some incredible talent, including Beef's Steven Yeun. Yeun was set to play Sentry, but left due to scheduling conflicts and was later replaced with Lewis Pullman.

“Thelma” (Magnolia), an unlikely action-comedy starring June Squibb as a nonagenarian grandmother who becomes a phone scam victim, has grossed about $7.3 million through its third week. Though not a blockbuster by summer standards, in the specialized world, and particularly outside awards season, “Thelma” is a blockbuster, headed for between $9-10 million domestic, theatrically. And at a time of challenge for this sector. How it got there suggests some lessons for distributors.
Something clicked here. “Thelma” debuted last January at Sundance with immediate acquisition interest, selling to Magnolia, which isn’t normally known for mid-wide-level releases.
By all indications, the plan has worked. “Thelma” is already Magnolia’s highest-grossing narrative feature in the company’s 23-year history. Adjusted, “Woman Thou Art Loosed” and “The World’s Fastest Indian” ended up slightly bigger, but both were around 20 years ago.

Griffin Nafly (Everett Blunck) is not like other 14-year-olds. Consider his contribution to his school’s end-of-the-year talent show: a snippet of his latest play in which he reads for both lead roles, a disaffected stockbroker and his drunk wife, as they scream and carry on about everything from infidelity to abortions. While everyone else is happy with pop song duets, it’s Griffin — too old for his years, too young to really break free — who wants to bring some actual art to the suburban stage.
And while that might all be Ok, even kinda fun, the real problem isn’t just that Griffin isn’t like most other 14-year-olds, it’s that he’s not even really like his closest friends either. While his childhood pals, including “Are You There, God? It’s Me Margaret” breakout Abbie Ryder Fortson as his long-suffering second-in-command Kara, are moving into classic young adulthood — finding handsy boyfriends,...

Molly Gordon makes everything better. She was a stand-out among stand-outs in films like Good Boys, Booksmart, and Shiva Baby. Then she showed her talents on the other side of the camera, co-writing/directing the hilarious indie hit Theater Camp. Now she plays Claire on the beloved series The Bear, which is about to drop its third season. On this episode she talks about why she loves improv, how her parents unintentionally formed her comedy sensibilities, getting “buzzed” from in-person auditions, “locking in” with Jeremy Allen White, why she’s always aspiring to a child-like lack of self consciousness, and much more. […]

Exclusive: 20th Century Studios has acquired an original feature pitch from Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern (Booksmart), enlisting Gloria Sanchez to produce.
While plot specifics under wraps, the project is described as a mother-daughter comedy with two strong female roles.
On the film side, Haskins and Halpern most recently penned 80 for Brady, the comedy starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno and Sally Field, which Paramount released last year. They’re perhaps best known for scripting Booksmart, the BAFTA and WGA Award-nominated 2019 comedy directed by Olivia Wilde.
Creators of the CBS show Carol’s Second Act, starring Patricia Heaton, as well as the ABC sitcom Trophy Wife, the pair are currently under an overall deal in television at CBS Studios. Nominated for an Emmy for their work on staff of ABC’s Black-ish, they’ve also written on series like Good Girls (NBC), The Mayor (ABC) and Imaginary Mary (ABC), to name a few.

After acquiring Molly Gordon’s Sundance movie Theater Camp for $8M, Searchlight Pictures is back in business with the filmmaker again on the movie Small Parts. The movie is currently in development.
The pic is a new take on the 1987 Shelly Long and Bette Midler blockbuster comedy Outrageous Fortune. In the pic, co-written by Gordon and Allie Levitan, two actresses clash on a scrappy indie movie set accidentally find themselves entangled in a game of cat-and-mouse more outrageous than any movie.
Searchlight SVP of Production Taylor Friedman is overseeing Small Parts, reporting into Searchlight Production Heads Dan Tram Nguyen and Katie Goodson-Thomas.
Gordon co-directed, co-wrote, and starred in Theater Camp, which won the Sundance U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble and was one of 2023’s Top Ten Independent Films by the National Board of Review. Gordon and her co-writers were nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay.

For those who remember, the game show Press Your Luck relied a lot on good timing. In a very roulette-like manner, contestants would watch squares on a board randomly be highlighted until they prompt it to stop in order to get the prize it halted on. An amazing episode in 1984 would have a contestant endlessly receiving good luck as he won big money every time he called, “Stop!” His fortune would be called into question as he would get accused of cheating on the show. Deadline has now shared the first look at Press Your Luck — a movie that will depict the events of that episode and all the controversy surrounding it, starring Paul Walter Hauser as the fateful contestant.
The synopsis, according to Deadline, reads,
“Set in 1984, the film follows Ohio resident Michael Larson, who steps on to the set of game show Press Your Luck harboring a secret:...

Paul Walter Hauser has added another project to a packed upcoming slate.
The Emmy and Golden Globe winner, who in the last few weeks alone has been tapped to play Chris Farley in Josh Gad’s biopic and has joined the cast of both “Fantastic Four” and the “Naked Gun” reboot, is to lead “Press Your Luck,” a drama-thriller based on the true story of Michael Larson. Protagonist Pictures has unveiled the drama-thriller — from Plenty Good in co-production with Fabula — alongside a first look image and will handle international sales, while CAA Media Finance represents North American rights.
Set in 1984, “Press Your Luck” follows Larson, an unemployed truck driver from Ohio who stepped onto the game show “Press Your Luck” harbouring a secret: the key to endless amounts of money. But his winning streak gets threatened when the executives in the control room start to uncover his real motivations.

Ben Platt will play a concert residency at the newly remodeled Palace Theatre on Broadway.
The three-week residency, which runs from May 28 through June 15, will feature selections from Platt’s upcoming album, Honeymind, as well as his prior two albums, Reverie and Sing to Me. Michael Arden, director of Parade on Broadway, which starred Platt, directs the residency.
This is the first announced event at the Palace Theatre since the Nederlander-owned Broadway house closed in 2018 for remodeling. The theater has been raised 30 feet in the air, to make space for retail on the ground and lower floors, as well as refurbished with a new lobby, marquee and backstage area. The next Broadway show to play the theater has not yet been announced; however, additional events may be announced in the coming months.
“It is far beyond my wildest imagination to play a residency of my own music in a house as storied as the Palace.

ReFrame and IMDbPro have announced that 29 out of the 100 most popular films of 2023 have received the ReFrame “stamp” for gender-balanced productions. Some of these titles include “Barbie,” “Anyone But You,” “Flamin’ Hot,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Past Lives,” “Saltburn” and “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.”
The newly released report came with other key findings. 19 out of the top 100 films this past year were directed by women and one was directed by a non-binary person, an increase from 14 women directors in 2022. Of said films, nine were directed by women of color; only two were directed by women of color in 2022. Furthermore, 17 women were hired as visual effects supervisors, a significant increase from 8 in 2022. While seven films hired women cinematographers in 2022, there were only three in 2023, making director of photography the most male-occupied role.
