Elliot Page Denounces “Devastating” Rollback of LGBTQ2+ Rights at 2024 Juno Awards
Image
Elliot Page came to the Junos Awards on Sunday night to denounce a rollback of LGBTQ2+ rights after the Umbrella Academy star came out as transgender and nonbinary at the end of 2020.

“We are at a time in history where the rights of LGBTQ2+ people are being revoked, restricted and eliminated throughout the world, and the effects are devastating,” Page said when citing the work by the Tegan and Sara Foundation to support and build social change for trans and queer youth at the Junos in his hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

“If the world was not so hostile to LGBTQ2+ people, we would see ourselves purely as musicians,” Sara Quin, one half of the Canadian indie pop musicians Tegan and Sara, told the Juno audience. She called out the province of Alberta for recently proposing to restrict health care for transgender youth, including halting access to hormone therapy for children aged 15 and under.

In today’s Global Bulletin, Sky reports its latest Diamond diversity data, Abacus Media sells “Trickster” abroad, Channel 4 commissions a new home remodeling format and Pier 21 announces two executive appointments.

Diversity

Sky in the U.K. has released its latest Diamond diversity data, reporting progress towards diversity targets for original U.K. productions. Updated numbers show that 25% of Sky’s on-screen talent now comes from Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (Bame) backgrounds, surpassing the broadcaster’s initial 20% target. Sky has also reported improved minority representation in senior production roles, reaching 10% for the first time ever. Among writing positions, Bame representation in drama and comedy reached 17%, 9 points up from Sky’s full-year report shared earlier this summer.

It’s been nearly 60 years since the Rolling Stones stormed out of their sleepy London town to become “the world’s greatest rock & roll band,” and, in that time, they’ve put out more than two-dozen greatest-hits compilations. The best of the best-ofs (Forty Licks, Grrr!) provide a broad survey of all the big hits, high tide and green grass the band has staked their claim to over the years — but the more interesting sets shine their lights on smaller slivers of the Stones’ catalogue.

The Comedian – Review
Nearly 35 years ago DeNiro truly stunned film fans (yes, he could do that back then) when they learned of his next big screen collaboration with Martin Scorsese. It was crazy enough that the duo would follow the brutal one-two punch of Mean Streets and Taxi Driver with a glossy homage to big splashy MGM-style movie musicals, New York, New York, but this? They seemed to be back in their comfort zone with the classic Raging Bull, when they made another big detour. A look at comedy, namely a portrait of a failed stand-up comic (he’d be dubbed a “hack” today) named Rupert Pupkin. 1982’s The King Of Comedy even co-starred the iconic Jerry Lewis, who often claimed that royal title. The film was then considered a box office flop, but the years have been most kind to it (in stand-up parlance, maybe it was “too hip for the room”). Now,...

Xavier Dolan Leads Canadian Screen Awards Nominations
The “Canadian Oscars” feature innovative nominees in both film and television.

On Tuesday morning, actors Maxim Roy, Amanda Brugel, and Simu Liu announced the nominees for the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television’s 2017 Canadian Screen Awards. Song of the Week: Don Dilego - "Don't Bury Me Alive"
Sometimes you gotta wait for it. Sometimes it's not all that immediate. And sometimes you just luck into it and your pretty darn happy you did. So it was with the new album Magnificent Ram A (Velvet Elk/One Little Indian Records) by singer-songwriter Don Dilego. Now I've come to find out that he's right here in my own backyard in NYC and I'm not sure why this is the first time I'm hearing about him, but I'm mightly glad I finally did. There's an urban angst in the Americana fabric of these tunes and certainly the simple lyrics and stripped down accompanyment means nothing, if you don't have the chops to fill those spaces with the right colors and textures. Mr. D has a real knack for it, too. Waiting on the vinyl for my full review, but in the interim please purchase said song here: http://tinyurl.com...

No Lullaby Review [Hot Docs 2014]
Is there anything more terrible than the abuse of a child at the hands of an adult? As a matter of fact, there is: the abuse of a child at the hands of an adult that they trusted. It’s a sad statement on our times that news about the physical or sexual of a child is now almost routine. It’s getting to the point that with each successive case, we’re becoming less and less surprised about the depravity. Even when considering the worst of humanity, there is a more worse, and No Lullaby is a perfect example of the worst of the worst, a startling true story that’s too emotional to be faked, and too terrifying to believe.

Director Helen Simon introduces us to a middle-aged German woman named Tina. That’s not her birth name, but after Tina remembered the true events of her childhood,...

Tuesday night’s Pretty Little Liars finale left fans speechless. With two lives hanging in the balance after a brutal attack by “A” — and maybe someone else? — there are more questions than ever before. But the good news is that Ali is back in the game. So where do we go from here?

We caught up with Pll showrunner Marlene King to talk about that gunshot, our suspect list, and everything else we could think of about season 5:

Entertainment Weekly: We have to start with Ezra! What can you tell me about his fate?

Marlene King: Well in about...

Dennis O’Neil: Disney, Woody and Me
A week or two back, our own media goddess, Martha Thomases, observed that in real life Walt Disney was not the debonair and avuncular presence he wanted us to think he was. I’d heard rumblings over years, now and then, that Walt was guilty of anti-Semitism and racism and maybe sexism and that he was chummy with Nazis. I noted these rumors and then, no outrage, no anger – I pretty much forgot them.

But why didn’t I get upset? It might have been because I wasn’t a Disney fan. What he was selling was not high on my shopping list. In fact, I’m only a casual consumer of animation, which may seem odd, given how I’ve earned my living for the past half-century or so: all those comic books…

But at least the cartoons in comic books have the decency to stand still.

Understand, I don’t hate animation.

October Spotlight: Author Joseph D'Lacey Talks Meat, Garbage Man and More!
With his debut novel, Meat, Joseph D'Lacey burst onto the horror scene with a novel that prompted Stephen King to exclaim, "D'Lacey rocks!" We recently got to sit down with Joseph to talk about his career and the return of both Meat and Garbage Man via a brand new publisher.

The first pertinent question for any professional wordsmith is exactly what got them into pursing creative endeavours for a living. For D'Lacey, the love for writing had always been there, but took time to fully blossom.

He mused, "I think I've always had a writer's nature, I suppose, and the thing for me was that I didn't really pursue it until later in life. I was probably around thirty, really, before it got started. I'd always been a diarist, a journalist and written poetry and all those sort of things, but I didn't really turn my hand to fiction until probably when I was thirty,...

Bridget Jones: 5 Reasons Helen Fielding Was Right To Kill Off Mr. Darcy In New Book
First of all, I must say how much I loved and connected with the Bridget Jones character from the books. The movies were a bit camp, but fun, and easy to fall into. I must confess that I love both Colin Firth and Mr. Darcy. When I heard that Mr. D. was getting killed off in Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, I was shocked and saddened…but then, after contemplating it, realized that she might be right; I’ll have to read the book to be absolutely certain!

I live in Los Angeles; I’m aware that portions of the book have been excerpted in Britain, but I’ve not read any of them. However, I know, from the press releases, that Bridget is now 51, with 2 children, widowed, and back on the dating scene, armed with modern technology, and lusting after some hot, young thing.

Helen Fielding was...

Exclusive 1:1 Interview with The Family stars Dianna Agron and John D'Leo
In The Family, Dianna Agron and John D'Leo play Belle and Warren Blake, scions of an expatriate mafia family living in France under the protection of the U.S. government. Not unlike their parents (played by Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer), Belle and Warren have a difficult time adjusting to "normal" life in a foreign country - especially since they can't seem to help themselves when it comes to acting out. I sat down with Ms. Agron and Mr. D'Leo to talk about their awesome on-screen parents, their awkward first meeting on set and working with director Luc Besson.

'Agent Carter' Could Just Be The Beginning Reveals Marvel Studios Co-President
by Brett White

Man, Marvel Studios Co-President Louis D'Esposito sure is making the rounds. In a new interview with Collider, D'Esposito talks in-depth about his new short film appearing on the "Iron Man 3" Blu-ray, "Agent Carter." The short film features Hayley Atwell's return as Peggy Carter, the character she originated in "Captain America: The First Avenger."

"[Hayley Atwell] had seen [previous Marvel One-Shot short film] 'Item 47' and liked it very much," said D'Esposito. "She had read the script that we had developed, and she really loves the character, so she was on board. She also liked the fact that she got to show off some of her skill sets, that weren't shown in the previous film. And we got to see her fight. I think everybody has a little bit of an action hero in them and wants to show it off. So, with that combination, she said yes."

And now that Atwell's said...

Rated: Percy Jackson Sea of Monsters - A Cinematic Example of A Movie That Doesn't Do The Book Justice
In an era of The Hunger Games and Twilight, can this movie, released this week, learn the lessons that those book to movie genres give and redeem itself from its first film? Check out our thoughts in here!

My fascination with the Percy Jackson series started four years ago, when a younger Matt and his friends went to the Cinemark Theatres in Rockwall, TX to see The Watchmen. A preview for Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (which I still believe today to be the longest title in the history of cinema) came on. As I watched the previews, I couldn’t help but feel excited about this upcoming movie despite the fact that I had never even read a page of the books. Three hours later, I was in a Barnes and Noble buying all of the books and delving deep into the mythological tween world that is Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters – The Review
Seems like only yesterday we were saying goodbye to another film series based on a series of young adult novels when the vampires and werewolves from the “Twilight” saga bid adieu to the multiplexes. Well, before Katniss and crew arrive for another “Hunger Games” survival contest, and prior to a new series based on the “Divergent” books begins, we’re getting another movie adventure with Percy Jackson. You might ask, “Who?”. It’s been all of three years since movie audiences were introduced to him in Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief in 2010, so to the surprise of some (including Entertainment Weekly that wondered why this was getting a sequel) here comes Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters. Having a Ya literary degree doesn’t guarantee you second film, as the fans of “The Golden Compass” and “Cirque du Freak” books found out. So, will we get to visit young Mr.

Film Review: ‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters’ is Driven by Myth
Chicago – Although on the surface, the Percy Jackson stories may seem like Harry Potter rip-offs, the use of a mythology theme and a slyer sense of humor does give them some distinction and life. It also provides several moments of unintentional laughs in “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.”

Rating: 3.0/5.0

One disadvantage of the Percy Jackson series is that it always has to introduce itself. Their concept is so daunting, that it takes a bit of time to process. Percy Jackson is the half-human, half-god son of Poseidon. He goes to a “camp” populated by other demigods to learn divine skills. So far, so Potter. But it is the explanation of all the relationships in the camp that is somewhat batty, and they’re given exposition with bursts of mangled dialogue that must connect a relationship to some Greek god, and at the same time what power is derived from them.

The Romantics DVD Review
The Romantics finally gets its UK DVD release this week. The Gen Y dramedy chronicling the enmeshed lives of seven college friends was filmed in late 2009 and in the intervening years the supporting cast have gone on to become headline names themselves.

But back in 2009 Katie Holmes was the biggest star on the bill and it is she who top-lines. Capitalising on those Joey Potter powers of irresistibility, she stars as Laura, the one-that-got-away from groom-to-be Tom (Josh Duhamel). Thrown together during the rehearsal and build up to his high society wedding (to her former roommate and sometime friend Lila), their chemistry is as inextinguishable as it is predictable.

Lila (Anna Paquin) loves Tom with all her heart but she is pragmatic and understands how easily his head could be turned. Her friend’s adult lives have complications of their own – nicknamed The Romantics at college, when they were young...

Denette Wilford: CBC Brings Out the Big Guns This Winter
Gerry Dee in Mr. D (2012)
Can you believe it's almost winter? One of the telltale signs -- aside from the Christmas lights, holiday music and bitter, brutal cold -- is when networks begin to promote their midseason shows. That's what CBC did Tuesday at a special event on the set of "George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight." And so it begins...

Unlike the spectacle we saw at the public broadcaster's fall upfronts, the presentation for the midseason schedule was much more subdued, but that doesn't mean it was any less extravagant. The media milled around with the talent, and it was a little unnerving sitting behind Rick Mercer, new "Best Recipes Ever" host Christine Tizzard, beside the cast of "Mr. D," and across from David Sutcliffe (Rory's dad! Oh, and the star of the upcoming "Cracked") and Murdoch himself, Yannick Bisson. But that's CBC's charm, showcasing the best and brightest stars while making content key.

"I think it's...

Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Interview: “Chained” with Vincent D’Onofrio
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Vincent D’Onofrio has enjoyed a career playing characters who aren’t exactly warm and fuzzy. From his famous turn in Full Metal Jacket as the troubled Private Gomer Pyle, to Edgar in Men In Black, D’Onofrio has become a go-to man when it comes to psychotic characters. It certainly doesn’t hurt matters that he excels at the part. With Chained, D’Onofrio plays Bob, a sadistic killer who preys upon families with his taxi. It’s another fine performance from the man, and he brings a lot of his characteristic quirks to the part. We had a chance to discuss the role with Mr. D’Onofrio recently. When studying for Bob, did you research any serial killers? Just as [ Read More ]

Gerry Dee in Mr. D (2012)
The “Halloween” Remake That Almost Was
Gerry Dee in Mr. D (2012)
The Weinstein Company was trying to develop a new Halloween movie a few months back with Platinum Dunes, and Federico D’Alessandro was one filmmaker who worked on a pitch for the potential remake. Mr. D’Alessandro is primarily a storyboard artist, getting his start on James Cameron’s Aliens Of The Deep, and known more recently for his work as Head Storyboard Artist and Animatics Supervisor at Marvel studios, working on Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and The Avengers.

For his Halloween pitch, he created a technically impressive nine-minute animatic along with some keyframes, but the project ultimately dissolved. Mr. D’Alessandro told /Film:

“It turned out pretty cool, but unfortunately while I was in the middle of working on it, talks fell through between Platinum Dunes and the Weinsteins…so I missed the boat on that one. With Halloween being re-released to theaters soon, and October coming up,...

Survivor : États-Unis (2000)
'Survivor': Lisa Whelchel says 'Facts of Life' tribe could have beaten 'Diff'rent Strokes' tribe. Whatchu talkin' 'bout, Lisa?
Survivor : États-Unis (2000)
All 1980s TV addicts know that The Facts of Life started out as a spin-off from Diff’rent Strokes when Mrs. Garrett took her talents from the Drummond household to the Eastland school. But now that the woman who played Eastland’s Blair Warner, Lisa Whelchel, is competing on Survivor: Philippines (premiering Sept. 19), one can’t help but wonder: What if The Facts of Life girls had taken on the Drummond family in Survivor? Who would have won?

I posed that question to Lisa herself in the Caramoan Islands just prior to filming. “Well, this sounds kind of crass but...

Question: Do you have any more news on Castle? —Kaitlyn

Ausiello: In the category of “fun” episodes on tap for Season 5, series boss Andrew Marlowe is hoping to have the team investigate a murder at a sci-fi convention — “That should be fun, given Nathan [Fillion]’s background and how much of a rock star he is at Comic-Con” — and maybe do a riff on The Office. “We’re thinking about an episode that’s shot documentary-style,...

Dark Shadows – The Review
The history of cinema has had many long-running actor/director partnerships. What first springs to my mind is the long collaboration between actor John Wayne and director John Ford, which has inspired several film books and documentaries. More recently we’ve had the Martin Scorsese and Robert DeNiro team-ups ( although Leonardo DiCaprio may just catch up to Mr. D ). And now we have the eighth film that actor Johnny Depp has done with director Tim Burton since they first paired all the way back in 1990 for Edward Scissorhands ( Wow! ). After films based on children’s books, a low-budget filmmaker’s life, and a Broadway musical what have the duo decided to tackle now? Why, it’s a classic cult TV show from the late 1960′s : Dark Shadows. What’s their take on this supernatural soap opera?.

Time for a bit of disclosure here. During its original run on ABC television,...
