Netflix has capitalized on the video game fanbase, creating stunning anime-inspired films and shows sure to hook viewers. From the mysterious and mythological journey Lara Croft traverses in Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft to the gritty, frightening world portrayed in Castlevania, these video game adaptations prove to be some of the best among Netflix’s ever-increasing options.

Many of 2024's biggest anime had massive expectations placed on them, and these truly lived up to the anticipation.

Studio Pierrot, known for producing many popular anime series including Naruto, Bleach, Tokyo Ghoul, and Yu Yu Hakusho, announced a partnership that was signed in August 2024 with South Korea’s Red Dog Culture House to co-produce and invest in anime content aimed at the global market.

The partnership will see both studios collaborating on upcoming projects over the next three years through a production committee based in Japan.

As the partnership’s first project, the studios will produce an anime adaptation of Lim Kyung-bae and Kwon Soon-kyu’s Latna Saga: The Survival Sword King webtoon. Full-scale production is set to begin later this year.

The companies further revealed plans to consider adapting popular Japanese manga or original Korean webtoons into anime for future projects.

Red Dog Culture House’s CEO expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating, “This is an incredible opportunity for us to showcase our talents, and we’re thrilled about it.

You won’t see Sarah Connor, Kyle Reese or Arnold’s T-800 in this story — it introduces a new timeline and all new characters to go with it. Set in 1997, Japan, “Terminator Zero” focuses on a developer named Malcolm Lee, who is hard at work on another AI system to compete with Skynet and save the human race. Naturally, a Terminator unit is sent back in time to target him and his three children, while a soldier from the future is sent back with a mission of her own.

Per Instagram, Insidious director James Wan offered high praise for Renfield, calling it "a hoot of a film" while singling out Cage and Nicolas Hoult's performances as the Count and titular protagonist. He then looked back on his involvement in a failed Castlevania game adaptation, revealing, "Cage and I spoke many years ago about playing Dracula in my (defunct) Castlevania movie, so it's great to see he finally got a chance to play the Prince of Darkness."

A Girls' Love animated film has landed in the top spot at the Korean indie box office.

As translated by The Holy Mother of Yuri from Kyunghyang Shinmun, Geu Yeoreum, or The Summer in English, has become a box office hit after topping South Korea's independent art film box office. Based on a short story by best-selling author Choi Eunyoung called That Summer, the theatrical edition is an edited version of a mini-series net animation that premiered in 2021. The film has received positive acclaim for its emotional storytelling, beautiful and bright colors as well as a fresh and youthful style of animation, making it perfect for a summer watch. The film debuted on June 7 in theaters around South Korea.

Dragon Age: Absolution is a Netflix series released in November of 2022. It is set in the Dragon Age universe and serves as a bridge between the games Dragon Age: Dreadwolf and Dragon Age: Inquisition. The creators of Dragon Age: Absolution tie the series into the games with various easter eggs and references to the larger franchise.

Dragon Age: Origins was released in 2009. It features a customizable protagonist known as "the Grey Warden." The player is tasked with finding a suitable heir to the crown of Ferelden, stopping a power-hungry Tyr Loghain, and defeating an Archdemon, which is leading a large-scale assault against the nation of Ferelden. "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" is a triumph for fantasy movies. This is a film that embraces the absurdity, the playfulness, and the chaos of playing arguably the most popular tabletop fantasy RPG of all time, or at least the best-known one. It is a hilarious film that avoids snarky, meta and campy humor, but instead has humor that's fully about characters being earnest in funny and extraordinary situations.

The "Dungeons & Dragons" movies is also full of wonderful fantasy creatures, including plenty of great practical effects creatures that feel out of the "Dark Crystal" TV show. What's more, the movie even includes some of the more esoteric creatures we can only see in a "Dungeons & Dragons" movie, like the intellect devourers, the mimics, and the gelatinous cube.

Fantasy is all the rage on television. Sure, the genre has been popular before, and each decade has given us hugely influential and fantastic stories of magic and fantastical creatures, from "Xena: Warrior Princess" to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." But when "Game of Thrones" exploded onto the scene with a mature, gory, politically charged fantasy story, it kickstarted a fantasy TV race, forcing every studio and streaming service to run and make their own fantasy epic, no matter how much they had to pay for it.

Meanwhile, animation has always been at the forefront of fantasy television. There were Saturday morning cartoons like "Dungeons & Dragons" and "He-Man," shows like "Gargoyles" that focused more on worldbuilding and sequential storytelling, and also "Dragon Age: Absolution" and "The Dragon Prince," which deliver the kind of epic fantasy storytelling we commonly only see on the big screen.

And then there's "The Legend of Vox Machina.

"Dragon Age: Absolution" is an action-packed treat for fans of the award-winning video game franchise. The six-episode animated series expands the world of Thedas, including giving us our first look at a major location and some potential plot threads of the new game, and has a memorable cast of characters, all while delivering stunning animated action. Under the pact, Netflix and Red Dog Culture House will partner on a number of shows, bringing the studio’s expertise to future animated series on the streamer.

Based in South Korea, Red Dog Culture House is a rising 2D animation studio known for its bold direction and diverse animation style spanning from anime to Western cartoon styles.

Netflix and Red Dog Culture House recently teamed on the upcoming animated series Dragon Age: Absolution (see photo above), based on the popular Bioware video game franchise, which premieres this Friday, December 9, on Netflix. It’s safe to say that movies are set to dominate this month. There is the usual holiday fare like Scrooge: A Christmas Carol on Dec. 2 but overall Netflix looks to be trying to end the year strong with some big ticket titles. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio arrives on Dec. 9. That will be followed by Rian Johnson’s next Benoit Blanc detective story, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, on Dec. 2. The end of the month closes out with White Noise, Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of the classic Don DeLillo novel, on Dec.

Netflix's Dragon Age: Absolution debuted its first trailer, so fans of the series are sure to be excited for the animated television adaptation. After years of relative silence, Dragon Age is coming back with a vengeance, with Absolution fast approaching and the highly anticipated fourth entry into the series, Dreadwolf set to arrive in 2024.
