Lily James Stars Ss Bumble Founder In Hulu Biopic Swiped | Trailer Released
Image
Lily James is set to star in Swiped, an intriguing new biopic from Hulu, which will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and has just released its first trailer. Swiped is a biopic about American entrepreneur Whitney Wolfe Herd (James), founder and former CEO of Bumble, as well as co-founder of Tinder.

According to the trailer, Tinder executives also did not take inappropriate behavior on the app itself seriously.

Wolfe Herd launched the more female-driven dating app Bumble the same year. The streamer will bring a few notable films onto its service this August, including A24’s “The Legend of Ochi” and the horror sensation “Final Destination: Bloodlines.” It also boasts a minor selection of archive entries, bringing new horror, romance, comedy and drama onto the service.

Here are the seven best movies that are new to HBO Max in August

20th Century “Alien: Covenant”

“Alien: Covenant” isn’t the best of the “Alien” franchise. It’s barely in the top five. Still, Ridley Scott’s third feature in his outer space horror franchise expands upon the interesting themes and ideas established in his earlier entries.

Scott and company bring Michael Fassbender back into the fold, allowing one of the franchise’s best actors to give a dual performance as synthetics David and Walter. Through these characters (particularly David), “Covenant” continues to...

Chris Hemsworth's Submarine Thriller Casts Its Female Lead With Emmy-Nominated Star
Image
Chris Hemsworth's submarine thriller, Subversion, casts its female lead in the form of an Emmy-nominated star. Earlier this year, it was announced that Hemsworth would be starring in a submarine action thriller for Amazon MGM Studios, directed by Patrick Vollrath, whose debut feature was the plane hijack thriller 7500, with a script written by Andrew Ferguson, known only for the short film Love Thy Neighbor.

Forced into a deadly game of cat and mouse, he must outmaneuver naval blockades and navigate several threats lurking both inside the vessel and beyond its hull.

Chris Hemsworth's Die Hard Replacement Movie Casts a Disney Princess in Key Role

Chris Hemsworth finally has a co-star for Subversion. Amazon MGM Studios is behind the upcoming movie, which has been described as a "Die Hard on a submarine"-style thriller.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Lily James has joined the cast of Subversion. She will play a Coast Guard officer in hot pursuit of Hemsworth's blackmailed naval commander. James started her career on the small screen, appearing as cousin Rose in the final four seasons of Downton Abbey, before making the jump to the big screen in 2015 with her breakthrough role as Cinderella in Disney's live-action remake of its animated classic. She followed Cinderella with supporting roles, often as the love interest, in Baby Driver, Yesterday, and The Iron Claw. She also returned to television for the miniseries War & Peace, The Pursuit of Love, and Pam & Tommy, the latter of which she starred as Pamela Anderson, a role that earned her an Emmy nomination.

Finally Dawn Review — Lily James and Willem Dafoe Star in a Sprawling, Absorbing Drama
Image
Finally Dawn (Finalmente l’alba) is a soulful Italian period drama written and directed by Saverio Costanzo. While far from perfect, the film is genuinely immersive in its ability to transport viewers to another time and place. Set during the 1950s and 1960s—an era when Hollywood productions flocked to Rome.

This period saw major American stars, including Elizabeth Taylor, Gregory Peck, and Audrey Hepburn, headline films such as Ben-Hur (1959), Roman Holiday (1953), Cleopatra (1963), and Quo Vadis (1951). The result was a cinematic fusion of classic Roman backdrops and American glamour that remains iconic to this day.

Finally Dawn uses this rich setting as a backdrop to tell an absorbing story that unfolds like a sprawling novel, full of twists, turns, and layered subplots. While it can feel convoluted at times, the narrative ultimately finds its way and proves cinematically satisfying.

Saoirse Ronan may only be 31 years old, but she’s already a four-time Oscar nominee for her work in films like Atonement, Brooklyn, Lady Bird, and, of course, Little Women. However, last year she starred alongside a future Beatlesstar in a quickly forgotten WWII movie that’s still a streaming hit. Ronan features opposite Harris Dickinson (The Iron Claw) in Blitz, the period drama telling the stories of a group of Londoners during the German bombing of the British capital in WWII.Blitz is currently streaming on Apple TV+, and although it’s no longer charting in America, it is in countries such as Belarus, Cyprus, and Belize. Blitz earned scores of 81% from both critics and audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed only $1.4 million in theaters during an extremely limited release.

Blitz comes from the mind of Steve McQueen, who both wrote and directed the film.

Opus Climbs HBO Max Charts As Ayo Edebiri’s Psychological Drama Finds New Life On Streaming
Image
Ayo Edebiri’s Opus Gets A Second Wind, Lands In Top 3 On HBO Max ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Opus did not make much noise when it first hit theaters. The A24 psychological drama, released in March, followed a writer played by Ayo Edebiri as she visited a mysterious pop icon, portrayed by John Malkovich.

The film came with a modest $10 million price tag but only managed to earn around $2.1 million at the global box office. It was not exactly a strong start, not by any standards and things got tougher for A24 when they followed it up with Death of a Unicorn, which also landed without much impact.

Harris Dickinson’s Directing Debut ‘Urchin’ Acquired by 1-2 Special — It’s One of Cannes 2025’s Very Best Films
Image
Cannes 2025 festival-goers put their stamp of approval of Harris Dickinson the filmmaker, with his directing debut “Urchin” winning the Fipresci prize out of Un Certain Regard. What can’t the “Babygirl” and “Triangle of Sadness” and “Beach Rats” and “The Iron Claw” actor and future John Lennon star do?

A favorite of IndieWire’s Screen Talk podcast and Chief Film Critic David Ehrlich, “Urchin” seemed primed for a major scoop out of Cannes alongside other actor-turned-filmmakers.

Alas, it took two months since the festival’s end for rising distribution outfit 1-2 Special to step in and buy Dickinson’s film for North American distribution. Starring Frank Dillane as an unhoused, drug-chasing drifter in London, and in the vein of Mike Leigh’s “Naked” in terms of toxic emotional candor, “Urchin” follows Mike (Dillane) as he tumbles through a cycle of addiction, self-destruction, and London’s correctional system. In addition to the Fipresci prize,...

Wrestling Legend Kevin Von Erich Returns to the Texas Stage for Aew’s ‘All In’
Image
All Elite Wrestling (Aew) will bridge the past with the present on July 12 when the promotion, which boasts broadcast deals with TBS, TNT and HBO Max, will feature Kevin Von Erich on a Texas stage for its All In premium event.

The brothers, who hailed from the Dallas area, were local heroes (their father, Fritz, introduced the iron claw, in which he gripped an opponent’s head with his hand as an immobilizing move) and grew into a global phenomenon.

Jason Statham's $104 Million Beekeeper Predecessor Movie Is Quietly Dominating Streaming
Image
Three years before The Beekeeper, Jason Statham starred in the equally successful action hit Wrath of Man. Now, the movie is finding success on Hulu after being added to the streamer's library at the start of July.

Per FlixPatrol, a day after being added to Hulu, Wrath of Man has already landed on the streamer's Top 10 Movies list, currently sitting in the No. 9 spot. If the Statham-led action movie wants to climb higher on the chart, it will have to go through several popular features, such as the 1996 sci-fi blockbuster Independence Day, the 2013 crime comedy The Heat, the modern Disney classic Holes, and the Liam Neeson drama film Absolution. Wrath of Man's streaming success comes three years after the movie, a remake of the 2004 French film Cash Truck, conquered the box office, grossing $104 million worldwide against a $40 million budget.

I caught “F1 The Movie” over the weekend, and I’ve gotta say — this thing rips. 4 of a Kind: ‘The Beatles- A Four-Film Cinematic Event’ and What We Know About The Tetralogy So Far

A Quadruple Feature On February 20, 2024, Sony Pictures released the news that they were undertaking what may very well be revolutionary in the world of cinema in this, the Information Age. Sir Sam Mendes Cbe made his name in the theatre originally, with a signature darker aesthetic on beloved classic musicals with his 1993 revival of 'Cabaret', 1994 revival of 'Oliver!', and 2003 revival of 'Gypsy'. It was the former two productions that first intrigued Steven Spielberg with Mendes, and why Spielberg- whose company DreamWorks had bought Alan Ball’s script for 'American Beauty'- hired Sam Mendes to direct the film, winning Mendes the Best Directing Oscar for this, his film debut, springboarding a career of consistently brilliant films. It’s this kind of record that has apparently imbued Sony with the confidence to back this historic project. The Sony press release reads as follows: “As conceived by Mendes,...

Maria Bello, Holt McCallany, Jake Weary, and Melissa Benoist in The Waterfront (2025)
The Waterfront: We Chat with the cast of Netflix’s hot new series!
Maria Bello, Holt McCallany, Jake Weary, and Melissa Benoist in The Waterfront (2025)
If you’ve opened your Netflix account since last Friday, you’ll notice that a new title has zoomed to the top of the top 10 TV list. That show is The Waterfront, a family crime drama that comes from the mind of none other than Kevin Williamson. Of course, genre fans will know that name from his work with the Scream series, with him actually now in the midst of directing the seventh film, which reunites him with original star Neve Campbell. Yet, Williamson has arguably been even more successful as a showrunner, with a string of hits that include Dawson’s Creek, The Vampire Diaries, and more.

The Waterfront takes place in a fictional coastal town, Havenport, North Carolina, which is lorded over by generations of the Buckley family. When the patriarch, Harlan, played by The Iron Claw and Mindhunter’s Holt McCallany, falls ill, his children, Jake Weary’s...

Netflix's Latest 'Yellowstone' Copy Met with Rotten Tomatoes Rating Much Lower Than Taylor Sheridan's Saga
Image
Another day, another Yellowstone knockoff. Netflix’s new drama The Waterfront arrived this week looking like it had just walked off the set of Ozark, borrowed Yellowstone’s boots, and tried to convince us it had invented both. But while Taylor Sheridan’s Montana-set megahit earned its 83% Rotten Tomatoes score the old-fashioned way — by building a richly textured world over five bloody seasons — The Waterfront debuted with a much murkier 67%, and critics are already calling it out for what it is: Netflix by numbers.

Created by Scream and Dawson’s Creek scribe Kevin Williamson, The Waterfront follows the Buckley family, owners of a North Carolina fishery with a long history of shady side hustles. But despite the pedigree and a stacked cast led by Holt McCallany (The Iron Claw), Maria Bello (Beef), Melissa Benoist (Supergirl), Brady Hepner (The Black Phone), Jake Weary (Trigger Warning), Rafael L. Silva (9-1-1:...

Jeremy Allen White’s Worst Oscar Snub Can Favor His Bruce Springsteen Biopic to Break a Sad Streak
Image
Jeremy Allen White knows what it feels like to be left off the Oscar list—but that might actually work in his favor this time. After missing out on the coveted award for The Iron Claw, White is stepping into Bruce Springsteen’s shoes for his next big role. The buzz around his new biopic, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, is already loud enough to rattle the Academy.

Playing the iconic rocker behind Born to Run and No Surrender, Jeremy Allen White is starring alongside Paul Walter Hauser, Odessa Young, Gaby Hoffmann, Stephen Graham, David Krumholtz, and Marc Maron. But overall, it seems this movie could finally score its first Oscar nod, and maybe even end a sad streak that’s plagued music biopics for years.

Holt McCallany, Anna Torv, and Jonathan Groff in Mindhunter (2017)
There is hope, Mindhunter fans.

Holt McCallany, who starred in the Netflix series for two seasons alongside Jonathan Groff, recently told CBR about the long-awaited possibility of a revival and how he’s spoken to the show’s executive producer/director David Fincher about the series returning as possibly three films.

“I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it’s just a chance,” said the Waterfront star. “I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.”

He continued, “I recently wrote a script that he was kind enough to give me notes on. I was in script revisions with David for two and a half years.. but [he] was very meticulous, which is...

Mjf’s Heel Work at Aew Grand Slam: Mexico Was So Unreal Fan Went to His Hotel to Attack Him

Wrestling might be scripted, but sometimes the performances are so good, you start to forget that it’s all part of the show. That’s exactly what happened recently with Mjf. He’s a big name in Aew and has built quite the rep as one of the top heels in the game.

Lately, he faced off against none other than Mistico, one of the most iconic Luchadors around today. True to his heel persona, Mjf went all in and completely humiliated Mistico during the match. But that move didn’t come without consequences; it definitely came back to bite him later in a totally unexpected way.

'Mindhunter' Star Teases Possible Return of the Canceled Netflix Series as Trio of Movies
Image
One of the best (but still) canceled shows on Netflix is now looking for a way to return to the streamer. The show was unexpectedly let go after its second season, and while there have been rumors about the production of another season, a comeback is yet to be confirmed.

In Mindhunter, McCallany plays Bill Tench, the partnet of Jonathan Groff's Holden Ford, with both working in the Behavioral Science Unit at the FBI.

Image
2025 is an exciting summer for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Rumor: Marvel Studios Is Eyeing The Bear Star Jeremy Allen White For A Role In The MCU
Image
Projects like The Bear and The Iron Claw have helped put Jeremy Allen White on the map, so it was perhaps inevitable that he'd eventually be linked to a superhero movie.

The actor has shown he's not one to shy away from blockbuster fare when the right one comes along; after all, he'll play Rotta the Hutt in The Mandalorian and Grogu, coming to theaters next summer. Could the MCU now be next for White?

According to scooper Daniel Richtman, "Jeremy Allen White is being eyed for a Marvel role." That's all we have to go on for now, but we're sure it won't take you long to picture him in everything from Avengers: Doomsday to the X-Men reboot.

White would make a great Ghost Rider, and an even better Mister Sinister, but just being "eyed" for a role doesn't mean he's in talks, willing to enter them, or necessarily even interested.
