We know, you know that we're telling the truth when we say "Psych" was one of the greatest procedural shows ever made. The USA mystery series followed the case work of private investigators Shawn Spencer and Burton "Gus" Guster.
Each week, the two man-children -- often in half-reluctant collaboration with a dysfunctional Santa Barbara Police Department -- would use their particular set of skills to bring criminals to justice, in stories that delightfully dumbed-down the overly self-serious crime procedural subgenre to make it work as wacky, irreverent, and subversive comedy.
In anticipation of a potential fourth sequel film from Peacock, we've delved back into the case files to find our favorite mysteries. No deceiving, no bending -- here are the 15 best episodes of Psych, ranked.

When V/H/S/2 hit screens in 2013, it emerged as a bold sequel to the original V/H/S, offering another dose of found-footage horror anthology goodness. Like its predecessor, V/H/S/2 thrives on its unique structure: a collection of shorts tied together by an overarching narrative, each directed by some of the most inventive voices in modern horror. With its mix of supernatural scares, visceral gore, and relentless tension, the film aimed to up the ante from the first installment. But does every segment deliver? Let’s revisit V/H/S/2, dissect its stories, and determine which segments truly shine and which fall short.
Before we dive into the segments, let’s discuss a little backstory. The first film achieved success both critically and financially. So naturally there was demand for a sequel. Similar to it’s predecessor, V/H/S/2 is an anthology film. Multiple directors were brought on board to create standalone short films. The shorts...

As a big fan of both found-footage horror movies and anthology horror movies, I have always loved the V/H/S series of films. They’ve introduced genre fans to some fantastic new directors, while also featuring fantastic shorts from some of the best horror directors going. There’s been so many great segments and it seems like a great idea to make this seventh instalment a little more science fiction-influenced.
There are six segments this time around. The start is obviously part of the wraparound and introduces a documentary about UFOs and aliens.
The first segment in V/H/S Beyond proper is titled ‘Stork’ from director Jordan Downey and is based on artwork by Oleg Vdovenko.

How Is It The End Of The Year Already? Time, y’all. Life’s proverbial hourglass turns over again, and with it comes another fresh batch of horror titles ready to rock our worlds. But! Before we start digging into 2025’s crop, Daily Dead has once again generously given me a space to highlight my favorite horror “things” of the year.
I’m going to stick with movies because while every year is a good year for horror movies (which I had to remind doubters yet again), 2024 was a Really good year for horror movies. In trying to whittle down a Top 10, I stared at double the amount of titles I thought deserved recognition. Therefore, I’m sticking to the screen — I need every single slot.

The found footage horror movie subgenre saturated the film market after The Blair Witch Project was released in 1999. It might have taken a few years, but by the end of the 2000s, the monumental success of Paranormal Activity assured us that the subgenre wasn't going anywhere. Since then, we've gotten several found footage franchises, such as Rec, V/H/S, and Creep, as well as six more Paranormal Activity stories and a Blair Witch sequel. Although some argue the subgenre is stale and overused, there are still fresh releases that revive the style. And in 2022, we got the perfect example of this in Deadstream. The horror comedy manages to be interchangeably satirical and terrifying, filled with humor, jump scares, grotesque practical effects, and unpredictable twists.

The Legend of Boggy Creek. Cannibal Holocaust. Man Bites Dog. These are the usual suspects whenever someone brings up the origins of modern-day found footage. However, it was a long road full of cinematic experiments before these films would give rise to the movie that popularized the genre – The Blair Witch Project. After all, before Myrick and Sanchez’s film, most proto-found-footage productions were more interested in emulating documentaries and news footage than recreating amateur recordings that just happened to capture something creepy.
I say “most” because there is one notable exception. An infamous film so dedicated to its DIY presentation that many viewers were originally unaware that it was meant to be a film at all. Naturally, I’m referring to Dean Alioto’s iconic UFO Abduction (also known as The McPherson Tape), a misunderstood classic that I believe started all the familiar tropes of contemporary found footage over...

Has there been a more unlikely series of horror films than the V/H/S franchise? By the very nature of the sub-genre, anthology films don’t typically lend themselves to being series as even the segments within their own movies are almost always unrelated. Sure, TV has found a way to make it work in things like American Horror Story from Ryan Murphy or the criminally underrated Channel Zero that ran 4 seasons. Side note, if you have Shudder, please go check out Channel Zero. There are exceptions of course with The ABCs of Death or the Creepshow series but most of them are one and done. You also have nonrelated ones that use the same actors and directors like the wonderful things Amicus films was doing opposite Hammer in the 60s and 70s but again, these weren’t sequels at all. V/H/S has defied all odds and with a new film having just been released,...

The found footage horror anthology series V/H/S was launched in 2012, with the sequels V/H/S/2 and V/H/S: Viral following in 2013 and 2014. There was a spin-off called SiREN in 2016, then the franchise went dormant for a few years… before being revived by the Shudder streaming service, which has had great success delivering a new V/H/S movie every year. There was V/H/S/94 in 2021, V/H/S/99 in 2022, V/H/S/85 in 2023, and V/H/S/Beyond earlier this month. There will be no lack of V/H/S next year, as our friends at Bloody Disgusting has confirmed that Shudder officially announced during the New York Comic Con that V/H/S/8 is in the works and will be receiving a 2025 release. No further details have been revealed.

25 years ago, actor Michael C. Williams made a splash starring in The Blair Witch Project, one of the progenitors of the now-ubiquitous screenlife horror subgenre. Now, in 2024, he is back, and once again on the receiving end of terrifying events some mundane, and some far more sinister. In director Jill Gevargizian's latest film, Ghost Game, a group of bored and disenfranchised young adults seek thrills by participating in the hottest internet challenge breaking into people's homes, and living among the inhabitants, undetected, pulling small pranks as "ghosts." The latest victim of one group's antics is a family of three: disgraced author Pete, his second wife, and her neurodivergent daughter, Sam. Pete's family have just moved into a house that was once the site of a gruesome murder-suicide, and is now rumored to be haunted. At first, the game goes smoothly enough but as the disruptions escalate and the family's...

With a strong cult following behind them, the V/H/S movies are a must-see for fans of anthology horror, but they're far from perfect. They fill a highly specific subgenre, which isn't for everyone, but is ideal for those seeking something a little different from a standard slasher or haunted house horror film. The Bloody Disgusting-produced V/H/S was released in 2012, alongside a handful of horror anthologies. Since then the V/H/S franchise has gained notoriety with horror fan circles as being a go-to for unforgettable if at times inconsistent frights.
Horror anthologies like The ABCs of Death and All Hallow's Eve all came out within a two-to-three-year period of 2012, but the V/H/S movies at their best are arguably a step above in terms of quality. The first two V/H/S sequels from 2013 and 2014 retain the overall structure of the first, while introducing new elements of their own. V/H/S/94 hit Shudder in 2021, with V/H/S 99 arriving one year later.

At The Streamable, we love watching movies and TV for free, especially if we don’t have to sit through ads. Tubi is great, but seeing an ad for car insurance in the middle of your movie tends to kill the vibe. As we race to Halloween, we looked up all the best scary movies and found that a huge number were streaming ad-free on Kanopy, which is free if your library participates. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Hoopla is another free streamer that just added a major horror partner.
Your library probably partners with either Kanopy or Hoopla (or both!), giving you an unexpectedly great package of ad-free entertainment.

Ah, October. The magical time of year when even the most horror-averse moviegoers pop open their watchlist in search of some new scary thing to watch. And while "Terrifier 3" will certainly be the highest-grossing horror film of October, the early contender for October's best new scary movie is "V/H/S/Beyond," the latest entry in the "V/H/S" series. With the introduction of a cohesive central theme — and a handful of emerging horror directors giving each segment their all — "V/H/S/Beyond" has restored the franchise to its former glory and reminded us why horror anthologies can be such a fun way to tell a story.
But if "V/H/S/Beyond" represents a resurgence for the cinematic horror anthology, it's not the only one. This has been a banner year for horror anthologies across all mediums, with new collections and series dominating the shelves of your local comic and book stores. In fact, let's make a...

The found footage horror anthology V/H/S/Beyond is split into six segments, but not all of them are as entertainingly terrifying as the rest. V/H/S/Beyond is the seventh installment in the V/H/S franchise, and it makes a name for itself by focusing its horror on tales of extraterrestrial life and aliens. That means its segments can range in scope from intergalactic travel to a single, strange doggy daycare, and it also means the film can vary significantly from segment to segment.
V/H/S/Beyond has seven directors, though there are only six segments, as the segment "Fur Babies" was co-directed by Christian and Justin Long. Each of the filmmakers took a very different approach to their short films, and the result is a varied and surprising anthology. V/H/S/Beyond also had a massive cast, one that changed considerably between segments. Any movie that has as much variety in tone, subject, and style as V/H/S/Beyond does,...

Kate Siegel is a genius. There, we said it, and its a fact that we can all agree on. So, when it was revealed that shed be making her directorial debut in the latest installment in the V/H/S anthology film series, V/H/S/Beyond, we were excited to see what shed come up with and she did not disappoint. Titled Stowaway, Siegels entry, which was penned by her frequent collaborator and husband, Mike Flanagan, centered around a womans experience with extraterrestrial life forms after searching for them in the Mojave Desert. Each of the stories this time around was sci-fi horror leaning, as opposed to the more typical horror fare of the past. With free rein over what kind of story she could tell, the floodgates of possibility were open for the first-time director, which proved to be equal parts freeing and mind-scattering.

Once upon a time, thanks to the success of The Blair Witch Project in 1999, the found footage subgenre of horror felt fresh and was a nice change of pace after the Scream slasher era began to wane. Of course, if any film breaks new ground, expect Hollywood to dig deeper and deeper until there's nothing left. Every now and then, a great found footage horror film comes around like Paranormal Activity or the V/H/S franchise, but there have been countless imitators, with nothing more than the same beats of shaky cameras, screaming characters, jump scares, and everyone dying at the end. If you've seen one mediocre found footage movie, you've seen them all.

Now streaming on Shudder is V/H/S/Beyond, which pushes the popular anthology franchise firmly into sci-fi territory with new bloodcurdling tapes that explore everything from aliens to horrific science experiments run amok. Among them is Justin Martinez’s high-octane skydiving horror segment with an alien twist, “Live and Let Dive.”
Martinez, one of the founders of the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence, has been with the franchise since the start, having co-directed and handled VFX on the segment “10/31/98” on V/H/S. The filmmaker/VFX artist lent his VFX talents to the last three entries of the franchise and served as VFX supervisor on V/H/S/85 and V/H/S/99. For V/H/S/Beyond, Martinez conceived of his intense segment’s story with writer Ben Turner and makes his solo V/H/S directorial debut, putting his VFX and anthology experience to thrilling use.

During her third appearance on Collider Ladies Night, Kate Siegel laughed and said, It's so clich for an actor to be like, Oh, what I really want to do is direct, but I think what I really want to do is direct. With each and every interview Ive done with Siegel, for Ladies Night and beyond, its become more and more clear that not only does she have a firm handle on her craft as an actor, but she also has a deep understanding of and enthusiasm for the entire filmmaking process. Now that shes put that passion and skill set to use on her directing debut, the V/H/S/Beyond segment Stowaway, its undeniable. Siegel is meant to be a filmmaking multi-hyphenate.

One of the most unique franchises to emerge in the last fifteen years, V/H/S feels like an indefinite horror franchise. After enough of the filmmakers broke through in the mainstream, other emerging voices have been eager to add their names to the franchise. Like Punk Goes Pop or And1 Mixtape for horror, the series has become a scouting ground for the next great horror filmmakers. With the arrival of V/H/S/Beyond, we’re ranking the films of the franchise. Within each, we also do a mini-ranking of the shorts, so keep an eye out for your favorite shorts.
7. V/H/S: Viral (2014)

The horror anthology movie V/H/S/Beyond features a huge cast of characters, and the nature of its found-footage format makes it hard to identify all the actors. V/H/S/Beyond has seven directors and far more cast members, so finding out who plays which character can be quite a challenge. The fact that the movie is split into six segments also makes it harder to identify actors, as each segment only lasted about 20 minutes. Given the performances in V/H/S/Beyond, however, these names are ones to remember.
V/H/S/Beyond has found quite a bit of success, and it's partly thanks to the huge number of talented actors who contributed to the project. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 90%, V/H/S/Beyond is perfect to watch while waiting for the next big horror film. Some of the actors in the film could well become the next big names in horror, and it's worth getting to know them.

Shudder's biggest analog horror anthology series, V/H/S, is back and this time, it's going above and beyond into the world of sci-fi. In V/H/S Beyond, horror isn't simply regaled to the paranormal. Robots, unholy experiments and even monsters from beyond the stars have arrived to strike terror into the hearts of viewers. Case in point: "Stowaway," the anthology film's closing segment.
Directed by scream queen and final girl Kate Siegel in her directing debut, and starring video game developer and journalist Alanah Pearce, "Stowaway" follows Halle Halley, a woman in the '90s determined to discover the interstellar source of the mysterious lights in the Mojave Desert. She does this all even at the risk of her family, home life and better judgment. Armed with nothing but a camcorder, some interview questions and a loose script of factoids, Halle drives deep into the desert in the quest for the truth.

While still waiting for Mike Flanagans The Life of Chuck movie to hit theaters in summer 2025, the horror auteur has a new horror film available on streaming, V/H/S/Beyond, to watch in the meantime. Flanagan has directed and written some of the most popular and critically adored horror series and movies of the past decade, with hits like The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, Hush, and Geralds Game standing out among his work. Therefore, its no surprise that his adaptation of Stephen Kings The Life of Chuck story is among the most anticipated upcoming film releases.
Though the film premiered to warm reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024, currently holding an 85% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences have to wait until summer 2025 for The Life of Chucks theatrical release. Considering Flanagans last directorial release was in fall 2023 with Netflixs The Fall of the House of Usher show,...

Radio Silence, the directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, came onto the horror scene in 2012 when they directed one of the shorts in the anthology film V/H/S. They then went on to direct Devils Due and Southbound before making two Scream films and Abigail in the 2020s. Supernatural elements became a staple of their work, with only their two Scream films lacking some kind of paranormal component. Their films were widely beloved by horror fans, but it was their 2019 original flick that has yet to be topped in their extensive film catalog.

Plot: Six bloodcurdling tapes unleash horror in a sci-fi inspired hellscape, pushing the boundaries of fear and suspense.
Review: While the last few entries in the V/H/S series have covered specific years like 1999, 1994, and 1985. I’m glad to see the series leaving behind the year-specific branding, and therefore opening the story up to more possibilities. As great as some of those segments were, others felt very constrained by the time. In V/H/S/Beyond, the found VHS tapes claim to prove the existence of extraterrestrial life. But it’s not just aliens, as they take aim at robots and weird taxidermists as well. And it may be my favorite entry yet.
As someone who finds alien stories to be boring and very samey, I wasn’t entirely sold on the concept of Beyond initially. But thankfully there’s enough variety to keep things interesting. The wraparound story does a good job of...

The following contains spoilers for V/H/S Beyond, now streaming on Shudder.
Horror is experiencing a renaissance, with horror anthologies on Shudder transforming the media landscape. One of the best modern examples would be the V/H/S franchise, a series of anthologies all centered around horror from a first-person perspective, through the eponymous VHS format. These movies scratched an itch in the collective's obsession with nostalgia, combined with a lust for adventure, the unknown and the disturbing. Previous entries centered around a theme or time period, with the featured segments made by a roster of diverse directors having some vague connection. This time, V/H/S Beyond commits to science-fiction, filming the terrors from beyond the stars through a video camera. Aliens, robots, mutants, abominations of nature and big-budget special and practical effects grace the screens.

Now streaming on Shudder as the perfect early Halloween treat for found footage fans, V/H/S/Beyond is brimming with mind-bending tales of sci-fi terror from a team of talented filmmakers including Kate Siegel, who makes her directorial debut with "Stowaway." Written by Mike Flanagan and starring Alanah Pearce as an ambitious freelance reporter investigating mysterious lights in the desert sky, "Stowaway" takes a haunting look at the costly price of capturing proof of extraterrestrial life, as well as the gruesome side of space travel when one isn't prepared for it.
To celebrate the release of V/H/S/Beyond, Daily Dead recently had the pleasure of talking with Kate and Alanah about collaborating on the thought-provoking and eerily innovative "Stowaway," including the creative freedom of the found footage format, the sci-fi influences of films such as Contact and The Fly (as well as Stephen King's short story "The Jaunt"), the adventures of filming in the desert,...

Many a horror franchise has been temporarily goosed by an injection of sci-fi — even the slasher at the center of the “Friday the 13th” series went into orbit in the 2001 “Jason X” — but that element doesn’t do a lot to distinguish “V/H/S/Beyond.” This seventh entry in the ersatz found-footage omnibus series should be another reliable draw for genre platform Shudder, where it begins streaming Oct. 4. And the ongoing overall enterprise continues to have value as a launching pad for up-and-coming talents. But despite its new thematic wrinkle, the five segments here feel familiar in ideas and unmemorable in execution. It’s a middling addition to a variably inspired anthology brand that will no doubt trundle on through more installments yet.

Any horror franchise that sticks around for more than a handful of entries becomes an institution by default. And few long-running horror franchises have provided genre fans with such a rollercoaster as "V/H/S," perhaps because each movie in the series feels like an unpredictable theme park ride in its own sick, twisted, ambitious way.
The first "V/H/S" film, released in 2012, laid out the endlessly adaptable format: a horror anthology consisting of "found footage" shorts, each of them directed by a different filmmaker, with only a thin (if that) thread connecting them all. Really, each "V/H/S" segment is an excuse for a director to cut loose, to run wild, and to tell a brisk, violent, sometimes funny and sometimes disturbing tale of terror. The only real rule is that it has to be found footage, but even that is malleable. Stories in the series are told from camcorders, GoPros,...

If it’s October, it’s practically Halloween and if it’s Halloween, then it’s time for Shudder’s horror-themed found footage anthology, V/H/S, to make its yearly return to the streaming service. V/H/S Beyond, the fourth entry in as many years, its seventh entry across two decades, and ninth overall (including spin-offs), once again doesn’t disappoint, delivering enough splatter, gore, and grue to fill several entries, let alone a single standalone entry running under two hours. Across six entries, including the obligatory wraparound segment, V/H/S Beyond retains its emphasis on horror but leans more heavily into science fiction than previous entries, bringing extra-terrestrials to Earth for decidedly unfriendly contact in half the segments, technology gone awry in another, a Doctor Moreau-inspired taxidermist with an unhealthy canine fixation in...

Anthology films have become synonymous with the expression "mixed bag," as it's incredibly difficult to bring in multiple different directors with distinct voices to create short films and expect there to be an equal level of quality or tone. In my opinion, that's part of the fun. An anthology film gives me the chance to micro-dose an experience of a time gone by, where I'd agonize over VHS box cover art in the hopes that whatever I brought home would become my new favorite movie. If it didn't, that's okay, because I could just move on to the next one. The "V/H/S" films capture that experience, and every so often, a segment transcends its place within the anthology and becomes something singular. There are plenty of "V/H/S" segments that I adore and can watch on repeat without ever tiring, but there will always only be one "Safe Haven.

The V/H/S franchise started in 2012 and fizzled out after three entries, but Shudder’s relaunch in 2021 proved popular enough to make a new anthology horror flick a yearly October tradition. This year’s release, V/H/S/Beyond, is incredibly refreshing, taking the franchise in a very different direction to exciting and gripping results.

The concept of a haunted or cursed object goes deep into the human race's collective memory. Of all the streaming services out there, Shudder is arguably the best one to have during the trick-or-treating season. While plenty of other streaming platforms offer viewers something scary next month, Shudder is the only one with nothing but frightening movies of nearly every variety. With a leg up on its competition, the streaming service will undoubtedly be the one place viewers will find all their new favorite horror films.
From found footage films to movies about demonic possessions, Shudder has nearly every subgenre heading to the platform in the coming weeks. While some films might be a bit too creepy for the next movie night, there are plenty of others worth watching as the Halloween season quickly rolls in. Whether viewers prefer eerie monsters or the end of days, the streaming service has an abundance of options slated to arrive next month, which will surely scratch that spooky itch.
