It’s not uncommon for Oscar hosts to pay homage to the Academy’s long history, but some of that history is actually pretty unpleasant.

During this year’s never-ending ceremony, host Conan O’Brien happened to mention the first ever Best Actor Oscar winner, Emil Jannings, who took home the award for his work in The Way of All Flesh. This was way back in 1929, when the ceremony mercifully lasted for just 15 minutes.

While Conan only brought Jennings up in order to tee-up a joke about an Electric Boogaloo-esque Way of All Flesh sequel (we’ll let you fill in the pun yourselves), he neglected to mention that this particular Oscar win had a pretty unfortunate epilogue. Like really unfortunate.

Raunchy rom-com There's Something About Mary is climbing the streaming chart, currently sitting at number six on Hulu. Starring Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz, the comedy was directed by the Farrelly Brothers (Peter and Bobby), and became a massive smash hit when it premiered in July 1998. The film went on to earn nearly $370 million at the global box office against a $23 million production budget. It currently sits at a positive 84% critical and, surprisingly, only 61% audience on Rotten Tomatoes.

Following the success of Dumb and Dumber in 1994, and, to a lesser extent, Kingpin in 1996, the Farrelly Brothers went to work on There's Something About Mary, which starred Stiller as Ted, Diaz as Mary, and Matt Dillon as Healy. Years after a disastrous high school date with his crush Mary (you have to see it to believe it), Ted gets another chance years later when his best friend Dom (Chris Elliott) suggests he find her.

Jeff Daniels revealed in an interview with The Guardian that he saved 200 reviews that panned “Dumb & Dumber,” his 1994 buddy comedy with Jim Carrey about two dimwitted friends who drive cross-country to return a briefcase full of a money that was actually left as a ransom. “I have a theatre company in Michigan so I put on a preview,” Daniels said. “I was sat next to my parents and when we got to the toilet scene, my father hung his head in his hands and said: ‘No, Jeffrey …’ Meanwhile 5,000 people fell out of their chairs laughing. The reviews were horrible though. I still have a scrapbook of 200 newspapers panning the movie and wishing it never existed. Then we were the box office No. 1 for six straight weeks. Out of all of Jim Carrey’s iconic roles, the actor would might be most interested in reprising his titular “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” character.

When asked which of his past films he would want to return to, Carrey told ComicBook that the Grinch was among his favorite characters. However, his declaration of affection for Ron Howard’s 2000 film came with the caveat that the prosthetics required for the green, hairy Dr. Seuss villain were “excruciating” to endure.

“Oh, gosh, you know, if we could figure out the Grinch,” Carrey said about who he would like to play again. “The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process.”

After Dear Santa, though, they don't expect to be apart as long, and they may even revisit the beloved idiotic characters that started it all.

In mid-December of 1994, the Farrelly brothers blew the roofs off cinemas around the world with their gut-busting feature directorial debut, Dumb and Dumber. And so it’s fitting that Dear Santa, their first feature film team-up in a decade, arrives just three weeks before the 30th anniversary of their Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels-led buddy comedy.

“Dear Santa” has been 15 years in the making for Bobby and Peter Farrelly.

During that time, the brothers parted ways for solo careers, with Peter Farrelly famously winning Best Picture for “Green Book.” Now, a decade after last working together on “Dumb and Dumber To” in 2014, the Farrelly Brothers are back together for a subversive new holiday film starring Jack Black.

Black plays Satan, who is summoned by a kid (Robert Timothy Smith) who accidentally sends his letter to Santa Claus to the underworld. Keegan-Michael Key, Brianne Howey, Post Malone, Hayes MacArthur, Jaden Carson Baker, and Kai Cech co-star.

Unfortunately, in order to make room for the new content hitting the platform this month, it’s time to say goodbye to some of the old. From “Dumb and Dumber To” to the original “Spider-Man,” the family favorites category is taking some tough losses.

Jim Carrey's critically panned comedy sequel, Dumb and Dumber To, enters Netflix's Top 10 Chart in the United States 10 years later. Written and directed once again by the Farrelly brothers, the sequel to Dumb and Dumber sees Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprising their roles as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne 20 years after the events of the first film, as the two dimwitted adults set out on another cross-country road trip, this time to find Harry's adopted daughter. The cast also includes Rob Riggle in a dual role as twin brothers, Laurie Holden, Rachel Melvin, and Kathleen Turner.

Now, 10 years after its release, Carrey's critically panned comedy sequel has entered Netflix's Top 10 chart stateside.

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels starred in the hit 1994 comedy film Dumb and Dumber. Years later, Farrelly explains why a sequel to There’s Something About Mary never happened. Speaking with Comic Book, Farrelly said that the studio “did talk about a sequel” when There’s Something About Mary initially came out.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.

First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.

Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

Bill Hader returns for one final season of Barry and the popular sketch comedy A Black Lady Sketch Show kicks off its fourth season on HBO Max in April 2023. Additional highlights of the streaming service’s April lineup include the debut of Love & Death, a limited series starring Elizabeth Olsen and Patrick Fugit; season two of Somebody Somewhere with Bridget Everett; and the return of 100 Foot Wave for a second season.

In addition, the Titans mid-season premiere arrives on April 13. Prime Video has taken the global distribution rights to the latest film from Oscar-winning director Peter Farrelly. “Ricky Stanicky” will be the “Green Book” director’s first R-rated comedy since “Hall Pass” in early 2011; his brother and ’90s-era co-director Bobby Farrelly will not be involved. The picture will star Zac Efron, John Cena and Jermaine Fowler, and will begin production this month in Australia.

The picture concerns three friends who invent a fictional character to avoid unwanted situations but then must hire an actor to portray that fabricated friend when their respective significant others start to smell a rat. Producers include Paul Currie of Footloose Productions and Thorsten Schumacher of Rocket Science in association with John Jacobs of Smart Entertainment. The screenplay was penned by Farrelly, Brian Jarvis and Jim Freeman from an original spec script by Jeff Bushnell and Steve Oedekerk.
