Late this summer, Reed Morano took an all-encompassing approach to visual storytelling, taking on double duties as director first, cinematographer second. Olivia Wilde toplines Meadowland and the hard-hitting drama includes the likes of Luke Wilson, John Leguizamo, Elisabeth Moss, Giovanni Ribisi, Juno Temple, Kevin Corrigan, Scott Mescudi and Ty Simpkins. The ideal kind of auteur theory should be more inclusive. Add cinematographers. Case in point.

Gist: Written by Chris Rossi, this follows a couple, David and Sarah, dealing with their son’s disappearance. David finds solace in a traditional form of healing, only to lose his moral compass.

The beautiful, bleak landscape of the Tyrol; two orphaned children living alone on a remote farm; a gang of men whose brutal actions reshape all their lives. This is Autumn Blood, the stunnning début film from Markus Blunder starring Beautiful Kate’s Sophie Lowe and young Austrian TV star Maximilian Harnisch. It originated, Blunder says, with “a very brave woman that shared with me a story from her childhood,” and he was drawn to take up the challenge of directing because “My life was filled with darkness and bright light. I don't remember the last time I did an MPAA ratings bulletin and didn't have a single title in my movie database, but today brings us exactly that. In fact, the only film on the list I even have any remote familiarity with is Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort from director Valeri Milev and is expected to hit DVD and Blu-ray from Fox Home Entertainment on October 31. Elisabeth Moss and Nathasha Lyonne are joining the already cast Olivia Wilde as the principle female players and Luke Wilson is re-teaming with The Skeleton Twins (a brilliant Sundance dramedy - see trailer below) dp Reed Morano in the cinematographer’s directorial debut. Produced by Wilde, Matt Tauber (Autumn Blood), Bron Studios’ Aaron L. Gilbert (upcoming The Driftless Area), Margot Hand and executive produced by Jennifer Levine and Jason Cloth, Meadowland will commence shooting in New York City next month.

Gist: Written by Chris Rossi, this follows a couple, Sarah (Wilde) and David (Wilson) who deal with the unthinkable in the wake of their son’s disappearance. David, a New York City policeman, attempts a more traditional form of healing, only to lose his moral compass. Sarah goes down an unexpected path towards acceptance as she places herself in increasingly dangerous situations.

Exclusive: Arc Entertainment has acquired all North American rights to Markus Blunder’s thriller.

Autumn Blood was shot entirely on 65mm in the Austrian Alps and stars Sophie Lowe, Peter Stormare, Gustaf Skarsgard, Samuel Vauramo and newcomer Maximilian Harnisch.

The story centres on a pair of siblings at a secluded mountain farm who decide not to tell anyone when their mother dies, leaving them orphans. In the coming days they must deal with sinister visitors. Stephen T Barton and Blunder co-wrote the screenplay. Blunder also produced.

“We are excited to collaborate with 108 Media to release this jarring, incredibly cinematic film with its creative and unpredictable storytelling,” said Arc’s head of acquisitions Scott Moesta. “We are proud to distribute the film on all platforms.”

Moesta brokered the deal with 108 Media’s Jordan Nutson on behalf of the filmmakers.

Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave to open festival; director Peter Greenaway to receive Visionary Award.Scroll down for full line-up

Steve McQueen’s historic drama 12 Years a Slave is to open the Stockholm International Film Festival (Nov 6-17) and is nominated in the Stockholm Xxiv Competition.

Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, the drama about free black man kidnapped from his family and sold into slavery in the 1850s debuted at Telluride and has received positive reactions throughout its festival tour of Toronto, New York and London among others.

It will be released in Sweden on Dec 20 by Ab Svensk Filmindustri.

Screenwriter John Ridley, who will be present during the festival, is nominated for the Aluminum Horse in the category Best Script.

McQueen’s Hunger won Best Directorial Debut at Stockholm in 2008.

Hollywood Film Festival ran from Friday, October 18 to Sunday October 20 in Hollywood and has in its 17th year continued to aspire to screen and celebrate narrative and short films from around the world. This year's festival screened 50 feature films, documentaries and shorts all together representing 12 countries and also placed added emphasis on social impact documentaries supported by CineCause and Hollywood Gives Back. It.s all happening for Sophie Lowe. After scoring the lead role in the American ABC network series Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, the English-born, Aussie actress is set to star in Us-set road movie What Lola Wants.

Sophie plays the title character who runs away from home and fakes her disappearance as a kidnapping. In a desert diner she meets a guy played by Beau Knapp (Super 8) and they head for Mobile, Alabama, pursued by sinister forces. Her parents offer a reward of $1 million for her safe return.

Written and directed by Aussie Rupert Glasson, who.s based in Los Angeles, the film starts shooting in La and the city.s outskirts on June 27. The cast includes Robert Taylor, who stars in the Us TV crime series Longmire, and Dale Dickey.

It has yet to premiere at a major film festival, but Markus Blunder’s Autumn Blood starring up-and-comer actress Sophie Lowe (Two Mothers) and vet Peter Stormare (Fargo) will have drawn some early support from Mark Urman’s Paladin as Variety reports that the indie label picked up the alp set thriller over the weekend at the Efm. A theatrical release will occur later in the year.

Gist: High in the mountains, a widowed mother dies, leaving her two children alone and orphaned (Sophie Lowe & Maximilian Harnisch). Fearing being split up they keep their mother’s death a secret. They survive together until the mayor’s son and his friends brutally destroy their innocence when they assault and rape the girl. A social worker from a distant city arrives to investigate, but ultimately it is the siblings who must come of age to protect each other and survive.

There's lots of news today coming out of the European Film Market in Berlin, and rather than write several stories, we figured it would be a little easier to drop the whole thing on you in one neat package. Read on!

First up for you Nazi zombie fans, writer and director Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) is returning to his native Norway to direct the action-filled Dead Snow: War of the Dead.

“Set to be released in both English and Norwegian, the new film follows the sole survivor of a Nazi zombie attack who battles an even larger army of zombies with the help of the Zombie Squad, a professional gang of zombie killers from the Us.

Wirkola says of the new script for his sequel to the cult hit Dead Snow: “[It's] bigger, scarier, funnier, more action-filled and gorier than the previous one.”

Following our looks at actors, actresses, screenwriters and directors to watch in recent months, when the time came to put together a list of cinematographers (as we did two years ago), we went in with an open mind. But what was interesting is realizing, after the fact, that in an era where 35mm film is allegedly being phased out, that all five have done perhaps their most distinctive work on old-fashioned celluloid, rather than digital.

All have worked in digital of course, at least in the commercial world, and some have done hugely impressive work on new formats. But most of our five are fierce advocates for good 'ol 35mm, and it's another sign that the death knell shouldn't be rung for the old ways just yet.
