Amid the classic, flashy film and television premieres this week at SXSW, the festival also offered a forum for burgeoning creators to showcase their work in the Independent TV Pilot Program.
These seven wide-ranging pilots rely primarily on personal experiences — from mental illness to queer identity — while also taking creative risks to offer something new to the television landscape.
Screened throughout the week, the pilots debuted at the Rollins Theatre at The Long Center on March 9 to a receptive crowd, which included Woody Harrelson, who attended in support of former Champions co-star Kevin Iannucci’s project R&r.
Following the premiere screening, the creative teams from each project took the stage to discuss the unique challenges that independent filmmakers are facing in the current television environment and how those were overcome on their projects, including lack of financing and resources.

Project Runway's future was uncertain after season 20, but it was later confirmed as renewed for season 21. Season 21 may premiere later in 2024 or extend into 2025, following the large gap between seasons 19 and 20. Season 20's cast, including judges Nina Garcia, Brandon Maxwell, and Elaine Welteroth, could return for season 21 with new contestants.
Project Runway, which first premiered in 2004, has fans wondering if Bravo has pulled the plug on the popular reality TV competition after 20 years. The Emmy Award-winning show is the one that inspired countless others that came after it. The format was simple fashion designers competing against each other. Created by Eli Holzman, the show has launched some of the biggest names in the industry, such as Christian Siriano (he was the shows youngest winner), Chloe Dao, Leanne Marshall, and Irina Shabayeva. The latest winner in Project Runway season 20 was Bishme Cromartie, whod returned after installment 17.

As the show reached its climax, Bishme was named winner. The self-taught designer from season 17 earned $250,000, a mentorship with the Cfda (Council of Fashion Designers of America), a feature in Elle magazine, and six months of...

Updated at 5:40 p.m.: Chrissy Teigen had strong words for designer and former Project Runway contestant Michael Costello. Costello accused Teigen earlier this week of bullying him and trying to destroy his career. Teigen wrote on Instagram Friday that she was “surprised and disappointed” by Costello’s allegations and called the alleged texts between them that he posted online “fakes.”
She did admit to commenting publicly about Costello in 2014 when he was accused of making a racist remark. When Costello denied ever making the statement, Teigen says she deleted her post.
Teigen asked fans not to bully Costello for his posts, but warned the designer that the allegations needed to stop “Or this Will go further. Not here, but an actual court of law.”
Teigen had, last month, apologized for old tweets and DMs in which she bullied former reality star Courtney Stodden.

Chris March, a costume designer who rose to fame after appearing on season four of Bravo’s reality show Project Runway, died of a heart attack on Thursday at age 56.
TMZ broke the story, which was confirmed on Instagram by the Project Runway executive producer, Andy Cohen.
“This is how I’m going to remember Chris March,” wrote Cohen, “dressed as Lisa Vanderpump as I wear a Giggy costume he made for one of our first Halloween specials. Chris was a finalist on Season 4 of Project Runway. He designed for everyone from Beyoncé, Gaga, Madonna, Meryl, Prince and many legendary downtown drag queens (And Sonja Morgan!). It’s the end of an era. After a win and six nominations together, Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn will not be in the Best Reality Host Emmy lineup for “Project Runway” this year as they left the show before the 17th season. The series will look to return to the field with its current hosts Karlie Kloss and Christian Siriano, which would make “Project Runway” stand alone as the most nominated show in the category.
“Project Runway” is currently tied with “Dancing with the Stars” with nine nominations each. “Dancing” host Tom Bergeron was shortlisted for the first nine years of the category’s existence, winning in 2012, before getting dumped in 2017. Klum scored three consecutive solo bids from 2008-10 before being dropped in 2011 and ’12. After that, she and Gunn submitted together, won in 2013 and had been nominated every year since. Until now.

“It’s anybody’s game,” said Dmitry Sholokhov at the beginning of the “Project Runway All Stars” season finale. He had won the show twice before and was going for an unprecedented three-peat, but this season of “All Stars” featured nothing but past champions, so he was up against fellow Us winners Michelle Lesniak and Irina Shabayeva as well as Canadian “Runway” victor Evan Biddell. Who was named the “Runway” world champion at the end of the night?
The episode got off to an exciting start with the announcement of the final challenge. After weeks of unique, innovative and highly specific design tasks that ran the gamut from airplane materials to Willy Wonka inventions, the designers had no rules at all for their finale collections. Their mission was to take four days and a $3,000 budget to create six-look collections inspired by whatever theme they wanted. Essentially, their design objective could...

After narrowly escaping elimination last week, Project Runway All Stars‘ final four designers — Evan Biddell, Irina Shabayeva, Michelle Lesniak and Dmitry Sholokhov — faced off Wednesday for the newly minted titled of “World Champion.”
This time around, the designers were given more freedom than ever, challenged with creating a six-look collection in four days with a budget of $3,000. “The specific theme can be whatever you want,” host Alyssa Milano revealed, which seemed to please everyone. Let’s see how this all panned out…

In just 12 short hours, Lifetime will make reality TV history, crowning the first-ever Project Runway All Stars “World Champion” in a dramatic season finale event 15 years in the making.
But which of the four remaining designers — Dmitry Sholokhov, Evan Biddell, Irina Shabayeva or Michelle Lesniak — deserves to take home the brand-new title, and which one is most likely to? (Come on, we’ve all seen enough finales to know that the “right” person doesn’t always win.)

“Project Runway” premiered its 17th season on Bravo Thursday night with a new host, a new mentor, new judges and a new crop of designers competing for fashion supremacy. But that’s not the only thing that’s new about the series. After 15 years the show has introduced its first transgender model.
The season premiere episode, “First Impressions,” made a strong first impression when MiMi introduced herself to her designer for the first challenge, Kovid Kapoor. “I want to change the industry,” she told Kapoor. “I want to inspire all the transgender young generation who have a dream.” Kapoor’s overjoyed reaction to her opening up to him was one of the premiere’s most moving moments. “You’re a real goddess!” he told her. Watch that touching exchange below.

Christina Exie was surprised that she was eliminated from “Project Runway All Stars” in the “Climate Quick Change” challenge, and so were a lot of our users. Our predictions pointed to Dmitry Sholokhov as the designer most likely to be sent home, but he actually ended up with one of the top three scores even though his look sharply divided the judging panel. When we asked our readers what they thought of the judges’ decision, though, the vast majority thought the wrong designer was sent home.
The “Climate” challenge was to design a look that could transition from one weather condition to another. Exie had to create a look for the beach that would go from sun to high winds, so she went with a black bathing suit worn under a caftan that could be tied around the waist. The look wasn’t too inventive, and the cinching required too...

Well I didn’t see that coming. This season of “Project Runway All Stars” has been a dizzying merry-go-round of fashion fabulousness and faux pas, with designers going from high scores to low scores and back again, but I didn’t expect the judges to oust a contestant the week after she won her second design challenge. That’s what happened to Christina Exie in episode 10, “Climate Quick Change.” Were you as surprised as I was? And did you agree with that result? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
To be fair, I can see where the judges were coming from. The challenge was to design a resort look that would transition quickly from one climate to another. Exie was tasked with a beach look that would go from sunny to windy, but all she offered the judges was a two-piece bathing suit...

After Dmitry Sholokhov won the first design challenge on “Project Runway All Stars” season seven he quickly became our front-runner to win the whole competition, and for good reason. Sholokhov has never lost. He previously won season 10 of the main “Runway” series and then season 4 of “All Stars.” Even low scores are almost unheard of for the dominant designer. But is he at risk of being eliminated from “Runway” for the first time ever? Our users think so.
Based on the combined predictions of our users as of this writing, Sholokhov is the likeliest to be eliminated from episode 10 tonight with leading odds of 27/10. But how could that be if he has historically been so rock-solid? Well, he’s coming off what was arguably his worst week in “Runway” history. In “All-Inclusive,” his gender-neutral trench coat in metallic silver looked to the judges like a Martian costume, and he landed in the bottom two,...

The ninth challenge this season on “Project Runway All Stars” was “All-Inclusive,” in which the designers created gender-neutral looks that could be worn by anyone on the spectrum: male, female and non-binary. This was an unusual challenge for a show that predominantly focuses on fashion for cisgender women, but maybe it shouldn’t be. I think TV’s premier fashion competition should follow the lead of fashion trendsetters like Billy Porter, who wasn’t nominated for anything at the Oscars but nevertheless won the event with his show-stopping tuxedo gown on the red carpet. And it was designed by “Project Runway” alum Christian Siriano.
Siriano won season four of “Runway” and is arguably the show’s most famous champ. For Porter’s Oscars look he served up traditional masculinity up top and then billowed out from there into a bold dress. “I was ready to create the conversation,” Porter told...

The remaining six designers were thrown for a bit of a loop on Wednesday’s episode of Project Runway All Stars, which required them to think a little differently about gender and fashion.
“Social awareness about gender has finally become an open conversation,” host Alyssa Milano told the contestants, each of whom would have to “design gender-neutral high-fashion street wear” for a model who either identifies as male, female or non-binary. Though the designers were given their models’ measurements, they wouldn’t actually get to meet them until it was time for the first runway fitting.

You know the right designer was sent home when their only defense is: “I really don’t think that my outfit today was that bad.” (Oh, but it was. It really was.)
Wednesday’s episode of Project Runway All Stars sent the season’s remaining eight designers to Jc Penney to “shop for three different daytime separates and transform them into one sensational nighttime look.” Unfortunately, two of those elements — specifically “sensational” and “nighttime” — were missing from Cynthia Hayashi‘s final presentation.
“The vest is a little frumpy,” guest judge Vanessa Williams said in her critiques. “It’s a little matronly.

Eight designers remained going into episode eight of “Project Runway All Stars.” After dealing with unconventional materials, corsets, zoo animals and more, the designers had to make fashionable evening looks out of — gasp! — daytime separates. Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
Every single “All Stars” contestant this season is a past “Runway” champion. The playing field is so level that six out of the eight remaining designers won a design challenge in the first seven episodes. The only contestant who won twice up to this point was Anthony Ryan Auld, who had the best graduation look in “Top of the Class” and then prevailed again last week in “Pure Imagination.” Dmitry Sholokhov, Irina Shabayeva, Christina Exie, Michelle Lesniak and Sean Kelly also won challenges.

Last week on “Project Runway All Stars” Anthony Ryan Auld became the first contestant of the season to win two design challenges. He has sure come a long way since almost being eliminated in the season premiere. As a result of that windfall he has moved up in our predictions for who will win the season, while former front-runner Dmitry Sholokhov dips. But even with his sudden ascent, Auld isn’t our front-runner to win the competition. That’s still Irina Shabayeva.
Shabayeva has been hit-and-miss this season, but when she’s on she’s on fire. She won the “Buckle Up!” unconventional materials challenge, and she was the runner-up in three other challengers. Django Steenbakker was eliminated from “Project Runway All Stars” last week after landing in the judges’ bottom three for several challenges. But now that he’s gone, who’s next? Of the eight remaining competitors there are only two left who have yet to win a design challenge. One of them has never gotten a low score (Evan Biddell), while the other has never gotten a high score (Cynthia Hayashi). Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s the low-scorer we’re expecting to exit the competition tonight.
Hayashi hasn’t really had a disastrous run this season on “All Stars.” Out of the first seven challenges, she only got low scores twice: in the season premiere episode, and then in “Of Corsets Fashion.” But every other week she has simply been declared safe, and seven challenges is a long way to go without being singled out for judges’ praise even once. In the first six weeks of competition on “Project Runway All Stars” there had been six different design challenge winners — no repeats. That finally changed in the lucky seventh week. “What we’ll see will defy explanation.” Those lyrics from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” couldn’t have been more fitting on “Project Runway All Stars.” In episode seven, “Pure Imagination,” the designers embarked on this season’s avant garde challenge. The avant garde challenge has always been an opportunity for designers to let their freak flags fly, but they had better fly high, especially this season. In the first six weeks of the competition the judges saw some wild, unflattering designs, but they have often been harder on contestants who created bland, uninspired looks (like Juli Grbac) than those who took big swings and missed (like three-time low-scorer Django Steenbakker). And when it comes to avant garde fashion, there’s nothing worse than boring.

Anya Ayoung-Chee warned us in the season premiere of ‘Project Runway All Stars” that sewing wasn’t her strong suit. She was almost eliminated from the show on that very first challenge. But then she seemed to get along just fine, earning safe scores from the judges every week thereafter … until now. In episode six, “Pedal to the Metal,” the rubber finally met the road and she couldn’t drape her way out of it, even with ample assistance from her fellow designers. Did she really deserve to go? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
Ayoung-Chee’s strength was in flowing looks, so she knew she was in trouble as soon as the challenge was announced: to create a red carpet look with metallic fabric. The problem was that a metallic fabric wouldn’t work with her usual aesthetic, so it exposed her biggest weakness as a designer.

In what has been an especially turbulent season of “Project Runway All Stars,” Sean Kelly is the latest to go from worst to first. He was a surprise addition to the show at the end of the season premiere episode, and it’s been a tumultuous run for him. “Project Runway” has always been an international affair, with contestants originating from all over the world. But this seventh and final Lifetime season of “Project Runway All Stars” is an especially global affair. Half of the contestants are past winners from the show’s foreign spin-offs. But those foreign contenders have been dropping like flies. Can the remaining contestants rebound, or will they quickly be deported?
There have been four eliminations over the first five weeks of the competition, and three of them have been international designers: Sunny Fong (Canada) in “Top of the Class,” Jasper Garvida (UK) in “Of Corsets Fashion” and Juli Grbac (Australia) in “On the Prowl.” The one American sent home thus far was actually a big surprise: Seth Aaron Henderson, who had won not one but two past seasons of “Runway.”
