Updated: New this weekend at the international box office, Warner Bros began pre-domestic release on Amazon MGM Studios’ Red One. The opening numbers on the Christmas-themed Seven Bucks production are within the range we expected heading into the frame, coming in at $26.6M from 75 offshore markets.
For Latin America, the film ranked No. 2 behind the 3rd weekend of Venom: The Last Dance, but results are above comps like Central Intelligence (+35%).
In Europe, and at today’s rates, Red One is tracking ahead of Central Intelligence (+9%) and Skyscraper (+15%).
Asia was not expected to excel; however in the region (excluding China and Japan), reviews were mostly positive, and the film ranked as the No. 1 or No. 2 U.S. title in all but two markets.
Overall, the Dwayne Johnson/Chris Evans-starrer saw strong Saturday performance across nearly all markets with family audiences propelling results; this bodes well for the weeks to come...

Refresh for latest…: After its sadly disappointing start last weekend, Warner Bros and Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux is still a sad clown, adding an estimated $22.7M from 77 international box office markets this session (a 70.5% drop). The overseas running cume now stands at $113.7M and the worldwide total is currently $165.3M through Sunday. The outlook offshore is about a $150M final.
New this session was Japan where Joker 2 was the top U.S. title with $2.4M. The Top 5 overseas to date are the UK ($11.8M), Germany ($7.9M), Italy ($7.6M), Mexico ($7.4M) and France ($7.1M). China still has to release, but we’re not expecting firecrackers. The Imax total to date is $13.5M global, of which international is $7.3M.
Onward.
The wild run of Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot continues as its staggered rollout added 19 markets including France, Spain, Italy and Brazil this session. The offshore...

Updated: Paramount/Hasbro Entertainment’s Transformers One is out of the gate with a $39M global start. From just 50 international box office markets (representing only 40% of the overseas footprint), the first animated Transformers movie in close to 40 years grossed $14M.
The Josh Cooley-directed origins story came in below projections domestically and international is off to a softer start than hoped.
While there are still major markets to come including Brazil, Italy, Korea, China, Germany, UK and France, it’s still a bit of a head-scratcher that the offshore opening wasn’t bigger given reviews, word of mouth and how much perceived anticipation there has been for the movie. A work-in-progress screening at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival had the room on its feet in June. However, we are hearing about general softness in the marketplace — and the back-to-school period can be a tricky one. The hope here is...

While a fairly quiet frame overall, there were some significant milestones this international box office session. To wit: New Line/Warner Bros’ The Nun II topped the $200M mark worldwide and Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan became the highest-grossing Bollywood movie ever in India, overtaking the star’s earlier 2023 movie, Pathaan.
The Nun II scared up another $20.8M in 74 offshore markets during the third frame, elevating the overseas cume to $135M and global to $204.2M. The offshore drop was a great 44% with strong holds in Holland (-14%), Italy (-30%), France (-37%), UK (-38%), Spain (-39%), Australia (-40%), Poland (-42%) and Mexico (-42%).
Germany released this session to a terrific $3.2M on 464 screens and ranked a clear No. 1 with a nearly 50% share of the Top 5 Films. This was good for the highest opening weekend of the Conjuring Universe as well as ahead of all other comps.

Refresh for latest…: Warner Bros/New Line’s The Nun II continued to conjure strong business around the globe this weekend, taking the top spot again worldwide and overseas. The sophomore session of $30.1M in 72 offshore markets brings the international box office cume to $102.3M and worldwide to $158.8M so far.
More on The Nun II in a bit, but first let’s check in on Hercule Poirot and 20th Century Studios/Disney’s A Haunting in Venice which debuted to $37.2M globally, including $22.7M from 51 overseas markets. This is essentially where the $60M-budgeted film was expected to land internationally, where it performed best in the European majors. There were No. 1s in the UK, Spain and Italy, and No. 2s in France, Germany and Brazil among the key markets.
Scores are about on par with the last Kenneth Branagh-directed Agatha Christie yarn. IMAX generated $900K offshore.

Update: Busy weekend at the international box office with a strong scary new entry, some unexpected spark in holds and a milestone for a long-running franchise.
Out of the gate this frame, Sony/Screen Gems/Stage 6 Films/Blumhouse’s Insidious: The Red Door knocked out the biggest overseas horror debut since 2019. With $31.4M from 52 markets; this is also the best for the franchise in like-for-like markets. Including domestic, the global bow is $64M.
Offshore, the Patrick Wilson-directed and starring fifth in the series, which is a direct continuation of the first two movies, is tracking 27% ahead of Insidious: The Last Key at current exchange rates, and bigger than recent horror franchise releases Evil Dead Rise (+58%) and Scream VI (+30%).
Horror-leaning Mexico led play with a No. 1 $5.8M, marking Sony’s biggest ever horror opening in the territory. The scarer also scored a record in the Philippines as the highest horror...

The James Gunn-directed threequel handily crossed the half a billion mark in the sophomore frame and now sits at an estimated $528.8M global through Sunday. Of that, $213.2M is from domestic and $315.6M at the international box office.

For Star Lord & company, strong offshore midweeks led to a second-weekend of $92M in 52 markets, a drop of 40% from opening; this is better than Gotg the first, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, GOTG2 and Doctor Strange in...
