Hulu subscribers have only a few days left to watch the first season of an acclaimed superhero action anime series before it leaves the platform next month.
The superhero sci-fi series Tiger & Bunny, which follows veteran hero Kotetsu T. Kaburagi (Wild Tiger) and his rookie partner Barnaby Brooks Jr. (Bunny) as they fight crime in a corporate-sponsored hero league, will soon disappear from Hulu's anime collection. Set in a world where heroes compete on reality TV for points while sporting corporate logos on their official costumes, Tiger & Bunny has been an anime fan-favorite since its 2011 debut. Kaiju No. 8 was a long-anticipated anime back in the Spring 2024 season. Kafka Hibino’s underdog story of following his dreams is inspiring, humorous, and frightening. Terrible monsters called Kaiju plague Japan, and Kafka hates them all until he becomes one. Season 1 was a wild ride as Kafka joined the Jakdf as a half-other Kaiju monster hiding in plain sight, ending with a bang as Kafka faced Isao Shinomiya in mortal combat to prove his worth.
Until the next season of Kaiju No. 8 arrives, anime audiences are looking for something to slake their thirst for similar tales. Stories about plucky underdogs and giant monsters aren’t hard to come by in anime, but there are certainly some stories that more accurately align with Kaiju No. 8’s specific brand of shonen. Whether fans are eager for the Kaiju fights or the mixture of genres, there are plenty of Kaiju No. 8...

Superheroes dominate North American comics. There are popular comic series that aren't about superheroes — for example, AMC's hugely popular Walking Dead show is an adaptation of the comic series that ran from 2003 to 2019 and Conan the Barbarian has been a consistent presence in comics for the past 50 years — but they tend to be a bit of a niche compared to hugely popular superhero series like Superman, Batman and Spider-Man.
In general, the opposite is true in Japan. The three most popular manga series: One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach are about pirates, ninjas, and supernatural samurai, respectively. There are several superhero manga and anime series that have become popular, such as One-Punch Man, Shy, and Tiger & Bunny. On the whole, superheroes in the style of Marvel and DC comics aren't a common premise for manga and anime, though they're not completely unknown, either.

My Hero Academia's manga has just ended this month, causing bittersweet feelings within the fandom, and its seventh season is also wrapping up this month, leaving just one more season until the series is (supposedly) done for good. Before that, though, the fan-favorite superhero anime will get another movie, My Hero Academia: You're Next, this October. Needless to say, it's a pretty big time for the series, and with so much going on, it's worth looking at how My Hero Academia is changing the superhero game. After all, we're in the heyday of superheroes, with Marvel films and series coming out multiple times a year, shows like The Boys taking a swing at the status quo of the hero, and anime like Tiger & Bunny being revived after over a decade with new seasons. You have to keep things fresh.

Netflix is getting into the "Pokémon" business in a pretty interesting way. The streaming service has debuted the first trailer for a brand new series entitled "Pokémon Concierge" which marks not only the first collaboration between Netflix and The Pokémon Company, but it's also the first stop-motion animated series in the history of the franchise. See what that looks like for yourself in the trailer above.
The trailer is, in a word, adorable. There is absolutely a version of the Pokémon universe that is a little gritty and horrifying. After all, many of these are very dangerous animals. This is the polar opposite of that version, with all of the many familiar creatures just trying to relax and looking rather cuddly. Surprisingly, we've never seen the series take the stop-motion approach before having now seen it, as it looks very natural. The brief logline for the series reads as follows:...

While many view the popularity of superhero narratives as a recent phenomenon, the first boom of heroic fiction dates back to the 40s and 50s. The tragedies of the 20th century made people across the globe seek reassurance in the superhero genre. In the West, the household names for all things superheroes are Marvel and DC, while, in Japan, this niche was taken by tokusatsu shows like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider. The contemporary revival of the superhero genre and its unprecedented explosion of popularity is rightfully credited to the MCU’s success.
Yet, high-budget blockbusters and Western comic books aren’t the only medium that rediscovered their interest in superpowered heroes. Anime and manga also participated in the superhero rage, producing countless stellar exemplars of the genre. Anime and live-action adaptations often struggle to capture the energy and vibrance of the original format, as seen in failed adaptations like Dragon Ball Evolution and Netflix's Death Note movie. Many iconic anime works, such as Akira and Neon Genesis Evangelion, have had potential live-action adaptations that never came to fruition due to logistical reasons like lack of funding or studio withdrawal. While there have been exceptions like Netflix's One Piece live-action series, most anime live-action adaptations face significant challenges in successfully translating the source material to the big screen.
Anime and live-action adaptations usually don’t go well together, as is evident from some terrible adaptations that ruin their source material. Westernized disasters like Dragon Ball Evolution and Netflix’s Death Note movie along with even Japanese productions like movies on Devilman and Terra Formars bear testimony to this fact. Of course, there can be a few exceptions occasionally,...

My Hero Academia has grown to become one of the most popular animes in the world. When it first aired in 2016, it was impossible to predict the popularity the series would receive — after all, many series don’t strike it so lucky right off the bat. Now, though, it's in its seventh season, with three (soon to be four) films and a handful of video games under its belt, and there are no signs of the series slowing down. It’s as popular as ever, but as with all popular things, it gets constantly analyzed and compared to the series that came before it. In this case, the predecessor in question is 2011’s Tiger & Bunny. While My Hero Academia definitely has its strong points, such as having a broad cast of interesting characters, an intriguing overarching villain, and some visually stunning fight scenes, a lot of these things are found,...

Sometimes, even the best of anime can't escape the cringe trope of whitewashing the entire cast. Fortunately, the anime community has enjoyed its fair share of diversified characters, especially Black characters.
Stereotyping is a long-standing issue that is diminishing as time passes, but luckily, fans have been blessed with some amazing Black characters over the years. These Black characters are not only show-stealers, but they might be the only thing keeping some of these shows together.

Superhero fiction is more popular than ever these days, and that extends to anime. There have been several successful superhero anime series in the past decade or so, including the likes of My Hero Academia, One-Punch Man and even Tiger & Bunny. There was another such title in this number from the mid 2010s, but it wasn't nearly as successful -- namely due to its narrative.
Studio Bones' Concrete Revolutio was a fairly experimental superhero anime from 2015, based on a manga that began publication in the same year. Colorful, bright and incredibly unique, it was more than just a cheap redress of typical Western-style superhero fiction. Unfortunately, it also fell into a trap seen in superhero comics of the 1990s, mistaking confusion and faux complexity for depth. This is the main reason why it's still so divisive, and thus rather forgotten.

Anime characters come in all different shapes, sizes, colors, and even genders. In these fabricated worlds, artists and writers take the chance to explore identities outside the gender binary in a multitude of ways. While some titles breach the topic in more respectful ways than others, it's hard to deny that nonbinary characters have always existed in the medium.

When looking at genderqueer and LGBTQ+ representation in anime, the selection is vast. Nonbinary simply denotes any gender identity expressed outside of male and female, which means that nonbinary encompasses identities such as agender, genderfluid, transgender, third gender, or androgynous, to name a few. Sometimes, a character's gender identity is core to their story arc, while for others, it's simply another detail.

Betrayal is a fact of life for anime protagonists. Sooner or later, someone they run into is going to betray them. Sometimes the upcoming betrayal is obvious, if only to the audience, but not always. The best betrayals, of course, are the ones that fans don't see coming, where the viewer is hurt as badly by the betrayal as the characters are. Here are 10 of the most brutal betrayals in anime--some from characters you might suspect, but others that seemingly came out of nowhere.

“Ozark” fans, rejoice. The Jason Bateman and Julia Garner-starring drama series is returning to Netflix in April with a second part to its fourth season — and it’s just one of many other hotly anticipated titles coming to the streamer this month.
April will also see the long-awaited sophomore installment to “Russian Doll,” the mind-bending “Groundhog Day”-esque dramedy series starring Natasha Lyonne as a hard-partying New York City woman stuck in a brain-melting circuitous loop from hell.
For fans of capital-m mess, there’s the Spanish-language “Elite,” which traces the scandalous (and often murderous) exploits of the posh attendees of high school Las Encinas. Or, if you prefer your glamorous mess via reality series, “Selling Sunset” — about the lux real estate market in Los Angeles — is premiering its fifth season April 22.

A list of new streaming releases on Netflix, what a concept!
Netflix’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by the return of one of the great sci-fi comedies ever. Natasha Lyonne is set to return as the temporally displaced Nadia on Russian Doll season 2 on April 20. The first season of the show premiered in 2019 and appeared to tell a rather complete story about one Brooklyn woman’s experiences of dying over and over again. But Lyonne and fellow producers Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler still have some story to tell. Netflix is undoubtedly very happy to let them continue to tell it.

In 2015, All Nippon Entertainment Works, a company that connects Japanese intellectual property owners to Hollywood producers, announced the production of a live-action adaptation of the anime series “Tiger & Bunny.” That film was never made although it was announced May 8 that Global Road, Bandai Namco Pictures, Imagine Entertainment and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road Pictures are partnering to make a live-action movie of the property. But despite that fact, none of the half-dozen films under Anew were completed prior to its sale last year at a tremendous loss.
Anew was once was a key component in the trade ministry’s Cool Japan initiative, which aims to promote the nation’s creative and cultural products and services around the world.
However, the loss raises questions about its management.
“Anew is like institutional corruption,” says film producer Hiro Masuda, who has done significant research into Anew and its former owner, the Innovation Network Corp.
