Exclusive: The Riverdale star is attached to star and will produce under her Small Victory’s first look deal at Amazon MGM Studios, Fake Wedding.

The project, based on Ali and Anthony Garland’s short story, is currently being developed with the twosome penning the screenplay. Fake Wedding follows two broke singles who throw a fake wedding to cash in on the registry and the very real problems the make-believe couple encounters. Scott Glassgold’s 12:01 Films assembled the project and is producing. Verve held the auction and sold the project in the low six figures.

Amazon MGM Studios is becoming quite the house of rom-coms. Recently their Reese Witherspoon-Will Ferrell movie You’re Cordially Invited amassed 827M viewing minutes within its first few days of availability on Prime, putting it at No. 6 on Nielsen’s overall Top 10. Netflix’s hit series The Night Agent remains at the top of the Nielsen streaming charts for the second week in a row. The show had 2.92 billion minutes of viewing from January 27 to February 2, 2025. This is only a small drop of 6% from its debut week.

Apple TV+’s Severance is also doing well. The series ranked fourth among original streaming shows with 557 million minutes of viewing. While this is slightly lower than its first two weeks (589 million and 622 million minutes), Severance is now Apple TV+’s most-watched show since Ted Lasso in 2023.

Another Netflix spy drama, The Recruit, had a strong week too. Its second season premiere brought in 1.19 billion minutes of viewing, up from 925 million for its first season debut in 2022.

Netflix’s documentary series American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson had 723 million minutes of viewing. Hulu’s drama Paradise also made the top 10 with 550 million minutes.

Reese Witherspoon’s style can be boring at times; she usually wears black midi dresses or pencil skirts, as if she has nothing else in her closet. But while she always exudes elegance in her black outfits, I still want to see more from her.

Luckily, she went all out for the press tour of her latest movie, You’re Cordially Invited. Reese looked fierce in a red suit for her appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show and oozed power in a blue suit on Good Morning America. At the New York screening of the film, she embraced her love of black, but I like that she chose a stylish peplum outfit rather than her typical corporate wear.

And if Reese Witherspoon’s press tour outfits are any indication, I would love to get a ticket to the movie.

Audiences surprisingly RSVP’d to watch Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon’s lackluster new comedy You’re Cordially Invited, which debuted Thursday, Jan. 30, on Prime Video. In fact, director Nicholas Stoller’s critically maligned film currently (Feb. 1) ranks No. 1 on the streaming service's Top 10 Overall and Top 10 Movies charts (per FlixPatrol).

Unfortunately, Ferrell and Witherspoon’s small-screen teaming tanked with the majority of critics. Frank Scheck writes in The Hollywood Reporter’s review: "A relentlessly vulgar and witless affair that not even the talents of stars Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon and a comedically gifted supporting cast can rescue." Peter Debruge of Variety says:

"The Prime [Video] release should play great at any scale while its stars are crossed at one another, but miscalculates their chemistry in a gratuitous and slightly icky epilogue."

A.A. Dowd took things a step further in IGN’s review (5/10 stars) by saying:

The end of January comes to a bit of a crawl for new titles in theaters, VOD, and streaming. Yet, that does not mean that there are not a few hidden gems worth tracking down. Two phenomenal features are getting a theatrical release over the weekend, including the sci-fi thriller Companion and the post-apocalypse romance Love Me. Meanwhile, Prime brings an original comedy to their streaming platform with the Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell-led You're Cordially Invited.

Weddings are such fertile ground for star-driven comedies it seems impossible to reinvent the sub-genre. The Holidays are always a special time to watch Christmas movies and TV specials to help get in the spirit. One of the more beloved films was Elf, the 2003 Will Ferrell-led holiday comedy directed by Jon Favreau and co-starring a who's who of supporting actors. And just a few weeks ago, in what could have been a touching Christmas gift to fans, ended up being a hilarious viral moment at an LA Kings hockey game: Ferrell dressed as Buddy the Elf, but looking disheveled and "smoking" a (candy) cigarette while drinking a beer.

While quite surprising and funny, there were questions about why Ferrell returned as Buddy, but not in a long-hoped-for sequel. Was the star promoting something? Sadly, that is usually the case when an actress or actor reprises a beloved character.

How funny is 2025 going to be?

Last year wasn’t great for comedies, with movies like The Fall Guy and If failing at the box office. Could 2025 be a rebound? It’s possible, which inspired me to put together a list of the 10 comedies I’m most intrigued to see this year. Some are much-awaited sequels to beloved movies. Others are daring swings by acclaimed indie directors. And one of them features Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd at odds. Clearly, there’s something for everyone in 2025.

I organized my picks by release date, putting movies that don’t yet have a fixed spot on the calendar at the end in alphabetical order. But, as always, it’s a roll of the dice when you’re putting together a guide like this. I haven’t seen any of these movies, so I’m really just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.
