Shortcut Romeo

Movie Review | Gadar 2 | Action packed nostalgia
Image
Gadar 2 is a period-action-drama directed by Anil Sharma. A sequel to the 2001 film Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. With Gadar 2, the Katha (story) continues and picks up from where it left. Tara Singh (Sunny Deol), Sakeena, Tara Singh’s wife (Ameesha Patel) and Charan Jeet Singh aka Jeete, Tara and Sakeena’s son (Utkarsh Sharma), the three key characters and actors reprise their roles from the first part.

What also continues is the nostalgic song and dance sequences from the first part recreated and revisited to retain the texture and feel of the film. To be fair to the new generation, if you have seen this Gadar 2, then you have very well missed almost nothing if you hadn’t seen Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. As for all those from the Gadar generation, enjoy the nostalgia and reminisce shots and sequences from the 2001 blockbuster.

The Gadar katha (story) continues...

Don't make mistake of writing me off: Neil Nitin Mukesh
Neil Nitin Mukesh
Mumbai, Jan 25: Year 2013 wasn't the best for Neil Nitin Mukesh. Three of his films - "David", "3G" and "Shortcut Romeo" led to many thinking that he has exhausted his career opportunities, but the handsome actor says he's just six years old in the industry and he shouldn't be written off just like that.

"Please don't make the mistake of writing me off," said the well-spoken Neil, who turned 32 on Jan 15.

The fact that his three back-to-back films bombed at the box office in a year full of big screen gems triggered speculation on his box office status and future in cinema.

But he laughs off speculation about.

Neil Nitin Mukesh: I yearn for respect
Neil Nitin Mukesh was seen in a 'masala' role for the first time ever in Shortcut Romeo. While he did enjoy singing, dancing and indulging in some cool action for the dramatic thriller (and did quite well too), the results have been far from satisfactory as far as commercial success is concerned. Though he has managed to leave behind the dark roles that he has played in abundance, the film has suffered due to an ill-planned release. However, the silver lining has been some all-...

Box Office: ‘Raanjhanaa’ sees good response, ‘Shortcut Romeo’ and ‘Enemmy’ don’t get a chance
Last week’s prediction pretty much came true as between the three releases, it was ‘Raanjhanaa’ that came trumps. It was said in this column that the film’s opening won’t really hit the roof but would see gradual rise of the content turns out to be a winner. This was indeed the case as this Aanand L Rai directed film opened on a 25%-30% note, only to reach 70%-80% mark at an average by the time evening shows ensured. There was further progress over the weekend as the word of mouth ranged from above average to good to very good, hence resulting in a satisfying weekend.

Critical response to the film was generally good as well and further credibility came from the fact that the lead pair saw all around appreciation coming its way. Dhanush saw good brownie points coming his way for his first ever Bollywood outing...

Neil endorses Sonams film along with his own
Neil Nitin Mukesh
Though Neil Nitin Mukesh had a crucial release this week, he's pitching in hard for Sonam Kapoor who has a crucial release this Friday. Neil and Sonam have been close friends from the time they worked together in Abbas-Mustan's pricey fiasco Players. Ever since then, the two have kept close tabs on each other's projects and make sure they watch one another's films. There's a healthy give-and-take of criticism from both ends. Neil feels this Friday brings a new beginning for both of them. "Sonam in Raanjhanaa is completely transformed. I can see the change in her. I feel it would be like a new beginning for her. It's like what happened to Karisma Kapoor after Raja Hindustani or Shabana Azmi in Arth." Neil himself feels a similar change as an actor as he watches himself in Shortcut Romeo. "Believe me; I've never worked so hard. Because the director...

Neil and Sonam developed a good friendship ever since they worked together in Abbas-Mustan's "Players". They have.

Ameesha slams Subhash Ghai
Ameesha Patel
Of late Ameesha Patel has been displaying an exceptionally aggressive and defensive stance in her press interviews. But what happened during a radio interview on Tuesday to promote her new film Shortcut Romeo left her co-star Neil Nitin Mukesh stumped and also caused considerable offense to Subhash Ghai. During the course of the chat on radio, Ameesha spoke about how she was ousted from Subhash Ghai's 2001 film Yaadein featuring Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor, due to filmy politics. Amisha didn't stop there. She went on to express relief and happiness at her alleged ouster, considering how the film finally turned out. The remark immediately triggered off a chain of offended sensibilities. Says a member of the team that accompanied the actors, "When Ameesha said this, we were all shocked. Neil didn't know where to look. His whole face went red. Actors as a rule don't talk about the roles that they don't do,...

‘Raanjhanaa’ to lead at multiplexes, ‘Shortcut Romeo’, ‘Enemmy’ for single screens
As many as three films release this weekend – Raanjhanaa, Shortcut Romeo and Enemmy. Out of these, Raanjhanaa has been the most heavily promoted while Shortcut Romeo and Enemmy have seen some decent visibility around them. Though this is leading to a crowded box office, Raanjhanaa is all set to get the best shows at the multiplexes due to backing of a strong production house (Eros). Moreover, director Aanand L Rai has a hit (Tanu Weds Manu) behind him which helps the film’s cause as well. The Dhanush-Sonam Kapoor starrer will enjoy the biggest release amongst the three films and also a better opening. For a good number to be calculated though, a lot would depend on the word of mouth as this one is a family entertainer and hence a growth over the weekend is possible once the word spreads about it. On the other hand Shortcut Romeo...

Ameesha Patel, Puja Gupta, and Neil Nitin Mukesh in Shortcut Romeo (2013)
Shortcut Romeo Review
Ameesha Patel, Puja Gupta, and Neil Nitin Mukesh in Shortcut Romeo (2013)
Film: "Shortcut Romeo"; Cast: Neil Nitin Mukesh, Ameesha Patel and Puja Gupta; Director: Susi Ganesh; Rating; *** - cooly crafted cat-and-mouse game.

There are two ways of doing a full-on masala film. You either turn it on its head and poke fun at ridiculous cinematic conventions. Or you treat the stereotypical characters and sacred cows of our cinema with full seriousness.

"Shortcut Romeo" takes the midway route. It seems so full of the old-world formulistic flavour and the stench of the familiar that parts of the pulsating aggressive storytelling actually feel like a spoof.

So, we have the film's unfaithful wife.

Shortcut Romeo’s Real Life Connection
The phenomenon is all too real. Rich wives pick up toy boys to rid themselves of loneliness, caused by absentee workaholic husbands. More often than not, they fall prey to young men who either blackmail them into parting with their money or into leaving their husbands. In Shortcut Romeo, director Susi Ganesh tells us one such story.

After reading about such cases, Susi Ganesh felt that for the country’s youth, materialistic achievement is the ultimate dream.

Pursuing that dream is his film’s hero, played by Neil Nitin Mukesh, who is shown blackmailing a lonely, rich wife played by Ameesha Patel. He doesn’t demand a lump sum amount, but rather wants her to support his rich lifestyle for a lifetime. Puja Gupta plays his ‘real’ girlfriend.

Says he, “Even our epics, like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, convey a strong message to those eyeing another’s wife and wealth.

Shortcut Romeo Music Review
Coming up on June 21st is Shortcut Romeo directed by Susi Ganesh and starring Neil Nitin Mukesh, Ameesha Patel and Puja Gupta. To create the music of the romantic thriller, the director brought in Himesh Reshammiya. The music director created a cool set of songs with lots of new flavored notes, beats and vocals to back up the movie and from what we have seen so far the rapid, running pace of the film. See the breakdown of what we thought of the sounds of the world of Shortcut Romeo.

Pe Pe Pe starts off the album and it was so not what I was expecting. Very 60s feel and sound, the song is a perfect character theme song, much like they did back then. Himesh Reshammiya sounds fabulous and is having fun on the peppy and at the same time cool track. My only complaint is the electronic drum kit beats,...

Neil makes sketches before changing his look
When director Susi Ganesh wanted Neil to play the lead in his film Shortcut Romeo his first instruction to the actor was that he wanted him to sport long hair in the film. Neil being a fine artist made sketches of his look with the long hair for the director’s approval and then zeroed in on the final look for the film.

Director Susi Ganesh says “I wanted him to have long hair for the role so we asked him to wear a wig. He loved the look but said that instead of a wig he would grow his hair naturally long. He took all the trouble to grow his mane and he looked very different. We loved the look with the long hair and decided to go in with the look for the character.”
